To Our 40th Anniversary. How quickly it seems time has passed. As we look back, we realise how beautiful, unspoilt and outstanding Pembrokeshire remains. Celebrating 40 years of business, we are delighted to share the latest edition of our Coastal Life magazine with you. We open with Carreg Samson, a former sail loft on the shore at Abercastle where the entire journey began. Carreg Samson was our original office which has now come full circle; having been beautifully restored, it sits proudly as one of our most popular and sought-after holiday properties. It encompasses all that is great about a cottage holiday in Pembrokeshire. To celebrate 40 years we have, as a team who all live right here in Pembrokeshire, put together a bucket list of the top 40 things to do in Pembrokeshire. For inspiration, we have highlighted some of the activities on offer and as our regular visitors will testify, illustrated why Pembrokeshire is truly a foodie heaven! Without a doubt, Pembrokeshire is something of ’The Play Park of Wales’, home to an abundance of land and sea-based activities unmatched elsewhere. We cover some unique stays, offering luxury and one-of-a-kind experiences. We hope it will give you a flavour of what is on offer, should you be planning something a little special for 2022. We hope you find inspiration for your future travels and enjoy some of the marvellous photography of Pembrokeshire’s breathtaking scenery throughout the magazine. We all look forward to welcoming you to Pembrokeshire very soon.

Abercastle, where it all began.
It’s been forty amazing years. n 2022, we’re celebrating our fortieth birthday at Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire and to be honest, we can’t quite believe where the last four decades have gone. Are we really that old?!
I
in Abercastle - the place where it all began. We also know that some of you reading this may be acquainting yourselves with us for the first time and we welcome you all just as warmly.
With this issue, we raise a glass to the forty years which have passed and look forward to the forty years yet to come. Just as anyone celebrating a significant birthday does, we’ve become somewhat sentimental so you’ll find a sprinkling of nostalgic photos and long-lost memories throughout these pages.
Over the years, we’ve seen many a change such as the rise of the internet and we’ve adapted to suit, but the important heart of our company has not changed. Here at Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire, we always have and always will be a family run team who all live and breathe our spectacular corner of Wales.
Some of you reading this may have lived through a few of these forty years with us, returning year upon year for your family holidays. We know for certain that some of you have been with us since the early days; when it was just a handful of us working out of the small office
Back in 1982, we began as a passion project established by Daphne and Paul Pocock; a husband and wife pair with a deep-rooted adoration for Pembrokeshire and a determination to share that with others. Nowadays that passion, adoration and determination remain, just with

a different pairing at the helm. In our very first brochure, we wrote that “the service [we provide] is a personal one”; a mantra that we have held as our top priority ever since. We understand the significance a holiday has and so we do our utmost to ensure you find the very best cottage for you. We’ve set up our very own Concierge service to help make sure the rest of your holiday experience matches that just-right cottage with personalised recommendations and bespoke suggestions on what to see and do during your stay.

These funds are from our guests to the community, to essentially leave Pembrokeshire better than they found it. For every booking, we ask for a voluntary £2 donation to help fund a multitude of projects throughout the county. This year we will also be launching our “Project 40” – where we will be donating £500 to 40 projects in Pembrokeshire to celebrate our 40 years in business.

CARREG SAMSON Abercastle Sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms
T
echnically it all began across the road at Sea View, though most of us better remember the days at Carreg Samson, as there were only ever less than six staff at Sea View - including Daphne and Paul Pocock who first started the company. Back in the early days, before we moved our headquarters to Haverfordwest, Carreg Samson in Abercastle was our home. Between 1986 and 1995, this prominent building set aside the sand shingle beach at Abercastle was the sole hub of Coastal Cottages. We hold many a fond memory of our time here and in the years to come, we’re sure you will do too. For some time, Carreg Samson has been a highly soughtafter holiday home and it’s no wonder. Set only ten paces from the beach, it is a must book for anyone planning the ultimate beachside escape. In recent months, this seaside stone cottage has undergone a remarkable transformation inside and now promises an even more spectacular stay for all who visit in the future. The characterful charm remains, with retained features such as exposed stone and restored ceiling beams. Step in the entrance where you’ll be
greeted with quality slate flooring underfoot and you’ll find yourself in a newly converted upside-down house. The ground floor is made up of four bedrooms, the furthermost seaward boasts a charming sea view, plus a family bathroom. It’s hard to believe that this very space was once bustling with activity from our reservations department. The real highlight of Carreg Samson’s new layout comes when you follow the open tread staircase to the first floor. As you approach the top of the stairs, you’ll immediately notice the large arched window dominating the far wall, providing awe-inspiring views across the entire bay and the rugged coastline which frames the shore. Stand here and watch families paddling in the waves below,
walkers lacing up ready for a day on the Coast Path and adventurous souls making their way along the cliffs for a guided coasteering exercise. The raised stance from this first-floor window allows you to bask in enviable breathtaking scenes and soak up the glorious vista like nowhere else. With the added feature of a Juliette balcony, this really is a magnificent spot to enjoy the Pembrokeshire coast. Centred around the glazed wall is an open-plan living space complete with comfortable sofas and a modern fitted kitchen, a delightful area for evenings in with the whole family. Cook up a delicious feast, circle around a board game with snacks or chatter late into the evening as you gaze at the hypnotic water below. Neutral colours with blue hues decorate Carreg Samson throughout, reflecting the nautical location of the property. When you’re not enjoying the views from inside, you’ll no doubt spend much of your time on the beach. Leisurely sea swims are a delight here, though keen anglers will not want to forget their bait and rods when visiting, you can frequently catch bass and wrasse in these waters. Join the Coast Path directly from outside the cottage and explore Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon and the hidden beach at Traeth Llyfn, or hike to Porthgain for lunch at The Sloop Inn. St Davids lies just a few miles west and is the UK’s smallest city. It’s a bustling settlement known for activities, shopping, culture and history. Sightsee the Cathedral, tour the Bug Farm, sign up for surfing and shop for unique souvenirs. Full Property Details

