GET READY FOR A
2022 It seems more important than ever to take some time to appreciate the natural world that surrounds us. In some places it’s easier to do that than others and Pembrokeshire certainly makes it easy. If you want to get closer to nature, come stay with it all on your doorstep.
P
embrokeshire is wild. Not Ibiza wild, the natural kind of wild. This is a place where vast sea bird colonies cling to the cliffs and sea battered islands of the wild west coast of Wales. Seals and porpoises can be seen playing in harbours and quiet coves. This is a place where in summer and spring, wildflowers of all colours, shapes and sizes seem to burst out of every hedgerow and along the Coast Path. The wildlife of Pembrokeshire is as much a part of its experience as the landscape and the people, to not seek it out is to not experience what Pembrokeshire is. Get up early and head to Martins Haven in the summer months to catch the boat over to Skomer Island and you’re in for a treat indeed. Home to a colony of adorable puffins that are happy to busy
22
themselves right beside you whilst rearing their chicks, the official (and adorable) name of which are pufflings. You can now pre-book your sailings to Skomer meaning no more first-come-firstserved queues. Now you can book as soon as you’ve booked your accommodation! Alternatively, you may want to head to Ramsey Island off the coast of the St Davids peninsula to see the inquisitive seals that call this ancient island home. This RSPB reserve is a special protection area for endangered choughs too, as well as peregrines, guillemots and wild ponies. Call our Concierge Team on 01437 772758 to book a selfguided tour of Ramsey, a leisurely cruise around the island or a jet boat thrill-ride through the seas and around the coves of this wildlife haven.
The majestic gannet that nests in vast colonies on the island of Grassholm in Pembrokeshire. There are so many birds on the island during nesting that it appears white from a combination of the birds and what they’ve eaten...
Bottlenose Dolphins in Cardigan Bay.
Trips to the offshore islands are always particularly popular and highly recommended, and it’s no wonder why with the wealth of wildlife you’ll find there. But there’s a world of nature waiting to be discovered a little inland too. Paddle a kayak along the Cleddau estuary, also known as Pembrokeshire’s hidden waterway, for sightings of wading river birds and wildfowl. Stroll the circular walk at Bosherston Lily Ponds where you might spot an otter or pay a visit to Plumstone Mountain (more like a hill) where you’ll find a roost of starling.
Although barely scratching the surface of the natural wonders that call our beautiful stretch of the Welsh coast home, you can begin to see why it’s so easy to go wild in Pembrokeshire. It’s time for a wild holiday Pembrokeshire style and each of our cottages have nature right on their doorstep, so what are you waiting for?
A Manx Shearwater taking off.
B
eing a coastal region, it is not unknown for Pembrokeshire to have some unexpected visitors from time to time. Birdwatchers are always keeping an eye out for rare sightings alongside the wellknown residents. This March, Pembrokeshire was taken by storm when a surprise character appeared from the Welsh waters and holidayed in the south of the county for a little while. We are, of course, referring to 2021's most famous celebrity now known as Wally the Walrus. More suited to the cooler climates of the Arctic Ocean and the North Pole, where approximately 20,000 reside, these substantially-sized mammals are very rarely sighted in this corner of the world.
Wally the walrus on the Tenby Lifeboat Station slipway
As expected, Tenby captured Wally’s heart and he extended his Wales holiday for a few days! He even let out his mischievous side by attempting to board a fishing boat and a dinghy, the latter of which unfortunately capsized under his weight! Wally has since toured the waters of Scilly and beyond. Most recently he has been spotted off the coast of Ireland, hopefully on his way home. We do wish him well on his journey and hope he knows he’s always welcome in Pembrokeshire. Make sure to always maintain a safe distance so as not to disturb wildlife in its natural habitat.

Upper Hoaten accommodates a total of 22 people across the five cottages plus 2 dogs per property - that’s 32 members of the family all together! Individually, they range in size sleeping between 2 and 6 people. The best thing about choosing somewhere like this, where the cottages all share the same location, is that the outside spaces simply become an extension of your holiday cottage. Unpack your belongings here for a week of quality time with those who mean the most to you and you’re sure to be left with lifelong memories. Rest assured as the little ones play together outdoors whilst the adult members of your party indulge in cups of tea
and glasses of wine. The delightful stone cottages are each fronted by individual gravelled patios complete with picnic tables, and benefit from additional shared facilities such as the trampoline and indoor games room with table tennis and pool table. The hub of the communal forecourt is often the Scandinavian wooden cabin where you’ll find a barbecue, ideal for alfresco family feasts.
