Message of support from the Executive Mayor of Cape Town Each year, the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival delivered by Turkish Airlines delivers world class comic relief to Cape Town audiences.
Executive Mayor PATRICIA DE LILLE
Events such as the Funny Festival adds pure Cape Town flare to our dynamic annual events calendar but also promotes the inclusive city as people from all over the city come together to enjoy laughter and our love for comedy.
We are also proud of what the Cape Town Funny Festival has achieved over the years by recognising young talent and bringing them to audiences to launch young comedian's careers. This brings a great balance to the line-up with our established and much-loved comedians along with international acts. Over the years, we have seen amazing talent on these stages and we look forward to an amazing show this year again. I wish the organisers well with this year's festival and our comedians as they bring us our annual mid-year comedy relief.

Welcome Welcome to the 12th edition of the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival delivered by Turkish Airlines. Your continued support has ensured this project’s longevity, for which I thank you. Without patient and generous sponsors, the Festival would be a non-starter. Jive, Turkish Airlines, the City of Cape Town, the New Kings Hotel, the Cape Argus and Heart FM must be commended for their ongoing support. The performers showcased are at the top of their respective fields. Alan Committie and Marc Lottering rate as the best in South Africa whilst, Glen Biderman-Pam, Yaaseen Barnes and Justin-Ray Stoffels are on the way up the comedy ladder. They are bright lights on the comedy landscape. Specialty variety acts like The Big Boys, Gino Fabbri, Ennio Marchetto and Kev Orkian will keep you enthralled. All are respected leaders in their genres. Carl Wastie’s audience antics have become a feature of the Festival. Festival Director EDDY CASSAR
It is no secret that I have a strong interest in variety, cabaret and circus acts and their amalgamation into the show, I believe, is our unique selling point. It makes us different to any other comedy show on the market. It is a rare thrill for me to meet audience members who reminisce of past acts and festivals. I have met a few “funny festival fanatics” who have religiously attended every Funny Festival we have produced. The amazing audience this project attracts is a topic of discussion with international artists on all my overseas trips. Apparently, our laughter and heart-warming reception is refreshing and rare in the industry. We are “not jaded” is the term they use. Past international acts are possibly our best adverts abroad. The hospitality and adventure our Funny Festival partners offer has become legendary. Our overnight visit to the Aquila Private Game Reserve, long lunches in the Paarl and Wellington farmlands, group trips on the City Sightseeing red bus, the amazing hospitality of the staff at the New Kings Hotel and the freedom of movement VW/Audi Claremont offer our performers make the Cape Town Funny Festival a blue chip project and an attraction for international performers. Add the hospitality and beauty of Cape Town and we have a winning combination. At the end of the day, the show is dead in the water without an audience. Your enthusiasm has made this project the success it has become, for which I am humbled. Thank you. Enjoy the show.

ALAN COMMITTIE - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @alancommittie Alan Committie is one of South Africa’s leading standup comics, character comedians, award winning actor, comedy writer, theatre director and Master of Ceremonies. His wealth of talent makes him a true comedy genius and a wealth of comedy information. He is renowned for his one man shows and his 950 plus performances in Defending the Cavemen. His most recent production, Love Factually, played to full houses both in Johannesburg and Cape Town. He returns to the Theatre on the Bay with his own comedy show at the end of the year. Alan is a born and bred Capetonian and was a school teacher in another life. On the Cape Town Funny Festival, Alan is the genius master of ceremony, who holds the show together.
GLEN BIDERMAN-PAM - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @GlenBidermanPam Glen Biderman-Pam is a stand-up comedian, actor and director. Glen graduated from UCT with an honours degree in Theatre and Performance. Soon after, he landed a major role in Anthony Akerman’s Somewhere on the Border which played at the Baxter Theatre. The show travelled to Johannesburg which is where Glen began his stand-up career. After a short stint of open spots, he won the Comedy Central Open Mic Competition which launched him onto a stage with his childhood hero Barry Hilton. Since making his professional debut in 2013, Glen has appeared as a comedian on Comedy Central on multiple occasions, as well as SABC 2’s Late Nite Talk Show, Bantu Hour. He has been nominated twice for the Savanna Comics Choice Awards. He has performed internationally at the Perth Fringe World Festival. Locally, he performs regularly all over Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Glen was recently in the smash-hit sold-out show Bad Jews which ran in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
CARL WASTIE - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @carlwastie Carl is a natural entertainer, MC as well as a Radio & TV presenter, appearing on Good Hope FM, SABC 2’s Hectic Nine 9, SABC 3’s Expresso Morning Show and on Sony Max’s Sucker Punch. He has been a Funny Fest Fixture for 6 years now and was part of the inaugural London edition of the Fest donning everything from a Bikini to a “KAAL” suit and even a Dress. This year is no different and like his stature, his appearance will be short and sweet but without a doubt, memorable. He is an audience participation tonic designed to get you involved in the laughter. There are little things Carl won’t do to get a laugh, but that’s mostly because we are paying him! Good Luck if you’re in the front row!
GINO FABBRI - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @ginofab Gino Fabbri is an extraordinarily talented comedian and impersonator who performs a selection of very likable and hilarious characters who have made him a hugely popular and sought after entertainer. He has developed a portfolio of twenty different personas which he incorporates into his shows. His stand alone shows are the work of a genius. Gino often performs with fellow singer, actress and comedian Donna Africa. In this duo format, some of the characters play off each other and the entertainment develops into a sophisticated and high impact cabaret show. Integrated into his act are a number of unique show-stopping speciality acts which create wow moments between his comedy characters, including his Evolution of Dance in which he performs 50 dance styles in seven minutes, and the Evolution of Drums in which he plays the greatest and most recognisable drum riffs, to great acclaim. “I started out as a drummer, so music has always been a big part of my show because it gets people up and jumping.... boing boing .. nice! My aim is to entertain and leave exhausted - I always had a flair for accents and thus I use everyday characters .. people we all know and love... and I squeeze their characters to make some laughy laughs. The characters try to hide their inner thoughts and fears... but all their inadequacies are indeed plain for all to see! Energy and laughter, mayhem and lakka fun!” Gino resides in Port Elizabeth, travels the country and is married with two wonderful sons. He also has a couple of chickens and is seri-aaasss about coffee!

