Lazy

I

April

n italy we tell “Aprile dolce dormire”, It’s a saying to tell that when spring comes we all have a lazy period where your only desire is to sleep all day. It is true and this is why I think about the beginning of the season to a period where take care about ourselves, start a good diet, try new body products, everything to help us to emerge from the winter lethargy. So let’s see some advices in our beauty article, and don’t miss Accessories and Art columns to see top places to visit this month and which bag bring absolutely with you. Talking about beauty, I need to tell you that in this issue we interviewed a special person, a top model who tells us about his life out of high fashion. After working with anyone, from Steven Meisel to the Acqua di Giò campaign for Armani, Simon Nessman has embarked on a path that really does him honor. Read more at page 90. THE IT STREET STYLE STYLE TREND SO FAR! We take inspiration from people we look up to, whether that person is an influencer, celebrity or even your next door neighbour. But keeping up to date with the IT trends of the moment can be hard, especially when style is constantly changing. One minute we are rocking polka dots and stripes, the next we are dressed head to toe in pink. Give us a walk in wardrobe and we are ready to rock any trend given. But how can we seperate the best from them all? Were you all for the oversized suits? Or were you more of a person that fancied the fringe and all things feminine and chic?

article by Jordan Ellen Wood (continue to page 21)

Suited and Booted I like to thank Coco Chanel for channeling the trouser and suits for women. If it weren’t for the designer, then would we even have a suited and booted style? Would we be seeing Aimee Song and Negin Mershali walking the streets in the gender neutral trend? No! Suits don’t have to be tailored to look like you work in the office. You can adapt the trend to any style that suits you. Go vibrant, go oversized… Even go for an eccentric pattern. The world is your oyster in fashion. If you are one to shine brighter than the rainbow, then going for bold block colours are a must. The two colour combos everyone is loving at the moment is pretty pink and raspberry red. And who would of thought those colours would ever go together… Try a mint green with a bright yellow. Believe in yourself to be daring. Going for an all in one print can bring depth to a look. Pair with a graphic tee to casualise the look or go for a pussy bow blouse to complete your outfit that one step more. Stripes? Checks? Floral? Suits have your needs covered. We all have those days where we have had one to many boxes of chocolates.. And a food baby likes to appear. Despite oversized clothes being your best friend in these circumstances, they also have another benefit… For making your wardrobe look bang on style of course! AnSiesoversized blazer is great Marjan SS 2018 to create that delicate neckline, whether you want to overload with accessories or 2.1 keep it Lim minimal. Cargo Pants, €350 Phillip

Ice cream colours

As much as this trend makes me hungry for ice cream, the pastel coloured hues are perfect for a spring wardrobe. From violet to baby blue and a calm yellow, every colour you can think of has a baby pale version of it as well. The spring catwalk collections were filled with various pale tones that just craved our attention. And we desperately wanted them in our wardrobes. Goodbye black and greys! It is time to refresh out wardrobes! Pastel colours are great to pair with creams, whites and browns. However, if you are still finding it hard to venture out of black.. The cool colours go well with practically anything. Bring the colours into an accessorise or full on colour block, you will no longer think of food for this trend but not fashion.

Roaring prints Throwing it back to Debbie Harry in 1979, she made us fall in love with leopard‌ Well, everything. Leotards. Bodycons. You name it. The trend later on vanished and was then seen as a print never to be seen dead in, but with AW18 collections bringing in the roaring prints, it was only right we tagged along with the trend and ignored our minds. As much you would want to disagree with this next statement, you should treat animal print like you would do with black. Bring the 70’s print into your wardrobe with style, from a faux fur coat all the way to a statement bag. The print is also great with bright colours like red and orange, as it sits well with a more tart colour palette. Which trend is your favourite one of 2018 so far?

What is your skin type? Editor’s letter Meet the products that will be your best friends

We wonder why our teenage years were full of blemishes and constant trips to the drugstore. You would of thought the endless pile of dirty make up wipes would of cleared our skin, but it only made our skin worse. We never took care of our skin and today our faces are paying the consequences. But maybe this was also down to us notknowing what our skin type was (or still is). We look up to our role models and admire their poreless complexions, wondering how they get their skin so flawless. For us on a budget, we can’t afford face creams that cost £500 like Kim Kardashian or go to get snake blood injected into our foreheads (yes that is an actual thing). First thing is first. What is our skin type and how can we help tame it? Say goodbye to flakey skin. See you later oily complexion. I have got the top beauty products that will become your best friend. by Jordan Ellen Wood

