4 stargazing spots in cape town

The sky is at its best on crisp, clear winter nights when there’s no humidity in the air. So now, with the turning of seasons and earlier sunsets, you have a good chance to explore the marvel of the Southern Hemisphere night sky. Remember: - When the moon is full, there’s so much light that it washes out everything else. Pick moonless nights or be out before the moon rise. - Google Sky Map is basically Google Maps, but for space. Its data is pulled from a wide range of sources, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Hubble Space Telescope and NASA’s Chandra satellite. Signal Hill Although located in the heart of the city. Its elevated position above city buildings and light pollution, the lack of street lights and passing traffic, makes this location a great spot to explore and soak in the night sky. The many viral night images taken form Signal Hill in recent years are the best evident to support this spot. Llandudno, a seaside suburb of Cape Town is located in a secluded bay on the slop of the Atlantic Seaboard, off the road to Hout Bay. There are no street lights, shops or commercial activities, making it another accessible stargazing area. If you are looking to combine the star gazing with an elegant evening outing, the 12 Apostles hotel, mid-way between Camps Bay and Hout Bay is just what you are looking for. Beneath towering mountains and above the ocean, with no other civilised structure for kilometers around, this 5-Star hotel is a one of a kind experience. Drinks on the terrace or full candle light dinners are regular to their menu. If, by any chance, you are in the Cape Winelands overnight, the Afrikaans Taalmonument above Paarl is a known stargazing location among locals. It is a much known spot and when circumstances allow, the local Orion Observation Group hosts a tutored night, sharing their knowledge and telescopes.

Nestled at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills in Cape Town, De Grendel is located only 20 minutes from Cape Town CBD and Cape Town International Airport. The slopes of the Tygerberg, which face the setting sun, offer cooling breezes off the cold Antarctic Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean only 7 kilometres away. Winemaking at De Grendel is a careful balance between science and art. The meticulous care of the vineyards allows the grapes to express the environment in which they are grown and their distinctive varietal character. Careful harvesting and gentle handling in the cellar, combined with the wine maker’s passionate practice of their craft, carry the wines throughout the journey from fruit to wine.

Wine Tasting

The Restaurant

The views of Table Mountain and Cape Town from the long glass encased De Grendel Tasting Lounge and Stoep are possibly the most spectacular of any wine farm in the Cape. Look out over the vineyards to the magnificent view of Table Mountain, Cape Town city and the Atlantic Ocean, or relax in the comfortable lounge atmosphere.

As a family farm De Grendel Restaurant’s philosophy extends to sourcing all ingredients locally, from only the best suppliers. customized art fair Galleries and artists in Cape Town, South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa prepared themselves for this year’s Cape Town Art Fair. The fair, on the other hand, had to be postponed for next year to align with international travel bans. Nevertheless, some of what we missed in the annual art blitz, is available and on show in galleries across the city and some can also be viewed online. Galleries mentioned in this article form part of the local First-Thursday initiative which keeps establishments open for longer on the first Thursday of every month, turning Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD) to an art hive for an evening. Deepest Darkest is a boutique contemporary gallery in the historical heritage village of De Waterkant curating emerging and established local and international contemporary artists and creators working across a variety of practices. Deepest Darkest presents its first show of 2021, Nocturnes, a solo exhibition of paintings by John-Michael Metelerkamp. Metelerkamp who was born and raised in Knysna, recently relocated to Cape Town, with Nocturnes being his first solo exhibition in the city following multiple exhibitions across the country as well as presentations at numerous art fairs. Painted between 2018 to 2020, Metelerkamp’s Nocturnes is a collection of paintings inspired by the artist’s life in Knysna. Jaffer Modern is a new gallery located on the penultimate floor of the recently completed Vīb Hotel in Green Point. Sahlah Davids, Abdus Salaam and Aimee Messinger present ‘Tell me 3 things about yourself’. Curated by Sara Khan, the exhibition presents the artists as three elements, three intervals of introspection and retrospection, three moments of pause and three invitations to dialogue and debate. You are invited to consider this prevalent question, “Tell me 3 things about yourself”. A question that often accommodates as an icebreaker for incipient friends and connections. During a juncture when the familiar in the proverbial sense has become distorted, the artists are offering a halcyon escape from the disruption, to take a peregrination between oneself, another and beyond. THK is a contemporary art gallery, showcasing work by local artists currently exhibiting Andrew Kayser ‘Not Enough Time to Do Nothing’. EBONY/CURATED exhibits contemporary and modern art from the continent. The gallery represents a core group of emerging and established artists and participates in fairs internationally. First exhibition of 2021 in Loop Street focuses on new artworks by 11 exceptional artists. Many of the artists in this Summer Exhibition would normally have been included in booths at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, usually scheduled to take place around mid-February. Whilst most Art Fairs have been delayed until later in 2021, artists keep creating and still need opportunities to exhibit to a physical audience as much as possible. ‘In [the] Loop’ will include, amongst others, Kelechi Nwaneri’s ‘The Journey’. Artsy highlighted Kelechi in November 2020 as one of 15 artists “on the rise” from the continent. They will also be showing pieces by John Newdigate and Zemba Luzamba, both of whom have achieved notable auction records for contemporary artists on the continent in the past 6 months. Aviwe Plaatjie’s magnificent ‘Sithi Aba’ is a precursor to his highly anticipated solo exhibition at EBONY/CURATED in May 2021. They also released a new embroidered panel entitled ‘Solitude III’ by Kimathi Mafafo, another artist recently highlighted by Artsy in “Trends to Watch” in 2021. Following a sold-out solo exhibition in 2020 and recent exhibits in Paris and Munich, Hugh Byrne gives us ‘Fluster’ – another radical experiment in painting, highlighting the artist’s continued investigation into structure and colour. The A4 Arts Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the arts in Southern Africa. A4 is grounded by an understanding of art as a reciprocal resource, a catalyst for innovation, and a medium of collectivity. A4 Circle Series invites an emerging artist to work with an emerging curator, and stage an exhibition in A4’s library. The library as a site plays a pivotal role in the staging of the work. WORLDART is a vibrant Cape Town based gallery that specialises in contemporary art with a leaning towards urban and pop art. ‘What keeps me up at night’ is an exhibition of paintings by nineteen year old Jozua Gerrard, an art school drop-out with will and drive. “I wanna be something big, I want to be one of the greats”. Gerrard says that he was ten when he started realising that it was possible to make a living off being a creative. As he grew up he began to struggle more and more with his mental health and art became an escape. “I could pour out all of the feelings which I didn’t have the vocabulary to express, into these creations and it just gave me a new perspective on self-worth.” Masked figures in minimalist settings form the bulk of this body of work. Though it pays homage to the presence of masks in some native cultures, it also refers to the idea that the mask transforms the wearer into something more than themselves. Its aura can be so overwhelming that the wearer will hide behind it in times of weakness, sometimes helping the wearer to have the edge to push through difficult situations they face.