T H E C O A S TA L L I F E
To celebrate our fortieth birthday, we’ve put together the ultimate Pembrokeshire Bucket List with forty amazing things to do on our coast. 14
Perfect for kids Pembrokeshire is a child’s wonderland with plenty of adventures to be had and memories to be made, make sure to tick these off your to-do list!
1
Go rock pooling
What better way to spend a summer morning than barefoot, paddling in the shores on the search for weird and wonderful sea creatures in Pembrokeshire’s rock pools? Wisemans Bridge beach and the south side at Abereiddy are top spots for rock pooling; try to find crabs, starfish and periwinkles lurking in these shallow wades of water. Just be careful not to disturb or hurt this wildlife, or be caught out by the tide.
2
Build a sandcastle
Make sure to pack your bucket and spade for a day on the sand - but who will build the best one? Favourite spots with soft sand ideal for building epic sandcastles include Newgale, Saundersfoot and Tenby Harbour Beach. All have beachside shops too where you can pick up a new bucket and spade if you forget yours. Make it a competition or partner up to make the best sandcastle ever seen.
3 4
Try coasteering
5
Go crabbing
Are you brave enough to go coasteering? If you’re unsure exactly what coasteering entails, it’s a watersports activity which combines cliff scrambling, leaping and sea swimming to create an exhilarating experience for all! Pembrokeshire is known to be the birthplace of this challenging sport and with an incredible Welsh coastline, there really is no better place to give it a go. Head to Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon and have a go with one of the operators in the area.
Take a boat trip
Deciding to book a boat trip is a no-brainer as it’s the only way to explore some of Pembrokeshire’s most fascinating places. Take a tour around Skomer Island for puffin sightings or head to Grassholm an island covered in gannets. The RSPB island of Ramsey is great for seabirds and Atlantic seals whilst Cardigan Bay is where to go for dolphins. Ask our Concierge team to help you decide which is best for you.
For an affordable holiday activity, crabbing comes high on the list. Head to Dale pontoon with a bucket and net in hand, and you’re set for the day! To crabbing newcomers it might sound strange, but bacon is the preferred choice of bait around here. Wait and see what crabs you can tempt out of their hiding places, but please make sure to set them free again once you’ve identified what type of crab you’ve caught. Will it be a hermit, shore or velvet crab?
15
6
Visit a castle
Delve into Pembrokeshire’s rich history at one of Pembrokeshire’s magnificent castles. There are 6 main castles in Pembrokeshire - Carew, Llawhaden, Manorbier, Pembroke, Narberth and Haverfordwest. Each one offers something completely different and all of them promise a brilliant day out. Take a guided tour around Pembroke Castle and learn about the birthplace of Henry VII or wander around the beautiful grounds of Carew Castle, making sure to stop for a picture at the only restored tidal mill in Wales. Keep an eye out for exciting events too such as Christmas markets and outdoor theatre in the summer.
7
Fly a kite
9
Meet the puffins on Skomer
A rite of passage for any child, flying a kite is best done by the coast with the help of the sea breeze. Larger beaches are ideal for this activity as you’ll have plenty of space to follow the kite wherever the wind takes it. Try Whitesands, Newgale or Tenby South Beach.
8
Visit a zoo
Who doesn’t love a day out at the zoo? Lions, penguins, giraffes, rhinos and monkeys - Folly Farm has it all! Including farm favourites like chickens, pigs and goats; this adventure park is an all-around great day out for the whole family with an indoor funfair, outdoor play areas and more. A brand new Sloth Forest opened up in 2021 adding yet another great animal attraction to the park.
A boat trip to Skomer Island will land you in puffin paradise. One of Pembrokeshire’s most popular seabirds, these charming animals are easily recognisable with their boldly coloured bills. Each year almost 6000 of them return to the island, making Skomer the biggest colony of puffins in Southern Britain.
10
Selfie in Tenby
Quite possibly the most photographed location in Pembrokeshire, Tenby Harbour is one of the county’s most wellknown landmarks. No matter the season, the weather conditions or the time of day, Tenby Harbour is a must visit. See the boats moored in the harbour, enjoy a cuppa from the café in the wall, play in the sands at Harbour beach and spot Roald Dahl’s favourite holiday home (The Cabin, see pg 60).