LATEST Beauty by Jordan Ellen Wood COMBINATION SKIN You can’t just have one skin type, you have to have two of them combined. Don’t feel so unlucky. There are some products to help you calm your combination oily, yet tight skin. Combination skin overproduces oil in some places and under-produces oil in others, giving you the most-frustrating sides of both worlds. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers as they will irritate the hell out of your dehydrated parts. It is a complete no no to rich and heavy moisturisers, as they will clog your T-zone, and clay masks will just make your dry patches as dry as the Sahara desert. The No.1 lightweight moisturiser for all over hydration, hands down has to be the Neutrogena brightening sunscreen moisturiser. Cetaphil is one to cure everything as the daily face cleanser is great to help get rid of the dirt whilst nourishing.

OILY SKIN I fall under this category unfortunately and seems like no matter what drugstore product I used, the oil kept coming through. If you have skin that has a shine to it, then you are more likely to fall under the oily skin category. Oily skin is the exact opposite to dry, as in it overproduces the natural oil of sebum. Despite the advantage of fewer forehead wrinkles (who needs botox?), the negative side to it is the oily reflection your skin gives off. The oil can be a big contributor to acne and clog pore, which only means taking more consideration to cleaning your skin. You should opt for water-based products, mattifying powders, and, if necessary, anti-acne treatments. Avoid the heavy facial oils, thick creams and harsh scrubs. We want to prevent the oil, not make it worse. One of the best water based products online has to be the Snail Bee Essence. The light product is great when applying before your moisturiser. The moisturiser I live by is Clinique. The moisturizer is super light, but gives you the nourishment you need.

NORMAL SKIN

DRY SKIN

If you fall under the normal skin category, then

Is your skin tight, flaky and uncomfortable? You have dry skin. To have dry skin, it means your skin doesn’t produce enough natural oil. The natural oil that is sebum, helps to keep your skin moisturised and supple. When you don’t produce a lot of this, your skin can get tight and flaky, which just makes it uncomfortable. It doesn’t mean you will be leaving a trail of dry skin around anytime soon. Using the right products can result in helping keeping the lubrication you have but adding more oils and moisture. DON’T use foaming cleansers or face masks with harsh ingredients such as charcoal and clay. They will strip your natural oils even more (and we don’t want that). And if you have any products that contain alcohol, then BIN IT! Chuck it out and never let it touch your skin again. It will inflame your skin even more and we want to get rid of the irritation, not make it worse. Invest in the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. The creamy gel formula helps to condition your skin leaving it soft and gorgeous. Using this before a cream will clear out those dirty pores The right cream to go for is something that is rich full of nourishment like Cetaphil cream. And rumour has it, facial oils are perfect for those dry patches. Rich facial oils like Russell Organics Camellia Oil are great before you go to bed when massaging over your moisturizer at night.

well done! We are all very jealous of you. You have skin that is comfortable and not one bit greasy… The complexion of a supermodel. But even if you have normal skin, there are still a few products you should avoid… Harsh cleansers, excessively dry products and scrubs. All should have a red cross through them. To prevent dark spots and dullness, then go for all Nip & Fab products. They do everything we want them to do and your collection with them will only get bigger after the first buy.

Simon Nessman From being one of the highest paid male models and shooting for Armani Aqua Di Gio, to now being a director for an not-for-profit organisation, Simon Nessman knew his soft spot for nature would have an economical impact on the environment for the great. His organisation Cedar Coast Field Station is dedicated to ecologically grounded research and education in Clayoquot Sound. As Nessman models on the sideline, his sole focus is on creating a visual interpretation for the organisation he is building up. After interviewing Simon, I can already see a big future for the organisation. He won’t be just known for his handsome looks anymore‌ by Jordan Ellen Wood

Editor’s letter

- How did you become a model? i.e. were you scouted ?

