PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT

A journey back to a time where it all began.

Get ready for the musical journey of your life! Based on the Oscar-winning hit movie, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT is the heart-warming, uplifting story of three drag artists who hop aboard a battered old bus named Priscilla, searching for love and friendship. They end up on a journey of self-discovery and the road trip of a lifetime. This wildly fresh and funny adult musical with its multi-talented all South African cast features a hit parade of dance-floor favourites.

Masterfully directed and choreographed by award winning Themba Mbuli, the dance takes on several dispositions, from a sensitive gestural trance-like beginning, building to a relentless frenzy of passion and purpose.

Age Restriction: This musical contains some strong language and adult themes, parental guidance strongly recommended (minimum PG12). Artscape Theatre, 26 Mar - 23 Apr, Tickets R200 - R500. from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi TRIAL BY JURY Trial by Jury satirises the procedure in an average breach of promise, and also the insincerity which may sometimes underlie the pose of “respectability.” Everything done or sung is ludicrous, and yet beneath it all lies a recognisable substratum of truth. The resonating filmic score by international award winning composer Phil Thurston is influenced by indigenous rituals and interpreted with organic and dynamic sounds from the past. Artscape Theatre, 19 - 22 April, Tickets R100 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION Galactia, an impossibly transgressive artist, is commissioned by the Venetian republic to create a painting celebrating the triumph of Venice at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. What emerges in her uncompromising pursuit of truth, is the ugliness of slaughter. Galactia herself is brilliant, vain, arrogant

and politically naive. Will this most transgressive artist be co-opted by the state? This study of the relationship between the artist and the state is known to be British playwright Howard Barker’s most accessible and commercial play. It was first seen in South Africa at the Market Theatre in 1994 where it garnered multiple awards including the best director for Clare Stopford. Baxter Theatre, 30 Mar - 22 Apr, Tickets R130 - R160 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi TUMI OR NOT TUMI South African actress and leading comedienne Tumi Morake brings her first one-woman show on a national tour to Cape Town for two performances only. Well-known for starring in television sitcoms such as Izoso Connexion and Askies, this vivacious funny-lady has shared the stage with local comedy giants such as Marc Lottering, David Kau and Barry Hilton. Baxter Theatre, 31 Mar - 1 Apr, Tickets R150 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi HAMLET - PRINCE OF DENMARK The production takes its inspiration from one of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet, which took place during Shakespeare’s life-time. In 1608 off the east coast of South Africa, the crew of the East India Company merchant ship, the Red Dragon, performed Hamlet aboard the vessel while at anchor. In his log of 31 March 1608, Captain Keeling noted: “I invited Captain Hawkins to a fish dinner and had Hamlet acted

aboard me; which I permit to keep my people from idleness and unlawful games, or sleep.” This production re-imagines Shakespeare’s most iconic play within the context of the historic performance aboard the Red Dragon, as a play within a play within a play, utilizing a cast of only 6 actors playing 6 Jacobean sailors who, in turn, play all the parts in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Revolution and rage, asylum and stage – Peter Weiss’s play is simultaneously a historic philosophical reflection and a crazed theatrical spectacle. Theatre on the Bay, 12 - 29 April, Tickets R100 - R180 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi TARTUFFE Tartuffe by Molière – regarded as one of the greatest masters of comedy. Exploring the way in which people are easily manipulated by symbols of power and honeyed words, Tartuffe is one of Molière’s masterpieces, an uneasy comedy with a potent message at its core. Controversial when it was first performed in 1664, the play was closed down, censored and Molière questioned by the religious authorities of the time, who saw in it an audacious critique of hypocrisy within the church. Considering this, in a time when the artist, cartoonist or satirist’s freedom of expression was not guaranteed, Tartuffe is as relevant now as it was then. It is a play which, through the strength of its comedy and satire of society, also invites us to question and interrogate Baxter Theatre, 18 - 29 April, Tickets R140 - R160. from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi FUNNY GIRL – THE MUSICAL This international smash hit, semibiographical musical, based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedienne Fanny Brice features some of the most iconic songs in film and theatre history, including “People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”. This musical classic tells the fascinating and bitter-sweet story of Fanny Brice whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her rise from a Brooklyn music hall singer to Broadway star, and her tempestuous relationship with gambler Nick Arnstein. South Africa welcomes The Blue Man Group! This unprecedented theatrical success savours ongoing accolades, awards and has become part of the pop culture zeitgeist. Hello Cape Town had a moment to sit with Blue Man & Blue Man Captain, Meridian, and Antonio Aguirre, the Strings & Resident Musical Director! Here is a sneak peek into the life of a Blue Man: How did you all meet and how did the collaboration begin? M: The founders of the group met in college, the rest of us have joined over the years - last year was our 25th anniversary. We come from a variation of different backgrounds, different influences, trainings – some of us have theatre, some of us have music - we are a hodge podge collection of uniquely talented individuals. Why the ‘Blue Man’? T: In 1988/1989 they first exhibited the show at en event called: A funeral for the 80s. They basically were burning Rambo dolls and trying to say goodbye the materialistic ideologies of that time. They decided on the colour Blue as it resonated with the audience. The look and effect it has on changing a person’s features from a person like Meridian, into this other ‘being’. It’s really a special thing. M: The Blue face removes some of the superficial features of your face and having this blue faced creature makes it easier to connect that if we looked ourselves with the more human element. It’s a tool to help foster connections. How would you describe the show to a new-comer? T: The show is unlike anything you will ever see. It is truly an experience one shares when taking this journey with these Men. You get to see your own world through these characters’ eyes which lends to a totally different outlook. You’ll laugh until your cheeks hurt and leave the theatre feeling a lot lighter and with a new perspective. M: The show is very unique, energetic and exciting. The Blue Man Group is its own genre! You won’t know what to expect when you show up, you won’t know how to explain it to your friends once you’ve seen it, but you will drag them to the show so they might experience it themselves.