Great to take the dog along The bucket list continues with some of our favourites, not just for you but for your pets too.
11
Climb to the top of Carn Llidi
Choose a bright summer’s morn or an autumnal evening for a scenic hike to the top of Carn Llidi and you’re guaranteed to be greeted with magnificent views. Make sure it’s a clear day and you’ll not only see the sandy beach of Whitesands below, but you’ll also see the neighbouring RSPB island of Ramsey out to sea. Make sure to bring a camera, this is one viewpoint you’ll want to take home with you. We love to take along a picnic and waste away the hours at the summit, but if you have an energetic pup you want to tire out, extend your hike by following the Coastal Path to explore the headland further.
12
Hike in the Preseli Hills
Don your walking boots and backpack for a day out in the Welsh countryside and head to the Preseli Hills, where views across the rolling greenery are a-plenty. Steeped in history, these hills hold secrets of the Iron and Bronze ages with hints of ancient burial sites, standing stones and much more.
13
Visit Pentre Ifan
Made with the very same Preseli bluestones as Stonehenge they say, Pentre Ifan is a distinctive Neolithic burial chamber located in the hillside just outside of Newport. Strikingly set against the backdrop of the rural countryside, this is a top spot for a doggy selfie - instruct your canine to sit right under the capstone and snap your memento.
14
St Govan's Chapel
Positioned right on the edge of the coast, this tiny chapel is something to be marvelled at. Follow the steep steps down the cliff to reach this remarkable landmark and you’ll be astonished at the extraordinary building here. Take a photo with your pooch on the rocks between the chapel and the sea, this is one for the memory box.
15
Visit Strumble Head
Whilst you cannot access the lighthouse, taking in the spectacular scenery of the lighthouse and its surroundings is definitely recommended. Bring along some snacks to make the most of your visit or call into one of the cafes at Goodwick before heading onto the beach.
16
Walkies at the Lily Ponds
The circular walk at Bosherston is a favourite amongst our furry friends and it’s no wonder why. Part of the larger Stackpole estate, the trail around these man-made lakes is fairly even and suitable for most abilities and prams, making it a popular destination for all. May/June is the best time to visit as the water lilies are in full bloom though you will find this area teeming with wildlife twelve months of the year. You’ll see swans, otters, butterflies, herons and kingfishers in this picturesque setting. Halfway round you’ll reach Broadhaven South - beach dogs will go wild for the soft sand and ebbing waves here. Tuck into a picnic, swim in the sea then bask in the rays under the warm sun. Continue east around the headland to sightsee one of Pembrokeshire’s worst-kept secrets, Barafundle Bay - often referred to as one of the best beaches in the world.
23
17
Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
An astounding 186 miles in length, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is by far one of the best dog friendly attractions in the region. Walk any stretch and it won’t be long before you reach a beautiful beach, a quaint cove or a great place to eat. You’ll stumble across plenty of places to play, rest and enjoy the views. Traeth Llyfn, Swanlake and Barafundle are beaches only accessible via the Path and to miss out on such locations would be a real shame. Plus, if you’re travelling with a small dog or a pup who gets tired easily, fret not. Hop on the coastal shuttle bus to take you back to your starting point. Parts of the path take you through farmland and protected areas so it’s best to keep your canine on a lead and don’t forget to take poop bags and a travel water bottle.
24
The spectacular Elegug Stacks on one of the southern sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

18
Spend a day at Caldey Island
The journey to Caldey Island is a must when holidaying in Tenby as it’s guaranteed to be a great day out for all - families, children, friends and dogs. Take a short boat ride from Tenby Harbour over to the monkinhabited island during the summer months and it’ll be like a holiday from your holiday! You and your hound can play on the soft sand at Priory Beach for hours before wandering up to the lighthouse for impressive views over the South Pembrokeshire coastline and Carmarthen Bay. Call into the cafe for lunch or pack some sarnies and cake to enjoy an alfresco meal in any one of the scenic spots across the island. Pick up some perfume and homemade chocolates, both made on the island by the monks or purchase a postcard to send to your loved ones back home. Dogs are welcomed but should be kept on leads at all times. www.caldeyislandwales.com
19
Play catch on Newgale Beach
Newgale Beach in the west is one of the longest bays in Pembrokeshire with much of the sand here remaining dog friendly all year round. Keep to the left towards the Pebbles Cafe and you’ll be in the right place amongst other friendly dog families. The vast expanse of space means there’s many a game of catch to be had here with your best friend. Bring along a football, a Frisbee and a tennis set - your pooch will have a field day! As well as playing catch, there is a multitude of fun pastimes to be enjoyed here. Build sandcastles with the little ones whilst your dogs get sandy paws digging or go for a quick sea swim, water-loving dogs will delight in the lengthy shoreline.
20
Go for a doggy paddle
Time and time again we hear heartwarming stories from guests about their dog’s very first time seeing the beach, what a special moment! Some pups take a few visits to warm up to the notion of a moving tide whilst others can’t wait to jump in and get their feet wet! Beaches such as Abercastle, West Angle and Wisemans Bridge are top choices for a doggy paddle - the latter even has an excellent dog friendly pub you might like to visit too (www.wisemansbridgeinn.co.uk).

