JAMES BLUNT LIVE IN CAPE TOWN

Date : 25 August 2011 - 31 August 2011 Time : 09h00 - 17h00 Price : R 5.00 - R 30.00 R30 per adult, R25 per pensioner and R5 per child Last year our wild flowers taught us yet another lesson: never take the wild flowers for granted! Mother Nature alone decides when and where each species will bloom. Predicting flowers remains an exciting challenge, hence the Flower People of Namaqualand and the Olifants River, cannot forecast accurately what and where the flowers are going to be during Spring 2011. You may or may not see fields of orange daisies, but we can guarantee that you will always be able to see most species at the Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why Clanwilliam has become world renowned for its wild flower show and many visitors comment that it is superior to the Chelsea Show! Why? Because even during years of very little rain, visitors will be ensured of a magnificent display of wild flowers, not only at the Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show, but also at the Ramskop Wild Flower Garden. The Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show takes place amidst the exceptional ambience created by the Neo- Gothic architecture of the N.G. Kerk building and illustrates the natural beauty of the region through reconstructed landscapes featuring the plants and wild flowers from the Clanwilliam area. Clanwilliam has the largest variety of wild flowers in one district in the world due to the vastly differing topography of the area which sees a dry and arid Karoo environment merging with the marshlands found at the foot of the Cederberg and Pakhuis mountains. Over 400 species from 40 different plant families are displayed at the Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show every year, many of them growing nowhere else in the world. These wild flower wonders include Geel Perdekop, Sneeupro-

ART & CULTURE ZAPIRO: Jiving with Madiba,

Jonathan Shapiro’s Mandela has just opened at the South African Jewish Museum Cape Town’s Company’s Garden. Not just another tribute to Nelson Mandela, this exhibition, the largest ever of Zapiro’s work, celebrates the life and contributions of South Africa’s greatest citizen, his struggle, successes and shortcomings, as portrayed by our country’s leading political cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro. With over 130 of Jonathan Shapiro’s cartoons on display, Zapiro: Jiving with Madiba traces the life of Nelson Mandela from Prisoner to President to Pensioner. “This exhibition is truly an inspiring romp through the first two decades of the New South Africa, as serialised in our media, by our greatest cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro” says Andrew Goldman, the Jewish Museum’s Director. “It is not possible to leave untouched by the contributions of Mandela and Shapiro, endowed with very different talents and yet both hugely influential in the shaping of the New South Africa.” Zapiro: Jiving with Madiba is being widely hailed as the “greatest exhibit of cartoons in the history of South Africa.” Art Times calls the Jewish Museum’s exhibition of this

“iconoclastic collection...visually stunning and historically significant.” Jonathan Shapiro says, “I have never seen an exhibition in this country put together with this level of care and finesse. I am blown away!” In addition to the Zapiro cartoons that everyone loves, Shapiro’s struggle era work for the UDF and ANC are also on display, as are dozens of Zapiro’s original sketchbooks and sketches for a 70th birthday card Zapiro made for Madiba while both were being detained at Pollsmoore Prison. Truly interactive, the exhibit incorporates multiple touch screens, a Zoetrope animation and kids’ activities. Don’t forget to bring your camera, you will definitely want to be photographed with the original Madiba puppet from ZA News! “The references that drive so much of Zapiro’s world are diverse. From politics and news horror to Dr. Suess and Tintin.Zapiro’s world is really fantastic in this way,” says curator Roger van Wyk. “He operates between the most pressing and pivotal issues of the day using often frivolous, playful visual references.” These are just some of the elements that make this exhibition truly captivating. This is truly an exhibit you should not miss.

Japanese Art More than fifty years ago, Isaac Kaplan began collecting netsuke – miniature ceremonial Japanese carvings, which were worn by the newly affluent merchant classes during the time of the Samurai. He was to develop this collection into one of the largest and most noted worldwide. Works on display were created from the 17th through to the 19th century, by several of Japan’s leading artists. The exhibition comprises some 200 objects, outstanding pieces selected from the 600 in the collection. From individual netsuke carved in ivory, stag horn and wood, to ceremonial pipes and sword fittings created in precious metals, the exhibition traces the acquisitions and growing sophistication of the collector over a period of thirty years.

