in 1988 while opening the ANC’s Paris office. This highly acclaimed work is produced and performed by actress, Denise Newman and directed by Basil Appollis. Shortlisted for the prestigious Commonwealth Writers Prize, Heart of Redness tells a story of South African village life against the backdrop of a notorious episode from the country’s past. Camugu, who left for America during apartheid, has returned to Johannesburg. Disillusioned by the problems of the new democracy, he travels to the remote Eastern Cape where, in the nineteenth century, a teenage prophetess named Nonqawuse commanded the Xhosa people to kill their cattle and burn their crops, promising that once they did so the spirits of their ancestors would rise and drive the occupying English into the ocean. The failed prophecy split the Xhosa into Believers and Unbelievers, dividing brother from brother, wife from husband, with devastating consequences. One hundred and fifty years later, the two groups’ descendants are at odds over plans to build a vast casino and tourist resort in the village, and Camugu is soon drawn into their heritage and their future. The Fugard Theatre, 19 - 22 Aug, Tickets R100 - R190 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

This is a must-see production.” Baxter Theatre, 19 Aug - 12 Sep, Tickets R60 - R120 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

The Two Oceans Aquarium offers visitors the opportunity to discover the diverse marine life found off the southern African coast. Through displays ranging from the small and almost fantastical Knysna seahorses, to large ragged-tooth sharks, the Aquarium holds wondrous discoveries for young and old, around every corner. Meet the animals that call the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean their home – and the brightly coloured ones that live in the warm Indian Ocean. Be mesmerised by the swaying of the giant kelp in the aptly named Kelp Forest Exhibit- one of only three living kelp forest displays in the world. Or come face-to-face with giant spider grabs and have an adventurous tactile experience at the Touch Pool. The AfriSam Children’s Centre provides hours of fun for young children. Here they can take part in artsand-crafts, play on the modular climbing unit, watch a puppet show or just colour-in. They can also watch the antics of our rockhopper penguins as they dash through the water and enjoy their outside pool. The area is themed as “a Day at the Beach” and comes complete with a large sandpit for great sandcastle building. All of this while they learn about our oceans and the wonderful animals that live in them. The Aquarium offers qualified divers the opportunity to dive in the I&J Predator Exhibit with ragged-tooth sharks, turtles and shoals of other predatory fishes. For divers with an advanced qualification, diving in the Kelp Forest Exhibit, surrounded by a multitude of fish, is a “must-do” dive. Dive bookings are essential and can be done by emailing dive@aquarium.co.za or online at www.aquarium.co.za. The Two Oceans Aquarium’s onsite restaurant, Shoreline Café offers patrons wholesome, wellpriced and delicious fare. With its dedicated children’s play area, fast service and spectacular view of Table Mountain and the yacht marina, it provides an ideal spot for families to grab a quick bite or to sit back and relax after an exciting visit to the Aquarium. Shoreline Cafe is accessible without entering the Aquarium and is open from 09:00 until 18:00 daily. The Aquarium Shop has a wide range of gifts and souvenirs. From t-shirts to soft toys, there’s a gift for everyone. For further information, please visit our website www.aquarium.co.za, join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@2OceansAquarium).

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND INVERDOORN
been eradicated from the area for 150 years. The buffalo herd is healthy and continually expanding. You are bound to see these volatile creatures on safari. The Cape leopard has long been an inhabitant of the vast mountain ranges, but its solitary and nocturnal habits make it an elusive creature. The search for the Big 5 is the highlight of many safaris, and Inverdoorn delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience searching for these famous creatures.
CAPE FUR SEAL Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge is located in the Ceres Karoo, just two and a half hours from Cape Town. Stretching across 10 000 hectares, Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Driving over the well-beaten track that winds through the reserve, you may come across any number of animals. Making their way through the succulent plant life that characterises the floral diversity of the Karoo, you will find a myriad of antelope such as kudu, eland, impala, springbok and gemsbok. You will be captivated by the distinct markings of the zebra and the graceful gait of the giraffe, while the brute power of the buffalo and the majestic beauty of the Cape Barbary lion will astound you. Perched atop a safari vehicle or standing in a lookout point within the heart of the reserve you will be lost in the awesome vastness which surrounds you, as well as the solitude of the Karoo. Rangers add a rich element of humour and storytelling to the safari with anecdotes of the animals, wildlife facts and, most importantly, the threats facing many species today.
Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old.
At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has re-introduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having

ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. BOULDERS PENGUIN COLONY Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination.
The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Boulders Visitor Centre: +27(0) 21 786 2329.
They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their