FAVOURITE BEACHES We did a quick poll in the office to try and find our top 10 beaches. Safe to say, most of Pembrokeshire’s beaches were put forward as being some of the best bays – they are all pretty special after all. After much deliberation, below are our top 10 beaches in Pembrokeshire.
TENBY SOUTH BEACH We limited ourselves to choosing just one of Tenby’s four fantastic beaches, simply because there are so many across the county which deserve championing. It was difficult to narrow them down to just one but eventually, we got there. Tenby South Beach topped our list of the four for a couple of reasons. Whilst all of Tenby’s beaches are within walking distance to the town centre, South Beach is the largest. It is roughly 2 miles in length, backed by dunes and offers views across Caldey Island and beyond. It’s the only one of the beaches in the town which is dog friendly, plus it’s perfect for bodyboarding, kayaking and surfing.
WHITESANDS Set on the outskirts of St Davids, Whitesands Beach is one of the top destinations for watersports. Western-facing, this shoreline benefits from the incoming tides off the Irish sea which often results in fantastic conditions for surfing and kitesurfing. Whether the sun is shining or not, you’ll often find wetsuit-donning bodies surfing the waves on their boards throughout the year. But there is so much more to this Pembrokeshire beach than just watersports. As suggested by the name, the sands here are beautifully white making them ideal for family days out at the beach building sandcastles. Make sure to walk to the summit of Carn Llidi, the towering outcrop overlooking the bay, for incredible coastal views, and venture into the city to visit St Davids Cathedral.
NEWGALE Newgale Beach is one of the largest and most memorable bays in Pembrokeshire and probably in Wales. It is some two miles in length and is backed by a unique large pebble bank that stops the incoming tide from overflowing onto the main road which runs through Newgale. Travel through the village at high tide and you’ll be fooled into thinking that there are no sands here at all, as the water levels comes some way up the pebble bank. But come low tide, a wide expanse of golden sands is revealed with plenty of room for beachgoers. Surfers, rock poolers, kiteboarders, fishermen and those partial to a game of beach cricket flock here in their droves – it’s a superb spot for all types of shoreline activities.
MARLOES SANDS Easily one of Pembrokeshire’s most magnificent beaches, Marloes Sands is more secluded than many of the bays in the area resulting in fewer visitor numbers – something which only makes it more magical for those who do make the effort to visit. The landscape here is made up of golden sands and impressive craggy rock formations, creating private pockets of sand ideal for a spot of sunbathing. But don’t just take our word that Marloes beach is something special, it’s even attracted the attention of Hollywood with Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) filming epic battle scenes here.
NEWPORT SANDS In the depths of the north Pembrokeshire coastline, the quaint boutique town of Newport offers two beaches; Newport Parrog and Newport Sands. Newport Sands makes our list as it is a family favourite for many and is larger than the Parrog beach which lies more central within the town. The clean shoreline and convenient facilities at Newport Sands, complete with seasonal lifeguards, make this a top choice for swimmers, watersports enthusiasts and of course, the bucket and spade brigade. Challenge your friends to a game of beach volleyball, launch your kayak here or enjoy an evening stroll with the dog; whatever you choose, you’re sure not to be disappointed. This stretch of the coastline teems with wildlife too, so you’re likely to spot figures with binoculars and fishing rods along the water too.
53
BROADHAVEN SOUTH South Pembrokeshire is sprinkled with so many great beaches, two of which lie just around the headland from each other near Stackpole. Barafundle Bay is the one that frequents various “Top Beaches in the World” lists, so we’ve decided to include Broadhaven South Beach in this list to share the love a little. Broadhaven South is the easily accessible sister beach to Barafundle Bay, which can only be reached via the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Imposing from the turquoise waters here is the iconic Church Rock, and the pretty Bosherston Lily Ponds lie just behind the bay. Plan a summer picnic, challenge the dog to a game of Frisbee or take the little ones body boarding.
NOLTON HAVEN The idyllic sandy cove at Nolton Haven Beach is nestled in the western coastline between Newgale Beach and Broad Haven Beach. It may be small in size, but it attracts huge footfall so expect the sands here to be filled with families, young groups and sun-worshippers through the summer months - many of whom may be staying in the village of Nolton which backs this bay. Flanked by high cliff sides, the sandy shoreline becomes a sheltered sun trap on those warm days so don’t forget the sunscreen! Seasonal lifeguards watch over the waters where you’ll find bathers and canoeists setting off for adventures around the caves.
CWM YR EGLWYS One of the smaller shingle beaches in Pembrokeshire, this wonderful cove at Cwm Yr Eglwys is particularly popular with boaters and wildlife lovers. Launch your sailing boat, rowing boat or kayak here and paddle out for a picnic at sea, or bring along the snorkel to explore underwater where you’ll find starfish, sea anemones and even spider crabs in the right season. Fisherman dot the high sea wall here at high tide casting off for dogfish, plaice and pollack whilst keen ramblers head off on the circular walk around Dinas Island for sightings of rare seabirds and seals. The benches which back the bay are ideal spots for a peaceful moment early morning or late evening.
54
WEST ANGLE BAY This southern Pembrokeshire beach may often be overshadowed by the likes of others in the region, such as Saundersfoot Beach and Freshwater West Beach, but those who have visited West Angle Bay place it in their favourites of all time. A truly special location, the golden bay offers fabulous views over the village of Angle and out towards Dale and the Cleddau Estuary. Dog friendly all year round, this is a great spot for surfers, kayakers and families. The northern end is rockier than the rest of the bay and is known to draw in climbers and rock poolers.
TRAETH LLYFN We’ll forgive you if you’re currently scratching your head because you’re unfamiliar with this one – some of the staff here have yet to visit this spectacular Welsh beach! Hidden along the coast between Abereiddy and Porthgain, you have to walk along the coast path to reach Traeth Llyfn Beach and then down a steep flight of metal steps. Believe us though, it’s certainly worth it. The cove here is sandy and quaint, and the likelihood that you’ll have it virtually to yourself is high. Bring along a packed lunch and enjoy a relaxing few hours soaking in the sun’s rays, or carry with you a rugby ball for a game of touch rugby in the sand before the tide cuts you off completely.
THE BEACH GUIDE Our Pembrokeshire Beach Guide is the go-to resource for finding your favourite beaches in Pembrokeshire. With 186 miles of unspoiled coastline, it’s fair to say that we have plenty of worldclass beaches in Pembrokeshire to visit. Soft golden sand, the sound of seagulls and some soft whip ice cream. Sound like heaven? How about a deserted cove all to yourself (and maybe some seals) for the day? From small secluded coves to supersized sandy beaches, Pembrokeshire has a beach to suit everyone. THE POWER OF
For centuries now, the sea has had a significant impact on our county. It has not only shaped our land physically but it has influenced and sculpted our communities. Through the decades, it has formed and reformed our communities and changed the way we work, live and play here.
60
Lower Fishguard
H
undreds of years ago, Pembrokeshire played a momentous part in land defences from sea attacks when the coastal location made the area an easy target to advancing troops. Along the coast, you’ll find fortresses from days gone by and once-magnificent stone castles standing guard. Locals at Fishguard proved particularly noteworthy in the Last Invasion of Britain when they captured French troops and encouraged the signing of a peace treaty. When sea travel was the major mode of international transport in the 19th Century, Pembroke Port was home to the Royal Dockyard where sailing ships were built. Other harbours such as Tenby and Porthgain were bustling hives of activity due to import/export activity for the slate, brick, coal, and textile industries. Fishing villages dot the coastline across Pembrokeshire representing a fraction of the spirited lifestyle which once animated these now sleepy locations. Smaller harbours like Abercastle and Solva still have regular fishermen who trawl these waters and you can taste their catches in many a pub and restaurant along the shores. Nowadays, our sea has become more of a playground
than a work office with recreational activities being the preferred way to make the most of the coast. Many of the boat trips carried out are now sea safaris and coastal cruises, with operators sailing out of St Justinians, Dale and Tenby to reach the offshore islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Caldey respectively. The beaches are sprinkled with wetsuit-clad families trying surfing for the first time and learning to balance atop a paddleboard. You’ll find kayakers journeying through hidden caves and along calm stretches of saltwater whilst sea swimmers stroke through the shoreline enjoying calming moments. Soak up the views from any of the endless viewpoints on land for epic views. Channel your creativity through painting, photography or story-writing or enjoy family days by the seaside delving into the rockpools to see what the outgoing tide left behind.