Both exhibitions are taking place at The South African Jewish Museum.

The museum was officially opened by Nelson Mandela in December 2000. The brainchild of Mendel Kaplan, the museum's founder and one of the benefactors, the project took about four years from planning to completion. Set in the heart of the Company's Garden in Museum Mile, it is a major attraction for local and international tourism. The entrance to the museum is situated in the Old Synagogue, the first synagogue built in South Africa in 1863. This is linked to the new gallery by a bridge - the bridge between the old and the new - the gangplank to the shores of the Cape and the immigrants' new homeland. The Museum is interactive and hi-tech, using different media to present highlights of South African history, and transforming the Jewish community's story into a vital account of individual and organisational roles and contributions. Dynamic displays reveal the community's response to the moral and political challenges that confronted them. On view are rare Judaicaartifacts, animated video footage of the famous Barney Barnato and Max Rose, and an award winning documentary film 'Nelson Mandela. A Righteous Man', which is screened throughout the day. In line with the hi-tech format of the museum, visitors are able to view the collection on two touch screens, where they are able to access comprehensive information on the art in the collection and the exhibition itself. Audio guides on the exhibition are also available. .

WHAT WINE ROUTE? Not sure where to go for a wine route adventure? It all depends on how much time you have and how much of day - or week - you’d like to make of it. For those with very little time, you’ll be happy to know that Cape Town’s CBD presents a host of wine bars that will guide you through a virtual wine tasting of practically any estate you choose. But for those who do have some time...

Stellenbosch Wine Route

Franschhoek Wine Route

Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The five wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685 .

The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes 148 cellars - most of which are open to the public. From Cape Town take the N1 in a northerly direction and turn off at the Exit 39 onto the R304 and follow through into Stellenbosch. Franschhoek was founded over 300 years ago when the French Huguenots settled in the Berg River Valley. The wine route here is comparatively small with only 29 cellars, but what it lacks in wine route variety, it makes up for in quality cuisine and breathtaking scenery. A perfect mini-break destination. Franschhoek is 85km outside of Cape Town.

TOURISM NEWS Vindaba to boost SA wine tourism As South Africa works towards positioning itself as one of the world’s top 20 travel destinations by 2020, the local wine and tourism industry are uniting to present the country’s first specialist wine tourism exhibition, Vindaba. With the backing of national and provincial government, Vindaba will be showcasing the best in South African wine-related tourism when it is held in Cape Town in September 2012, targeting the local and international travel trade as well as wine, travel and lifestyle media. Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk has identified wine tourism as one of the fastest-growing and most lucrative sectors of the global tourism market. Vindaba, which marks a new spirit of collaboration among tourism bodies, is intended as a launching pad to position South Africa on the world map of wine tourism.

Strategy to grow wine tourism Forming part of a long-term strategy to grow wine tourism, the initiative represents a partnership between Wines of South Africa (Wosa) and South African Tourism, as well as the Wine Routes, Cape Town Tourism, Cape Town Routes Unlimited and the Western Cape Department of Finance, Tourism and Economic Development. According to South African Tourism’s global manager for events, SugenPillay, wine tourism is an important part of South Africa’s leisure offering to travellers, and the wine industry should be supported by the tourism industry. “South Africa offers a diverse and exciting range of tourism experiences,” says Pillay. “The Winelands bring a further degree of competitiveness to our industry. At the same time, local and international tourism can help to augment the revenue streams of the wine sector.” The organisers plan to turn Vindaba into a worldclass event that will assume the status of a leading wine exhibition among the international wine and travel fraternities. It will also offer specialist seminars, focus on gastro-tourism, and provide tailormade wine tours for the international and domestic travel business fraternity.

and sommeliers in important export markets. It also attracts wine, travel and lifestyle media. Cape Wine is considered the most successful international wine trade show in the Southern Hemisphere, and has been held every alternate year since 2000 with the exception of last year, given South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Next year’s Cape Wine will be the first in four years and will thus provide an important opportunity for the industry to update its markets on new developments. It is expected that some 320 wineries will exhibit. “There is a natural synergy between Cape Wine and Vindaba,” says WOSA CEO Su Birch, who has been one of the prime drivers to establish a coherent strategy to promote wine tourism involving decision makers from the wider tourism sector.

