EVERY DROP COUNTS AT CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Cape Town International Airport has a robust plan in place to ensure that the airport continues to operate in the event of Day Zero. Since May last year the airport instituted a special committee to focus on water plans and together with the broader fraternity have been working to ensure an appropriate response to the water situation. The airport’s water wise plan is focussed on three key areas which are retaining its license to operate the aerodrome, to reduce water consumption and the augmentation of municipal supply. To date the airport has managed to reduce its consumption by 40% as compared to last year and aims to reduce that even further so that its water consumption is below 50%. Various water augmentation initiatives will allow the airport over the next number of months to become independent of municipal supply. This is achieved, amongst other, through access to ground water and the harvesting of rain water. Projects are currently underway to install and commission the required infrastructure. Cape Town International Airport’s consolidated plans provide sufficient capacity to enable the airport to operate on Day Zero and beyond, should it materialise. Hello Cape Town April 2018 l

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONSTANTLY AIMS FOR NEW RECORDS By the end of 2017, Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) was declared the best airport in Africa although having some good competitors at the finish line. This award and recognition was achieved by an extraordinary team of professionals, led by Deon Cloete (GM), that bears in mind that CTIA is not only a visitor’s first impression, but it is also the strength and the founding phase for the growth of the entire tourism industry of Cape Town and its surrounds. Working hand in hand with relevant stakeholders at both national and local government levels, CTIA is looking to break their own records in the future. After stepping up from the 10 Million arrivals mark, the team recently received final approval to realign its main runway, with a R3.8 billion investment in order to enable further growth. It is also planned to make changes to both the international and domestic terminals and build a luggage transit facility The Cape Town Air Access Partnership with ACSA, WESGRO and all tiers of government already enabled the opening of 13 new routes and 14 route expansions for direct flights to Cape Town, resulting in a growth of 800 000 new inbound seats, most of them being taken by visitors. Next on the plate is securing a viable direct route from North America, preferably from New York, with the intention that this already big source market to the tourism industry will keep expanding and increase benefits in the region. The current terminal services travelers on two levels. The departure level provides local and international travelers with refreshments, shopping and paid lounge facilities. The arrivals level offers all equipping necessities and is designed to provide more space for luggage collection and a bigger meeters and greeters area. In addition to the availability of most car rental companies outside the terminal and authorized taxi operators, since 2010, travelers are making use of the MyCiti bus service, having and using the direct route between CTIA and the city center. As they hold the record of almost 90% on time performance within Africa, the management team aims to keep the success and reputation high in the future too. The new runway will create 50% more capacity, i.e. an increase from 30 flights per hour to 45. It also plans to have a much smaller noise footprint for the neighbouring communities, while giving optimum efficiency and safety to aircrafts and pilots. As a business, the airport is aware of their responsibility to make a meaningful socio-economic contribution into the lives of their surrounding communities. The management of airports are of utmost importance, but they are also committed to making a positive and lasting impact in the lives of their neighbours. The airport’s growth is the catalyst to doing just that. They have many projects running in communities, one being a skills development programme where people in communities are provided with a skill to build their own houses. The master plan for the changes and growth of the CTIA is a corner stone for economic prosperity of the tourism and the importing industries for years to come. 4

Actions have consequences since Alex turns out to be a determined woman who is not to be lightly discarded. In the end, desperate Dan is stalked and haunted by the tenacious Alex so that his marriage, his job, his car and even his daughter’s rabbit are not safe from her attentions. Where the film depicted Alex as a mad harridan whose hairstyle alone should have set alarm bells ringing, Dearden’s play lays more stress on Dan’s culpability. WOMB OF FIRE Set against an episode from the Indian epic, The Mahabharata, the play interweaves personal narrative and contemporary realities with the lives of two women from the founding years of the Cape Colony to interrogate the Womb of Fire that birthed South Africa.

We follow Grote Katrijn van Pulicat’s (1681-1683) journey across India to Batavia and then to Cape Town as the first female bandit slave; and we explore the briefly brutal life of Zara (1648-1671), a Khoekhoen servant woman who was violently punished posthumously by the VOC for the crime of suicide. Womb of Fire looks at the power of the performing female body to challenge the pornography of Empire, in the process decolonising and retrieving itself. Stepping up to justify its given name, The Village Idiot, this venue brings optimism and innocence of the Klein Karoo into the busy city around it. This restaurant and bar, located on the second floor of a preserved Victorian building, is an architectural masterpiece that rebuilds familiar scenery from Oudtshoorn, the “ostrich capital of the world”, on a blasting urban corner. The all wooden interior includes a large bar, diverse combinations of seating areas containing regular and high tables, leathered boots, lounging around a fireplace and a cosy billiard saloon. All is wrapped around with additional balcony seating that completes the feeling of country generosity. The locally brewed design of the venue is well reflected in the restaurant’s menu. This is definitely the place to find, and try everything that is part of the traditional South African carnivore’s diet. Braai boards include boerewors & pap, burgers, steaks & ribs, chops & chakalaka. With biltong on the starters menu and curries having its own section, it is a culinary heaven for young professionals located in the city from all over the country looking for taste of home. It is also a perfect restaurant to sample and come back for every food item you ever wanted to try when reading about the rich history of South Africa’s explorers and Voortrekkers (Boer pastoralists from the frontiers of the Cape Colony who migrated eastwards during the Great Trek). Equally well-designed vegetarian and seafood dishes are available and will comfortably accommodate any member of your group. With themed evenings, live DJ nights and weekly specials, the restaurant is often busy, so it is well advised to make a reservation when coming as a group. If you are looking to make your experience even more authentic book in advance for a braai on the balcony. The wine list is a good reflection of fine South African wines and terroirs and is completed with a large selection of cocktails, local craft beers on tap and bottled.

