The Hague
The Hague is well-known as the seat of the Dutch government, the so-called residence. And also as the home of a large number of foreign embassies and international organizations. Thanks to the International Criminal Court and the Peace Palace The Hague is also known as a city of peace and justice. And in recent years it has become a business hub thanks to the growing importance of the financial industry in the city. The Hague has much more to offer though. Especially for travellers who come to the city for a short (or long) visit. With a history going back almost 1,000 years, the so-called Hofstad (court city) has many impressive monumental buildings and sights: the Binnenhof (houses of parliament) and the Ridderzaal (the former courtyard of Count Floris V), Gevangenpoort (the ancient city prison and nowadays Torture Museum), miniature city Madurodam and the royal palace on Noordeinde. The many museums in the city are of exceptionally high quality. Take art house Mauritshuis – home of Johannes Vermeer’s world-famous ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and the ‘Stier van Potter’ (The real life painting of a bull by seventeenth-century painter Paulus Potter). Or the municipal museum of contemporary art, Gemeente Museum, and Escher in het Paleis – the former residential palace of the queen and nowadays an exhibition completely devoted to the work of mathematical illustrator M.C. Escher. Are you more into music, dance and dramatic art? The Hague has plenty to offer. De Koninklijke Schouwburg, the completely renovated Royal Theater, is a must-see. As is the Lucent Dans Theater, home of the world-famous NDT, the Nederlands Dans Theater. And big-screen movie theatre Omniversum. With 500,000 inhabitants, The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands (after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which both have close to three quarters of a million inhabitants) and it has a vibrant nightlife. You’ll find hundreds of cosy little restaurants and bars, and cosmopolitan clubs throughout the city. Enjoy dinner at some of the very best restaurants in the country; The Hague is the country’s centre of Indonesian cuisine, thanks to the many people of Indonesian descent living in the city. Nowadays, and especially in the vicinity of the compact Chinatown, the number of Chinese and Japanese restaurants is growing quickly. As is the quality of the tasty food. Come to The Hague for the ultimate shopping experience. Visit the numerous impressive avenues and picturesque alleyways; from the chic Dennenweg with its many attractive fashion houses, antique shops and art dealers to the popular streets Lange Poten and Spui. Or relax in one of the many parks (both large and small) throughout the green city. Scheveningen, the sea-resort of The Hague can be reached by public transportation and is just ten minutes from the city centre. With its completely renovated pier, the former beach palace Kurhaus and of course its many high-quality seafood restaurants, Scheveningen is truly a great place to visit. Wherever you might go – the old centre, stately Benoordenhout, creative Zeeheldenbuurt or the chic Statenkwartier – we’re sure you’ll feel right at home in The Hague. You’re very welcome.

SIGHTS & SIGHTSEEING
The Palace Noordeinde
The Palace Noordeinde (‘Paleis Noordeinde’) with its gracefully landscaped garden is situated on the Noordeinde. Compared to other European palaces, Noordeinde is modest and enjoys a wonderful location on one of The Hague’s shopping streets. After looking at the latest fashion, you could suddenly find yourself at the gates of this working palace. NOORDEINDE 68 KONINKLIJKHUIS.NL
THE BEST DISTRICTS OF THE HAGUE
The Hague is a city with many faces. Both upper-class and local Hague accents can be heard here, as well as many other languages. The Hague boasts elite city districts juxtaposed against working-class neighbourhoods. The city is a shining example of a multicultural society. Must see districts are City Centre, Hofkwartier, Zeeheldenkwartier, Statenkwartier, Scheveningen and Kijkduin.
Palace Garden The Palace Garden (‘Paleistuin’) is one of The Hague’s hidden gems. This romantic park with flowerbeds, fountains, hedgerows and ponds lies directly behind Noordeinde Palace. Every day the inhabitants of The Hague gather in this quiet oasis. On warm days, adults seek shade amongst the trees, children play in the grass and amorous couples enjoy a picnic in the park. PRINSESSEWAL
INNER COURT
Step through the famous entry gate into the historical Binnenhof (Inner Court) in the heart of our democracy. This is the place where the most important events in the nation’s history took place. It is also where the future is created. The Inner Court in The Hague is studded with monumental old buildings testifying of eight centuries of governing in the Low Countries, but it also has several ample open spaces, all freely open to the public. The Binnenhof is a must-see if you’re in The Hague. Take a stroll through the courtyard and admire the fairytale-like splendour or take the time to take a tour through the various halls. You won’t be disappointed!
DISTRICTS
CITY CENTRE The Hague’s bustling downtown area has far more to offer than the landmarks Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace, and Peace Palace. Boutiques, cafes, concert and dance venues, galleries, flagship stores, museums and restaurants offer something to everyone who loves culture, shopping and nightlife. It’s no wonder that The Hague was recently named Holland’s Best City 2013-2015!

