Did You Know? The Cullinan Diamond was the largest rough diamond ever found, weighing 621.35 grams in total.

On January 26th, 1905 it was discovered at the Premier No. 2 mine in Cullinan, South Africa and named after the mine’s then chairman, Thomas Cullinan. The Cullinan Diamond was put up for sale in London just three months later, but despite drawing substantial interest and attention, it remained unsold for two years. The Transvaal government eventually bought the stone in 1907 and presented it to King Edward VII who had it cut by Joseph Asscher of the Asscher Brothers diamond factory in Amsterdam, on February 10th, 1908. Cullinan produced a wide variety of cuts, stones and sizes, the biggest which was named Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa, weighing in at 106.08 grams. Cullinan 1 was set in the head of the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and Cullinan 2 (the Second Star of Africa), in the Imperial State Crown, both forming part of the Crown Jewels. Seven other major diamonds, weighing 41.66 grams in total, are privately owned by Queen Elizabeth II, who inherited them from her grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1953. To this day, the Great Star of Africa remains the largest clear cut diamond in the world.

orphee et eurydice

Fleur Barron, Brittany Smith, Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi

Gluck’s dream of creating a new style of opera, distinguished by classical simplicity and dramatic integrity, was exquisitely realised in his setting of the Orpheus story. Climaxing in the heartbreaking aria “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice” -- “I have lost my Eurydice”, Gluck’s dramatization of Orphée’s descent into the underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice stands as a moving testament to the power of music. An all women principal cast will take to the stage – Fleur Barron (Orphée), Hlengiwe Mkhawanazi (Eurydice) and Brittany Smith (Amour). Fleur’s recent portrayal as Baba the Turk in The Rake’s Progress in La Monnaie was simply superb, ‘Fleur Barron, an earthy Baba the Turk in ‘The Rake’s Progress’, sounded like a Carmen in the making’, said the New York Times. Amongst Hlengiwe’s many accolades is winning the 2015 Women’s Voice Fellowship from the Luminarts Cultural Foundation in Chicago, she is also no stranger to opera stages in USA, Europe and South Africa. Brittany recently sang the role of Juliet in the CTO / UCT collaboration of Romeo and Juliet (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) to great acclaim. This powerhouse team of ladies will undoubtedly be giving their all in the upcoming performances of Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice presented by Cape Town Opera. Conducted by CTO Associate Music Director Tim Murray, Matthew Wild’s new production will showcase the extraordinary talents of the CTO Chorus, using movement and poetic imagery to create a new vision of this haunting myth. Award-winning costume designer Birrie le Roux, lighting designer Kobus Rossouw, set designer Chris Pienaar and choreographer Louisa Talbot joins the dynamic creative team. There are only 3 performances of Orphée et Eurydice in Cape Town this September. The opera is sung in French with English and isiXhosa translations projected above the stage. seafood heaven

The latest addition to the Sea Grill by La Boheme restaurant chain has arrived in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Situated in the quaint and quiet neighbourhood of Harfield Village (between Claremont and Kenilworth), owners Faizel Khakoo and Anna Rascola, have created seafood heaven. Upon arrival, one is welcomed by friendly staff. The restaurant has a welcoming, relaxed and homely feel, with clear indication that it was converted from what was once a residential property that has been rezoned for commercial use, a common theme in the very popular nightlife and restaurant dotted 2nd Avenue. A blazing fireplace adds the extra touch of comfort and homeliness inside on chilly winter evenings and summer dining on the terrace promises a stunning view the sun dipping behind Table Mountain. Consistent with its sister restaurant in Sea Point, the décor is carried throughout with designs by Cara Saven Wall Design. The kitchen, headed by Chef Siraaj Allie, lends his expertise gained from working in Dubai, Hong Kong and the Cape Winelands. Siraaj made his latest culinary home with the Sea Grill family some years ago. The menu offers an enticing selection of fresh seafood – think oysters, prawns, calamari, linefish, seafood curries, platters and more, alongside Spanishinspired tapas and paella, and Mediterranean-enthused bistro starters, mains, and desserts. They’ve also brought along La Boheme’s famous two-course and three-course dinner special. A 600-bottle strong wine cellar houses some of the best of local wine gems to be found on the winelist. Enjoy an after-work drink in the bar area, reserve a table inside or out for date night, a family dinner, or a celebration amongst friends. Pop in on Thursdays from 5 PM until 6 PM for the weekly ‘Wine Friends’ tasting. CURRENT SPECIALS Lunch: 12 PM – 3 PM, R85, Tuesday to Sunday. worth the journey