THE PREMIER EXPRIENCE

While their location worked wonderfully for Premier Hotel Cape Manor for a good few years, between Beach & Main Roads of Sea Point, owners decide to take a bold leap in order to establish themselves as the ‘Home away from Home’ for Cape Town visitors, enabling comfortability for both short and long staying guests. In the last 2 years, after purchasing the neighbouring building, the entire asset got an R11 million renovation. Earthy colour tones, luxurious soft finishes and well picked lighting features make you want to move in permanently. The exciting building that contains standard rooms, family rooms and executive suites were refurbished and further bathroom upgrades are still on the cards and the building’s position offers either sea or mountain landscape views.

In the newly purchased building, Premier owners and designers took a creative approach in order to maximize the potential of a former apartment building. Units were divided in a way that created clusters of standalone rooms but can be also offered as a family retreat in the heart of the city, latterly a series of family lodges with all the service and benefits of a fully serviced hotel. To compliment the needs of the corporate and private business guests, the library styled business center offers free use with all necessary office equipment. On the other hand, to keep the homely hospitality, in addition to the generous buffet breakfast, the restaurant serves a daily, A La Carte, changing menu for Lunch & Dinner and a

choice between an indoor or courtyard setting. The restaurant deck on the second floor, overlooking Cape Town’s beachfront, is still due for an overall upgrade with a special intention to provide wind sheltered, yearround sitting. On top of being located within walking distance from the Sea Point Promenade, beaches and restaurants, the hotel offers to its guests a free shuttle to the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and city center. Premier Hotels & Resorts holds a portfolio of 16 assets across South Africa, including a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, urban hotels and family vacation destinations. 021 430 3400 Marais Rd, Sea Point, Cape Town www.premierhotels.co.za

FIGALICIOUS 100 WAYS at Bay Harbour Market

GREAT GATHERINGS BAY HARBOUR - THE MARKET OF HOUT BAY The Bay Harbour Market is truly a place where the creative energy and the vibrancy of South Africa comes alive! Situated in an old authentic fish factory in a working harbour, an eclectic stylish wonderland of exquisite art, craft and fashion awaits all visitors. Not to mention the delicious aromas of food to tempt all the senses. The market attracts a wide-ranging audience with a keen interest in all things home-grown and a consciousness for recycling! The Bay Harbour KWV Sound Stage is one of Cape Town’s most popular platform for the country’s most exciting musical talents to showcase their abilities. From jiving jazz to awesome acoustic performances, the market comes alive every weekend with varied sounds from across the country.

Most of us have childhood memories of that one uncle that had a fig tree tucked away at the back of the yard. The days of figs in abundance have passed and today, the spotting of figs generally becomes big news. Now Cape Town’s favourite weekend destination, Bay Harbour Market, brings back the nostalgia as it welcomes Figalicious to its wonderful selection of traders. “We have fresh figs, berries, pomegranates, prickly pears and Dragon fruit when in season,” says Shirene Simmons of Figalicious, “and all our figs are sourced locally. We have figs from Worcester as well as organic figs from Wellington - they are smaller but very sweet.” Besides the fresh produce on offer, Shirene and her team also prepare a selection of the most delicious jars - everything from salad dressings and jams to chutneys and figs in brandy. The fig jam is made with raw honey (no sugar) and all products are preservative free. Visit bayharbour.co.za

Small boutiques are laid across the market and offers art, crafts and fashion, all made locally by small producers. 30 Regent Road. www.mojomarket.co.za NEIGHBOURGOODS MARKET Features over a 100 specialty traders every Saturday. KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00, Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00. Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30. Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.

AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Boulders Visitor Centre: +27(0) 21 786 2329 - Adults: R65 Kids: R35 Operating Hours: 7 days a week Dec – Jan: 07h00 – 07h30 Feb – April: 08h00 -18h30 May – Sept: 08h00 – 17h00 Oct – Nov: 08h00 – 18h30

SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great

White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!

CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined

big 5 safaris

Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari? A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:

AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Aquila’s four-star cottages are built largely from rock, thatch and wood to blend with the environment and offer every comfort like roaring log fires, wooden viewing decks, air conditioning, crisp percale linen, rock bathrooms and, in some, alfresco rock showers. Aquila’s afro-chic Aquila Lodge comprises of 3 levels, accessible by a glass panelled lift with magnificent Karoo vistas. The Lodge offers both standard and premier lodge room. Aquila has an outdoor swimming pool, a pool bar, a cigar lounge and a large dining room where the chef presents a rich variety of authentic South African cuisine. Aquila newly opened African spa featuring; 2 large heated indoor pools, steam room, sauna, nail bar, 10 treatment rooms, a couples or group treatment room and an outdoor pool.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

SAFARI

Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
