SPOTLIGHT

PARK LIFE Amsterdammers immensely enjoy spending time in city parks, which mostly date from the 18th century. Trees, ponds and flowers surround vistors and the sounds of the city seem distant. Experience the green side of Amsterdam in any of its over 30 parks, which attract around nine million people each year. When the sun is shining and all the terraces are already packed, just grab a bottle of cool rosé wine and some music and head to the park to relax and ‘take a load off’. Must visits are the Vondelpark, Westerpark, Oosterpark, Sarphatipark and city beaches Blijburg and Pllek. The Vondelpark is the green heart of Amsterdam and a favourite among locals. The park is home to a selection of restaurants and cafés, including Vondelpark3, Blauwe Theehuis, De Vondeltuin and Groot Melkhuis. You’ll also find a skate rental shop, an open-air theatre and a rose garden with more than 70 types of roses in the park. The Vondelpark was designed by landscape architect L.D. Zocher and has been awarded national heritage status. It’s fabulous sunny weather and all the terraces are packed. Not to worry, just grab a snack from the shop and a cool bottle of rosé wine and head to the park. Whether you sit out in the sun at the Rembrandtpark, lounge by the elaborate fountain at the Sarphatipark or enjoy the great people watching in the Vondelpark, there are plenty of lovely green spaces in Amsterdam. Or if it’s the flame-grilled experience you’re after, grab a disposable BBQ. Barbeques are permitted in parks including the Vondelpark, Westerpark, Rembrandtpark, Oosterpark and Park Frankendael but be aware that open-air cooking is restricted in some parks. Several annual cultural events take place in the city’s parks. Not to be missed is the travelling carnivalesque theatre festival De Parade in the Martin Luther Kingpark. The Vondelpark and the Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam forest) offer open-air theatre performances. The Glazen Huis (glass house) and Orangerie galleries are great destinations for art and culinary events in Amstel Park and there’s always something happening at the Westergasfabriek.

THE CANAL ARTIST

HELLO AMSTERDAM

AMSTERDAM’S BOOMING BEE POPULATION

Bee populations may be in trouble elsewhere but in Amsterdam there are now 61 different bee species, up from 51 in 2000. The most common bee in the city is the common furrow bee while the hairy-footed flower bee, now lives in abundance in the city’s Vondelpark. Thanks to bee friendly projects, no longer use of pesticides and wild flowers have been sown in many places, the bees found their way back to Amsterdam.

What is his name? Nobody knows. Almost every resident of Amsterdam knows him though. The canal artist who sails his small boats along the canals, playing old Dutch folk songs on his trumpet and barrel organ. Every day, thousands of boats sail along the Amsterdam canals: from rickety old pleasure craft to more than 100 professional tour boats, but every skipper makes way for this floating minstrel. The photo is taken by Ecuadorian photographer Cris Toala Olivares for the book ‘The Canals of Amsterdam’. Available via Mendo (Berenstraat 11 - mendo.nl)

SPOTLIGHT

THE WORLD’S GREATEST CITY Amsterdam is alive, and it provides every visitor and every local with a place to call home. Though the city appears quite large, it is actually made up of a number of small villages, each characterised by warmth and authenticity. There’s everything from the upper class southern part of the city to the typical Amsterdam-style conviviality in De Pijp, and from the exotic scents of the Dappermarkt, to the city centre’s hip clubs. The monumental architecture found in the city centre, the modern architecture of the KNSM islands and the great number of museums offer the culture aficionado plenty to enjoy. Amsterdam is famous for its world-class museums and art galleries, fabulously quirky shopping and all kinds of entertaining delights, but on a bright, sunny day the best place to be is outside. Amsterdam has the largest and oldest city centre in the world that is still completely intact. Nowhere in the world are there so many 300-year-old buildings together in one place. This makes the metropolis of Amsterdam a unique city in the world. The canal houses, which have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2010, have inspired many architects all over the world. Amsterdam’s city centre is bustling 24 hours a day. Here you can find the best restaurants, the coolest clubs, the best concerts, the liveliest bars, the most beautiful theatres and historical museums. And even the canals themselves, such as the Prinsengracht, are teeming with life. Everyone in the city has a boat or knows someone who does. Amsterdam attracts 4.5 million visitors a year from home and abroad. All the beautiful places in the city are within walking distance of each other. The small streets of de Jordaan and the red light district in the centre are full of fantastic and unique shops. De Pijp is a beautiful old neighbourhood which is now so popular that everyone wants to live or go out here. The Oud-Zuid area is famous for its wide range of luxury shops and museums where the masterworks of Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer hang side by side. Oud-Zuid is separated from the Oud-West area by the beautiful Vondelpark. Every Amsterdammer is very attached to this park. Some come here to exercise, while others sunbathe or enjoy a concert in the open air theatre. More and more people are moving from downtown to Oost because there is so much going on there. In the outer neighbourhoods you can find very cheap and cheerful markets. Each area within the ring of Amsterdam is well worth visiting. Amsterdam has so many stories. Noord also has a unique look with its combination of old streets built on dikes and large residential neighbourhoods. Amsterdam Noord (North) is increasingly becoming more involved with the rest of the city. It is being built on the banks of the IJ and whole new neighbourhoods and entertainment areas are emerging that will soon be easily visited from the centre of the city via the Noord/Zuid metro line. In short, Amsterdam is in full bloom and it appears that it will only continue to grow.

