MAKING WAVES IN CAPE TOWN Nu Metro Cinemas has a varied selection of cinema options in Cape Town - with cineplexes based at V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk and GrandWest Casino, as well as in Worcester. Apart from world-class facilities featuring the latest digital projection technology for 3D and 2D films – Nu Metro also offers cinemagoers in Cape Town specialised experiences such as 4DX and SceneVIP. Africa’s first ever multi-sensory 4DX theatre opened at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront in December last year. Nu Metro Cinemas signed an agreement with CJ 4DPLEX, creator of 4DX – the world’s first 4D cinema technology for feature films – a partnership that for the first time brings 4DX to Africa. 4DX, which uses motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning, scents, and more to provide moviegoers with a truly immersive experience, has been expanding at a fast pace and, with this deal, will be available in 182 auditoriums across 34 countries, with a goal to reach 300 auditoriums by the first half of 2016. “The opening of the first ever 4DX cinema in Cape Town last year – followed by Durban earlier this year, and Johannesburg this coming September - is a strategic move, fitting our commitment to supplying customers with a fully immersive cinema experience, utilizing the best, most up-to-date world-class technology,” stated Nitesh Matai, GM for Nu Metro Cinemas. “4DX fulfills those expectations as the new 4D cinemas involve all five senses for consumers to enjoy a cinema outing like nothing else they’ve seen, heard, or felt before. With the introduction of 4DX, Nu Metro Cinemas now joins an elite group of cinema chains using this technology, and showcasing popular blockbusters in this groundbreaking format.” Nu Metro’s Head of Technical was sent to Seoul for 3 weeks to specifically train for certified status to manage the installation of 4DX technology locally. A current cinema at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront was converted to 4DX. The cinema’s catering, box office and Scene VIP areas have also been renovated and upgraded during this process. Scene VIP at V&A Waterfront is Nu Metro’s first class cinema option. It includes an exclusive lounge where cinemagoers can order delectable food items, sweet and savoury, hot and cold drinks, as well as the standard soda and popcorn options. The Scene VIP at Nu Metro V&A is also licensed, with its own separate bar, which is good news for those cinema fans who like to enjoy a glass of wine or something bit stronger with their favourite movie. Scene VIP cinemas include luxury recliner seats, fold-out trays for food and drink orders, as well as personalised waiter service along with superior Dolby Digital sound and the best in screening technology – it truly is the luxury cinema of choice for connoisseurs who love going to the movies with a touch of style.
For more info and to book tickets for any of Nu Metro’s cinemas, call 0861-CINEMA (246362) or go to numetro.co.za.

The inspiration for this dynamic new production is based on author Abraham J Twerski`s book Addictive Thinking that examines the notion of compulsion, addiction, denial and abuse of self. Foot has been integral in the development of more than 35 new South African plays, including Tshepang, Solomon and Marion, Hear And Now, Reach and Karoo Moose, which have all toured internationally with great success and they are published by Wits Press and Oberon books.

South Africa is proud to boast many opera singers who are well established on the international stage.
In the tradition of the awarding-winning BAFANA REPUBLIC satirical revues that used sport and the FIFA World Cup as entry points for biting social commentary, Mike van Graan’s PAY BACK THE CURRY! comprises a series of sketches to make audiences think even as they laugh. Produced by Siv Ngesi and directed by Rob van Vuuren, PAY BACK THE CURRY! features the multi-talented Daniel Richards depicting a variety of characters (and caricatures) commenting on all things contemporary, from sparrows and statues to Zuptas and zombies!
One of the prominent singers today is Johan Botha. Like Mimi Coertse before him, Botha has been a Kammersanger since 2004, a coveted title awarded to only the best in Austria. That Botha is one of the most important singers of our time is indisputable. The vocalist studied in South Africa, made his debut in Roodepoort and then in 1990 moved to Europe. Name any leading opera house, and he has sung there — Vienna and New York, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Sydney, Salzburg and Chicago. The concert will feature a wide variety of arias and other works.