Fans of Delheim wines from Stellenbosch already recognise the title as being part of their logo for many years. This is for being located at the end of a cul de sac, on top of one of the most beautiful side roads in the region and at the foot the majestic Simonsberg mountains. And with a great location comes big responsibility. Delheim wine estate, an eco-champion, is one of the founders of the Greater Simosnsberg Conservancy, part of the farm’s long natural heritage. Delheim’s first environmental management plan was written in 1976, so it will come as no surprise that the farm has become a haven for fynbos flora and fauna. This long lasting practice recently got a gastronomic presentation in the form of a wine and fynbos cupcake pairing. Home to the Boland Granite fynbos type, this 4 sectional, artisanal pairing is available at the tasting room 7 days a week (bookings are preferred). This long lasting environmentally friendly practice is mainly possible due to the fact that this estate is a family business with members of the family constantly residing on the property and interacting with guests. You’ll get an everyday welcome drink as soon as you complete the journey, at the gate complex. Gluhwein - warm, scented wine is served over the winter and naturally flavoured fruit water over the summer. The tasting room, another part of family history, holds a great collection of new and old vintages. A skillful eye will also spot the ‘Holy Cellar’ at the back of the room - this is the private collection of the family, holding back the estate’s wine history.

While the front of the tasting room holds the most popular wines, those that are familiar to any South African wine connoisseur, the back of the cellar holds some iconic findings. You’ll find older vintages, limited editions and the award winning Edelspatz Nobel Late Harvest which is back on the shelves after the years of drought that didn’t allow nature to develop the conditions for the vines to produce the perfect grapes. Another point of interest in the tasting room would be the range of Vegan wines. Part of the wider philosophy of environmental awareness, the first vegan wine was launched in the late 70’s. It is the Pinotage-Rosé and it is currently joined with Sauvignon Blanc and a Shiraz-Cabernet. City dwellers can easily find them at Spar & Checkers supermarkets. Known for their location at the edge of a natural forest, Delheim is an exit point to a 5 km trail or guided walk as well as mountain biking (MTB). Permits can be purchased at the welcome center. A more relaxing way to enjoy the forest can be made by ordering a picnic from the estate restaurant. Located on the far side of the estate, behind the wine cellar, the shaded picnic ground is a place for the whole family with lots to enjoy and explore. With the estate’s practice of bio-natural water management and an assortment of carefully developed dams, ponds and waterways, you’ll enjoy a rich diversity of bird life. Picnics are usually available between September and March but if you are a winter visitor and would still like to enjoy the outdoors on a lovely day, give them a shout, the restaurant will make a plan. Now that we’ve mentioned it, the restaurant includes indoor seating and a popular, large balcony. It is situated in front of an opening in the mountain landscape and offers a view as far as Table Mountain on a day with good visibility. The homey South African menu embrace its location with offering, among others, dishes that include wild mushrooms. Although not picked on the property regularly, members of the area and the wine club, often join the organised picking days a few times a year. It is a menu that will suit every palate with well presented, generous dishes. The restaurant offers a daily German Breakfast and a Cape Malay menu for lunch. On Sundays, during winter months, the tasting room, mentioned earlier, hosts a series of Jazz and fondue lunches. Patrons are seated around different table sizes and are entertained by excellent local talents. A gathering fit for any party. Delheim will gladly host your conference and share their beautiful location with any visitor. Do not forget to toss a coin into the wishing well before you leave - you will definitely want to come back. Delheim is located on Knorhoek Road, off the R44. The estate is open for visitors 7 days a week. For more info and reservations visit www.delheim.com

a breath taking experience

Much like the difference between travelling the world and browsing Instagram feeds, there is a difference between the knowledge that our treasured city wraps the magnificent Table Mountain National Park, rolling all the way down the Cape Peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope and seeing this marvel with your own eyes. Atlantico Scenic Flight

A peninsula, all wrapped with Antarctic water of the cold Benguela current, holding permanent colonies of penguins and seals, seasonally hosting dolphins and whales. A land that rolls from a modern harbour, to an urbanised metropolis, changing into the gentle curves of historic vineyards of the Constantia Wine Valley, ending with the open view of the tip that was considered for many decades to be the southernmost point of the continent. And you can view it all comfortably seated in an Airbus H120 & H130 helicopter. The forefront of eco-friendly aviation, offering a smooth ride and great visibility.