When we say you can bring along all your loved ones, we really mean everyone. Upper Hoaten accommodates a total of 22 people! The secluded hot tub, accessible via the footpath decorated with pretty shrubbery, is the favoured spot for rest and relaxation. Inside each of the five cottages, expect homely country interiors decorated with warm, neutral tones, and quality comfortable furnishings. Being barn conversions, you’ll be spoilt with original retained features such as wooden beams and exposed stone walls paired with roaring woodburning stoves creating a wonderfully inviting and cosy atmosphere all year round.
Ploughmans is the furthest left if looking at the collection from the BBQ cabin and sleeps up to 5 people. No need to concern yourself with packing light if you’re booking this one, it’s all on one level. Home to one of the more spacious kitchen/diners in the cluster, Ploughmans is the best choice if you’re planning on spending a lot of time cooking up a storm in the kitchen. Next door is Shepherds Cottage; the smallest of the group sleeping just 2 people. Ideal for the new couple in the family or for granny and grandad who need their own space to retreat to once the little ones have worn them out in the day! family tree. The two doubles and one twin bedroom located upstairs are each fitted with skylights allowing you to fall asleep directly under the stars whilst the kitchen/diner and lounge both boast large sizeable windows which look out onto the communal grounds to the front. Coachmans Cottage is next door and marks the end of the terrace. What was once the old cart house has now been renovated into a 2 bedroom property sleeping three people. Floor to ceiling windows have replaced what was likely the old cart house doors letting in plenty of light to the L-shaped open-plan living space here. Last but not least is Drovers Cottage, furthermost to the right. Now stylishly converted, this holiday home used to be the old farm labourer’s cottage. Another single-storey accommodation, it stands detached from the other 4
properties at Upper Hoaten and now sleeps up to 4 people. Upper Hoaten Cottages could not be better placed for a Pembrokeshire holiday, as there is so much to do right on your doorstep. The toughest decision you’ll have will be trying to fit in everything you want to do in just one week. Located near St Brides, a must-do is to plan a trip to Skomer Island to see the infamous puffins. Peak puffin season is May to July and you can now pre-book your boat trips. Board the boat from Martin’s Haven, practically just around the corner, and you’ll be off on a wildlife adventure like no other. Cruise around the island or land on Skomer to get a photo up close. To visit Pembrokeshire without taking even a short walk along the Coast Path is almost criminal, and the views you’ll be rewarded with really are worth the effort. Venture around the headland at Marloes to see the epic golden sands used for filming in Robin Hood and Snow White and the Huntsman or start at Nolton and head to Newgale to trek the hilly stretch of the old coal region and Rickett’s Head.
much of the time. Dale Beach is a paradise for boaters with a bustling sailing community and easy slipway access whilst Broad Haven Beach and Newgale Beach are favourites amongst watersports enthusiasts. Here you’ll find surfers and windsurfers taking advantage of the decent waves and wide bays whilst calm days are better for kayaking and paddleboarding, as is the smaller and more sheltered shoreline at Nolton. Most of these western beaches are fantastic for sandcastle building, beach games and rock pooling, with larger expanses of soft golden sands in the centre and craggy cliffsides towards the side and rear.
St Brides Beach is one of the nearest beaches and is a recommended cove for divers as the underwater sea life is some of the best in the UK with relatively clear visibility

Walking holidays and Pembrokeshire go hand in hand. After all, it has arguably the best coastal path in the world (you won’t change our minds) with extraordinary views from every stretch.
U
pon its launch back in 1970, the 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path became the first National Trail in Wales and nowadays forms part of the wider Wales Coast Path, an 870 mile coastal trail that covers the entire Welsh coastline. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs from St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south, joining onto the Ceredigion Coast Path and the Carmarthenshire Coast Path respectively. Being rural Wales, you can expect a hilly pathway with some 35,000 feet of ascent and descent - certainly a challenge for those who intend on walking the entire thing! You may even see some determined (some might say a little bonkers) souls attempting to run the path and thankfully for those who prefer something a little easier and a lot more leisurely, there are stretches that are fairly level and wheelchair friendly too. That’s part of the beauty of a walking holiday in Pembrokeshire, it fills you with a sense of beauty and freedom you’ll fail to replicate elsewhere. Head out for a half-hour stretching of the legs, an evening stroll to see the sunset or a day-long hike and you’ll easily find what you’re looking for.