about, creating connections, the energy of celebrating life, joy and creativity together. If you can find that within yourself and bring it to the stage, you can be a Blue Man. And you must be 6ft. tall *chuckles* How do you prepare for your shows? M: We spend 1 1.5 hours ‘tuning up’ our energy. The bottom line being, if we can connect with each other, we can share it with the audience. Regarding our inspiration, it is the curiosity I touched on - we always look out into the world for ideas. Not to give too much away, but for example in our current show we have a massive iPad. We decided to tap into this phone culture we have? While they are incredibly useful, the irony is that something that was made to connect us, tends to isolate us. We turn the everyday into magic and fun. As a company, our behaviour demonstrates that with a sense of wonder a curiosity we set out to create connection and turn the mundane into wonderful. Is SA what you expected? T: We didn’t have expectations as we’ve found pre-conceived ideas aren’t ever met. SA is one of the most exceptional places I’ve been. It has a rich and interesting cultural heritage about it. The Cape Town scenery is breath-taking! We hiked up to Lion’s Head – it was incredible! Next, I want to go surfing *Chuckles*. M: It’s been so wonderful to be here. We feel a sense of familiarity, with such a diverse audience, we’ve found our subtle jokes are read well here. It is like coming back home. We love it! I’ve done a bunch of ‘touristy’ stuff: The Cradle of Humankind just outside of Joburg, hiked up Lions Head and now we are going on safari in a few weeks. We can’t wait for that. There is so much to do here, but we just don’t have enough time! - TLR Blue Man Group

I see you can cast to be a ‘Blue Man’! Who has what it takes?

@bluemangroup

M: You need to be special *laughs* You need to master unique collection of odd talents. We look for a musical and charismatic performer. What we require is someone who can connect with a complete stranger without saying a word. That’s what the show is

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player inraising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.

Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. THE

JOINERY thejoinery.co.za Walk into any major fashion retailer, both local and international, and alongside their rails of clothing you’re bound to find a range promoting eco-organic consciousness. The Joinery are a niche Cape Town based fashion business who share this vision but the very fact that they are by no means a large commercial enterprise means that their goal of

Tell us briefly what The Joinery is all about? Natalie: The Joinery is a sustainable, ethical, fashion and lifestyle brand. We strive for a high-end design aesthetic with an African conscience. Kim: We work with suppliers who share our commitment to the environment by supporting practices that reduce their carbon footprint, opting for carbon-neutral or carbon-negative materials wherever possible.

creating beautiful yet conscious garments is even more authentic, the ‘real McCoy’ if you will. Carbon footprint and the reuse of materials aside, in the past seven years, sisters Natalie and Kim have built integrous relationships with all their suppliers. Here we talk to them, known by many in Cape Town as The Ellis Sisters, about their journey towards The Joinery.

You both have worked in the international fashion scene, how did that influence you to launch The Joinery? Natalie: I was fortunate enough to study fashion and film at the London College of Fashion. My mentor, Charty Durrant, former Fashion Editor of British Vogue and other well-known English newspapers, encouraged me to question what’s behind a label; where, how, why and by whom is a garment produced? This sparked a deep interest in sustainable fashion. Later working in the broadcast industry and covering events such as the The British Fashion Council’s ethical fashion week showcase, Estethica, and interviewing sustainable fashion pioneers such as Vivienne Westwood it opened me up to the growing movement of cutting edge designers committed to working eco sustainably.