Ever since it opened, city adventurers have found their way to Café Noorderlicht - one of the loveliest spots in Amsterdam. Café Noorderlicht is part of the NDSM (News, Dock activities, Stories, Members) terrain, which you can reach by ferry from behind Central Station. The café frequently hosts live music and other cultural events with a laidback atmosphere in an industrial building.

Located at the Marie Heinekenplein in De Pijp (Old South) is Barça. Its large terrace ambiance gives you the feeling that you get away from you in your own country. With a stylish interior and exterior Barça is undoubtedly one of the most trendy and fashionable spots in De Pijp. You will feel right at home and therefore can fully enjoy the delicious tapas and Mediterranean dishes on the menu. On the weekends you can dance to the live tunes provided by various DJs

In the heart of the vibrant neighbourhood De Pijp you find Gerard Douplein, a square filled with little cafes, restaurants and terraces. East of the city, Blijburg is the only authentic beach in Amsterdam considering that many people swim off the sandy oasis that sits in the deep water known as the Ijsselmeer. There seems to be always something going on at lively Blijburg, from performances by DJs and live bands to a delicious Sunday brunch. The food gets a thumbs-up for vegetarian and organic fare. A visit to Blijburg will feel like a retreat to a coastal paradise of the North.

This post-industrial spot with a beach-like atmosphere offers one of the best panoramic views of the IJ River. Using only the highest quality, organic products, Pllek serves homemade sandwiches and fresh juices. The hip venue welcomes a diverse and alternative crowd to relax on the manmade beach refuge or hangout inside by the fireplace. Pllek also is home to Amsterdam’s largest disco ball at night. Just remember the last ferry back to the mainland leaves at midnight during the week and 1:00 on the weekends.

The terrace from Star Ferry has by far the most spectacular view over the IJ river. Here it seems that the sun always shines. It’s a very nice spot when you are on a boat cruising Amsterdam and you are up for drinks and a little snack. The cafe is part of the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ concert hall, the Netherlands’ most important stage for contemporary music. On hot days, the enormous terrace is packed with sunbathers at picnic tables having a beer or preparing a BBQ. In winter people head inside to curlup in comfortable chairs in front of the open fire, enjoying the occasional live music and organic food.

The Harbour Club is located on the Eastern Docklands, boasting an international appeal, sparkling atmosphere and exceptionally great menu perfect for fish and meat lovers. Housed in a former wine-terminal, where the wine was once bottled, bottles are now being opened. The open dining room features wooden panels in the ceiling, creating a cosy cabin feeling. Be amazed by the immense space, the high art of cooking, the sushi lounge and the great sun terrace with a lovely view of the water.

In the heart of Amsterdam’s most famous park you will find Vondelpark3, the living room of the Vondelpark. While the allure of this monumental building is almost palpable, Vondelpark3 has an approachable personality. The breakfast, lunch and dinner menus consist of accessible and traditional dishes prepared in a contemporary way; thus it is old and familiar, but different. Vondelpark3 has a large terrace and on the upstairs porch terrace you can relax with a view over the beautiful trees and water of the Vondelpark. It’s by far one of the nicest terraces in town.

Every year as spring eases in to summer, urban areas around Amsterdam transform into city “beaches”. BovenNEMO (‘above NEMO’) sits atop NEMO Science Centre on Amsterdam’s largest roof terrace. The huge sea-green ship like structure is nearly impossible to miss just east of Central Station. As entrance to the deck is free, guests can come as they please without having to enter the museum and bask in the sun. There are lounge chairs lining the terrace next to sand pits, giving it the beach feeling.

De Belhamel is located on the beautiful Brouwersgracht canal, which crosses the Herengracht canal. This unique spot is situated at the tranquil edge of the Jordaan quarter and offers a magnificent view of both canals. In the summertime the outdoor terrace overlooking the water is a lovely place to enjoy fine dining or lunch. Like the location, the interior is very special. Both the restaurant and the secluded bar exude a romantic early twentieth-century Parisian ambiance, featuring many authentic art nouveau details.