The story revolves around a fictional meeting of two giants of South African history that could have changed the course of our history. Deeply controversial at present and more than a hundred years after his death, Cecil John Rhodes still enjoys fame and notoriety, as Southern Africa’s arch-imperialist, while the multitalented man of letters, Sol Plaatje, was one of the ANC’s founding fathers in 1912.
Plaatje (Sipho Mahlatshana) and Rhodes (David Dukas) meet while Kimberley is besieged during the Anglo-Boer War. In the autumn of his life, Rhodes, the king of diamonds, hires the young Plaatje as his new secretary and the two develop the unlikeliest of friendships, full of humour, warmth and pathos. But the country is changing and as Plaatje’s political career begins to dawn, the two men become set on a collision course that will change their lives. Artscape Theatre, 25 Aug - 11 Sep, Tickets R180 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi KAROO MOOSE Performed in English with isiXhosa, the story takes place in a remote and impoverished village in the Karoo, where the inhabitants are struggling to survive. A young girl called Thozama ends up killing a moose. But what is the moose doing there, and how did it get there? Writer and director Lara tackles the disintegration of the family unit and the violation of innocence endured by so many South African children. The play cleverly and creatively combines African story-telling and magical realism.
THE PAINTED ROCKS AT REVOLVER CREEK A story inspired by the life of a farm worker called Nukain Mabuza, a self-taught artist living in segregated pre-liberation South Africa. The play enjoyed a highly acclaimed debut season in New York in 2015, which was extended several times.

WE’VE BEEN TO
In the beginning of 2016, the Leeu Collection commenced on an extraordinary expedition with the Cape Brewing Company (CBC) to bring you Tuk Tuk Microbrewery in the beautiful village of Franschhoek. This little gem of a brewery offers a truly mesmeric experience. The vaulted ceiling, exposed brick and sandblasted walls, copper and stainless steel service pipes running overhead radiate a rustic industrial feel. Patrons have the option to be seated indoors around the microbrewery and can observe the fine craft beer in its process of being expertly brewed. Alternatively, one can sit outdoors on the bustling main street of the village. Dewald Goosen, the seasoned brew master on-site, produces 4 styles of beer in a 250- litre capacity brewery. The handcrafted Tuk Tuk branded beers are: Lager, Weiss, Dunkel and Pale Ale - all served either in pints or half pints. Two of the Tuk Tuk brews will change seasonally. Sample all or simply enjoy your long-time favourite flavour. The brew further has a unique and local touch by the brew water

HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD GETTING TO KNOW THE ICONIC LALA SERIES The LALA cabinet from Dokter and Misses has become part of an iconic series for the celebrated design brand. It represents an embodiment of the collaboration between husband-andwife team Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin, where Adriaan is a trained industrial designer and Katy a graphic designer. Having shown pieces from this series with Southern Guild, we had to find out more. Katy explains what makes the LALA Techno and LALA Shwantla editions so special. What is the LALA all about? The common thread between all of our LALA drinks cabinets is in the shape and the materials. Each cabinet is handmade from mild steel, with four doors and two bronze tinted glass shelves. The idea was to make a cabinet that was a solid form, with no protruding handles and hinges, which are concealed, forming an uninterrupted front surface. We also wanted the shape to be unconventional, so all the LALA planes are angled (aside from the back), resulting in a solid piece that has impact in a single colour as well as being a great canvas for graphic explorations, as the LALA Shwantla and LALA Techno have proved. What spurred on the idea to create LALA Shwantla? This piece is the first LALA we ever hand-painted, so we wanted to explore different, almost “odd” colour combinations. The shape of the LALA lends itself to a symmetrical, graphic layout and the angled surfaces of the cabinet allows for graphic interplay between the painted shapes and their canvas. What inspired the first painted surface? During the time we were very inspired by the decadence and mid-century modern of Palm Springs as well as Litema motifs used in Sotho mural art. You’ll also notice that the pieces are evidently hand-painted and the brush strokes made visible is intentional. We love the colour combination! The LALA Techno is also a special one. What gave you the idea to create it? We wanted to have fun with this one. This piece is a fusion between Art Deco architectural detailing and computergenerated graphics. It’s basically a collection of hand-painted, large-scale gradients. The needle ceramics at the top were also created in the same thinking, that’s why they work so well together! And no, the ceramics are not fixed to the cabinet and can be rearranged easily. What do you love most about this piece? The interior is painted purple! Dokter and Misses is a celebrated design company that has shown repeatedly with Southern Guild in Miami, New York, Dubai, Basel and London, and is currently showing at the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial. WE’VE SEEN Anthea Delmotte, one of South Africa’s most sought-after artists was born in Windhoek in Namibia 1970. After living in several towns, she eventually settled down on top of Piketberg Mountain on a beautiful farm with her children. Running an organic fruit farm, a self-catering guest house, mother to 4 and being a self-taught famous artist is all in a day’s work for this Dynamo! Anthea Delmotte! Wow, it is a privilege to meet you! Tell us, who are you and what do you do in 5 sentences? Who I am is quite multifaceted in that my two most important roles are that of being a mother and an artist. Second to that, I play many other roles such as being: a father, a farmer, a cleaner, a chef, a handyman and so forth! *chuckles* Who I am in person is way too complicated for the 2 sentences I have left; however, I suppose I can sum it up in short: I enjoy simple living, love nature, art, music, good movies and reading about what interests me. To be honest, I don’t know what to do with my last sentence! *laughs* hmmm… I enjoy good humour – it keeps you young! Being a self-taught artist – what does that mean to you as a painter? How do you find it different in regards to artists who have studied for years and trained to get to where you are today? It’s only different to those who choose to see it as different. It’s all about perspective. When it comes down to it, information is available all over and is right at our fingertips! I suppose, if I had to really look into the differences, I would say that the learning for the ‘studied’ was more confined to one specific place and period, where as being self-taught, my learning has been all over and is endless. However, at the end, we both learn the information that’s out there - both practical and theoretical. What work do you most enjoying doing? Probably painting *chuckles* but I also enjoy conceptualising and structural work - be it on a small or large scale. It’s actually the full process that satisfies me. With painting I really enjoy big works. I truly enjoy being physically involved and becoming part of the picture I create.
*All art displayed is done by Anthea Delmotte
What jobs have you done other than being an artist? Nothing that stands out for any period worth mentioning. It’s always been art. Albeit just different forms of it: dressmaking and design, interiors, murals etc. I do own and live on a beautiful farm which harvests macadamia nuts, citruses, apricots and so forth so I am quite the farmer! *laughs* But I quite enjoy the labour in harvesting and being in nature. It is peaceful. I love gardening or working on my fountain.
it transcends reason and speaks to the heart – without a word. It tells the story of a time and a place and of people – of their ways and their feelings; and of my way and my feelings; my life. It says everything on a single page. It fills me with wonder, because it taps directly into the original source of existence, directly into creation.
What do you dislike about the art world? When it becomes inhumane. It is quite a strong term to use, however at times it can truly become something out of a horror movie. When people forget we are all humans and it becomes all about competition or greed or power. We are all just the same. We die the same and we get sick the same. Everyones’ blood is red at the end of the day. Art is a creative world and sometimes people loose perspective. Creativity can both be applied for good or bad. It is exceptionally important to me to use your creativity for the greater good as opposed to self-gain. That perspective has poor long-term consequences – in any instance in life. Stay humble and true to the better path.
What is the main challenge you face when beginning a painting? Always money for materials and then finding space in my schedule! Luckily I don’t really get creative blocks – it was only when my youngest son died that I battled to cling onto my creative purpose. It was an exceptionally difficult period for me in which artistically, I found doing 3 dimensional works distracting. It helped focus my mind on the intricacies of the form. Moving passed that, as long as I have the love of my amazing kids, my materials and time – I am as content as anyone could be.
What project are you working on now? I’m doing a studio sale in Cape Town actually! With my studio being in Picketberg, it is too far away for most people, so I have decided to bring it to them! I found a very interesting and funky place: The Woodstock Gin Company. Come 4th August there will be awesome gin tasting to compliment the exhibition. Besides this, I’m experimenting with my ‘Cross-Pollinate’ project and on my “In Touch With Feel” series - even some of my older “Portals” works! At the end of the year I am holding a solo exhibition in Johannesburg, so that is taking up my time too! It will be a landscape exhibition which I am excited to get started! Watch this space! Where do you find your inspiration for your work? Life! *laughs* But in all seriousness, life happens, dealing us each different hands all the time. I reflect my art through my experiences, thoughts and perspective on how I live my life. A picture paints eternity;
What’s the first artwork you ever sold? When I was about 9 I used to paint flowers on bottles for pocket-money.
What is the role of the artist in society? I believe that artists are the pioneers of new ideas, trends and inspiration in all spheres of life. They can ignite and show beauty where other may not necessarily see it. Ultimately, they encourage creative and genuine progress for the social mind. - TLR Anthea Delmotte @delmottea