A first for wine, tourism cooperation “As far as we know, this is the first initiative of its kind anywhere in the wine-producing world in which the wine and tourism sectors are jointly presenting a wine and wine tourism event,” says Birch. “Not only will the two exhibitions feature many of the same producers, but there are other common links. South Africa has been steadily building a domestic and global awareness for the range and excellence of its wines and is now considered a significant wine-producing country. “With provenance playing such a strategic role in wine marketing, it makes sense to advance winerelated tourism, so wine lovers are actively encouraged to visit the source of the products they enjoy.” Birch believes wine tourism, which began in 1971 with the launching of the first wine route in Stellenbosch, also has the potential to create more jobs. The wine industry in its entirety currently provides employment for 275 000 South Africans.

Eco-friendly exhibitions In another world first, both events will be staged as eco-friendly exhibitions, making use exclusively of recycled and recyclable materials. South Africa is already recognised as a world leader in eco-sustainable wine production. Now it plans to establish a similar reputation for wine tourism by marketing Vindaba as a “green” initiative. Van Schalkwyk has identified South Africa’s wine tourism as central to marketing the country as an attractive long-haul destination. Speaking at a tourism stakeholder workshop in April, he said: “Wine tourism is a vital product offering in South Africa’s tourism product as it helps improve the country’s competitiveness against destinations like Brazil, Australia, Kenya and Thailand.” Although Australia has a highly developed wine tourism industry, many of its wine regions are located far apart, unlike South Africa where production is concentrated mostly in the Western Cape. Van Schalkwyk said travel and tourism’s contribution to global GDP was expected to grow this year, despite the fragile world economy, and was projected to reach US$5 990-billion, while providing 258-million jobs worldwide. The South African wine industry has an estimated annual turnover of R22-billion, with exports contributing R7-billion and wine tourism a further R5-billion. Van Schalkwyk said that, with emerging countries becoming more popular travel destinations than their developed counterparts, South Africa was well placed to promote its tourism offerings. At the same time, the country could capitalise on the world’s steadily growing emergent middle class. In Africa alone, the middle class has grown to around 300-million people, according to the African Development Bank. SAinfo reporter and Wines of South Africa

Cape Wine 2012 Although conceived as a stand-alone event, it will be staged simultaneously with Cape Wine 2012 at the Cape Town Convention Centre. Cape Wine, hosted biennially by Wosa, exhibits a wide spectrum of South Africa’s wines and wine styles to the international wine trade, from buyers to importers

It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The facade facing on Darling Street has a central feature surmounted by a pediment rising 82 feet above pavement level, the wings on either side are about 60ft in imposing clock tower houses the four-sided City Hall clock built to scale and half the size of London’s Big Ben. The building is divided longitudinally, with one half of the building housing the Grand Hall and reception rooms while the portion originally housing Municipal offices and which fronts onto Darling Street is the home of the Central Library of Cape Town.A stone set into the base of the building in front of the main balcony has this inscription: “upon release from prison on 11 February 1990 and on his election as President of South Africa on 9 May 1994 Nelson Mandela addressed the nation here”. One of the most unique places in the world - a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. We leave from Simon’s Town Waterfront and paddle past the civilian and Naval Harbour and out to Boulder’s Beach. After visiting the penguins we stop on a lovely semi-private beach for refreshments, swimming and snorkelling (we provide the snorkels and bottled drinking water.) Our double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience. By far our most popular trip. During the whale season from August to October there is a good chance of seeing whales as well. Read an article about seeing whales when paddling here.
