It is not necessary to evade the Western Cape when the season isn’t, by institutionalized standards, providing the perfect weather. It is a simple mind set change that you can have fun and long lasting experiences here in either situation. In essence, The Cape is great during the warm summer months, but The Cape is also exceptional during the winter months.
“There’s no question that we have to continue to address the negative impact of seasonality”, comments Cape Town’s Mayor, Patricia De Lille. “This is why the City has established a partnership that brings together a number of organisations with a focus on promoting tourism in the city. Fedhasa, Wesgro, Cape Town Tourism and Accelerate Cape Town are working together to find ways to combat the impact of seasonality on the local tourist industry.”

Hello Cape Town August 2018
WHEN IN DOUBT SAY DARLING After a sold-out season at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Studio, the newest Pieter-Dirk Uys show will be presented at the Fugard Theatre in August. Sometimes politics repeats itself, not only taking history and turning it into farce, but taking farce and turning into the fake news which is now called entertainment. Pieter-Dirk Uys is sorting out 40 years of distress, disguise and disgust: from apartheid to tripartite, from amandla to Nkandla. Wigs, glasses, wagging fingers, toyi-toyis, red berets, trump cards of madness, icons and aikonas. From Bezuidenhouts, Raubenheimers and Ramaphosas to Altzheimers. At a time when a casual greeting or embrace can be seen as racist or harassment, the advice is simple: when in doubt say darling. If you can’t remember their names, just say darling. If you get lost along the road to somewhere, simply ask for Darling. He did it, and now Pieter-Dirk Uys also lives in Darling. Join him and many darlings in this minefield of hashtags and hate speech, on an exciting walk to the edge of the next cliff, when the end of the world seems nigh. It used to be called a sunset but here’s a secret: the sun will also rise tomorrow, darling. The Fugard Theatre, 7 - 25 Aug, Tickets R140 - R160 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi ENDGAME Nothing makes more sense than to have Samuel Beckett’s brilliant play about senselessness, performed by two ludicrously long-awaited clowns joining
forces- Andrew Buckland and Rob van Vuuren-under the direction of Sylvaine Strike in all her madness and magic. Furthermore, none other than two theatre icons -Antoinette Kellerman and Soli Philander play in the supporting roles, and together, this company is offering you a journey into the dark heart of the post-apocalyptic circus that is ENDGAME. Endgame explores with precisely crafted eloquence the relationship of oppressor-subject; boss clown and underdog and in some contexts father and son; parent and child. All of these are either delicately or robustly disembowelled with the rhythmical precision evocative of a Magnus Opus. The laughter triggered when watching Endgame allows its audience to come to terms with the horror and ecstasy of existence all at once. Today the pageants, the parties, the hairdressing salons and the fabulous drag queen shows still flourish across the city. vegetable and herb garden on the farm, farm-baked breads, pastries and cakes. The South African table is a tutored experience at the kitchen table with the head chef. It presents guests with the opportunity to taste authentic South African dishes and to learn about the food heritage while sharing a meal. If you have the time, the Cooking Demonstration followed by dinner will ensure you a treasured memories for years to come.
Grande Provence
Chamonix Wine Estate combines wine tasting with a 2 hour game drive in their wildlife reserve. Racine, the estate’s restaurant is the culinary birth place of one of South Africa’s known chefs, Reuben Riffle. While relocating and rebuilding his own establishment in the village, he came back to create simple sophisticated bistro style cuisine of international standards. Some of the exquisite gastronomy is available on-the-go at the deli. The estate also offers a series of lodges and cottages. Dieu Donne’s scenic location overlooks the Franschhoek valley from its visitor’s facility. Roca restaurant serves Mediterranean flavours and is a perfect location to enjoy one of the most magnificent vistas in the Cape Winelands.
Rickety Bridge
The Franschhoek Cellar is a favourite wine tasting and pairing venue. In addition to their own wines they stock and serve partner wines like Brampton and Bellingham. The Platform Bar & Bistro is located on the old railway platform and was re-modelled to mimic a train carriage that overlooks the mountains and vineyards. Rickety Bridge wine experiences include tastings, Wine Blendings and Cellar Tours that can be arranged by appointment. The estate restaurant, Paulina’s, open for lunch 7 days a week, features a variety of half and full portions of bistro-style menu that allows diners the opportunity to sample and share dishes. Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate is a local landmark. The tastings, tours and wine blending experiences are complimented by an art gallery and the estate’s shop that stocks fine African artefacts, photography and smaller collectables. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, for lunch and dinner. The estate’s picnic grounds and basket contents are tasty and picture perfect.