BUURTSCHAP Buurtschap 2005 (named after the postcode) is a pleasant, lively district. This is where the famous Lange Voorhout is located. Nieuwe Schoolstraat is primarily known due to the PePijn Theatre set up by resident Paul van Vliet, where many cabaret performers have try-outs. Check out Kazernestraat with its many old coach houses and continue walking to Hoge Nieuwstraat.
ZEEHELDENKWARTIER To enjoy one of beautiful buildings and charming squares, a visit to one of The Hague’s most charming districts, Zeeheldenkwartier, is a must. The ‘Venetian’ part of The Hague, best described as a small maze, is located around Prins Hendrikplein. In addition to grand buildings, there are also beautiful 19th century almshouses in Zeeheldenkwartier.
HOFKWARTIER Immediately behind Noordeinde Palace, in the area stretching from the Palace Gardens and Torenstraat to Hoogstraat/Noordeinde and the Great Church, you will find the Court District known as Hofkwartier. This is the perfect district for shopping ‘in style’. Beautiful streets with old bricks and gables capture the imagination and rekindle the charm of a bygone era.

THE HOFVIJVER The Hofvijver, ‘Court Pond’, is an artificial lake in The Hague, the Netherlands. The Hofvijver area is the place where The Hague first came to life. Once a small lake in the dunes with a castle belonging to a Dutch Count, now this area is the Netherlands’ centre of government. It’s also the perfect spot to take a picture of the Hague skyline with the Binnenhof, Mauritshuis and modern architecture on the background.
Huis ten Bosch Palace has been the residential palace of the Dutch Royal Family since 1981. The palace is one of three official residences of the Royal Family, the other two being Noordeinde Palace in The Hague and the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Huis ten Bosch Palace was until 2014 the home of Princess Beatrix. At some point in the future, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters will move to the palace. Rumour has it that the palace pond is where Willem Alexander proposed to Maxima on the ice in 2001. © JURJEN DRENTH

The magnificent Japanese Garden can be visited only during a short period of the year, due to its fragility. It’s the only Japanese garden in the Netherlands from around 1910 and therefore has a high historical value. The Japanese Garden (‘Japanse Tuin’) was created in the beginning of the 20th century by the former owner of the country estate of Clingendael, Marguerite M. Baroness van Brienen (1871-1939), also called Lady Daisy. BELGISCH PARK Belgisch Park is a quiet, rather chic district with beautiful houses in various styles, from neo-styles to Jugendstil, dating from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. There are magnificent buildings here, sometimes with beautiful Art Nouveau features.
STATENKWARTIER The history of this magnificent 19th century district that boasts a wealth of unique architecture and beautiful streets, squares and lanes dates back to around 1895. Architect Berlage made his mark here on the Municipal Museum and monumental villas, such as Villa Henny.

RotterdamThe Hague Airport is less than 30 kilometres away and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is approximately 40 kilometres from The Hague. Once you’ve arrived in The Hague it’s easy to get around by public transport: it takes just 10 to 15 minutes to travel from the city centre to Scheveningen beach by tram or bus. To be able to travel by public transport in The Hague you will need an OV-chipkaart with sufficient credit on it for your journey. You can top up your OVchipkaart at the HTM service points in both The Hague Central and The Hague Hollands Spoor (HS) station. And if you don’t have an OV-chipkaart? You can buy a day card for one day’s unlimited travel on HTM transport at the Tourist Information Office (the ‘VVV’) in The Hague.
CELESTIAL VAULT
Feel the warmth of the peace flame on your back as you admire the most photographed building in The Hague: the Peace Palace. It is the seat of the International Court of Justice, the only judicial organ of the United Nations not located in New York, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
In the heart of the historical centre of The Hague you’ll find the only remaining genever and liqueur distillery Van Kleef. Founded in 1842, they are still in use today. Van Kleef sells a wide range of local liqueurs. Step inside and the craftsmanship, quality and history of this traditional local company are tangible.
A truly amazing experience: lying in the “Celestial Vault”, a big artificial crater in the dunes of Kijkduin. Immerse yourself in this work of art and gaze at the sky like you’ve never done before! In the dunes, where light can have such a tangible presence, artist James Turrell created a place to gaze at the sky.