ow do you feel about surf ’n’turf? If the answer is “particularly passionate”, you’re in for a real treat with one of Pembrokeshire’s newest restaurants.
Born out of the changing landscape created by the pandemic, a local fisherman and wife team from South Pembrokeshire have opened up a brand new restaurant, Rib & Oyster. It’s safe to say it has fast become one of the most popular eateries in the county, and for good reason too.
84
Rib & Oyster, Kilgetty
You’ll find Rib & Oyster in Kilgetty, only a few miles from Saundersfoot and Tenby but also within easy reach of places like Narbeth, Carew, Pembroke and Amroth. At the helm stands Gavin, a local fisherman with years of fishing experience out of Saundersfoot and his wife, Lucie. Together,
the two have established a wonderful intimate restaurant, fronted by one of the best butchers and fishmongers in the county. Quality produce matched with delectable ingredients make up the menu and if you needed any more convincing that the food really is top-notch, you might be interested to hear they supply one of the most famous chefs in the country. Mr Marco Pierre White gets the black pudding for all his restaurants here - so make sure to try it if you can!
Mr Marco Pierre White gets the black pudding for all his restaurants here - so make sure to try it if you can! Gavin, who spent many a year off the coast of Pembrokeshire on his trawler catching fresh seafood for the seaside restaurants of Saundersfoot and beyond, is now often seen donning his apron behind the counter. Some of our staff here at Coastal Cottages now visit so much that Gavin almost knows what we want before we do! Meat and seafood lovers should make a point to pop by and pick up some treats (scotch egg anyone?) for a fantastic feast is guaranteed when you buy from here. If you’re planning to dine in, be quick in reserving a table as the small restaurant can only cater for a few at a time - and you certainly don’t want to miss the chance to eat here.

