TWELFTH NIGHT
BLOOD BROTHERS
Time for a `Feast of Fools`; time for the `Lords of Misrule` to create general mischief; time for a reversal of order and the smoking out of evil spirits. On the imagined island of Illyria, off the coast of Africa, a fresh take on Shakespeare`s unfading classic comes to life as the shipwrecked twins, Viola and Sebastian, cause mayhem with the locals. Music, Food and Love create whirlwinds of delight in this merry-go-round of romance, pranks and masquerades.
A haunting rags to riches tragedy of our times. A Liverpool woman with numerous children to support surrenders one of her new born twins to the childless woman she cleans for. The boys grow up streets apart, never learning the truth but becoming firm friends and falling in love with the same girl. One prospers while the other falls on hard times. A narrator warns that a price has to be paid for separating twins. Woven carefully with moving scenes and songs, this musical showed for 25 years on the West End.

The confrontation between two revolutionary thinkers: Jean-Paul Marat, a leading figure of the French Revolution, and the Marquis de Sade, who completely lacks faith in humanity and its capacity to progress, takes place against the backdrop of a theatre production by the inmates of the Charenton asylum. Under the direction of the Marquis de Sade himself, who has been imprisoned for blasphemy and pornography, the inmates play out JeanPaul Marat’s famous assassination in the bath by Charlotte Corday.

l Hello Cape Town February 2017
Revolution and rage, asylum and stage – Peter Weiss’s play is simultaneously a historic philosophical reflection and a crazed theatrical spectacle. Baxter Theatre, 25 Feb - 25 Mar, Tickets R130 - R160 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi CHAPTER 2 SECTION 9 South Africa appears to be a little oasis of progressiveness on the African continent, however, when laws change, it doesn’t mean that attitudes on the ground do. The LGBTI community is still subjected to discrimination and hate crime; so-coined corrective rape of lesbians is still rife. Chapter 2, Section 9, teases apart the complication of sexual identity, from how one’s parents, grandparents, siblings and children respond to it, to grappling with church values and ‘unafricaness’. The play, based on interviews with more than fifty lesbian women and their families, is a clear message with a cry, a laugh and
a smile, that everyone deserves to be respected for who they are. Coffee lovers have always had their favourite haunts; some of these may be a well-kept secret by the locals. Well the secret is out, thanks to a chance comment by an English visitor, who was so enchanted with the Mother City and its vibrant coffee culture that she longed for a guide to show her the way. This book shares the location of some of Cape Town’s most appealing coffee shops and each section is prefaced with a map to help you plot your route. Each entry also includes information about parking, wifi and the type of coffee served, as well as some suggestions on what to do in the area.

PROJECTS FACES OF NEED PENGUIN PROJECT Our multi-award winning project to research and curb the worrisome decline in the African Penguin population on Dyer Island (90% decline in 30 years) is aimed at protecting these endangered species indigenous. We have manufactured and placed more than 800 superficial nests on the island and at other breeding colonies to provide them with sheltered homes. To get involved, you can purchase your own nest! You will receive a pendant and deed to your ‘property’. FACES OF NEED SHARK PROJECT We research the feeding, breeding, migrating and behavioural habits as well as various other aspects of the Great Whites by recording sightings, tagging, dorsal fin identification and taking thousands of photos for an ongoing data base in conjunction with various national and international academic and research institutions. CLEAN MARINE ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN This project supports recycling and is aimed at involving local schools and the community in beach-cleanups, marine education and placing unique fishing line bin disposal units along the coast. WHALE AND DOLPHIN DISENTANGLEMENTS Dyer Island Cruises owner Wilfred Chivell is part of the SA Whale Disentanglement Network, led by Oceans & Coasts, and is specially trained and equipped to handle entangled whales and dolphins. Where whales or dolphins are stranded in the area, Chivell and one of the biologists will attend to do sampling and measurement for the Mammal Research Institute of the University of Pretoria and O&C. DYER ISLAND CONSERVATION TRUST The Dyer Island Conservation Trust was founded in 2006 by Wilfred Chivell. Operating in the incredible marine environment of Gansbaai which is this area is home to the Marine Big 5™. The Trust conducts valuable research, conservation and education. The companies support the Trust financially and are essential in fundraising for the Trust.