THE TREASURES OF
KIRSTENBOSCH Documented history of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is traced back to the 1700’s, enabling us to apprehend the National Treasure statues it holds and to appreciate its acclaimed international recognition 3 centuries down the timeline path. On top of being a must do destination for travelers and visitors, this icon serves a handful of opportunities to create majestic and memorable, private or corporate events. The Manor House, Built in 1914, is located up on the west slops, overlooking the Proteas sections, the rest of the garden and the Constantia Valley farther down. The house was refurbished to the highest standard and can accommodated either individual guests or a full party. The adjusted lawns makes it a fairytale scenery for intimate events. The house also include a meeting room equipped with audio-visual & sound system. The Marquee Lawn is situated near the Centre for Home Gardening and the reputed Kirstenbosch Tea Room at Gate 2, against the stunning backdrop of Castle Rock and Fernwood Peak. 2 leveled lawn areas are the space for big events of up to 1000 people standing, overlooking the Peninsula Garden.

l Hello Cape Town August 2018
The Conference Centre at the main gate enjoys its location by offering large windows that opens to the Camphor Avenue, a signatory feature of Kirstenbosch. Summer or winter, the leafy avenue shades the center and provides a one-off-a-kind backdrop to any event. It is for that reason this venue is popular with both local event planners and international corporates. Known, local artistic societies runs their annual exhibition in the center, often open to the general public for free so make sure to check and see if your visit to the garden falls on one of those lucky days. Lastly, the Concert Stage, earning its reputation by proudly and constantly holding the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts series, is open for concert hiring and can be fenced from the rest of the garden. In addition it hosts a few international acts every year and the grassy slant gives a good view over the large stage.

Saturday goers have the choice between The Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock or the Oranjezicht City Farm – Market on Granger bay, next to the V&A Waterfront. The Neighbourgoods Market is open from 9:00 to 15:00 every Saturday. They cater for all food choices. Halaal, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten and Sugar free, Lactose - Intolerant, Raw and Organic food preferences are all represented. Housed in the historic sky-lit warehouse of The Old Biscuit Mill, it is a showcase of Cape Town’s finest micro-merchants, designer-makers, specialty-producers and food-alchemists.
Oranjezicht City Farm
The Oranjezicht City Farm – Market started as a market day for the produce of the actual City Farm that is located up in the Oranjezicht neighbourhood, down the slops of Table Mountain. Organic, seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs are collected and picked in the days prior to the market. From this small, local initiative, the market grew to include bread and other baking goods, organic dairy, free-range eggs, honey, muesli and a long list artisanal, small, local and homemade in scale products that gives the market its hearty vibe. A dedicated section in the market hosts a big offering of different food stalls of local and international flavors. This favorite holds long tables and benches that creates a communal atmosphere throughout the markets’ sections.