INTERVIEW

In 2015 Amsterdam aims to reveal the city’s secrets by exploring each of its neighborhoods for 24 hours. The city is hosting a variety of events throughout the year that will help both tourists and locals get to know the city better. The ‘24h Amsterdam’ events take place for 24 hours, and are focused on each area of the city: Oost, West, Zuid, and Noord. Each area presents what it has to offer in a blistering 24-hour period. Shops, clubs and cultural institutions throw open their doors for some special surprises – perfect whether you live in the neighbourhood or come from another area of town and are keen to check out a new neighbourhood. Hello Amsterdam sat down with party guru Duncan Stutterheim and asked him to describe the perfect 24 hours in Amsterdam. Duncan Stutterheim is the founder of ID&T, the world’s leading event organizer for electronic music. Worldwide Stutterheim has people dancing at sold-out dance parties like Sensation and festivals like Mysteryland. Last year ID&T was sold to SFX and on July 1st of this year Duncan will step down as the head of ID&T to spend more time with his wife Lisca and their three daughters.

Morning

My 24 hours in Amsterdam starts early. I am a morning person. I get up with the sun. In an ideal world I start at 5:45 am with some meditation and then I run 3 laps around Vondelpark (a distance of 10 km). I prefer to run in the winter, when the snow crunches under your feet and there are fewer people. The Vondelpark is gorgeous and plays an important role in my life. After running, I come home and urge all the kids to get out of bed and then I make some sandwiches. I’m a real ‘family man’. I bring the kids to school by bike across the Max Euweplein and then again through the Vondelpark. It is important that children in Amsterdam learn to ride their bicycles

well. In Amsterdam you go everywhere by bike. I drink my coffee at the Koffiesalon on Utrechtsestraat, near Amstelveld, a beautiful square that seems like a village. Near my office in Amsterdam West, I like to stop by Anne & Max, a beautiful, spacious place with comfortable chairs. Here I like to drink my coffee and I read the newspaper. A simple, old-fashioned newspaper. In the morning I also like to exercise at Soda Bodyfit. Radmillo Soda is always able to motivate me even if I just don’t feel like working out.

Afternoon I like to have my lunch at the office, where I can get a great variety of organic food. We are building a roof garden to grow our own vegetables and herbs. Next year our office is moving to A’DAM Tower on the banks of the IJ in Amsterdam Noord. It’s a multifunctional building with a boutique hotel, a club, and a restaurant and bar with panoramic, 360-degree views of the city. I also like to have lunch at Buffet van Odette. Here I eat a lot of products from local suppliers such as the smoked salmon from Frank’s Smokehouse, bread from Hartog and lots of goodies from De Lindenhoff, a farm just outside the city. If I’m going to watch football with my Ajax football club, I like to drink a beer with friends in Café De Ster, a genuine Amsterdam pub. I also like to visit Café De Heuvel on the beautiful Prinsengracht canal. I also visit the hotel bar of the Hilton because our boat is there. I love Amsterdam on the water. Boating is fantastic.

Evening Every week I eat with my wife Lisca at restaurant Toscanini. This restaurant is fantastic and it serves the best Italian cuisine. My favorite place is Nacional, a French-orientated restaurant near the Leidseplein. I like to go there with friends on Friday nights. Along with Casper Reinders, Lisca is co-owner. She pays special attention to the food; she is what you call a ‘foodie’. I love taking my time to enjoy a meal with good company. When I go out at night, I like to come to our clubs Studio80 on Rembrandt Square and The Warehouse in Amsterdam West. Here you get the real ‘rave’ feeling.

of these festivals have been organized by ID&T. But the good thing is that there are many organizations that have found their own place. I think DGTL on the NDSM-wharf is a good festival. As is Dekmantel in the Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest). Going to a festival is much different from going to an event at a night club. At a festival, you’re just out there on your own, you experience it very differently. And it is during the day, and often in the sun.

Artzuid, a 2.5-km-long art exhibition throughout Berlage’s Art Deco district in Amsterdam South. The most beautiful sculptures of 21 international contemporary celebrities, including Georg Baselitz, Jaume Plensa, Tony Cragg, KAWS, John Chamberlain and Mimmo Paladino, are displayed on the long green lanes of the Appollolaan and Minervalaan.

Why is Amsterdam the most beautiful city in the world?