It’s a lovely day and we arrive around 11h30 for our 12h15 boat cruise. We were warmly greeted at reception with friendly smiles and greetings. We are led to an outside section where we can have tea, coffee and home-made muffins – alternatively indulge in a tasty lunch at the restaurant The Great White House. They were our welcoming host for the duration of our excursion. We were provided with secure parking, accommodation, the restaurant, coffee shop, gift shop, conference and education centre, relaxing garden, luxury bathrooms (with hot showers), free WiFi internet access and free digital camera download facilities. This centre offers truly unparalleled services in the area, and we felt comfortable from the moment we stepped through the doors. Once settled in, the group is sat in a small congregated area in front of a large television screen. We are introduced to the crew of 5, received information about their incredible Dyer Island Conservation Trust and further information about the animals we would aim to see: Southern Right Whale, Brydes Whale, Humpback Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, Great white shark, endangered African Penguin, Cape Gannet & Cormorant, Bank Cormorant, Crowned Cormorant, Whitebreasted Cormorant and Cape fur seals. A short video was then played with ample information regarding the boat trip, safety rules and regulations and their boat ‘Dreamcatcher’. The Dreamcatcher is the first boat in South Africa to be designed specifically for whale watching. It was extremely comfortable and spacious, with two on board toilets, an observation deck, PA system and even a hydrophone! Once the film was finished, we were given our lifejackets and wind/waterproof jackets and sent on our way to the boat. The trip itself was truly amazing. We saw some of the more rarer animals of the Marine Big 5. We spotted a Great White, Humpback Dolphins, endangered African Penguins, Cape Gannet & Cormorant, Bank Cormorant, Crowned Cormorant, White-breasted Cormorant, Cape fur seals and even the spouting of the Brydes Whale! The passionate crew members on board could answer any questions and gave us information throughout the journey on the animals we saw and sections of waters we passed through. The talented skipper traversed through sea unlike any we’ve seen before – truly one-of-a-kind! Once back on land, we went back to the The Great White House for hot soup and rolls. On our way home, we popped into the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary – this is the first dedicated African Penguin rehabilitation centre at the species natural home at Dyer Island. This was founded by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and serves as a centre for the community to report injured seabirds, house and protect penguins that can’t be in the wild and release rehabilitated seabirds back to their original capture sites. We saw the penguins and various sea birds as well as learn their names and personalities! It was truly very special. Dyer Island Cruises lives by the ‘Discover and Protect’ slogan, and truly lives by this conservation oriented and respect ethos. Not only do they supporting the community by employment opportunities for local community upliftment, but they are protecting the environment through their conservation involvement. Dyer island is absolutely a must-do for any tourist, traveller and local - there is no place we can strongly recommend enough for a one-of-a-kind life-changing experience. We would go back any day in a heartbeat.
DYER ISLAND TOURS PELAGIC ENCOUNTERS - If you would like to see and photograph albatrosses, petrels and shearwaters at close range, then this trip is for you. WHALE AND BIRD WATCHING - See South Africa’s beautiful whales and birds without disturbing their natural behaviour. Plane based wildlife viewing - Watch amazing whales, birds and marine life from the sky WHITE SHARK CAGE DIVING - Our sister company, Marine Dynamics, specialises in fantastic great white shark cage diving experiences, all hosted on a custom -built boat by expert marine biologists.

Designer David Krynauw and his team turn the classic riempie chair into a work of art
If one were to name an iconic South African chair, the riempie stool would be it. With its seat or backing crosscrossed with strips of worked leather, this local signature dates back to the early 1900s. For Southern Guild’s Transformation exhibition, demonstrating the blurred line between art and design, furniture designer David Krynauw and his head designer Gideon Pieterse have taken a previous iteration of his Jeppestown Bench and turned it into a circular 12-seater environment that’s got design-lovers floored. ‘The riempie pays homage to my Afrikaans heritage,’ David explains of the traditional method that can be viewed in many historical buildings in the Cape. Now, he’s placed it in a contemporary context, utilising his design team’s extreme technical expertise, while adding his love of geometry and proportion. David’s method of working with timber is a complicated
one, and he’s patented his manufacturing process, where hand assembly and machinery go hand in hand to refine components for final construction. ‘This allows us to be very experimental,’ he says. The original Jeppestown Bench was modelled from the idea of producing seating that stepped down gradually, almost as if collapsing on itself. For the Jeppestown Play Bench, the idea was further developed to form a complete circle, still showing off the wenge wood’s beautiful grain. ‘We don’t follow a traditional approach to woodwork, which is generally a rather rigid craft,’ he says. ‘By looking at it slightly differently, we’ve discovered a new way of working with wood, and the Jeppestown Play Bench really shows off our ability with timber as well as the unique design language my team has created.’ It’s a language David believes can be applied to anything, and has already been utilised on an ambitious pergola structure. It seems that this designer won’t be taking a resting seat anytime soon.
Jeppestown Play Bench is on show at Southern Guild until 4 March. 021 461 2856 l 10 Lewin Street, Woodstock l Open Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm. Saturday by appointment l www. southernguild.co.za