Get up close and personal with the winemaking team in the cellar at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate and try your hand at blending your very own signature wine. Situated in the heart of the picture perfect Franschhoek Valley, Grande Provence offers small groups of adventurous wine explorers an exclusive peak into wine making complete with a hands-on blending experience. Carefully guided by Grande Provence wine ambassadors, participants in the hour-long blending session create their own unique blends from three different wine varieties. This educational blending experience is a perfect way to learn how the flavour profiles of different varieties combine to lend a unique character to the wine and what skill and knowledge is required to create a truly great blend. Once participants are happy with their personalised blend, the wine is sealed and can be taken home as a memento of an unforgettable experience. They give you one bottle of the final blend per couple but at a small amount you can however buy more of the wine. At R725 per person including a wine tasting and lunch, these blending sessions in the cellar are a great winter winelands experience. If you prefer more intense coaching in the art of blending by Grande Provence’s winemaker, the cost per person is R1 200 per person including the wine tasting and lunch. The estate suggests that you book 48 hours in advance, but in season they do get very busy - so the sooner you book then the better. WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND NAMAQUA NATIONAL PARK
South Africa has a vast system of natural reserves to protect indigenous plants, animals, landscapes and cultural heritage.
You’ll know when you’re in the Namaqua National Park - a tapestry of brilliant colours unfolds enticingly along the winding roads in August and September. Butterflies, birds and long-tongued flies dart around among the flowers, seemingly overwhelmed by the abundance and diversity.
TANKWA KAROO NATIONAL PARK
They range from the vast flagship Kruger National Park – larger than some countries – to the tiny Bontebok National Park in the Western Cape. These are managed by South Africa National Parks, established by the government in 1926 and one of the world’s leading conservation and scientific research bodies. • South African National Parks: www.sanparks.co.za National parks offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of adventure tourism opportunities including game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to cultural and historical experiences. Fifteen of South Africa’s 21 national parks offer park or camp-run accommodation. Most parks and rest-camps have retail facilities and restaurants. MOUNTAIN ZEBRA NATIONAL PARK
With its winter rainfall, Namaqualand is home to the richest bulb flora of any arid region in the world and more than a 1 000 of its estimated 3 500 plant species are found nowhere else on earth. Fields of flowers, star-studded nights, quiver trees, enormous granite outcrops and the icy Atlantic are just some of the sights to catch.
The Table Mountain National Park encompasses the incredibly scenic Table Mountain Chain stretching from Signal Hill in the north to Cape Point in the south and the seas and coastline of the peninsula. It is one of the country’s natural World Heritage Sites.
In the craggy heights of the park lurk grey rhebok. Caracal and cheetah are the predators of the park. Birds to look out for are the blue crane and Stanley’s bustard.