I was scouted by one of my childhood friends older sister, Sophie Cottini. She set me up with Mode Models International out of Calgary, who then placed me with Jason Kanner in New York and everything sort of took off from there. - What has been the highlight of your modelling career? Booking the Armani Aqua Di Gio was probably the highlight of my career. It came at a time when I was really burnt out on living in New York and modelling, and it gave me the financial security to move to my dream home in Western Canada, where I was able to reconnect with the natural world that I was missing so deeply in the city. - Did you feel pressure to look a certain way whilst modelling? Well, yeah, when someone fly’s to you a Greek island and tells you upon arrival that you will be shooting a mens dress story there is some pressure for you to look a certain way. If your talking about my life outside of modelling, then no, not really. I’ve always been fortunate that my active lifestyle and natural body type have allowed me to fit within the acceptable size parameters of the fashion industry. - What was your typical day to day routine? Depends when you are talking about I guess. When I was living in New York on days off I would usually lounge around the apartment in the morning, and then drive out to my little woodworking shop in Brooklyn or drive out to Long Island to go surfing. More recently, during my years living in Squamish attending Quest University Canada a typical day would look something like this: wake up early in the morning on my sailboat, cram the previous nights readings into my overflowing brain for one hour, race to class, debate and philosophize with a group of 17 other students for 3 hours, procrastinate for an hour or so, hit the library for 4 hours, hit the climbing gym for a 1 hour break, hit the library for another 4 hours, and head back to the sailboat to sleep before doing it all over again the next day. These days my routine bounces back and forth between international work travel, and working on the land at my off-grid, boat access home in Western Canada. -When did you realise you wanted to take a different direction in your career? I have always been working towards the career that I am working towards now, which is driving boats, kayaking, growing gardens, building beautiful things, exploring the natural world and sharing similar experiences with others. Modelling has always been, and continues to be, a stepping stone towards the future I’ve envisioned. That has been really important because, for me, the job lacks the substance and intellectual stimulation to provide a well-rounded and fulfilling life. I think a lot of models—and people in general — struggle with this, and when asked about it I always encourage models to maintain a focus in their lives beyond the scope of their day job. - Now being a director of Cedar Coast Field Station, do you still find time to model or are you now solely focused on the company? I am still actively modelling, largely in an effort to support the Cedar Coast Field Station through its first years of operation. Last month I spent more time on the road working than I did at home, but during the busy summer season I wind down the modelling to be more available for helping out with development and operation of the station.

-How did you first get on board with the organisation Cedar Coast Field Station?

S

Cedar Coast is essentially the outcome of my thesis project at Quest University Canada, “Grounding for an Ecological Field Station.” Part one through three of the thesis document are academic justifications for the conception of an ecological field station in Clayoquot Sound. Part four of the document provides a blue print for the actual development of an ecological field station (Cedar Coast) at my home on Vargas Island. Today, thanks to an amazing team of staff and volunteers, the project has transcended my initial vision and it has become a collective vision with great potential.

“Humans have an incredibly high capacity for self-interest, which can be a positive thing if framed in the right context.” Picture yourself walking to your local gym, the warmth strongly hitting you, having finally arrived to your destination, bracing yourself to workout in a room full of equipments, and possibly several individuals. If not, do not worry. It is understandable that working out religiously in the gym, particularly in this hot weather can be very difficult at times. But what if I told you: you can lose calories, reach your desired goals, look stylish doing so and, enjoy the fresh air and sun. This can be accomplished by playing some of the most popular and amusing outdoor sports. Which sports you may ask? Of course I’m referring to; Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Running and cycling. There’s just something very therapeutic about working out in the fresh air. You will be embracing the atmosphere you’re in, appreciating the scenery surrounding you, and taking in the fresh air like never before. Whether you’re a beginner at playing volleyball or the next Serena Williams as you step onto that court, the aftermath of the work out will leave a smile on your face.

However, let’s not forget the importance of maintaining your clear skin when playing or exercising outside. Extensive exposure to the sun can be very detrimental as harmful UV exposure leads to sunburn and dehydration. To avoid this, it is essential to apply sunscreen all over your body before exposing yourself to the sun. Next, ensure you drink at least 1-2 litres of water a day. Sounds a lot but I promise you, you will not regret this. Our skin encompasses a great deal of water, therefore when our bodies lacks this fluid, it can lead to dry skin and possibly wrinkles. Water hydrates our skin, energises muscles and also aids towards the control of calories. So get drinking! Now, I’m sure you’ve already heard this before but you must also wash your face before and after exercising. Sweat clogs your pores, for that reason, washing your face with hot then cold water is imperative. As a result, you are remov-

-Being a director for this company, what does your role involve?