DINING DIFFERENTLY
e’re big fans of dining out and so we should be, as there are some pretty epic places to eat in Pembrokeshire. That said, we do love to do things a little out of the ordinary. Holidays are all about those unforgettable experiences and that’s exactly what we hope to help you plan with the foodie extras available through our Concierge service. For those extra special mealtimes, ask about availability for Private Dining. To bring you this fantastic offering, we’ve teamed up with some local chefs who will become your very own personal chef for the evening. Or breakfast, or lunch - if that’s what you’d prefer. Think restaurant-style service in the comfort of your holiday cottage. Our chefs prepare a completely bespoke banquet using your cottage’s kitchen, lay the dinner table, serve your meals to you and then clean up everything afterwards. The ultimate exclusive event just for you and your family, perfect for celebrations and special occasions. We guarantee you’ll remember this night for a lifetime.
Sometimes though, staying in to be waited on might simply take up too much time in your busy schedule if you’ve planned a full itinerary or adventures and activities. We appreciate that. As we said, holidays are all about creating memories and you don’t always want to cut those moments short to meet a restaurant reservation. That’s where our Dine at Home and A La Carte menus come in handy. Also created by local chefs, these menus offer a range of oven-ready dishes perfect for those times when you want a speedy mealtime without compromising on quality food. For familiar favourites, our Dine at Home menu from The Georges offers delicious hearty meals whilst our A La Carte menu created by Ben Gobbi is a fine-dining menu perfect for indulgent evenings in. Graze tables are all the rage in recent years and thanks to The Cheesy Cow, we now cater for all your munching needs! If you’re gathering all your friends and family together in one of our larger holiday houses, a graze table is the best choice. Think an impressive spread of all your preferred tasty nibbles which will keep you going for hours. We even have graze boxes in case you don’t want the whole table or if you fancy a freshly-made picnic to take with you on your travels around Pembrokeshire. All of our foodie experiences are designed to be bespoke so whilst we have sample menus for each style to start you off, it’s best to give our team a call to chat through your ideas and requirements. That way, we’ll create the very best experience to suit you. Grazing tables from The Cheesy Cow can be arranged to be delivered direct to your cottage

( O R WA L K O R S W I M O R S U R F. . . ) Our national park is utterly unique with regards to it being the only coastal national park in the UK. This also means it’s the ultimate playground whatever your idea of fun. From word-class surf, world famous walking trails and superb cycling. Park and ride means something a bit different here.
F
or adventure travel, west is best as the saying goes. Ask us what activities you can take part in here in Pembrokeshire and it’s probably easier for us to say what you can’t do, because the list of what you can do is neverending. Land explorers can take to the coast path where you’ll find 186 miles of epic landscape. Ramblers will be in paradise as this continuous footpath hugs almost every inch of the craggy cliffs and weathered rockfaces which line the land. Invest in a decent pair of walking boots and you’re in good stead no matter which stretch you take. The more athletic amongst you may prefer an afternoon of trail running, there’s nowhere more scenic for a spot of exercise than Wales. Naturally, this is likely to be faster-paced than a leisurely hike so make sure to schedule regular stops to refuel and snap a memento - you’re sure to need both! Our resident “expert” here in the office claims Lydstep to Saundersfoot is the best trail
running route in the region, though it’s a tale of two halves. Start along beautiful beaches before moving into sheltered woodland right on the coast’s edge… talk about a challenge of terrains underfoot! For two-wheeled journeys, there are a-plenty in Pembrokeshire. Pedal along the Teifi river in the north, cycle part of the Celtic Trail West between St Davids and Abercastle or enjoy a traffic-free route on the Brunel Trail. Many like to bike the Saundersfoot Tramway alongside beaches through the old railway tunnels whilst those who prefer something a little more exhilarating should head for the newly re-developed Llys Y Fran Country Park where you can have a go at offroad mountain biking, along with a host of other activities.