Every summer I look forward to my favorite festival Welcome to the Future. I can relate to the visitors and I love the Tech House. And of course I look forward to Sensation in the Amsterdam Arena. Every year 40,000 frenzied dance lovers come to the festival dressed in white to experience an unprecedented show. This year, Sensation is extra special as it is the 15th edition and it coincides with my resignation at ID&T. On such a night I’m the host and, just like in a restaurant, everyone wants to shake hands with the owner. It’s the same at Sensation, except that at Sensation there are a few more visitors than there are in a restaurant.

Amsterdam is a global village; it’s a relatively small city with about 800,000 people. You can reach everything here by bicycle within 15 minutes. But we participate on the world stage. Let someone name at random ten cities in the world and Amsterdam will be among them. Everyone loves Amsterdam. The energy that exists here is unique. What we create here is fantastic. Not just in my field, electronic dance music, where we are leading the world, but also in museums, exhibitions and architecture.

What do you expect of the festival season this summer?

What is Amsterdam missing?

This summer there will be 130 dance festivals in the Netherlands. Each of these festivals will have more than 2,000 visitors. Many

What should children absolutely experience in Amsterdam? If I can still mention something that I miss in Amsterdam it is activities for young children. Nemo Science Center is special, the Kinderkookcafe in the Vondelpark is fun and The National Maritime Museum is beautiful and interactive. And boating on the canals is something everyone with children should do.

Being together with friends and family. The cafe. And Ajax. The coziness that we know, that you miss when you’re so far away from home. You get so much energy from adventures abroad, but friendships and your family are still very important. And our house on the canal is our home. The property, an old Amsterdam warehouse, is several centuries old. As someone said it well recently: We are perhaps the owners now. We inhabit it. But actually we are no more than passing through in the long history of this old Amsterdam warehouse. It will stand here, hopefully, for another hundred or two hundred years yet.

On July 1st you are stopping at ID&T. And then? For a year I’m not going to do anything. As the owner of A’DAM Tower I will be busy with that. Occasionally I will be a guest speaker at The School of House, an initiative that I jointly set up which allows future DJs, event organizers and managers to learn the intricacies of the dance scene.

What is your favorite memory of Amsterdam?

How would you welcome visitors to Amsterdam?

Queen’s Day. Which, because we now have a king, has been renamed King’s Day. Some of my fondest memories are related to this day. By far. Every year I live that day again like it is my last. It felt quite different this year. It’s the best day of the year.

I would go sailing with them on the canals and the IJ. On board we would have a lunch with fine wines. From the water you see Amsterdam at its most beautiful. It’s really amazing. It’s the best welcome you can get in Amsterdam.

The BEST

COFFEE BARS in Amsterdam

The Amsterdam coffee scene has massively developed in the past years, and is internationally acclaimed and credited for its baristas, roasters and bars. Literally, there are a hundred coffee spots in Amsterdam. Most of them will serve a decent cappuccino too. But there are a number of independent specialty coffee bars that are truly driven by passion. Whether it’s brewed coffee, espresso or a flat white: this is something you taste in every sip. Please, forget about Starbucks and other coffee chains. These spots will serve you the best cup of coffee you’ve had in a long time. Here are the fifteen best coffee bars Amsterdam has to offer. THE BEST COFFEE BARS

Coffee Terminology White Label Coffee White Label Coffee is a coffee slash hipster heaven. The owners, those two guys behind the stunning espresso machine on the stage floor, are among the best baristas and coffee roasters in the country. Expect a good cup of coffee, like their double naked espresso. It’s a relaxing bar with a very smart interior design. JAN EVERTSENSTRAAT 6 - WEST

Specialty Coffee can be described as a

coffee movement that’s mainly focused on quality and sustainability. It exists through dedicated and passionate people in the entire chain of coffee (growers, traders, roasters, barista’s and so on). The bars in this list al fit the specialty coffee description, by serving the best cup of coffee possibly.

Filtered coffee Also referred to as slow

coffee. Hot water is poured or dripped over grinded coffee. The water slowly extracts all flavour from the coffee. There are several methods; non-digital, often used are the Chemex, V60 and Aeropress.

Koko Coffee & Design The charming ladies of Koko know their coffee and their fashion. Both are combined in this coffee bar and fashion store in the heart of the red light district. Koko serves the best coffee with unique artwork, jewellery and exclusive fashions, creating a mix of fashion, style and taste. It’s all about quality in this cosy design spot. Roasting green coffee beans is very

determining for the flavour and aroma of the beans - and in the end - your cup of coffee. The favourable taste of the specialty coffee scene nowadays is to burn the beans less dark, so more flavours can express and develop themselves.

steamed milk, often hearts, leafs and other symbols are made when pouring the milk over the espresso. This is called latte art.