36
You needn’t pack any specialist equipment, though a decent pair of walking boots will go a long way - 186 miles and beyond you might say. That said, it’s always better to be prepared on the Coast Path. Pack a bottle of water, a map and a packed lunch or some jelly beans for when you need a burst of energy after a steep uphill climb and you’re away.
Over the next couple of pages, you’ll find a selection of our top choice cottages for a walking holiday in Pembrokeshire along with details of a great walk from our resident expert, Ian Pattinson. Did you know? The Wales Coast Path is also part of the International Appalachian Trail.
Ceibwr Bay, a popular spot along the world famous 186 mile long Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

W E AVE S & WAVE S SETTING OFF The walk starts from the car park at Melin Tregwynt woollen mill. The mill is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale Explorer Map OL35 - North Pembrokeshire at grid reference SM89373 34778.
OVERVIEW
Abermawr Beach
T
his 8.5km walk has a wonderful balance between history, farming, vista, flora and the coast - one or more of these aspects will always captivate you, ensuring that time and distance pass easily: isn’t Pembrokeshire so good at doing that? The first half of the walk winds through rolling lush-green fields and beautiful woodland whilst the second half explores a wonderful section of the coastal path back to Abermawr and Aberbach. Distant hills to the North and South West intrigue and there’s a great picnic stop at Pwllstrodur, the halfway point. On show are glimpses of Pembrokeshire’s industrial past, echoes of the Last Invasion, a once mighty- ramparted Iron Age promontory hill-fort and as you approach the end of the walk you find the Cable Hut: maybe this was not always been the tranquil place it is today!
WILL I GET LOST ?
T
his is a straightforward walk to navigate, although you need to look out for a couple of key turnings on the way round. The tracks are clearly visible most of the way and where they are not, there are clues and clear headmarks to aim for. There are plenty of finger posts to help along the way. BUT do take a map with you and know how to read it. By ‘setting the map’ (we recommend you use a compass) you will always be able to work out where you are and follow the route with confidence.
THE ROUTE
P
ark at the mill, next to the three large knitting needles and ball of wool on top(!) Leaving the mill to your left, follow the road over a small, flat bridge: enjoy the flowers and the neat garden with its own waterfall. The road twists and turns and very soon, you pass over a beautiful stone bridge and then meet a sign pointing right to Abermawr. Ignore this and stay on the road, climbing up the hill. Stop halfway up and look back to enjoy your first sight of Garn Fawr in the far distance. As you approach the top, you will see Tregwynt Farm and Manor House. This is where Lt Col Thomas Knox was dining when news of the French invasion reached him on 22 Feb 1797.
A finger post points diagonally across the field to Woodlands Farm (look for ‘Malgar’ written on the tanks). Excellent views of the coast open up to the right. Cross the stile in the hedge then immediately bear right down to Broom Wood. In the woods carry straight on down the slope on a clear path past the tree that looks like a rhino with a hundred horns! At the bottom of the slope, join a more obvious track and bear left. About 100m further on, go through a gate set back to the right and head for the small hamlet just beyond. Take the road up the hill with magical views of a small, picturesque valley to your left. It is a bit of a pull up the hill but by Pen-Yr-Allt, you are nearly there!
Look out for wild garlic in Spring
Immediately before a Tegfan cottage, turn right onto a well-marked grassed path. Pass Morfa Farm and head right at the ‘T’ junction. The open aspect of the walk here and the preponderance of gorse, when in full bloom, is spectacular. At the top of the rise, the track joins a metalled road by Carnachen-Lwyd farmhouse. Turn right and soon you will reach a finger post pointing to the coast. Pause for a moment to drink in these spellbinding elevated views of the beautiful coastline ahead of you leading down to Pwllstrodur. The ‘standing’ stone you pass might simply be a gate post from more recent times! Look at the valley to your right – just a sprawling mass of vivid orange-yellow gorse. How much better could this moment be? Descend to join the coastal path and head right. A short detour to the small beach at Pwllstrodur for a break is strongly recommended.