Pembrokeshire is a mecca for watersports lovers, walkers and cyclists.
T H E U LT I M AT E PL AYG RO U N D There’s over 186 miles of jaw-dropping coastline to explore in Pembrokeshire and what’s more, every single mile of it is epic. From the more rugged north to the long sandy stretches of the south, it’s natural beauty makes the perfect setting for any activity.
Our coast is also the only coastal national park in the UK and through it, weaves the world-renowned, 186 mile long, Pembrokeshire Coast Path. If walking isn’t your thing and the water is then we have good news. 186+ miles of coastline equals a lot of world-class beaches.
Our Neil’s favourite secret spot, let us know if you find it...
Bordered by the sea on three sides, it’s no wonder that this coastal national park presents a wonderland of saltwater pursuits too. Pack your swimsuit and towel because you’re in for a wild ride when you plan an activity break in Pembrokeshire. Adrenaline-obsessed bodies head straight for Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon, the birthplace of coasteering, though various destinations across the coast offer it too. This activity merges cliff scrambling with wave leaping and sea swimming to create the ultimate in bold, brave sports. But believe us when we say, once you try it, you’ll be hooked. More traditional water-based hobbies to be enjoyed include surfing, kayaking/canoeing and wild swimming. Newgale and Whitesands are always popular for the wave-breakers with beginner boards whilst Freshwater West is where the pros love, it’s even where the annual Welsh National Surfing Championships have been held since the early 1970s. Those paddling through the water on kayak or canoe have the advantage of being able to reach locations otherwise inaccessible. Sightsee St Govan's Chapel from the sea (we’ll let in on a secret, it’s even better than from land!) or wade through to see the vivid green waters of The Witches Cauldron near Ceibwr Bay. Discover the
inland waterway of the Cleddau estuary which was once an industrial hotspot in days gone by when the communities here earned their money from fishing. Oar around the tranquil millpond surrounding Pembroke Castle thanks to kayak hire from Paddle West, a scenic treat on a summer’s day. Pool before breakfast? It’s a known fact that exercise is beneficial for the body, helping you keep on the right track and avoid health issues. Also, did you realise how great it is for your mind too? Swimming is a great workout for the entire body but helps to regulate your breathing, can help to lower your blood pressure and improves your sleep. Plus, it’s a great way for kids to burn off that excess energy - a win win! Wild swimming may have taken a recent resurgence but here in Pembrokeshire, we’ve been doing it for years. Always best to try it with an organised group first if you’re a newbie, just to make sure it’s safe - contact the Blue Tits or head to Wild Lakes Wales near Martletwy. A great secluded spot for swimming is Rosebush quarry, a Mediterranean-coloured pool enclosed by green hills. Manorbier
TOP PICKS
SURFING Be the epitome of cool with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face as you ride the waves on the best beaches in Wales.
CYCLING Opt for a greener mode of transport and head out on two wheels for a change, take in the sights and stop off for a pub lunch or a picnic. Bring your own or hire whilst you’re here.
Caerfai & the Coast Path
WALKING The world class Pembrokeshire Coast Path is a must, plus it is part of the Appalachian Trail and the Wales Coast Path. Breathtaking scenes, incredible beaches and a challenging route on par with Everest. Freshwater West during The Wales Sportive
DIVING Explore the depths of the underwater with a deep-sea dive in search of shipwrecks, octopus and rich seabed habitats. St Brides Bay is a popular haunt but you might actually find something haunting at the shipwreck out of Abercastle.
TRAIL RUNNING The elevation of the Coast Path amounts to a colossal 35,000 feet of ascent and descent so if you’re looking for a task to test those calves, a trail run fits the bill. Take into account you may want to stop and admire the views though.

One of the most popular activities we book for our guests is a scenic horse ride by the coast. aving specialised in quality holiday homes for forty years, we recognise when a cottage has that extra-special trait from the moment we walk inside. Sometimes, we don’t even need to walk inside. That’s exactly the case with the properties you’ll find overleaf. Each of these properties offers something outstanding from the minute you park up outside and believe us when we say, they guarantee the holiday of a lifetime. To describe these cottages as unique is spot on, in that they offer something no other property in our collection does. Think historic cottages with a fascinating past life to share, now cleverly converted into amazing holiday homes with characterful interiors and often flawlessly
restored original features. Ornamental pieces and minuscule details accent the heart of these properties with a welcoming atmosphere promised always. Some boast awe-inspiring sea views, some offer enviable beachside locations and some are set right on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, perfectly placed for coastline explorations and shoreline fun days. We even have one with no electricity if you’re in the mood for a tech-free holiday with a self-imposed screen ban. Being unique, it’s understandable then that these are some of our most popular cottages and thus, you’d best not dawdle if you want to secure a stay. Make your 2022 holiday exceptional and unforgettable with a getaway in one of our most distinct properties.

Best enjoyed in the summer months, each one has something different to offer. Skomer Island is often the most famous due to the presence of characterful puffins. Small in size but mighty in wildlife, this isle off the coast of the Dale peninsula welcomes visitors for landings from a departure point at Martins Haven. The RSPB island of Ramsey is a designated SSSI area where you’ll find endangered bird species like chough

