Atang Tshikare’s debut into sculpture is an exciting exploration of form and function. Atang Tshikare premiered his first bronze works early this month with Southern Guild at the annual Design Miami. The self-developed multidisciplinary artist’s work is a combination of geometric patterns and multiple mediums of sculptures based on his fantastical narratives. Both Le bone Lebone (they saw the light) and Maotwana Finyela form his debut into bronze sculpture. Hailing from Bloemfontein, Tshikare began his full-time art career in 2010, founding Zabalazaa Designs, an open platform for cocreation and innovation applying creative design-led thinking. He has worked on commissions for brands such as Adidas Originals, Nando’s and JWT Marketing. The curious sculptures, that also function as lights, form the central feature of Southern Guild’s installation at Design Miami. Le bone Lebone (they saw the light) is named after Tshikare’s tale of the same name, where a one-eyed giraffe-like creature (a source of great light) radiates a strong force within others, keeping them wandering in search of this light, a place of peace. Maotwana Finyela is an exotic animal with more legs than usual, which produce a melodic sound as they come into contact with each other. These sounds are said to be so soothing that they equate to the healing powers of stars, the ocean and hot springs. When ill, one searches for Maotwana Finyela, and stays in its company until healed. These imaginative, future-primal creatures are slowly growing into a greater family, so keep an eye out for more. we’ve seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch has hit the Mother City! Staged at the new prestigious Gate69 Theatre on Bree Street, the genrebender, created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, tells the story of a fictional rock band, fronted by an East German transgender singer named Hedwig. As they tour the United States in a quest for love and glory, Hedwig regales the audience with tales of her escape from oppressive East Berlin, and her life since as a German emigrant in the States. Hello Cape Town grabs a cuppa with the stars: Paul du Toit (The Rocky Horror Show, Same Time Next Year, Binnelanders, Backstage) and Genna Galloway (Grease, Showboat, Noah of Cape Town) to discuss their roles in the performance.

Describe yourselves in 3 sentences? G: I am a passionate actress and I love teaching my students at the Waterfront Theatre School. I love Cape Town. I love wine and food - I’m totally a foodie! *giggles* P: I still have my appendix. I love food – especially when I have grown it myself. I like the outdoors - and the indoors – but that’s usually when I’m in a theatre. Paul, talk to us about Hedwig as a character and the challenges you personally face playing the role? I’ve been in love with the character Hedwig for about 16 years now. It was one of the CDs I’ve owned for many years and had played in isolation - only seeing the film later when it came out on circuit. When I watched the film, it was as if suddenly the puzzle pieces fit together. The performance blew me away. Honestly, it was never a dream of mine to play the part, because for me I might as well have dreamt to fly. I never thought It could be done. In playing Hedwig, many people comment on the sexuality and the drag side – I’ve been asked my sexual preference and whether drag is my choice – which to me doesn’t ‘make’ the character. I happen to be straight and dress in drag for the production. For me as an actor, I focus on the idiosyncrasies of the character. The internal. I try find Hedwig’s humanity. The external is just as mask like the mask we all wear. The fact he dresses the way he does on the outside is merely an external factor as part of his circumstance. We all have our ways we shift our external characteristics to suit situations. Hedwig is just deeply damaged goods – physically abused and then abandoned by his father and a loveless & emotionally abusive relationship with his mother. He spent his life looking for love. The truth is, the more you look, the harder it is to find, the more you push it away. It becomes a vicious circle of pain. We can see this in his relationship with his partner Yitzhak – there is this consistent emotional abuse. What is difficult about playing this piece is trying to hold an audience for 1.5 hours with this character who really only redeeming feature is acerbic wit. On the surface, Hedwig is a pretty offensive human being! She is anti-Semitic, she’s abusive, she mocks anyone with any kind of disability - be it mental or physical. I need to work within that framework and still have an audience that is sympathetic towards her by the end of the play. I also need to maintain the audience throughout, keep their attention – that’s the real challenge. Genna, Talk to us about Yitzhak? How did you get into being a male character and the relationship you have with Hedwig? I didn’t know it would be a role I’d be so passionate to play, not being as familiar as Paul was, I was learning as I was growing into Yitzhak, truly getting a feel throughout the rehearsal process. It only really clicked when I had my costume on - the wig, the make-up and yes, the fake penis! *laughs* It gave me a different centre of gravity. I was then able to characterise him and I could feel the transformation. I spent a lot of time observing men and how they sit and walk. They are a lot more ‘grounded’ in stance and seating than women are. In regards to accent, I worked with a friend of mine who is an accent coach and I also looked up actors on YouTube. Yitzhak as a character is fundamentally like Hedwig - both come from a lot of pain and synonymously is searching for love. He is