The petrified tree stumps of an ancient forest visible at low tide.
When ready, return to the coastal path and then onwards to the top of the hill: that’s it, no more hills today! Simply follow the path for the next two miles to Abermawr. Long distant views to Garn Fawr and over your shoulder, Carn Llidi by St Davids are worth taking in, as is Castell Coch Iron Age promontory hillfort (worth researching) but note that its bank and ditch contours are best seen by looking back once past it. The stoney beaches of Aber Mawr and Aber Bach are soon in sight.
A walk that just keeps on giving you more and more. One of the best in North Pembrokeshire. Before going onto the beach, pass through the gate into a turning bay for cars and follow the road about 75m to The Cable Hut: an information board tells you about the impressive history of this now sleepy hollow. Now wander down to the beach. If it’s low-water, wander down to below the shingle line and explore the petrified
peat beds and tree stumps from the ancient fertile coastal plain which existed here 5000 years ago. At the far end of Aberbach, take the obvious path to the right and return to Melin Tregwynt.

estled away in an area of rural woodland near Castlemorris, just a short drive from the sandy bay at Abermawr, you will find one of Pembrokeshire’s most popular attractions. Just one visit to this idyllic countryside location and we guarantee, Melin Tregwynt will capture your heart. Since the 1700s, there has been a working mill at Tregwynt though things have changed somewhat over the centuries. Traditionally, the wool used was brought in by local Pembrokeshire sheep farmers and handlooms powered by a water wheel were used. Nowadays, modern rapier looms have replaced the old and the water wheel is no longer used, it has since been restored and still holds a place in the mill for visitors to see. Take a self-guided tour through the mill past the water wheel and through the workshop, where you’ll even see the looms in action if you call in during the working week. The tour continues to a small video room where you can learn even more about the process via video presentations and information boards.
Alongside the white-washed stone building which houses the mill, you’ll find a bustling cafe and charming shop. Pair your visit to the mill with a spot of lunch or a cup of tea and a slice (or rather a slab!) of delicious homemade cake. On a sunny day, you’ll no doubt want to take a seat at one of the outdoor picnic tables or undercover wooden huts. Of course, no visit is complete until you’ve picked up a souvenir and so a visit to the shop is a must. Purchase a Melin Tregwynt tea towel as a small memento of your visit or treat yourself to one of their signature fabrics available as blankets, cushions, coats, bags, dressing gowns and so much more. Wherever you stay in Pembrokeshire, we’d recommend a visit to Melin Tregwynt followed by a stroll along Abermawr Bay and the Coast Path, particularly if the weather is warm and sunny. You’ll know when you’ve arrived at the mill, for the first thing you’ll notice will be three giant colourful knitting needles and a large ball of wool.

f you’re a newcomer to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and are looking to start your journey from top to bottom, The Alders is a great choice as it stands just yards from the official plaque which marks the start (or end) of the coastal path. Take a short walk through the dunes to reach the starting point or to access the sandy beach at Poppit Sands.
Resembling a period barn conversion, The Alders is a contemporary holiday home spacious enough for large family getaways with a farmhouse-style dining table suitable for the whole group to dine at. Whether you’re cooking up a homemade banquet or picking up a takeaway on the way home from your walk, there’s plenty of space for sharing meals here.
To venture further afield and continue your walk, you can easily hop on the Poppit Rocket coastal shuttle bus which follows a route through the rural villages and beachside locations; a bus stop for which is nearby. The practical slate flooring throughout the ground floor comes in handy after a wet weather walk when you need to kick off your boots by the door and shuffle on through to the shower.
Most of the bedrooms are set in the eaves boasting rural views over the brook and surrounding coastline, whilst the decking and enclosed garden to the rear is superb for barbecues and sunbathing.

H
ours spent fishing in Pembrokeshire can be truly idyllic. Pair intense orange sunset skies with the hypnotic sounds of the waves ebbing against the shore and you’re in for a peaceful evening waiting for a catch. Venture to the water before most are even out of bed on a calm spring day and you’ll be met with serenity and silence.