At Grassholm, you’ll find a whitewashed island home to 10% of the world’s population of gannets. One of the RSPB’s oldest nature reserves sees some 39,000 pairs of breeding gannets a year. Caldey near Tenby is an important conservation area for pheasants, black swans, red squirrels and partridges. S
andwiched on the north coast between Newport and Dinas, only two miles from each, Aberfforest is one of the lesser-visited beaches in the county making it a perfect choice for anyone looking to venture off the beaten path and explore the wider Pembrokeshire coast. A total of six holiday cottages share the location at Aberfforest, sleeping up to 39 people in total, so that’s plenty of room for family holidays and group gettogethers. Of course, each cottage can also be booked individually if you don’t fancy getting away with 38 members of your family. Separately they accommodate between 2 and 12 people, so you’ll still be able to find something to suit your requirements whatever your party size. At Aberfforest, each property is practically just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge. Step out the front door of any of these houses and take a short walk, some 150 yards, to reach the shingle shoreline of Aberfforest Beach. The excellent location here offers a plethora of activities right on your doorstep, so it’s no wonder that many who stay here park up and drop the car keys at the door until they’re ready to depart a week later.
The beach is mostly shingle until low tide when a space of sand is revealed, so time for beach games and sandcastlebuilding is somewhat limited. That said, you can waste many an hour bathing in the cool waters on summer evenings and practising your stone skimming. Sit and bask in the peaceful location watching the ebb and flow, many who visit often boast undisturbed serenity as there are few passers-by.
At Aberfforest, each property is practically just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge with just a short walk to reach the shoreline. Boaters will want to bear this location in mind for their next holiday as you can launch from the slipway here, though a fee does apply. Sail out into Cardigan Bay for sightings of dolphins, porpoise and Atlantic grey seals. The extraordinary rugged coastline along this stretch of Wales provides a truly epic backdrop for all sea adventures. Locals say it is easily the best waterfall in the area, so make sure not to miss the opportunity to see it in all its glory. Follow the circular walk from the cottages through the woodland past the waterfall and along the stream to reach the beach again. Ramblers keen to spend the week hiking the Coastal Path in their walking boots will delight in a stay at Aberfforest as there is easy access to the famous trail from here. Amble west to tour Dinas Island, a utopia for birdlife including chough, ravens and guillemots. for refreshments with a scenic view. Venturing east will bring you out at Newport and the mouth of the River Nevern where you may find kingfishers, swans, otters and oystercatchers. The collection of properties at Aberfforest date back around 200 years, originally being a farmhouse and stone barns. Nowadays they are charming holiday cottages, each lovingly converted from their original states. The smallest of the group is Seal Cottage, sleeping just 2 in 1 bedroom. An idyllic stone cottage from the outside, this semi-detached holiday home makes a superb bolthole for couples with an open-plan living space decorated with slate floors, A-frame beams and an exposed stone feature wall.
The upstairs bedroom is set in the eaves of the galleried crog loft with skylights allowing you to sleep under the stars. Enjoy snug nights with your partner in front of the wood-burning stove or dine alfresco for breakfast in the sunny enclosed decked area to the rear.
Aberfforest House (13316)
Next door to Seal is Seahorse Cottage, another delightful stone cottage. Somewhat larger in size, Seahorse sleeps up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms and welcomes 1 pet, but manages to retain that same countryside charm its neighbour has. Once again, the open-plan living space here is given character with A-frame beams, patches of exposed stone and whitewashed walls. In the kitchen, you’ll find a “Shaker” style kitchen and in the bathroom, underfloor heating. The inviting lounge is centred around the wood burner, just down the hallway from two bedrooms with the third above, a galleried twin room. The enclosed garden is somewhat of a suntrap; enjoy a late morning cuppa whilst the dog stretches their legs before heading out for the day’s adventures. Across the yard lie two more semi-detached holiday cottages, Crab Cottage and Barnacle Cottage. Both are the same size as Seahorse and sleep up to 6 with 1 dog welcomed in each. Barnacle stands on the left, easily recognisable by its vibrant blue doors, whilst Crab Cottage stands on the right, with its contrasting red door. Barnacle Cottage consists of an open-plan living space
with vaulted ceilings and is decorated with whitewashed walls, neutral tones plus many of the original features seen in the other properties. Once the original cowshed, this coastal retreat now houses a cottage-style kitchen and 3 bedrooms, two of which are galleried on the first floor. An interesting feature is a P-shaped bath in the bathroom. To the front, there is a sheltered paved patio that catches the sun for much of the day. Make use of the barbecue provided for easy and delicious feasts on warm days; enjoy hearty burgers and homemade potato salad as the sun beams down on you. Aberfforest House (13316)

Plus, it has an enclosed raised patio allowing for plenty of memories to be made outside. Inside, it is the second largest of the collection sleeping up to 7 people in 4 bedrooms. Why not make plans to make your favourite holiday cottage your permanent home? Of course, we can’t guarantee everyone’s favourite holiday home will one day be up for sale, but can promise to help you find your own piece of Pembrokeshire. Just imagine your own little plot of Welsh land where you can lay your head 365 days a year, where your doggie can roam free from urban life and where you are surrounded by rolling green fields and beautiful blue seas. Specialising in unique and distinct properties throughout Pembrokeshire, you’re sure to find a real gem in Coasty’s portfolio.
You may discover a magnificent beachside property with panoramic sea views, a rural haven in the depths of the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, or an idyllic renovated farmhouse just moments from the Coast Path. t our heart, we are a local holiday cottage company who have been at the forefront of the self-catering industry for 40 years. Pioneering the quality end of the market, plus national and international marketing, Coastal Cottages has gained a reputation that has seen over 70% repeat business every year. Here at Coastal Cottages, our owners are an important part of the family and we’re always keen to extend that family – but we do only take on around 20% of the properties we are offered. First up, we want to stress that we’re not a call centre, nowhere near in fact. We are not in the business of processing visitors, we are quite the opposite. We’re a family-run company with a small team, all of whom live locally so we have a personal connection to the county around us and to what we do. We offer first-hand advice and guidance to guests. We’ve even established a Concierge team who work closely with local businesses to offer a holiday experience like no other. Our owners receive that same personalised advice and reliable service. Our Team schedule regular property visits throughout the year ensuring we get to know our cottages inside-out to give guests that extra level of service. As a future owner who wants to offer the very best, we’ll help you get there, even if that means casting our eye over interior design choices, helping choose the right facilities and giving our opinion when you’re looking for new properties to add to your collection.

We’ve learnt that no two properties are the same but luckily for us, no two guests are the same either. That’s why we endeavour to be flexible and personal throughout our service. And clearly, that ethos works. Many of our current collection has been with us since the days when we had only a handful of cottages and a small team back in the early 80s.
