Jonathan Roxmouth and Weslee Swain Lauder star in this spoof where all the residents of the Mandacrest estate travel from the moors of England to the tombs of Egypt and back again, encountering along their way a host of vampires, werewolves, mummies and all manner of things that go bump in the night. With Gothic plot turns thrown out like thumbtacks on the road and a stage packed full of outrageous sets and costumes.
Theatre on The Bay, 3 - 19 Aug, Tickets R120 - R180 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi ABFAB DRAG Absolutely Fabulously DRAG. Cape Town has a scintillating drag tradition that dates back to the Thirties, especially in vibrant District Six. Today the pageants, the parties, the hair dressing salons and the fabulous drag queen shows still flourish across the city. However, it’s often hosted in backwood clubs, catering to a select few who know where to find them. The Absolutely Fabulous Drag Show endeavors to put the crème de la crème of drag on centre stage at the Artscape. With fine feathers preened, false eyelashes fluttering and sequins glittering, the fiercely feminine/masculine are gathering to celebrate the world of “lip sync”, ambiguous seduction and gender identification. The enigmatic and hilarious Soli Philander delves into his own wardrobe to reveal the rich tapestry of the sometimes outrageous characters from way back, while top class acts like Vida Fantabisher and a host of drag divas brings us into present day glory. Camillo Lombard maintains a strict tempo while Basil Appollis stiches it all together and cracks the designer whip as director. new stand-up comedy show. 10 years after matriculating, Dalin is struggling to adapt to the concept of adulting. No one warned him about it. His Life Orientation teacher forgot tell him that he’d have to pay tax, parallel park in on-comming traffic and that data would be this expensive. Friendships and relationships have changed. His friends are getting married and going to Stodels on the weekend while he’s figuring out that Tinder is not that beneficial when you staying at home with your parents. One day while playing PokemonGo, he realised that it was time to grow up.

CAPE TOWN GOLF FESTIVAL
With more than a handful of world class golf courses on Cape Town door step, some would say it is long overdue that we should have our own Golf Festival. Lucky for us, Fedhasa Cape, the prime representative and voice for the South African Hospitality Industry, with the encouragement of Cape Town’s Mayor, Patricia De Lille and alongside Wesgro, Cape Town Tourism and Accelerate Cape Town joined forces to deliver The Cape Town Golf Festival. According to Jeff Rosenberg, Chairman of Fedhasa Cape, this initiative was as a result of the initial discussions that took place between the Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia De Lille, and Fedhasa, in an attempt to create new events to be held particularly in the winter months. We will have four Golf days together to enjoy and to experience the Cape countryside. Tournament Director, Reg Ferreira, comments: “The beautiful locations - stunning sea views from 8
l Hello Cape Town August 2017
both the Milnerton and Clovelly golf courses, the iconic Table Mountain within good sight from Milnerton, to the delights of green vineyards around Durbanville – are bound to appeal to golfers from all over the world.” The Cape Town Golf Festival is a prime opportunity to showcase that outdoor activities are just as enjoyable during winter as during any other time of the year. According to Enver Duminy of Cape Town Tourism, the view that the winter months are undesirable for a visit to Cape Town is misguided. He explains that, “Firstly, if one looks at the average number of days of rain during the winter months, it’s clear we do not have constant rain and gloomy days during the cooler months of June, July and August. In fact, statistics show that the average number of days of rain is about nine per month, which means that a visitor could well enjoy a week’s stay in the city without feeling a drop.”
Tournament will be played at 4 different golf clubs and will be accompanied and pampered by 4 different renowned and awarded wine estates: MONDAY 21st August ROYAL CAPE GOLF CLUB Wine tasting by STEENBERG WINE ESTATE Competition: 4 BALL Alliance
TUESDAY 22nd August DURBANVILLE GOLF CLUB Wine Tasting by DIEMERSDAL WINE ESTATE Competition: 4 BALL Alliance
THURSDAY 24th August CLOVELLY GOLF CLUB Wine Tasting by CAPE POINT VINEYARDS Competition: 4 BBB STABLEFORD
FRIDAY 25th August MILNERTION GOLF CLUB Wine tasting by GROOT CONSTANTIA Competition: SINGLE STABLEFORD
It is not necessary to evade the Western Cape when the season isn’t, by institutionalized standards, providing the perfect weather. It is a simple mind set change that you can have fun and long lasting experiences here in either situation. In essence, The Cape is great during the warm summer months, but The Cape is also exceptional during the winter months.
“There’s no question that we have to continue to address the negative impact of seasonality”, comments Cape Town’s Mayor, Patricia De Lille. “This is why the City has established a partnership that brings together a number of organisations with a focus on promoting tourism in the city. Fedhasa, Wesgro, Cape Town Tourism and Accelerate Cape Town are working together to find ways to combat the impact of seasonality on the local tourist industry.”