Barista’s are the guys and girls that serve

your cup of coffee. Barista is the Italian word for bartender. Current barista fashion is full of beards, fixed gear bikes, tattoos and all things hipster.

Espresso Concentrated coffee made when hot water is forced at pressure through fine coffee grounds.

Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters There are plenty of outstanding coffee bars in Amsterdam West. One of the frontrunners is Lot Sixty One. It’s more of a brew coffee place than a latte- or cappuccino place though. Nicely decorated, raw and vintage, and with a great collection of home baked pies and pastry. KINKERSTRAAT 112 - WEST

Ristretto Espresso pulled short —

with less water — for a smaller, more concentrated drink.

Americano A shot of espresso diluted with hot water.

Flat White Double Ristretto shot. Fresh cold milk steamed, 5 to 7 ounces.

Sweet Cup Coffee Sweet cup is a very small, sweet place. Don’t be fooled, the owners are serious about their coffee. Like most bars nowadays, the beans are roasted in house and the owners slash baristas craft an amazing cup of coffee. Located in the heart of the noisy Leidseplein area, this is a place to relax and have a sweet cup of coffee. LANGE LEIDSEDWARSSTRAAT 101 - CENTER

SUCCESS STORY

LEONARDO BELLONI & DAAN BONSEN

GIVING AMSTERDAM PANACHE The success story of the men behind Chapter21, Franklin Bar & Kitchen, Hugo’s Bar & Kitchen, Carter Bar & Kitchen, Americano Bar & Kitchen and Café Panache and many more to come EDITOR LIZET DEUTEKOM PHOTOGRAPHERS NIELS STAVORINUS & 31PICTURES

Within the last 2,5 years Amsterdam has seen seven new hot spots arise that all share two common traits: a high quality standard and the fun loving but firm leadership of Leonardo Belloni and Daan Bonsen. “We only create the kind of places that we like to visit ourselves.” The entrance of their off ice is hidden behind a creaky door at the old food industry market in Amsterdam West. A building off the beaten track that now houses a night club and restaurant, and will be the location of Leonardo and Daan’s latest project; a full blown club night - in collaboration with three other partners - that’s due to kick off at the end of the summer. But lets start at the beginning. Three years ago Daan and Leonardo, then both working in the cocktail and liquor industries, joined forces. “I got the opportunity to become partner at the company I was working for” Leonardo explains, “and that made me think. I decided that I wanted to have my own business, something I could build up from the start.” Daan happened to know about the perfect location. They had a look, signed the lease and a few months later their f irst bar Chapter21 was alive and kicking. After Chapter21 soon came another, Franklin Bar & K itchen, followed by Hugo’s Bar & K itchen, Carter Bar & K itchen and Americano Bar & K itchen. All within two years, including their brand new Café Panache. The latter opened its doors only two weeks ago at the time of this interview and already received raving reviews. “It’s very different. It has an international atmosphere but it’s still very raw. People walk in there jaw dropping, they’re really overwhelmed by the space and the decor.” Leonardo says proudly. Located at a former market storage at the Ten Katemarkt, also in the West part of Amsterdam, Café Panache features some of Leonardo en Daan’s signature characteristics. High quality products on te menu and a strong emphasis on the bar.

“Those play a crucial role in all of our restaurants. We really invest in a high quality standard. Be it in our products, our people, or in the decor. Quality is important on every level, from the backoff ice to the kitchen. All our places have their own concept and identity, but people can expect hight quality in each and every one of them.” That’s all very nice, but how do you get seven different restaurants and bars up and running within such a short time frame? “One thing leads to another, really. It’s about catching the right moment. At one point we decided: okay, this is getting serious, so let’s go for it. After Chapter21 and Franklin Bar & K itchen we started to collaborate with business partners in each new venture. To have someone there who runs things on a daily basis and is the eyes and ears of the place. It turned out to be a great formula.” That doesn’t mean that the guys don’t know exactly what’s going on. They visit and consult at every place almost daily. “It’s been a little hectic, indeed. But in a good way.” What keeps them going is a strong belief in their own vision and concepts. “I could never create a place without my heart being in it” he says. “You just try to put yourself to the test and see how far you can go. Ultimately you want to grow bigger and show the world what you can do. I really want to make Amsterdam a little bit nicer. We all do. We have a certain philosophy and that’s what we try to express.” “In the end it’s just plain hard work. People tend to forget that when they see us chatting at the bar. We are working eighty hours a week to arrange everything. But it’s appreciated by many people and that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Whether I’ll continue working like this for another f ive years is a different question. At this time I am very happy about everything.” And the future? “I would like to expand our business internationally. To Barcelona maybe. That city feels like a second home to me. It won’t be next year, but I do not rule out that in a year or two I’ll take the leap. I don’t really dream. When I think of something it often becomes reality, eventually.”