ROYAL CITY BY THE SEA PHOTOGRAPHER ARJAN DE JAGER
T
he Hague is one of the most extraordinary cities in Holland. Not just because it is the government city of the Netherlands, but also because of its many monuments, historic districts and its location near the beautiful North Sea coastline. The Hague is also known as the ‘Royal City by the Sea’ and is called ‘the residence city’ because of the many members of the Dutch Royal Family who reside in its chic neighbourhoods. The Plein and Grote Markt squares abound with great restaurants, eateries, coffee houses and night clubs and are lively and welcoming places every day of the week. The Hague’s shopping is as varied as the city itself, ranging from luxury department stores and international top brands to cosy little streets filled with boutiques and specialty shops. It also has a lot of internationally renowned art and culture to offer. And last but not least, The Hague proves that a modern skyline and a historic city centre are perfect partners. Scheveningen, the best known seaside resort on the Dutch coast, is a great place to go for a suntan and water sports in summer and a bracing walk in winter. With attractions like Madurodam miniature city and the Omniversum dome movie theatre, The Hague is also a wonderful place for younger visitors. Truly, you have not seen Holland until you have been to The Hague!

ART & CULTURE
Jan Toorop
Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was one of the most important Dutch artists of the period around 1900. In that respect, he ranks alongside Vincent Van Gogh and Piet Mondrian. Today, he is best known for his use of Art Nouveau and fewer people know that he worked in many other styles. Designed to showcase the diversity of Toorop's oeuvre, this major retrospective at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague features more than 150 works and include top pieces from collections in the Netherlands and abroad. GEMEENTEMUSEUM DEN HAAG | STADHOUDERSLAAN 41 | GEMEENTEMUSEUM.NL
MONDRIAN Mondrian & De Stijl finally have a permanent home base in the Netherlands. Besides Rembrandt and Van Gogh, the work of De Stijl is the only art form to be included in the Canon of Dutch History. Yet up to now there was no one place in the Netherlands where you could go to get an overview of this most important Dutch contribution to modern art. Without De Stijl, the homes and streets and the very cityscapes of the western world would have looked very different. Moreover, the group that grew up around Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg continues to inspire artists, designers and architects even to this day. De Puy is a young portrait photographer in great demand. In 2014, she decided to go on the trip as a way of escaping the pressure of public expectations. Her success has a downside: the constant flood of commissions leaves her almost no time for autonomous work and she feared losing her sense of creative freedom. Her American road trip gave her the chance to go back to deciding for herself what to photograph. The result is a splendid series of portraits, now presented by the Hague Museum of Photography in the photographer's first ever solo show in a museum setting. Museum Escher in Het Paleis is dedicated to the world-famous artist M.C. Escher, whose art startled millions of people all over the world. Maurits Cornelis Escher, who lived from 1898 to 1972, was a genius at drawing impossible situations. If you take a closer look at his work you realise that Escher’s illustrations are mathematical masterpieces of optical illusion. THE MAURITSHUIS The Mauritshuis displays the best of the
Dutch paintings from the Golden Age. The compact, world-renowned collection, is situated in the heart of The Hague. Masterpieces such as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt, The Goldfinch by Fabritius and The Bull by Potter are on permanent display in the intimate museum rooms of the seventeenthcentury monument. More than two hundred top works from Dutch and Flemish masters have a place within the classic interior, which exudes a relaxed atmosphere with its silken wall covering, sparkling chandeliers and monumental painted ceilings. Interiors from Jan Steen, landscapes from Ruysdael, still lives from Coorte and portraits from Rubens give a rich and varied representation of the seventeenth-century paintings.
20
In the Royal Dutch Shell Wing, connected underground through the light foyer with a brasserie and a well-stocked museum shop, the Mauritshuis presents a varying programme of exhibitions. This museum wing in Art Deco architecture also houses educational activities (at the Art Workshop) and several rooms for meetings and hire. The Mauritshuis has been situated at the Hofvijver for more than three-and-ahalf centuries. The current museum was originally built as private home for earl Johan Maurits of Nassau Siegen. The governor of the Dutch colony in Brazil chose the best architect of his time for the classical building: Jacob van Campen. He started occupying it in 1644. The building then had several different inhabitants and functions during the following centuries. In 1822, the Mauritshuis became a museum, and it has since housed what was originally the royal collection.
The core of the collection consists of paintings that once were owned by stadtholder William V, Prince of OranjeNassau (1748-1806). Key pieces such as Dou’s Young Motheror Holbein’s Portrait of Robert Cheseman can be traced back to him. William V displayed the pieces in a specially built gallery at the Buitenhof, now called the Prince William V Gallery (link). French troops plundered William V’s collection during the French Revolution. When the collection returned, King William I, the son of Prince William V, transferred the collection to the Dutch state. In 1822, this ‘Royal Cabinet of Paintings’ moved to the nearby Mauritshuis and became a public museum. Over the course of the last two centuries, the collection grew from 200 to over 800 works of art. PLEIN 29 | MAURITSHUIS.NL