“My art is made to connect the viewer with themselves just a little bit more than they would have if they hadn’t seen it.” Nel Gallery is centrally located on the corner of Long and Church Streets in Cape Town. It is owned and directed by artist Luan Nel alongside his partner and spouse Neil Pendock. The gallery usually has an ongoing group hang of mostly local artists, but also artists from the rest of the country and further afield. In addition to the group hang they host solo and two-person exhibitions at regular intervals throughout the year. With an increasing focus on African Art around the world, Eclectica Contemporary aims to present a carefully selected and focused collection of art from the continent that interrogates the issues facing us in a globalised world. The art at Eclectica often shows practices and materials familiar from art history but which push these boundaries and explore uncharted territories of representation, technique and theory.

HOUT BAY’S BEAUTY FROM A FRESH PERSPECTIVE The Lookout Deck Hout Bay arguably boasts one of the best views in the Western Cape. Situated on the water’s edge in the Hout Bay harbour, the restaurant boasts breath taking mountain and ocean views.

Program of exhibitions shows a mix of solo shows by gallery artists alongside curated group shows. In addition, the Eclectica Contemporary exhibition space has facilities for experimental, new media and project-based works. Youngblood is a three-story gallery based in the heart of the CBD. Youngblood’s main focus is to provide a platform for up and coming artists to start off and continue from. The Cape Gallery, 60 Church Street is set in the heart of the old city off the Church Street walking mall, flanked by the colourful Georgian and Dutch facades built by the 18th and 19th century settlers. Central to the tradition of South African painting is the abiding love of the land. Early Cape painters were ‘reporters’ who described the topography, flora and fauna of this fascinating land, a conservative approach which is still favoured by the gallery’s clients today. Recently the emergence of the vibrant street art has added an essentially African character to the work on display.

a grande day

Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in the Franschhoek wine valley is a firm sought out destination by local and travellers that have seen and visited a place or two. Grande Provence Wine Estate wears her 325-year history with dignity. Nestled in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley in South Africa’s Western Cape, her lush vines spread across 47 acres. Rolling vistas frame the valley floor and heighten the drama of the rugged mountains beyond. Barely a one-hour drive from Cape Town, this is heartland South African Wine Country at its very finest. When purchased in 2004 by its current owner, both the interior and landscape designers, were focused on enhancing the grandeur of the property. Attention to details, perspective and a mix of public and private spaces of different size keeps the visitor enchanted throughout the visit. Outdoor spaces around the estate are a combination of shade and sunny, all dotted with large scale sculptures which in turn are part of the gallery. The gallery specialises in contemporary work by the finest artists in the country over a variety of media but is especially renowned for the superb quality of its sculpture. There is an annex which sells smaller works, decorative objects and some carefully selected African Artefacts. Foodies will be thrilled by the range of offers. The deli, open 7 days a week, serves breakfast and lunch made of local

delicacies and favourites. A large selection of fresh, baked and pantry goods are offered on the shelves, to stock for the days ahead. The deli is also the source for the estate’s luscious picnic baskets. A favourite among families and groups of friends, and perfectly suited to align with safety protocols of recent times. Sitting on the lawns or at a table in the gardens will allow remote indulgence.