MARC LOTTERING - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @marclottering Capetonian Marc Lottering is one of South Africa’s top comedians. He has been in the funny business for seventeen years and continues to keep audiences in stitches across the country. Marc has extensive experience in both television and theatre. When he is not performing he entertains home-sick South African’s across the globe. He has written sixteen one-man shows for the stage. Marc is the recipient of several prestigious awards along the way and continues to play to full houses everywhere he performs. Marc Lottering Returns to the Baxter Theatre in November this year, with his 2016 hit show HASH TAG LOTTERING!
THE BIG BOYS - SOUTH AFRICA FULL FESTIVAL @ashsearle @Brad_Searle Ash and Brad Searle AKA the Big Boys have established cult status for their physical comedy dance shows. These two genuine brothers from Pretoria have combined their musical theatre history, their agile dance and acrobatic skills and their very natural comedic demeanour to create a genre of their own. The shows are extremely popular and trendy for high school learners, and have been an integral part of changing the way the male youth view dance. They have been performing together for 7 years all over South Africa, and in Australia and the UK. Currently the boys are performing the third instalment of the multi award winning Big Boys trilogy in South Africa, and are looking forward to bringing their flair to the Funny Festival in Cape Town in a slightly different format. When the boys are not burning up the floor on stage they can be found next to a braai, brandy and coke in hand, watching the rugby. Just two normal South African okes.

ENNIO MARCHETTO - ITALY 21 July to 7 August @EnnioMarchetto Ennio was born in 1960 the beautiful city of Venice and was inspired by the Disney cartoons he watched in his childhood, the modern choreography of Pina Bausch and growing up amidst the Venetian Carnival, Ennio daydreamed himself into flights of fancy with visions of Marilyn Monroe dressed in white paper. At the beginning of the 1980s Ennio used to make extravagant costumes and masks for the reemerging Carnival. His dream became reality with the creation of his first cabaret show winning him the prestigious Golden Lion Award, at the Venetian Entertainment Festival and The Golden Mosquito award for comedy. When he met his collaborative partner Sosthen Hennekam, a fashion and costume designer, they developed enough paper characters to create a full one-hour show. A year later he was invited to perform at The Edinburgh Festival. He quickly became a cult hit and achieved massive critical acclaims. After that, Ennio appeared at the first European MTV Music Awards in Berlin, together with big stars of that time such as Prince, George Michael and Bjork. Ennio also performed with The Spice Girls, Brian Adams and other artists for HRH Prince Charles at the Royal Variety Show on the BBC. Ennio has performed in over 70 countries worldwide. His side‐splitting performances of our best-loved celebrities and his adaptability to different cultures has brought his show to royal and celebrity attention giving Ennio a huge following and a massive international fan base.

JUSTIN-RAY STOFFELS - SOUTH AFRICA 11 - 23 JULY Justin-Ray Stoffels is a stand-up comedian from Greyton in the Overberg Area who moved to Mitchell’s Plain after finishing High School at EmilWeder in Genadendal. He is currently making his rounds on the local Cape Town Comedy Scene. The farm boy jokes about his country characteristics, relationships with women and observation about his race and ethnicity. He is inspired by comedians like Richard Pryor, Louis CK, Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock. Justin-ray Stoffels has gone from playing Cape Town’s local bars to the Lyric Theatre, opening for Nik Rabinowitz and Top 5 in the Comedy Central Grab a Mic Competition. Justin-ray’s sense of humour has been described as “crazy, weird and wonderful”. This is his first appearance on the Cape Town Funny Festival.
YAASEEN BARNES - SOUTH AFRICA 11 - 23 July @Ya_a_seen_Him After winning the 2014 Laughmaster competition, Yaaseen was showcased on his first Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. He quickly went on to perform on Comedy Central’s religious themed show “Divine”. His one-liner styled comedy has become a hit with South Africans. Last year Yaaseen won the coveted Newcomer of the Year award at the South African Comics Choice Awards. Soon afterwards he started touring the country with Riaad Moosa, which proved as wonderful way of telling South Africa that there was another Muslim comic on the rise and that not all of them are doctors! Off stage Yaaseen has been invited to join writing teams across the country creating content for Stuart Taylor’s stage productions, Riaad Moosa’s sketch show and for the Emmy nominated ZA News. He has also toured nationally with Islamic Relief. Yaaseen’s one-liner style of comedy relies on a short setup and a strong punchline. He is a man of a few words on stage which he presents in dead-pan fashion, usually delivered with an expressionless face and little movement. Dead pan comedy is often referred to as “dad jokes” because the cringe factor is so high! This Athlone raised boytjie is glad to perform on the Funny Festival again, as he is most happy performing in Cape Town to Capetonians!