De 9 Straatjes stands for nine cosy and picturesque shopping streets. In the middle of theWorldHeritageCanalBelt.Justafewsteps behind Dam Square. Or on the way from the Rijksmuseum to Anne Frank House. This delightful neighborhood is brimming with unique shops, charming eateries and great ambience. Anyone spending an afternoon here is sure to take home unexpected finds. The six bigger streets (Reestraat, Hartenstraat, Berenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Runstraat and Huidenstraat) refer to the trade in animal skins for the leather industry. They offer a complete overview of all the building styles of the old city center of Amsterdam. Most buildings date back to the 17th century and are small, monumental shops. Even after 400 years it is still very lively with artisanal businesses, charming bars and restaurants and galleries and a unique offer of specialized and mostly authentic shops. From mishmash to chic, from ethnic to old Dutch, from doll doctor and Spectacles museum to naughty lingerie and bags ‘con amore’. And from old to new, or better said: from antique and vintage to contemporary. In short: who goes to De 9 Straatjes, will definitely buy something special and different, whether it is old or new. The funny thing is that few people – even the people from Amsterdam – know the difference between the streets. More than once you will hear: “I have bought something really nice!” “Oh where?” “Uh, somewhere in De 9 Straatjes.”

But the clothes they liked were nowhere to be found, or at least, not within their price range. So they decided to give it a go and start up a collection themselves. Designer Catherine Talpe: “If you want to look good, first of all you’ve got to feel good. If an item is not flattering, comfortable and affordable, we won’t offer it.” This simple philosophy has paid off. Presently, WTG has brand stores in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brugge, Hasselt and Berlin. WTG offers feminine shapes for feminine bodies. Special attention is given to a perfect fit, highlighting the silhouette while providing camouflage where needed.

After 25 years of working as a pastry chef and patissier – in for example Hotel Krasnapolsky –owner Ben devoted himself to his great love: chocolate. The first 3 years he sold his handmade chocolates and pralines through a web shop, but recently he opened Tasty Chocolate on Reestraat. During the morning you can see him at work: making pralines, peanut clusters, huge chocolate chunks with different kinds of nuts made from the best Belgian chocolate. If you are looking for a real treat, stop by for coffee and Tasty Chocolate.

SHOPPING DE 9 STRAATJES De Negen Straatjes (Dutch for “the nine little streets”) is a neighborhood of Amsterdam. It consists of nine side streets of the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel in central Amsterdam which have been promoting themselves with that name since the 1990s. Together they form a subneighborhood within the larger western Grachtengordel (“Canal Belt”), one with many small and diverse shops and restaurants. The construction in this area goes back to the first half of the 17th century. The Negen Straatjes is bordered on the north by the Raadhuisstraat and on the south by the Leidsegracht. In between, the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel are interesected by three cross streets. In recent years the Hazenstraat, a side street of the Elandsgracht in the Jordaan, close to the Negen Straatjes, has called itself the Tenth Street (Dutch: Tiende Straatje). HUIDENSTRAAT 01

THE ROAST ROOM

WALTER WOODBURY BAR

DE BELHAMEL

The people behind the great success of fish restaurant Vis aan de Schelde in Amsterdam Zuid also started The Roast Room, a unique meat-experience in Amsterdam. Surrounded by the craftsmanship, open kitchens with Beech ovens and the cool yet classic interior, you can enjoy the finest cuts of meat, burgers, meat products and sausages from the restaurant’s own butcher shop. The Roast Room consists of The Roast Bar and the Rotisserie. The Roast Room is a brasserie-style restaurant on the ground floor. The Rotisserie is a finedining restaurant on the first floor. The wonderfully designed restaurant features a large, sunny terrace.

The East is where it’s happening, so we should be in the East. Adventurer Walter Woodbury departed in 1851 at the age of 17 for the Dutch Indies, to photograph the island of Java. Now, more than a half century later, located on the turbulent Javastraat, is The Walter Woodbury Bar, a bar and restaurant inspired by the world of Walter Woodbury. It’s a fantastic place where you are welcome at any time of the day for coffee, lunch, dinner and drinks. And like the Java neighborhood in Amsterdam Oost itself, the menu is exotic and adventurous at the same time. The Walter Woodbury Bar is a great bar and restaurant with a tropical vibe and a nice terrace. An absolute must.