The Restaurant at Grande Provence is currently open only over the weekends. They offer a 3-course menu with or without wine pairing. On other days, groups larger than 15 people may book the restaurant exclusively. The restaurant shares its space with the wine tasting area. The bar dominates the centre of the room – striking in galvanised steel with black strapping. A touch of fun is evident with the tractor seat bar stools.

4 wine experiences and 3 sets of pairings gives wine connoisseurs and first timers a great selection of the estate’s products. Bacchus would have been proud. Wine, deli products and pairing home kits are couriered both nationally and internationally, giving you the chance to carry their flavours to your home and family. Other experiences available for visitors and groups include wine blending, group cellar tours and special lunches or dinners.

While a full day spent at Grande Provence is more than reasonable, you can choose a selective version when hopping off the Franschhoek Wine Tram. The estate is part of the Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Pink and Grey lines. All walk-ins are welcome but if you wish to enjoy a picnic, an advanced booking of at least 24 hours is required. With its proximity to Franschhoek Village, and being located in the center of the valley, an overnight stay at one of the estate suites will position you perfectly to leverage on all the valley as to offer. It is winelands elegance at its best. Hello Cape Town April 2021 l

family connect Netcare launches Family Connect Line to keep COVID-19 patients and their loved ones connected Dedicated personnel deployed to enhance communication between patients and families In mid-January 2021 Netcare launched a dedicated support line to keep next-of-kin informed on the status of their loved ones who have been hospitalised with COVID-19 and, where possible, to facilitate direct communication between patients and their families. This is in line with the healthcare group’s focus on placing each patient in hospital and their loved ones at the centre of the care provided to them. “The significant surge in people with COVID-19 infections requiring hospitalisation has forced us to focus our attention primarily on optimising our clinical resources to provide the best and safest care possible for all patients,” says Dr Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of Netcare. Unfortunately, as a result of the strain on our resources, communication with patients’ loved ones has at times been affected. “We understand that the hospitalisation of a loved one can be very stressful and anxiety provoking for the next-of-kin, especially during this time when, in order to mitigate the risk of the virus spreading in our hospitals, visitation has been suspended other than in exceptional cases. “As a result and in an effort to improve communication, we have set up the Netcare Family Connect Line. This makes it possible for families to engage with dedicated personnel, mainly social workers who we deployed for this purpose, for information on the status of their loved ones admitted with COVID-19 to any of our Netcare hospitals countrywide, whilst enabling us to maintain patient confidentiality,” Dr Friedland explained. “We understand how crucial it is for families to know how their loved ones in our care are doing, and this new service is dedicated to fulfilling this need,” Dr Friedland says. The number for the Netcare Family Connect Line is 0800 111 266. It will be operational weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 08:00 to 17:00. The Netcare Family Connect Line service enables patients’ next-of-kin to connect with one of our team of trained call centre professionals, who will facilitate the feedback process. A dedicated Netcare representative at the hospital where the patient is cared for will obtain information on the patient’s status, and will personally phone the family member to provide feedback. Messages to and from the family and patient will also be relayed where direct communication between the family and patient is not possible. Feedback will be provided within hours of the first enquiry and thereafter on a daily basis. Netcare has, since the start of the month, already recruited and deployed 30 social workers to support patients and their families in non-clinical patient liaison roles, which enables healthcare workers to focus solely on their clinical and nursing duties. Netcare hospitals are in the process of expanding the number of social workers to ensure that their services will continue over weekends too. “Already, we are seeing the profound value that the social workers’ efforts have brought for families through facilitating better communication in these unprecedented times, and we believe that this telephonic support service will enhance connection between patients and their loved ones even further.” How the Netcare Family Connect Line works To ensure that loved ones stay connected to patients admitted to Netcare hospitals with COVID-19, Netcare has established a national Family Connect Line, with dedicated Netcare personnel deployed as liaison between patients and their next-of-kin.

Here’s how to use the line: • Phone 0800 111 266 during the Netcare Family Connect Line’s operating hours: Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, 08:00 to 17:00. • Provide the call centre professional with the patient’s case number, which will enable them to immediately identify the patient and the hospital where he or she is being cared for, as well as with your name and surname. This case number is sent via sms to patients admitted to hospital as from Monday, 18 January 2021 as well as to those listed as their next-of-kin.

l Hello Cape Town April 2021

• Should you not have the patient’s case number, we will require the following information: - Patient’s name and surname - Patient’s ID number - Hospital where the patient is being cared for - Date of the patient’s admission - Your name and surname • The call centre professional will relay your enquiry to a dedicated Netcare representative – either a social worker or patient liaison officer – at the hospital where the patient is cared for, who will confirm with the patient that we may disclose information on their status to you. • The dedicated Netcare representative will contact you telephonically within hours, with information on your loved one’s status. In cases where the representative cannot facilitate direct contact between the patient and family, they will also relay any messages to and from the patient and family, and will continue to update you on the patient’s status on a daily basis during their hospital stay.