Cape Town Helicopters, the leading company in its field, offers visitors an unparalleled experience with aviation-grade headsets and a $10 000 camera system from Rugged Video™. happy birthday

Saturday, 13 July 2019, marked the official day that Groot Constantia estate entered its 334th year of uninterrupted wineproduction. This makes Groot Constantia the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa and the origin of the South African wine industry. 1685 was a busy year globally with events such as the Duke of York becoming the King of England and Scotland, whilst rebellions and battles abounded. Closer afield, the Cape Colonists sent a commissioner to Europe to attract more settlers, Copper was discovered in Namaqualand and Simon van der Stel, the Governor of the Cape Colony, was granted property which he named “Constantia”. Over centuries the property was subdivided which gave rise to the name “Groot Constantia”, the property with the original but altered homestead of Simon van der Stel. GROOT CONSTANTIA WAS BORN And thus the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa was founded and became the origin of the South African wine industry. With an uninterrupted history of wine production since 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine producing Estate and the 13th of July sees this iconic Cape wine Estate celebrating its 334th birthday. “A little over three centuries since inception and a vastly changing world has not held Groot Constantia back and the Estate continues to move from strength to strength,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia, who explains that Groot Constantia is now a Provincial Heritage Site and a living museum with the task of preserving the history and cultural legacy of the South African wine industry for the people of South Africa. “It is our role to nurture Groot Constantia for many more generations to come. ”The current owners of the Estate, the Groot Constantia Trust, a non-profit company, has ensured that Groot Constantia is beautifully maintained and operated to the highest standards – delivering award winning wine and a top-quality experience to visitors. WHAT TO EXPECT AT GROOT CONSTANTIA “History is woven into the fabric of Groot Constantia’s story - from the moment visitors arrive they are transported back in time,” says Naudé, “People visit Groot Constantia from all over the world to enjoy the Estates innovative self-guided tours, sample the award-winning wines and feel the rich history – all offered through the unique Visitors Route Experience.” This family-friendly experience follows a specially designed circular route through Groot Constantia’s key attractions. The original Manor House at Groot Constantia (which is an Iziko Museum) is the starting point. From here, guests make their way to the famed Cloete Cellar, which is the original wine production cellar from 1791 and which now houses a wine museum and tasting room. After enjoying a wine tasting, with your own Spiegelau crystal glass to take home as a memento, guests then head to the modern Production Cellar, which is the departure point for the self-guided or guided cellar and vineyard audiotours. There is also the option to add a Chocolate and Wine Pairing Experience to your Visitors Route ticket – a must for lovers of the sweeter side of things. Groot Constantia has two top-notch restaurants, Jonkershuis and Simon’s, where visitors can enjoy a great meal after they have finished exploring the Visitors Route. Jonkershuis is surrounded by ancient oak trees and Simon’s offers al fresco dining on the terrace. You can also order a picnic basket to enjoy on the lawns.

l Hello Cape Town August 2019

AND OF COURSE IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE WINES The Estate’s most iconic wine is a premium sweet wine called Grand Constance, which was born in Groot Constantia’s Cloete Cellar, and which has a history that dates back to the Napoleonic era. Before his death in 1821, Napoleon drank ‘Grand Constance’ while in exile. It is recorded that Louis Philippe (King of the French) was a regular client. The British Royal family, as well as Frederic the Great of Prussia, have also all appreciated the famous sweet wine of Constantia.

Constantia bottles, bottle shards and bottle seals dating from as far back as 1774 have been found in far corners of the world in some unusual circumstances - at the bottom of the ocean, in the cellar of a castle, on a beach from a shipwreck, and unearthed in an excavation. “Today Groot Constantia is a small volume wine Estate that produces limited quantities of hand crafted classic estate wines which continue to win accolades – achieving over 100 top awards in the past 10 years alone,” says Naudé. “Recently the South African Wine index (SAWi) graded Groot Constantia as one of South Africa’s Top 10 Wine Cellars. The Estate was also selected as one of the Top 10 White Wine Cellars and Grand Constance was chosen as the best dessert wine in South Africa. This is the only wine farm that is a member of the Big Six tourist destinations in Cape Town (the other members include Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, Kirstenbosch and Cape Point) and it is easy to see why when you visit and spend time at this special Provincial Heritage Site. Groot Constantia is inviting the public to come and celebrate their auspicious 334th year with them on the Estate, and to experience and feel everything that make this one of the most popular destinations in the Cape. Groot Constantia Wine Estate is also part of the City Sightseeing mini peninsula tour.