De Belhamel is located at the intersection of two of Amsterdam’s most beautiful canals: the Brouwersgracht and the Herengracht. It is one of the city’s prettiest spots, quietly situated at the edge of the Jordaan area and offering a splendid view of the canals. The restaurant’s cuisine has French and Italian influences, but the menu also offers traditional Dutch dishes. In addition to our fine dining, De Belhamel is Amsterdam’s place to go for hot and cold lunches. The hospitality and friendly ambiance draw a pleasant mix of local residents. In the summer dinner is served outside. Not only the location, but the restaurant’s interior is unique as well. The venue is entirely decorated in the early 20th century artnouveau style, with many original details.

OTIUM BOEINGAVENUE 2 | +31 20 655 3232 OTIUM-RESTAURANT.COM

CHEF TOM BOERE

Tom qualifies his cooking style as ‘informally chic’ and prepares classic French combinations with a contemporary presentation. All dishes are prepared with passion and care and the use of local and organic seasonal products plays a major role in his kitchen. Tom enjoys surprising his guests and tries to combine the hotel lounge classics with a high-quality culinary experience in the restaurant..

What if you’re staying outside of Amsterdam’s historical city centre and are in the mood for a highquality culinary experience in a relaxed atmosphere? Well, do not hesitate and head to restaurant Otium. Located inside the Radisson Blu hotel at Schiphol-Rijk, near the international airport and amidst a thriving business centre, it’s a perfect getaway for an attractive evening out, whether just for drinks and a simple meal, or to enjoy a beautiful five-course dinner. The open secret of Otium is its awardwinning chef Tom Boere, who’s long and impressive international career includes a Bib Gourmand and awards by Michelin and Gault Millau. After running his own prestigious restaurant from 2006 until 2013, he joined the Radisson Blu as head chef and culinary advisor. We don’t need any more convincing: Otium it is! Tom and his team start us off with a ‘3D of fish’, containing yellow fin tuna singed with chia seeds, pickled salmon, king crab and a fried quail egg. It is a soft and refined dish that is paired with a fresh Sauvignon

Blanc. This is followed by a duck terrine with asparagus and a glass of fruity Chenin Blanc. Next, our glasses are filled with a lovely Chardonnay with a peachy aroma, which matches the beautiful Dover sole perfectly. The fish is served braided, lying on top of an ‘escabeche’ of octopus - a South American style marinade that truly lifts the taste of this dish. A slightly spicier Shiraz is the precursor to smooth tenderloin with a ‘tomatotized’ potato mousseline and truffle gravy. The dishes are made up like little pieces of art. Our dessert is paired with a matching glass of wine too, a Moêt Nectar Imperial this time. The sweet bubbles make the chocolate mousse with blood orange sorbet and mango coulis extra special. While the menu also mentions classics like Caesar salad and American-style steak, we are blown away by this feast of flavours and highly recommend ordering one of the variable four, five or six-course meals and let yourself be surprised.

CHEF’S SPECIAL

Located in a former tram depot, restaurant Remise47 is where both locals and visitors converge to dine and socialize. A tranquil spot within Hotel De Hallen, the restaurant is just a stone’s throw away from Amsterdam’s major art museums and the boutiqueladen neighbourhood of the Jordaan. Set in the emerging and charming Oud West (‘old West’) area, Remise47 serves an appealing French/International cuisine, paired with excellent wines and imaginative cocktails. The first thing chef Gijs van der Hoofd tells us is that they don’t usually distinguish between starters and main courses. You just mix and match several dishes to your own liking. We ask him to mix and match for us, to experience a signature menu and be surprised by his choices. And we do not regret it. In front of me is a terracotta flower pot, filled with a ‘plant’ made of pappadums and red charts, rooted in a parsley hummus ‘soil’. Strange? A little. But incredibly tasty. My colleague sitting across the table enjoys a lovely little dish with scallops ‘meunière’, served with small

beetroot and rose jelly cubes and herring caviar. My glass is filled with a lovely freshsour Sauvignon, while a light Chardonnay matches the scallops perfectly. We continue with a classic, well-executed truffle risotto and a surprising langoustine carpaccio. The latter is served with cauliflower, beurre noisette and a poached egg, ensuring a tangle of different textures that’s refreshingly different and amazingly delicious. We’re still impressed when a panfried duck liver with an onion tarte tatin and a slow-cooked sirloin of beef arrive at our table. Both are nicely matched with a spicy Sicilian Shiraz. Although we almost forget to enjoy our surroundings, it’s well worth mentioning the thoughtfully designed Scandinavian vintage interior and inviting terrace on the other side of the high windows. The industrial structure of the old tram depot (‘remise’) is still recognizable, while the modern yet warm decor provides a trendy, urban feel. It’s not hard to imagine ourselves sipping a cocktail here this summer, or any other time of the year for that matter.