totally in love with Hedwig knowing that she will never reciprocate it in the way he would want, yet he stays in this toxic relationship in the hope she will change. The same vicious cycle Paul described. Hedwig was his escape but he is now emotionally and physically stuck – it is also true that Hedwig has somewhat kidnapped him by withholding his passport. When it comes down to it, the musical recognises the humanity of 2 damaged people searching for the same thing within each other, but needing to first find it is within themselves. What do you both understand by the term “Angry Inch”? G: Literally, Hedwig is a reluctant transgender and suffers botched sex-change, thus an ‘inch’ P: Metaphorically & metaphysically it says a lot about Hedwig in the juxtaposition of the 2 terms. Where he is angry, but it is an inch. A little bit. He isn’t man, he isn’t woman. He isn’t happy, he isn’t sad. He says a couple of times in the play, “I laugh, ‘coz I cry if I don’t” He is in a constant limbo of being almost something, but still an echo of what he was before. If not an actor/actress, what profession would choose to occupy? G: A Psychologist. Psychology has always been a passion of mine. P: I actually went for an aptitude test once in which the results that were ‘inconclusive’. They gave me this book and asked me to page through it to pick a career? I settled on a Life Saver because it sounded cool. The women simply responded that my academic results were promising and why not consider the Priesthood? The meeting ended shortly after with the results still being inconclusive… *laughs* Give us a fun fact people might not be aware of? G: I hate coriander and I can do handstand push ups. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. For Gabrielle Kool launching a proudly South African swimwear label was a no-brainer for the Durban native, having grown up with sunkissed skin, salt-watered hair and sand between her toes. However, as the fashion graduate tells us, designing swimwear is a whole different school of fish to fashion design for many reasons. Now based in Cape Town with her atelier at Woodstock’s Masons Press, she tells us about her brand and shares her insight into choosing the right swimsuit, which doesn’t include looking online or in the pages of magazines. Tell us about Gabrielle Swimwear. Gabrielle Swimwear was developed from a passion for swimwear and all things related. After completing my National Diploma in Fashion from the Durban University of Technology and some extensive travelling, I returned home filled with inspiration and noticed there was a serious gap in the South African market regarding swimwear. Apart from your surf brands and cheap, poor quality Asian imports there was not much selection available. I started out sewing bikinis from my bedroom at home and slowly grew from there. How different is designing swimwear to clothing in general? Because it’s such a personal and intimate item, it’s all about the fit and comfort of a suit, which are the most important qualities to pay attention to in the design process. Because they are ‘smaller’ items, it’s also very important not to over design and I therefore focus on more of the finer, subtle details when designing.

What has been your most popular design? My most popular design would have to be my strelitzia print suits. This is a very recognisible, indigenous flower in South Africa and people have fallen in love with the print, as have I. It’s such a unique, interesting flower with amazing hues and really stands out from any other floral designs. What tips do you have for women wanting to find the perfect fitting swimsuit? I would say try them on. The only way to find your perfect fit is to try as many different styles as you can and not just the ones you think you want - don’t be fooled by instagram model pics! So many woman fall in love with a style they see online on flawless, edited models and then get bitterly disappointed when they see how it looks on them. You have to know your body type and choose the right style to compliment your best features and flatter the ones you feel less comfortable in. Test a few styles out when trying on and you might be surprised to find the one you thought you’d never wear looks and feels amazing on you. Your favourite swimwear trends for Summer 16/17? Definitely the return of the one piece! I’m so excited that more and more ladies of different ages and sizes are considering onepieces this season as they can be really sexy. I am especially loving the backless designs, as they are a simple and elegant design that most woman will feel beautiful and comfortable in.

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.
The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.
Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.
The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.
The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land
Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR]. Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma
The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring. Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide: • It should be 2mg/cm2 • Two tablespoons for an average person should be applied 20 minutes prior to exposure and be reapplied every few hours or after swimming, even if it is stated to be waterproof. • This equates to slightly more than half a teaspoon to each of the head and neck, right arm and left arm. Use slightly more than a teaspoon on each of the Chest and Tummy, the Back as well as the Left and Right leg! People should still only expose their skin to as much sun as they would without protection.