SAFARI

Charles Dickens celebrated it in Edwin Drood, Jane Austen’s character recommended it as a cure for a broken heart in Sense and Sensibility and Charles Baudelaire compared Constantia wine to his lover’s lips in his most famous volume of poems, Les Fleurs du Mal.

for the sake of our future

A red roman in the De Hoop MPA by Steve Benjamin

Positioned on the tip of the continent, South Africa enjoys a long and diverse coastline. Facing both the Indian and the Atlantic oceans, we enjoy a plethora of marine life and border some unique eco-systems that are created by the mixed currents of hot and cold sea waters. This gives us and our visitors an abundance of fisheries and marine life, a source for visual and gastronomic pleasure. In order to sustain this natural wealth for years to come, the Department of Environmental Affairs has declared new Marine Protected Areas (MAPs) all around our coastline. These are to become our Ocean National Parks, aiming to protect our ocean heritage for future generations and support fisheries sustainability, risk management, adaptation to climate change and tourism. MPAs are so much more than ocean National Parks because of their role in fisheries sustainability. The returns on having well designed and properly run MPAs can be measured in their economic, environmental and social benefits. MPAs help meet our Ocean Economy and Sustainable Development Goals, safeguarding marine environments and services provided by healthy oceans including food, climate resilience and medicines. FISH FOREVER MPAs support fisheries sustainability by protecting breeding and nursery areas, providing areas for resources to recover from overuse and through spillover or flow of benefits to adjacent areas. In an increasingly industrialised ocean, MPAs help maintain food and job security in the fisheries sector. Many of our fish stocks are severely exploited after years of heavy fishing. MPAs allow ecosystems, animals and plants living in them to recover, providing safe spaces in which fish can breed undisturbed, protecting spawning and nursery areas. BIGGER, BETTER, AND MORE ABUNDANT In many fish species, the older and bigger females get, the more fertile and productive they become. When fish are allowed to mature undisturbed, the returns increase exponentially as their number of offspring increases. Young fish move outside the no-take area into exploited areas. This flow of benefits is known as the “spillover effect” where fish populations build up inside the MPA, restocking fishing grounds.   STREAMLINING DECISION MAKING TO UNLOCK THE OCEAN ECONOMY MPAs can help streamline environmental authorisations and represent a practical solution for managing ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs). By setting aside areas of representative ecosystem types, other areas can be freed up for development.

Hello Cape Town August 2019

BIO-DISCOVERY AND BENEFITS FOR THE BIO-ECONOMY Marine species may produce medicines and other compounds are yet to be discovered. This provides untapped possibilities for the bio-economy. One of our South African seaslug species, Leminda Millecra, produces a compound that fights oesophageal cancer. COPING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE MPAs help maintain resilience in ecosystems under stress from climate change. In ecosystems it contributes to resilience for people living in coastal communities. Healthy shorelines protect and buffer coastal communities and infrastructure from extreme weather, tsunamis and sea-level rise. Protection of healthy shorelines now yields future benefits and safeguards their social and economic wellbeing. Leminda millecra by Georgina Jones

BENCHMARK TO MEASURE CHANGE

MPAs help us understand what a healthy ecosystem should look like. We can use this information to measure change in unprotected areas. These baselines help measure the impacts of climate change, invasive alien species, pressure from fishing, mining and other activities outside the MPA. MPAS INCREASE TOURISM REVENUE MPAs attract local and international tourists. The estimated value of South African marine ecotourism is at least R2,130 billion in overall value to the economy. The Simonstown African penguin colony and Sodwana Bay coral reefs attract thousands of visitors every day. Our oceans have species that occur nowhere else on earth. Noah the Coelacanth by Peter Timm

JOB CREATION & SUPPLEMENTARY LIVELIHOODS

MPAs can provide important alternative sources of income and livelihoods for many people. Jobs associated with the marine wildlife economy, such as tour guiding, scuba and shark cage diving, turtle, bird and whale watching are all possible close to protected areas. Communities can benefit from the opportunities from tourists, allowing for entrepreneurial enterprises and jobs linked directly to MPAs, including tour guides, rangers, park managers, gate, hospitality and maintenance staff and in-house educators. PRESERVATION OF CULTURE AND HISTORY Sites of historic significance (such as shipwrecks) and other of archaeological and historical interest, diversify tourism opportunities and development. INCREASING OCEAN PROTECTION South Africa is in the process of declaring several new MPAs to advance ocean protection around the country. These new MPAs will: • Protect offshore ecosystems for the first time, some of these contain Critically Endangered habitats and species.

Rangers doing monitoring work in the Aliwal Shoal MPA

• Help overexploited species to recover and improve fishery yields. • Manage Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs), Sensitive habitats such as coral and sponge grounds and Essential Fish Habitats. • Improve protection of well-known animals such as whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles and seabirds to ensure their survival. • Streamline environmental decision making, support ocean economy and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals. FUTURE FRIENDLY OCEAN MANAGEMENT

The sea is a place of cleansing and spiritual renewal by Kerry Sink

MPAs provide opportunities for future generations by supporting sustainable development and ensuring the ocean continues to provide benefits. Our children need us to protect our oceans. Hello Cape Town August 2019 l

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