Discover the Modern These days, history is no longer presented as a chronological series of events that is held to represent ‘the whole truth’. Fresh insights reveal new connections and the ebb and flow of political, social and economic trends produce new feelings or concerns, which then find expression in art. The 19th-century idea of strictly chronological museum presentation is now outdated. Moreover, today’s visitors come to the museum with different expectations: they want to take a more active role and to discover their own narratives in the art on display. This is why the Gemeentemuseum’s permanent exhibition Discover the Modern reveals the personalities behind the work of top artists like Claude Monet, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Francis Bacon, Constant and Louise Bourgeois - the artist’s doubts and difficulties, exuberance and sensuality, search for utopia or playfully child-like approach to creation. A PREMIUM EXPERIENCE
De Bijenkorf AN EXAMPLE OF DUTCH RETAIL GENIUS EDITOR PAOLA WESTBEEK
What started out as a humble business selling textiles, threads and buttons, would one day become the famous Dutch department store ‘de Bijenkorf’ (in English, ‘the Beehive’). Approximately a decade after the opening of the first official location in Amsterdam, it was The Hague’s turn to welcome its own sophisticated and dynamic luxury department store. Today, de Bijenkorf in The Hague is one of the city’s top ‘must-sees’ as it guarantees customers the ultimate shopping experience. A Striking Building.
the visual allure of the imposing edifice. The decorative element of the façade is further enhanced with sculptures by artists such as Johan Polet, Hildo Krop and Hendrik van den Eijnde. When it came to the extravagant interior decor, no expense was spared, and lavish materials including bronze, marble, rare woods and stained glass were chosen. It is noteworthy that it was in this building that the Dutch first became acquainted with escalators. For visitors to de Bijenkorf, The Hague, this was quite a special attraction. Since its opening, the building has undergone several renovations, with the latest recently being completed. Though some of the original elements have been lost, it has managed to retain its modern appeal and it continues to attract clients who appreciate fine brands and luxury.
A “Premium Experience”
In 1923, the management of de Bijenkorf purchased a building site on Grote Marktstraat in The Hague. This street dates back to the late 1920s and is often thought of as Holland’s international shopping boulevard. Piet Kramer, a leading representative of the Amsterdam School, was chosen out of a group of six distinguished architects and entrusted with the design. Three years later, on 25 March 1926, the second branch of de Bijenkorf proudly opened its doors, welcoming some 20,000 people eager to see what the new department store had to offer. Impressed with what he saw, Dutch writer P.H. Ritter Jr. even referred to the store as “the palace of life’s delights”.
Starting in 2013, de Bijenkorf decided to invest more than 200 million euros within a period of five years in its so-called “premium experience” strategy. The main mission of this new approach is to offer premium service, a premium shopping experience and premium brands, thus providing clients with a luxury retail atmosphere with international allure. It is no surprise then that those who visit de Bijenkorf can expect to revel in a most unique department store – one where luxury and exclusivity are the most important distinguishing factors. De Bijenkorf, The Hague now boasts an entirely new cosmetics department as well as the country’s largest designer shoe department.
And rightly so. Compared to its predecessor, the building appeared more contemporary with its striking forms and expressive shape. A reinforced concrete frame supports a rounded curtain of undulating red brick walls, while vertical panels of stained glass windows add to
De Bijenkorf has certainly come a long way since it first opened its doors. Today it is not only the country’s most exquisite department store housing four floors of international top brands, but also an indisputable example of retail genius and a true icon of Dutch culture.

INNER COURT PHOTOGRAPHER ARJAN DE JAGER
S
tep through the famous entry gate into the historical Binnenhof (Inner Court) in the heart of our democracy. The Binnenhof is situated in the heart of The Hague’s city centre. It has been the location of meetings of the Dutch parliament, the StatenGeneraal, since 1446, and has been the centre of Dutch politics for many centuries. One of the towers, simply known as het Torentje (‘the Little Tower’; directly next to the Mauritshuis) has been the office of the Prime Minister of Holland since 1982. A large modern building at the south side of the Binnenhof since 1992 houses the House of Representatives, the lower but more important of the Dutch democratically elected Houses of parliament. Court Pond Standing at the Hofvijver, ‘Court Pond’, the artificial lake beside the Binnenhof, one has a splendid view at numerous buildings from different centuries. The Hofvijver was first dug out by the counts of Holland in the late 13C. Originally a natural body of water among the sand dunes, the Court Pond was extended over the years. The excavated sand was piled up on the north side of the lake to form the elevated area known as the Lange Vijverberg, now occupied by a graciously curving line of mostly 18C mansions. The 17C buildings along the short side of the lake, the Korte Vijverberg, include the King’s Cabinet and the city’s historical museum.