Locals flock to Manorbier Beach when the swell is good as you often can find a surplus of bass, mackerel and garfish. Marloes Sands is a favourite post-storm when the waters see an extra influx of dogfish, flounder and bass. Newcomers to the pastime may wish to book one of the sea fishing trips from local boat trip companies at St Davids, Dale or Tenby for some helpful tuition to the activity. The Cleddau Estuary is ideal for a spot of river fishing plus there are a number of trout fishing and coarse fishing centres throughout the county.
Dale pontoon proves popular for those introducing their children to the seaside activity of crabbing whilst more seasoned fishermen can enjoy long casting for rays. Mussels can be found in the wet sand at Goodwick whilst you can also catch cod, mackerel, bass and pollack.

any of our guests book the same cottage to stay in year after year, and have now been staying in that very same cottage for nigh on twenty years. And we don’t blame them! When you find the perfect holiday cottage which suits your needs, it really does become a home away from home. But why settle for a home away from home? Why not make plans to make your favourite holiday cottage your permanent home? Of course, we can’t guarantee everyone’s favourite holiday home will one day be up for sale, but can promise to help you find your own piece of Pembrokeshire. Just imagine your own little plot of Welsh land where you can lay your head 365 days a year, where your doggie can roam free from urban life and where you are surrounded by rolling green fields and beautiful blue seas. After years and years of our guests saying to us, “let us know if the owner decides to sell”, about their favourite cottages, we set up our real estate sister company, Coasty. Specialising in unique and distinct properties throughout Pembrokeshire, you’re sure to find a real gem in Coasty’s portfolio.
You may discover a magnificent beachside property with panoramic sea views, a rural haven in the depths of the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, or an idyllic renovated farmhouse just moments from the Coast Path. Finding your new home needn’t be a stressful occasion either. Let our friendly and professional team at Coasty help guide you through the process and find the right property which ticks every box. Whether that be a convenient village location, must-have water views, a remote setting or ample parking with room to store your boat - just let us know. Don’t forget, we can also let your new house for you when you’re not staying there. After all, a little extra spending money always comes in handy right?

t our heart, we are a local holiday cottage company who have been at the forefront of the self-catering industry for almost 40 years. Pioneering the quality end of the market, plus national and international marketing, Coastal Cottages has gained a reputation that has seen over 70% repeat business every year. Here at Coastal Cottages, our owners are an important part of the family and we’re always keen to extend that family – but we do only take on around 20% of the properties we are offered. First up, we want to stress that we’re not a call centre, nowhere near in fact. We are not in the business of processing visitors, we are quite the opposite. We’re a family-run company with a small team, all of whom live locally so we have a personal connection to the county around us and to what we do. We offer first-hand advice and guidance to guests. We’ve even established a Concierge team who work closely with local businesses to offer a holiday experience like no other. Our owners receive that same personalised advice and reliable service. Our Team schedule regular property visits throughout the year ensuring we get to know our cottages inside-out to give guests that extra level of service. As a future owner who wants to offer the very best, we’ll help you get there, even if that means casting our eye over interior design choices, helping choose the right facilities and giving our opinion when you’re looking for new properties to add to your collection.
We go the extra mile because we can; we live here, we care and would be delighted to talk through your next adventure. running of your cottage too overwhelming, sit back and let us handle it. At Coastal Cottages, we are the only agency to offer a full management package giving you peace of mind that everything will be dealt with professionally and efficiently on your behalf. With our own team of tradesmen and housekeepers, we can take care of the weekly changeovers and any maintenance needed. We can be as involved as you want us to be, from scheduling your annual PAT tests to making sure the garden is freshly cut, week in week out. Marketing Pembrokeshire is our speciality, and it is all done internally. We have dedicated online, social and press teams which promote nationally and internationally. We also work closely with online travel agents and overseas agents to promote your cottage overseas as well as to the UK market. The bottom line is we go the extra mile because we can; we live here, we care and would be delighted to talk through your next adventure, so give us a call on 01437 765 765.
We’ve learnt that no two properties are the same but luckily for us, no two guests are the same either. That’s why we endeavour to be flexible and personal throughout our service. And clearly, that ethos works. Many of our current collection has been with us since the days when we had only a handful of cottages and a small team back in the early 80s. Nowadays, most of these cottages are owned by the next generation, and we’re delighted they’ve chosen to stay part of the Coastal Cottages family. If you don’t live locally or simply find the daily