‘who made my clothes?’ The partnerships we forge with the people that produce our products are an important part of our approach. We are committed to working with local producers wherever possible as part of our vision for creating economic opportunities, thereby uplifting and empowering communities. It’s an approach that is also about preserving the legacy of craftsmanship that is constantly threatened by the proliferation of fast fashion. By supporting local makers we ensure that the creativity, skills and expertise of these artisans live on.

Kim: Fashion for me was a case of serendipity, I was fortunate enough to have worked at top London Fashion Houses for some of the world’s most inspiring creative directors including Christopher Bailey at Burberry and Tamara Melon at Jimmy Choo who both fuelled my desire to pursue a life in fashion.

with talented Fashion Illustrator Caroline Tomlinson on creating a bespoke hand sketched African print which has long been a creative dream of The Joinery. We are also focusing on conceptualising and creating bespoke responsible fabrics right here on African soil, proudly creating fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles, collected here in South Africa, saving plastic from landfill and turning it into luxury products.

And the decision to actually channel all this experience into your own business? Natalie: In 2010 we relocated back home to Cape Town after living in London for 8 years. Being back home on African soil was the catalyst for The Joinery’s birth. We wanted to get involved in strengthening our local community, and we uncovered a plethora of extremely talented women who, due to the demise of the South African textile and manufacturing industry, are highly skilled yet unemployed. Tell us about the network of craftsmen and women that you’ve formed? Kim: We are proudly on the board of Fashion Revolution, encouraging consumers to ask,

What can readers expect in 2017 from The Joinery? Natalie: 2017 is a busy year for the Joinery, with the launch of our luxury handbag collection, called The Artisnal Collection which honours the style of Africa in the 1970’s with each bag being expertly hand crafted in a local family run leather workshop. We are also launching our latest clothing collection which is a collaboration

hello art BETWEEN DUSK AND DAWN RUNS UNTIL 26 MAY SOUTHERN GUILD, 10 LEWIN STREET, WOODSTOCK Presents over 100 thought-provoking sculptures and paintings by renowned assemblage artist Philippe Bousquet. Known for his intricately constructed jewellike sculptures, Philippe will introduce new directions in his work, including portraiture, fine art and larger-scale structures. Between Dusk and Dawn invites audiences to look beyond what they would normally see, and to search for meaning within the grey areas. Each piece, made from found objects and discarded materials in the traditional spirit of assemblage, tells a story that is open to interpretation based on personal experience, religious views, political leanings and social commentary. EXTENSIONS TO THE LOT LINE RUNS UNTIL 22 APRIL BLANK PROJECTS, 113 - 115 SIR LOWRY ROAD, WOODSTOCK An exhibition by Dorothee Kreutzfeldt. Incorporating installation and wall paintings in addition to paintings on

canvas, the exhibition is a continuation of Kreutzfeldt’s cross-disciplinary practice and artistic engagement with the urban landscape. The city of Johannesburg and its socio-politically constructed histories and spaces have been central to her work over the last 16 years. Her interests lie in how the city continues to craft, shift and explode the experience of time, place and subjectivity. A PAINTING TODAY CLOSES 22 APRIL STEVENSON GALLERY, BUCHANAN BUILDING, 160 SIR LOWRY ROAD, WOODSTOCK A Painting Today proposes an encounter with painting, the most traditional of media, filtered through the contemporary logic of Instagram. Because of social media, the most common way to view pictures today is sequentially. This has triggered a fundamental shift in how we think about images, emphasising their place in the fourth dimension, time, over a timeless two-dimensional existence. The exhibition is conceived as a slideshow, or Instagram feed, in the flesh: it will open with one work, and every day a painting will be added. Over the run of the show, a total of 47 paintings will accumulate on the walls. The gallery’s control over the process will be reduced to a minimum. They

determine who to invite, but the sequence will emerge from an interplay of external factors, such as the date of acceptance of the invitation, painters’ schedules, and logistics such as stretching, shipping and framing. The list of invited painters will reflect the personal interests of the curatorial team, and will include young artists who they have never exhibited before alongside people they represent, international visitors alongside important historical figures. The range of work will reflect the breadth and depth of painterly concerns in contemporary art, and will mimic the jumble of social media where the sacred sits next to the profane, and the monumental and miniscule both fit on the screen of one’s phone. A Painting Today offers a twist on traditional exhibition-making, creating a blank canvas on which painting is invited to roam more or less freely for 47 days. The show includes artists such as Anna Boghiguian, Francis Alÿs, Turiya Magadlela, Penny Siopis, Mduduzi Xakaza and Portia Zvavahera. The daily additions will be documented on the gallery’s website and various social media platforms in real time, coming full circle with an exhibition closing on Saturday 22 April where all the works will be on display.

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,

especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

Discover

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