Developing the organization from the ground up with a small staff means that we are all wearing many hats on a daily basis. Much of my time has also been spent dealing with financing, permitting, legalities, networking, and facilities maintenance. Ultimately I am responsible for the broad scope development plan, including the completion of our new facility that we will be moving into in Spring of 2019. As I focus on the completion of our new facility next door to the existing facility, the rest of our staff will be taking over much of -Where do you see yourself taking the company? i.e goals The main focus right now is to grow our operations to the point where the society is financially self sustaining, while staying true to our mission, which is to preserve ecological health through placebased research and education that celebrates the cultural and biological diversity of Clayoquot Sound. This means bringing in more school groups, adult education workshops, and visiting research teams to utilize our facilities. Alas we are working hard not to fall into the flawed mindset of, “build it and they will come.”

Research vessel Salal arriving on site at the Cedar Coast Field Station.

-Did you have any struggles with starting up CCFS? Yes, there have been many struggles along the way, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Its challenging to create a large scale passion project and have it be viable in the current capitalist freemarket economy. At the end of the day there is not a lot of money in ecological research and education, because our economy does not yet recognize the full value of ecosystem goods and services. Unfortunately, we are still in the habit of leaving future generations to deal with the financial and ecological burden our wasteful consumerist lifestyles. On another note, we have chosen to operate in a very challenging part of the world, where massive storm systems make life on a boat access island logistically difficult. -How many people are in your team at CCFS? Do you all work closely together? We have 4 full time staff, 2 part time staff, a steady stream of volunteer support and 4 volunteers directors on our board. During the operating season, April through October, we are all living and working at the station so, yes, we work closely together. Everyone involved with this project has made sacrifices in one way or another to be part of it, so there is a strong sense of investment in the ultimate

success of the project. From what I’ve observed, a shared sense of ownership in any endeavour creates a highly productive positive environment. It turns outs us humans have an incredibly high capacity for self-interest, which can be a positive thing if framed in the right context. -Was it a long process getting CCFS up and running? I was enrolled full time in university until April, 2017 and we hosted our first group at the station four months later, so it was a quick turn around to get things up and running. That said, the field station concept has been years in the making and was ultimately inspired by the lessons learned from this place, and a desire to share similar lessons with others. -For people who are wanting to go down a similar path of starting an organisation, do you have any words of advice or tips for them? Make sure that the mission and vision behind the organization is strong enough justify a massively overworked and underpaid startup period. I felt any less passionately about our mission and the vision we are working towards than I would have folded my hand long ago. by Jordan Ellen Wood

HATS - GO BIG OR GO HOME According to French designer Jacquemus, it’s a case of the bigger the better when it comes to hats. Both he and Missoni sent maximalist woven hats down the runway that will throw some serious shade. If you’re looking for something lesser known, try Barcelona-based brand Elliurpi, whose vintage-inspired straw styles come with black silk ribbon ties for around the chin and are absolutely adorable.

SUNGLASSES - TAKE SHADE We may have moved on from millennial pink on our Instagram (or maybe we haven’t) but it hasn’t left our eyewear just yet. Rose tinted lenses have been seen in seventies style from Gucci and Acne Studios, whereas Louis Vuitton, Ashley Williams and Miu Miu are hailing back to the nineties with their Matrixstyle small rectangular lenses. We can’t decide which we like more so we’ll have to invest in both, oops!

JEWELLERY - STRIKE GOLD When it comes to earrings, bangles, pendants - whatever, whether you like ‘em large or fine, go for gold when it comes to jewellery this season. Think sun-soaked skin, silk headwear and a bold lip – wearing gold jewels just gives that extra glow that summer skin yearns for. Danish designer Orit Elhanati brings her Middle Eastern heritage to life in her designs, and is a firm favourite amongst the most stylish in Scandinavia. Another trend not to be missed is fine line face drawings on jewels – available everywhere from Mango to the ever-cool Elipsee – we’re seeing Matisse-style line drawings of women hanging from ears everywhere!

BAGS - TO HAVE AND TO HOLD Although on the hat front we’re saying the bigger the better, bags this season are much more minimal. Clean lines, simple silhouettes and buttery soft leathers from the likes of Danse Lente, Wandler and Carolina Santo Domingo are coming in neutral and paler pastel shades. Breakthrough London brand, Staud, have bridged the gap between the ever-popular Mansur Gavriel bucket bags and the woven trend nobody can seem to miss, with a nautical- inspired rope weave over its Moreau macramé bag. Also taking miniature form for SS18, Simon Miller’s teeny tiny Bonsai bucket bags aren’t exactly practical, but their acrylic hooped handles in assorted tortoise shell shades have made them top of our wish list. If you’re a love of tortoise shell or a bag with a hard exterior shell, Cult Gaia have updated their Ark model with an array of brown, black, orange and pink shaded styles that are simply to die for.