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman
funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.
After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. Anyone who knows anything about Cape Town’s fashion scene will concur that no list of the city’s prolific designers is complete without mention of Stefania Morland. The dreamlike pieces of this local, luxury couturier and ready-to-wear brand that decorate the boutique window in upper Kloof Street like the stuff of ethereal queens and monarchs. Here she shares the ins-and-outs of her creative process, the inspiration behind her latest collection and why she’s thrilled to be part of Cape Town’s fashion community. Can you tell us about your latest collection, Spring/Summer 16/17? This collection was going a totally different route, until I heard the soundtrack of the film Man from U. N. C. L. E. The music transported me straight into the 60’s - vibey, playful and very cool. I immediately knew that this was perfect direction for the new collection, and all previous thoughts about it were abandoned instantly. From here the colours, fabrics, trims, and finaly the perfect print all came together and it started to take on a life of its own. What gets you excited about Cape Town’s fashion scene at the moment? It’s a very exciting, cosmopolitan and inspirational one. Capetonians on the whole have a great sense of style, and there are so many talented designers, young as well as the more established names, who are producing world class collections. You’ve been running your atelier in Kloof Street for some time now, whats the best part about the area? I made the big mistake of moving away from Kloof Street about eight years ago. I soon realized my mistake, and before I knew it I was back. It’s a bustling road, with a European vibe and a variety of interesting shops, good food and coffee, and all on street level as opposed to being cooped up in a shopping mall. Can you take us through your design process for your collectionsfrom inspiration right through to making the garments? Normally inspiration for new collections comes in different guises. It could be music, like my previous collection, maybe a piece of fabric that demands my attention. It could be inspired by travels, or just anything I spot during a normal day and usually when I least expect it. It always takes a long time for me to get started, but when I start, I’m unstoppable. I have a very dedicated team that have been with me from the start, and they totally understand my expectations. I have a very specific signature, which they interpret perfectly in their execution of the garments. Also, I am very blessed to have the most wonderful customers which have become dear friends over the years. They are also a big part of my inspiration when creating. www.stefaniamorland.com

Since Francois’s entrance to the SA music industry in 2003 with the release of his first band Fokofpolisiekar’s first EP caused a lot of controversy - with Francois being a pastor’s child, his parents were not very impressed with the band’s name, neither was the congregation! Moving 14 years later, now 2017, anticipation is running high leading up to the launch of his second solo album: Hierdie is die Lewe, on 2nd February. Francois and his band, Die Gevaar, are eager to hit the road and perform new material all over South Africa – and we were lucky enough to grab a cuppa and snag some time with the South African Superstar. Who are you? My name is Francois van Coke. I am a singer, songwriter and father. I’ve played in rock bands since I was 15 years old and in a way I think it defines who I am. Describe your music to someone who hasn’t listened to it? You began a revolution back in 2003, how do you think you’ve evolved as musician? I think I play rock music? *giggles* that’s the broader genre. In my career, I started playing aggressive punk music with my first band Fokofpolisiekar - the first noteworthy band I was in. From there on it has been an evolution from punk rock, acoustic and then my own brand Van Coke Kartel in 2007 which is a hard-rock ‘party’ band. I released first solo album in 2015 and I wanted to make different music as a solo artist – still in the rock genre, but influenced by songs I listened to when I was a kid such as folk, hip-hop and country. My personal evolution was to evolve from punk rock to someone who can play on an acoustic guitar and still be taken seriously *laughs* Do you ever experience writer’s block? I imagine this would be particularly annoying if you were in a collaboration situation. If you do, what do you do to get over it? I consistently sit with writer’s block! To be honest, you can’t wait around for inspiration, you simply just have to bash it

out – it might not be your best, but it will give you a start. You just have to get at it. Do you think online music plays a large part in where the industry heads in the future? Where do you see songwriters & musicians fitting into that? Everything is online already which is troublesome for the artists/band that is hoping to make money off CD sales. I was lucky in that my 1st solo album sold the most out of all the projects I’ve been in, despite online options. I am also lucky that a massive part of my following still buys CDs! It is vital to tour and perform – this is where you’ll make your money as well as gather exposure. How do you balance your music with other obligations? You just have to! *laughs* my baby was born in November so I took time off, but from February onwards I will be touring more as to promote the new album. I will have to learn to manage both worlds. It will need to be quality time with my family – quantity isn’t always an option – so turning off all electronics, phones etc and spending good one-on-one time. To make the best of the moments you have and live in that moment without distraction. Of course, I want to have an integral part in my child’s life and upbringing and I’m going to make sure that happens. What are your fondest musical memories? There are quite a couple! I think opening for Metallica has to be a highlight – they were one of my favourite bands growing up! I played for 100 000 people in Taiwan which was weird and fun *laughs* Naturally all projects I’ve been involved has had an impact. I suppose starting off young, playing in a band and travelling the country, is the same as memory one’s university period and having a jol! Best advice ever given & received? Best advice I have given: “It gets better.” The best advice I have received was not necessarily in a sentence. I collaborate with a good friend of mine Karen Zoid.
In the past 2 years, she has helped me think more about the business-side of the music industry and my future. Future plans? I’ve got my fantastic band Die Gevaar – all are young, great and amazing people. I now have a set band which is great. Now looking into the future, my first mission is to play my first album live and give a live performance justice. I am working on the biggest show I have ever done in my life! I cannot disclose details until end of February, but it’s happening in mid-2017. Very exciting and scary! What can we look forward to with your new album? It is different from my usual work with the bands – mainly lyric-wise. I’ve gone through many changes over the past few years, I now have a beautiful wife and a baby, and that has influenced what I write about. I have also moved back to the suburbs – which I never thought I would do! It all plays a part in my album. After listening to it several times, I realised it speaks of my existential crisis – finding purpose after all these changes I’ve been through. My mission from here-on is to figure out my ‘purpose’ since these changes. What advice would you give a tourist when coming to South Africa? Come to SA before January – the wind is mad now! - TLR

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,
especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance
Discover
• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.
big 5 safaris
Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari? A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:
AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