What is it like to hear the sound of laughter across the calm water on a balmy summer evening, or to kiss your sweetheart under a wooden bascule bridge? BRIGHT LIFE BY PETER SMIT

FLYING THE DUTCH COLOURS RED / WHITE / BLUE

THE ULTIMATE VAN GOGH EXPERIENCE

HAMPSHIRE HOTEL - AMSTERDAM AMERICAN

DUTCH DESIGN HOTEL ARTEMIS

HOTEL OKURA AMSTERDAM

From April until July 7th, thirty paintings from the Amsterdam artist Peter Smit are displayed at the Amsterdam American Hotel in the exhibition: “Bright Life”. Peter Smith is a graduate of the State Academy in Amsterdam and colour, light and atmosphere are important elements in his paintings. He paints “en plein air” the city and the beach and finds his inspiration on the street: on terraces, in the park and along the canals; people are always part of his paintings. He paints models and portraits live in his studio at the 2nd Nassaustraat 8, where - by appointment - visitors are very welcome. His motto is: Always look on the bright side of life.

Throughout 2015 Dutch Design Hotel Artemis is celebrating its 10th anniversary. As a kick-off for the festivities, a purely Dutch theme: “Red, White, Blue, Orange; of Dutch soil” was chosen for the exhibition of nine - again established as a novice Dutch designers and artists. Designer duo Visser and Meijwaard show their latest collection: “Truecolors” with colourful furniture; Rose Sanders shows her collection “The Chamber Whisperers”; and there are the roughly six-foot-tall medallions of Carina Wagenaar. Further exhibitors include Tim van de Weerd, Deef Lighting, Joaney Korevaar, Liesbeth Bos, Studio Geanne and Ilse van den Berk. A special Dutch-themed Food & Drink Design menu is served in the restaurant-bar “De Stijl”. The exhibition is open every day until June 7th - entrance is free.

Until May 30th the Okura’s Van Gogh package gives real Vincent van Gogh enthusiasts the opportunity to immerse themselves in the art of the Dutch master. In the lobby is the exhibition of 3D reproductions of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings, known as the Van Gogh Museum Edition Collection. On the 23rd floor, seated at the Chef’s Table in the kitchen of two-star restaurant Ciel Bleu, guests can enjoy a special five-course dinner, a great panoramic view and a Van Gogh Museum Edition not on display for anyone else. The recently opened Van Gogh Suite is 105 m2 and has a fully equipped private kitchen with dining area and lounge and two Van Gogh Museum Editions.

DINNER AT THE CHEF’S TABLE A PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES

NEW CHEF BOBBY RUST OFFERS UNFORGETTABLE CULINARY EXPERIENCE

GOLDEN KEYS CONCIERGES

INTERCONTINENTAL AMSTEL AMSTERDAM

SOFITEL LEGEND THE GRAND AMSTERDAM

HOTEL PULITZER AMSTERDAM

A dinner in the middle of the kitchen, at the chef’s table, is without a doubt an amazing experience. You’re seated in the beating culinary heart of the Amstel where over thirty chefs and pastry chefs are at work under the leadership of Rogér Rassin and his sous chefs. You’ll experience the sights and sounds of what happens behind the scenes in the kitchen. You’ll see how the passionate cooks work like a well-oiled machine to ensure that every dish is prepared to perfection before being served at your table. The Chef’s Table Experience is suitable for four to eight people (€300 per person) and is closed on Mondays.

Bobby Rust (1982), the new chef de cuisine at Bridges, learned the profession of great chefs such as Robert Kranenborg, Jonnie Boer and Sergio Herman. Via chef Ron Blaauw, with whom he worked in twostar Ron’s Gastrobar, he started at Bridges restaurant at the end of 2014. Before that, he gained experience at top restaurants like Le Cirque, De Librije and Oud Sluis. Ambition and drive characterize Rust: “I was shaped by the best teachers. The desire for perfection, love for the base, it is in me”. Rust describes his style as “traditional, wild, robust, but with absolute refinement”. It is inspired by his many travels and he likes to mix the products from different countries on one plate.

Thirty years ago next year, Dominique van de Bovenkamp began her career at the reception at the Hotel Pulitzer. Besides the normal desk job, she was - as a genuinely caring person - doing her utmost to make the impossible possible for the guests. The most memorable time was when she was asked to organize a Jewish marriage ceremony in the synagogue for a couple who were very fond of the Netherlands and got engaged in Amsterdam. After a year she received the birth announcement; you become part of the family. A few years later, when the concierge desk was set up, Dominique switched to concierge and became the first female concierge in Amsterdam and at the Golden Keys.