The Cape’s Secret Season constantly offers unexpected surprises from mogul chefs and iconic wine estates. This month we are happy to share with you that Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek offers a winter gesture for its diners: a wide range of small plate options of some of Chef Guy Bennett’s most popular dishes. Choose any combination of three plates from grilled linefish, a warm goat cheese salad, spiced crispy squid, low & slow beef short rib, a creamy risotto with pancetta, soy braised pork, artisanal cheeses, as well as a dark chocolate fondant to hit your sweet spot. Your trio of small plates is accompanied by a

tasting glass of Grande Provence wine. This menu, served from 15:00 to 19:00 daily, offers locals and visitors a taste of the stunning Grande Provence winter specials and is ideal for wrapping up a day in the valley. For those who look for a more comprehensive dining experience, Chef Guy recommends to add to the small plates menu a few extras such as freshly shucked oysters or dreamy desserts. Chef Guy and his team love playing with their food and change their dishes constantly by incorporating new ingredients and produce that become
available as the seasons change so variations to the menu above are more than likely to occur. The Restaurant at Grande Provence is open daily for lunch and dinner. The small plates menu is available at R220 per person for 3 plates of your choice. To book your table, call Tel: (021) 876 8600 or email reservations@grandeprovence. co.za. Grande Provence is en-route 4 of the 6 Franschhoek Wine Tram lines, the Blue, Green, Red & Yellow. Still, sticking to the time schedule doesn’t guarantee a seat at the restaurant. Pre-booking is well advised.

what to see
FLOWERS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE An ocean of colour – fields covered in a sea of purple, yellow, orange, blue and white. This is what Spring at the West Coast is all about. About 2 hours drive north of Cape Town, up the R27, you’ll reach the West Coast National Park. This area of South Africa receives little rain throughout the year but after the winter rains from May to July/August, the normally dry landscape becomes a carpet of wild flowers with vibrant bands of Gousblomme and Vygies, as well as Nemesias, Lachenalias, Babiana and Ixias. It is a world know spectacle for flora and nature lovers. Two main areas are easily accessible for a day trip from Cape Town: Clanwilliam and the Cedarberg Mountains inland, The Sandveld & the West Coast along the ocean. At the foothills of the Cedarberg lies the town of Clanwilliam and a number of flower routes. These include the Bieudouw valley. Which can be the highlight of any flower tour in a good year – the Boskloof valley or Nardouwsberg.

If you pick your dates right, you can also visit the Clanwilliam Flower Show held between 24 August to 2 September this year. Every year about 400 species from 32 families are exhibited in their typical setting at the Clanwilliam Flower Show. Here the flowers botanical names, as well as their tongue-twisting local names, are displayed. For more information and last minute updates it is best to browse clanwilliamwildflowershow.co.za From the Cederberg you can head west to the ocean through an area known as the Sandveld. Continue south along the West Coast Road (R27) via the picturesque fishing village of Paternoster with its Columbine Nature Reserve. Then head along to the West Coast National Park. Along this coastal strip, you find the strandveld of salvias and showy daisies. Within the West Coast National Park lies the Postberg Nature Reserve. This reserve boasts the greatest variety of birds,
game and Sandveld flowers in the Western Cape. This special section of the park is only open during August to October. The Darling Flower show held 14 – 16 September, is a concentrated show of the beauty that surrounds. Detailed information is available on www.darlingwildflowers.co.za
FLOWER VIEWING TIPS Flower Viewing Tips – The best time for viewing is between 10:30 and 16:00 during the warmest part of the day when the flowers are open. – The day temperature must be at least 18 degrees Celsius. – Sunny days are best for the opening of flowers. Rainy or overcast weather is not ideal so avoid disappointment. Plan to visit other sights on such days. – Flowers face the sun and are therefore best displayed when traveling with the sun behind you. Viewers are advised to travel north soon after departure and then to do most flower-viewing by moving in a southerly direction. – When taking a circular route, try traveling in a westerly direction in the morning, followed by a southerly one and finally an easterly one. – Get out of the car and walk amongst the flowers but

make sure to also look for the delicate, smaller species. – Tread lightly and carefully so as not to trample plants unnecessarily. – Please don’t pick any flowers. – Many outlying areas do not have mobile phone reception. – Make sure that you set off on your journey with a full tank as fuel is not readily available everywhere. It is thus also important that you take your own drinking water. For a current update about what and where to see follow the West Coast news on www.capewestcoast.org/news

recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.
AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great
White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!
CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance
• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
SAFARI
Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