l Hello Cape Town August 2016
The 121 565 hectare Tankwa Karoo National Park, proclaimed in 1986, protects one of the most starkly beautiful tracts of the Tankwa Karoo and is worth visiting for its koppie-studded, moon-like landscape, diversity of succulent plants, fine Karoo birding, in particular the enigmatic Burchell’s courser. A dense population of black eagle breeding pairs is also found in the park. Situated on the southern boundary of the Northern Cape, between the Roggeveld Escarpment in the east, Cedarberg in the west, and Klein Roggeveldberge in the south, the park erupts into a dazzling display of flowering succulents after a shower.
The Namaqua National Park is on the western edge of the Northern Cape, in the world’s only arid biodiversity hotspot, and is home to the world’s smallest tortoise, the Namaqua speckled padloper. TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
The Mountain Zebra National Park, near Cradock in the Eastern Cape, is a conservation success story, saving the Mountain Zebra species from extinction. In 1937 when the park opened it had only six zebra on 1 712ha of land. These zebra didn’t survive but donations by local farmers ensured the species and the park continued. Today it boasts 370 zebra roaming in 28 412ha, kept company by black rhino, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and Cape buffalo.
The park is recognised globally for its extraordinarily rich, diverse and unique fauna and flora - with rugged cliffs, steep slopes and sandy flats. Nowhere else in the world does an area of such spectacular beauty and such rich bio-diversity exist almost entirely within a metropolitan area - the thriving and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town.
The narrow finger of land with its beautiful valleys, bays and beaches is surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the warmer waters of False Bay and has within its boundaries two world-renowned landmarks - majestic Table Mountain and the legendary Cape of Good Hope.
Only two southern African regions have been designated as Biodiversity Hotspots by Conservation International. One is the Cape Floral Kingdom, and the other the Succulent Karoo, of which Tankwa is part. There is no tourism infrastructure in the park, although there are a couple of privately operated B&Bs on the periphery of the park. There are three very historical houses offering only a roof to stay under and drinking water close by. Entrance to the park is at the discretion of park management. TSITSIKAMMA NATIONAL PARK (GARDEN ROUTE) The Tsitsikamma National Park, “the place of much water”, consists of forest, fynbos, rivers and a five-kilometre stretch into the sea, on the eastern border of the Western Cape.
Photograph by Scott Ramsay
It protects inter-tidal life, reef and deep-sea animal life, which include dolphins, porpoises and the African black oystercatcher, a red data species of bird. The Cape clawless otter resides along the park’s coastline and rivers. The Knysna loerie and the miniature blue
duiker can be seen in the forest.
- all elements that characterise the Wilderness National Park. Wilderness National Park stretches from the Touw River mouth to the Swartvlei estuary and beyond, where it links with the Goukamma Nature Reserve.
WEST COAST NATIONAL PARK Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape are the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park.
Nature trails wind through densely wooded forest and along tranquil rivers, affording you the opportunity to encounter the brilliantly coloured Knysna loerie, or one of the five kingfisher species that occur here. During spring, a carpet of flowers further enhances the verdant beauty of this national park.
Golden Gate, Mapungubwe and Marakele make up the northern cluster, which features savannah, thornveld or grasslands. Mountains are a feature of some. Mapungubwe is the location of another Unesco World Heritage Site.
Whales and dolphins can be spotted from Dolphin Point. Or, look out for the Knysna seahorse, the pansy shell, the pied kingfisher, the grey heron and the little egret.
The full article about South Africa’s national Parks was compiled by Mary Alexander for www.southafrica.info. Updated December 2015
PARK CLUSTERS South Africa’s national parks are grouped in ecological clusters. The Kruger National Park is characterised by combinations of savannah, thornveld and woodland eco-zones.
Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders, including the cape gannet, the jackass (African) penguin, flamingos, and the black harrier, from the northern hemisphere. During the spring the strandveld is filled with a tapestry of multi-hued flowers, while in the Postberg section many antelope are to be seen in a setting that is as unique as it is idyllic. WILDERNESS NATIONAL PARK
In the heart of South Africa’s famous Garden Route, a captivating world of lakes, rivers, estuaries and beaches unfolds against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountains
picturesque Garden Route on South Africa’s southern coast, and features a range of habitats including rocky shorelines, temperate forests, lakes, rivers, estuaries and fynbos. Tsitsikamma and Wilderness fall into this cluster, as does the Knysna Marine Protected Area.
The arid cluster is characterised by arid climate, sparse vegetation and sandy soils, and consists of parks in the Northern Cape - Augrabies Falls, Namaqua, Kgalagadi Transfrontier, Mokala and |Ai-|Ais Richtersveld. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape is a Unesco World Heritage site.