CHACMA BABOONS The Chacma baboons at Cape Point keep scientists intrigued, as they have adapted so well to their coastal habitat that they venture out at low tide to eat mussels, rock lobsters,
limpets and crabs. Seafood is widely considered brainfood, which would explain how these clever primates are able to help themselves to a picnic basket in your car. Remember to keep your car doors locked and keep a wide berth because they are wild animals. Chacma baboons are seen regularly along the Cape Point Route, and dassies (which look like over-sized guinea pigs but are, in fact, a distant relative of the elephant) and lizards can be found basking in the sun on mountainous rocks and crevices.
Est. 1999
(NB: When viewing baboons it is imperative that you do not approach or feed these animals – it is illegal and they do bite.)
Keep your eyes peeled for small antelope such as the duiker and the steenbok when visiting sites such as the Rhodes Memorial, Cape Point and other nature reserves. The baboons are a common site when visiting Cape Point.
GREAT WHITE SHARK
For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ART IN THE GARDEN AT KIRSTENBOSCH NBG Extinction! Dinosaurs, and Cycads? is a new exhibition in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research. The exhibition will run until June 2017. Visit www.sanbi.org for more information.

How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Take the N1 towards Paarl, take Exit 23 at the R302 Durban Road/Willem van Schoor Ave. (off ramp is opposite Toys’R’us™.) Then turn left at the top into Willem van Schoor Ave. First set of traffic lights left again into Mispel Road. SHOPPING PRECIOUS STONES Southern Africa is often considered the “gemstone capital of the world” as almost half of the world’s gemstones are found in this part of the world. While some may only think of gemstones as the fabulous and expensive varieties like Diamonds and Tanzanite, there are also many other beautiful and unusual gemstones that are associated with Southern Africa – like Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pietersite, Malachite, Verdite, Blue lace Agate, Sodalite, and many more. One of the most popular and convenient places to experience the amazing beauty and variety of gemstones that are found and crafted locally is right here in the V&A Waterfront at the popular Scratch Patch and Mineral World in Dock Road next to the parking garage, and just down from the Two Oceans Aquarium. The Scratch Patch has become worldfamous as a place where you can have loads of fun “scratching” for your favourite gemstones from hundreds of thousands of tumble-polished stones that quite literally cover the floor. This is a truly original concept that has been copied in other parts of the world. According to how many gemstones you wish to take home, visitors have a choice from a small bag to a large cup container. At the Mineral World factory shop you can see an incredible range of gemstone items including stone carvings and other “art” pieces; high-quality “investment” gems (like Tanzanite and Diamonds); jewellery of all kinds; and lots of inexpensive gemstone items that make ideal take-home-gifts. You will also discover a large range of mineral specimens, rough gemstone pieces, and fossils that will fascinate you and bring out the geologist in you! Besides the outlet at the V&A Waterfront, there are also Scratch Patch/Mineral World branches at Simon’s Town (Dido Valley Road, and also the site of the Topstones tumble-polishing and gem-crafting factory), and at the West Coast Ostrich Farm (Van Schoorsdrif Road, just off the N7). So, make sure that you discover the magic of gemstones! Scratch Patch & Mineral World, 1 Dock Road (next to the parking garage and near the Aquarium). Tel 021 419 9429.
OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive
production process making it costly as well as beautiful. Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in highend demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993. After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.
Always close, Always fresh, Always convenient.
That’s why I love my SPAR!
They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and elegancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted. They spent months looking for and visiting factories all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals. In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone. Ostrich leather and Mohair products can be found at Karoo Classics. See their ad in our Handmade Section. Hello Cape Town August 2015 l

WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.

MORE INTERNATIONAL GLORY AS VAN RYN’S DISTILLERY CLAIMS YET ANOTHER AWARD The Best Distillery Tour in the world is on your doorstep at the Van Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch – this according to judges at the 2015 Distillery Experience Awards. Around the world, tourists visit distilleries while on holiday in search of unique cultural experiences, and with brandy’s long history in South Africa – it was brought here in the 1800s by Dutch sailors – there is much to tell, culminating in recent awards for Van Ryn’s such as Best Worldwide Brandy and International Brandy Producer of the Year. The Best Distillery Tour award celebrates the effectiveness of thoughtful distillery tours. Judges were in search of the most innovative tour that offers tourists an educational and memorable experience into the production and distillation of spirits. Judges commented that the Van Ryn’s team was clearly proud of their work. “They are obviously very focused on what they are doing and work hard to deliver it well. It is an impressive tour and great visitor numbers show that they offer visitors something quite different and interesting – such as the cooperage and the presentation on how barrels are put together. The tour also integrates well with other attractions on site. (Van Ryn’s)… offers informative and rich content delivered in an interesting way.” Van Ryn’s brand home manager Fre-Nay Brown said the award was fantastic news. “The team is extremely dedicated to creating a memorable and entertaining experience and we hope this award will encourage locals who have not yet visited us, to come and try our premium brandies, learn about the magic of distillation and discover for themselves why South African brandies are world-class.”