our cup of tea
To celebrate Women’s Month, we popped into La Parada in Constantia Nek who now offers a charming High Tea in the tranquil and sophisticated setting of this iconic destination. Guests can enjoy the perfect cup of tea surrounded by the peaceful beauty and commanding views of the rolling Constantiaberg mountain range from the wall-to-ceiling windows. The décor is simple and understated keeping the original form and structure of this Heritage building. White interiors with rustic stone walls, floors and herringbone brick work simply to amplify the original space. The restaurant is the perfect size and venue to throw the perfect tea party for your bridesmaids, or your mother, favourite cousin or best friends. It’s the ideal meeting spot for special birthdays, pre-wedding parties, kitchen teas, baby showers or just a day out to treat yourself. While you feast on the beautiful platters, savour the views of the wine valleys in the distance or step out into the herb garden which supplies the kitchen. The delectable new menu has two simple options to choose and the generous portions make it ideal to share with your favourite friends. The Petit and the Deluxe: The ‘Petit Platter’ has small scones with cream and jam, delicate sandwiches and three different tarts: cheesecake, lemon and dark chocolate. It comes with two pots of tea or coffee. The platter is R300.00 for 2 people. The generous ‘Deluxe Platter’ is a three-tiered delight of scones, sandwiches, two types of samosas, quiche, red velvet cake, carrot cake, lime panna cotta and also comes with two pots of tea or coffee, La Parada will happily oblige. The Deluxe platter is R520 for 2 people – if you would prefer to add bubbles, it will be R640.00 for 2 people. Each tasty treat is specially made in the Harbour House kitchen, so prebookings are essential. High Tea is served from Monday to Saturday from 2pm - 5pm at Constantia Nek only. Other times can be accommodated subject to availability and booking. This delightful setting can seat 80 -100 people. Of course, should you wish to wine and dine, as a sister restaurant of the original Harbour House in Kalk Bay and V&A Waterfront, it sticks to a winning formula of fresh seafood served with a gourmet spin. Share a legendary sushi, shellfish or seafood platter with calamari, mussels, prawns, crayfish and line fish, or opt for the ever-popular Mozambican-style peri-peri tiger prawns.

a whale of a time They visit the shores of the Western Cape every year as spring kicks in. The town of Hermanus, located on the cliffs above Walker Bay, gives spectators uninterrupted vistas of both the interactions between mature whales and the playful encounters between their youngsters. The Hermanus Whale Festival, taking place this year from 29 September- 1 October, is the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa. It celebrates seasonality and the circle of life on the water level and up on the grounds. It can be enjoyed as a long day trip from Cape Town or better yet as an overnight stay. The festival offers food experiences, a large range of crafters, sport events, kids’ entertainment, a Music stage with over 20 artists performing over the festival, Marine ECO Village and a Vintage Car show. The full programme is available on the events’ website: hermanuswhalefestival.co.za If you plan to be in Cape Town but still not certain you can make it to Hermanus in those specific dates, you can still view the magnificent creatures and although the celebrations won’t be in place locals will greet you with a smile. The most scenic Clarence Drive leads to the Kogelberg Biosphere, recognised by UNESCO for the diversity of its fybos vegetation. Continue past Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond to Hawston, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai to experience the magic of the Cape Whale Coast. The main towns of the area are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai; but the Cape Whale Coast is in fact made up of a collection of villages, farms, rivers, bays, coves and valleys – each filled with its own special magic. Explore the whales, sharks, wine routes, fynbos, birding, golf courses, penguins, mountain biking, hiking trails and adventure activities in our beautiful region, the Cape Whale Coast. www.whalecoast.info tourism@overstrand.gov.za

l Hello Cape Town August 2017
The local craft market is open every day and the town itself, located in the heart of the Overberg region is a comfortable base to explore wine estate that produces cool climate wines, defined more loosely as where the weather both limits grape ripening and offers the threat of serious damage to the vine in the winter. What this means is that the vine grower and winemaker have to be even savvier to produce the wonderfully elegant wines that are increasingly popular with consumers the world over. The Wine Village, one of the famous local wine shops in South Africa, located on the R320 just before you reach Hermanus, is a good and knowledgeable place to start (www.winevillage.co.za).

COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player inraising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.
Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.
After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

south african design written by Genevieve Putter, photographs supplied. As part of the ‘slow fashion’ movement, new Cape Town based women’s clothing brand, Jota-Kena is all about an ethical approach to fashion. The vision of sisters, Tanith and Keziah Swinford, the brand’s core is comprised of a lot of love, respect, and all round awesomeness for each other, their employees, what they do and the beautiful pieces they make. Describing the Jota-Kena woman, the sisters say, ‘She cares about processes and people, not just the piece of clothing and she appreciates quality’. Jota-Kena is the real deal and fast populating the wardrobes of the city’s fashionista (jet-setters), here’s why. WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH FAMILY? Keziah: I love working with family. I believe it is a rare privilege that should not be taken for granted. We have always been very close-knit so it has been easy to work with each other. Open communication is also something our family has been very good at and this has definitely made working together easy as we have an inherent understanding of each other and the way we work, it just feels natural. We take what we do seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. There’s always fun & laughter (and coffee) in Jota-Kena’s work environment, which we believe is very important. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FABRICS? Tanith: All Jota-Kena garments are made from natural fabrics such as tencel, rayon and cotton, which are biodegradable and planet-friendly. To us, planet-friendly refers to sustainability… So fabrics derived from eco-friendly resources, such as sustainably grown fiber crops or recycled materials (for example, tencel is
made from recycled wood pulp). In starting out, we purchased everything from local suppliers however, when it came to the origin and conditions of production, these were not always traceable. For this reason, we are now very intentional about our fabrics being ethical and sustainable from farm to finish, which is why they are sourced from Europe, India and some local mills. YOU USE THE TERM SLOW FASHION, PLEASE ELABORATE? Keziah: Slow fashion is about being intentional and focusing on quality rather than quantity. Instead of being driven by fleeting trends, slow-fashion is more focused on being ethically and environmentally conscious. Garments are crafted and designed to be quality, timeless investment pieces. It’s a concept that ties in perfectly with our mantra “comfortable, conscious, intentional”. TELL US ABOUT THE NEW DENIM RANGE? Tanith: We’ve been working on it for six months – testing different washes, visiting our supplier, perfecting the patterns and handdrawing artworks for embroidery customization, so it’s very much a passion project and we’re really excited to launch it! Our denim is made with eco-friendly cotton and is very much slow-fashion focused, with a turnaround time of 4-6 weeks due to all the processes involved. Jota-Kena’s bespoke denim customization is an exciting journey whereby clients get to be part of the process. We start with a consultation, walking you through the different steps: starting with a choice of fit then the wash and finally the exciting part of personalized embroidery and buttons. We have four embroidery categories, all done in natural threads, with many possibilities and combinations. More at www.jotakena.com

Fact File Cape Minstrel Carnival In Cape Town, 2 January is known as Tweede Nuwejaar (Second New Year) and is celebrated with the Cape Minstrel Parade, a joyful procession that culminates in a song-and-dance competition at the Cape Town Stadium. On this day, Capetonians and visitors pay tribute to those South Africans who originate from slaves. The parade along the city streets is a highlight of the Minstrel Carnival that happens over this period, a month-long series of colourful events, festivals and competitions all over the city.

Table Mountain 1 Flat-topped Table Mountain, which consists largely of shale, sandstone and granite, is the focus of the Table Mountain National Park. Today it towers 1,086m above Table Bay, but wind and rain over the millennia mean that it is only a fifth of its original height, and is still being eroded. The slopes boast a network of footpaths and hiking routes that wind through a landscape inhabited by a variety of small wildlife, including dassies.
Did you know? The cable cars of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company offer a 360-degree view of the mountain and city.

District Six With the formation of the Group Areas Act of apartheid, the people of District Six, once home to many different races, were relocated to outlying areas in the 1980s. Other than places of worship and the ruins of homes long gone, little remains of the original settlement after bulldozers tore most of it down. There has since been some redevelopment, but the District Six Museum remains dedicated to the memory of the original inhabitants.

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,
especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