IN AND AROUND CAPE TOWN Table Mountain – also beloved as one of South Africa’s National Parks, is truly one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s unique eco-systems is rare in the sense that the park thrives and integrates with a pulsating and continuously developing city, Cape Town. The scenic views are breathtaking as it offers a sweeping view of Cape Town and Table Bay. Within the boundaries of Table Mountain National Park, you are able to visit the adorable Boulders Penguin Colony, or perhaps come across the mischievous Cape Peninsula Baboons on your way to the Cape of Good Hope! During Spring and Summer, you’ll have the opportunity so take-in the sights of one or more verities of the beautiful Western Cape national flower: The Protea.
The Cape cluster parks are those within the south-western reaches of the Western Cape: the Bontebok, Table Mountain, Tankwa Karoo, Agulhas and West Coast national parks. Home to the endemic Cape Floral Region, also a World Heritage Site, these parks feature mountainous, coastal, riverine or estuarine habitats. Addo, Karoo, Camdeboo and Mountain Zebra National Parks fall into the frontier cluster, which is located in the Eastern Cape. They include a variety of habitats across the parks, ranging from Nama-Karoo, grassland, montane, forest, valley thicket, fynbos and coastline. The Garden Route cluster lies in the
Surrounding the peninsula in the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Fur Seal colonies can be visited either from Hout Bay harbour, Simon’s Town, or a little bit down the shores of Gansbaai – and for those adventure seekers, the world’s best shark cage diving can be experienced in these waters!

HELLO DOCTOR Facts about sunscreens that travellers should know Ultraviolet radiation consists of 3 wavebands: - UVC 100 - 280nm which is blocked by the Ozone layer - UVB 280 - 320nm and - UVA 320 - 400NM

According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR].

Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.
Experience the drama of that night in fully restored operating theatres where the surgery took place. A fully guided 2 hour tour describes the electrifying events with the help of life-sized silicone models and replicas of important scenes.
Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide:

On the Market Support front, the store is one of the ways in which the CCDI, as a sector development agency supports enterprise development by facilitating access to market opportunities locally and internationally for small creative businesses. The CCDI store offers a variety of local designer makers an opportunity to showcase and sell their wares. It is a collective shop that gives producers a chance to test their products in a retail environment. As this is still a product testing platform, they will add a few new products every couple of months and since it is a place for emerging designers you have a good chance to get yourself a one-of-a-kind find!
The upcoming few months lends to an arrange of exciting young producers & designers: Sikho Mququ of Ckho Ceramiques, Samrid Mhlungu of Yenza Design, Roche.Recycle.Relove; Natascha van Niekerk; Indwe Designs and Made in Z-A, Bookha Creation and GoRD. Adding variety to the offerings in the store there is iced coffee from Swart and various teas from Enmasse Tea Merchants for the beverage connoisseurs. Woodstock-based designer, Cameron Barnes, who specialises in creating handmade custom-designed furniture was the shop-fitter who helped to create a fresh and dynamic new look for the store. I decided to study Naturopathy - little did I know my whole life would change in an instant when I discovered the most amazing performance of healing bodywork. This was my turning point: Hawaiian temple massage. For the next 25 years I pursued this path and began to work internationally, writing 4 books in the process.
I returned home to Cape Town in 2008, the wild passion & beauty of this country sparked my artistic career to new heights. At the young age of 60 I am living my dream. I have my own gallery that showcases my works. It is also a venue for private dance classes in which I collaborate with a master Kizomba dancer, Braulio Faria, and as he dances with his students I paint the action. “To surrender to the music, to the dance, and to feel that passion flow through you is what the dance art experience is about Tel: 0740517433 www.leeorahhursky.com Gallery 301. WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. Tel: 021 418 3823 www.aquarium.co.za CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.

the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.
