HAPPY NEW YEAR
HAIRSPRAY
IMMACULATE DECEPTION
a hilarious, heart-warming rom com, adapted by South African icon David Kramer from the hit, award-winning play Midsummer by David Greig and Gordon McIntyre.
A feel-good stage musical and winner of eight Tony Awards. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Tracy Turnblad, a quirky, plus-sized teenager with a plus-sized hairdo has a big dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show on national television. She transforms into a local celebrity, but faces discrimination because of her weight, her choice in friends and her hairdo. Tracy becomes determined to use her influence to push for social change and racial integration in the show.
The fabulous comedy female impersonator, Ceri Dupree, is heading to South Africa with her sharp wit and sequins! Glamorous costumes, routines, jokes and songs make this UK-based star one talented performer.
High flying divorce lawyer Lee-André meets car salesman and small-time criminal Dan in a bar one midsummer’s night when the married man she’s been seeing cancels their date. She’s out of Dan’s league, he’s totally not her type, but when these two disparate souls come together, a wild weekend of alcohol-infused adventure and abandon ensues. Between bridgeburning, car chases, wedding bust ups and self-loathing hangovers, they discover they are not so different after all, and that maybe there are second chances at life – and love. The Fugard Theatre, from 19 Feb, Tickets R160 - R220 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi
Hairspray’s timeless message is that everyone should be treated equally regardless of social, cultural and physical differences. With memorable songs such as Good Morning, Baltimore and You Can’t Stop The Beat, the show will have you tapping your feet and smiling for days!

With a touch of Las Vegas glitz, this pacey ‘over the top’ show is the perfect way to start the year. His energy, style and showmanship shines through in this non-stop, quickchanging, one-man, multiple woman show!

WOZA ALBERT
SAINTHOOD
Don`t be deceived: this is not a play for children! This is a wicked and wonderful cautionary fairy tale for adults that will delight and haunt you. It is all about what it is to be human, to long for something, to wish for something more than what you have, to deal with inevitable loss and the terrible beauty that this journey through the world offers us.
South African theatre giants Mbongeni Ngema and Percy Mtwa reprise their original roles, which they created four decades ago, in one of the most brilliant classics. This internationally acclaimed play, directed by Christopher John, is set to make local theatre history with this revival. At the height of apartheid, the two actors asked a simple question, “what would happen if Christ returned to present-day South Africa?” Ngema and Mtwa developed the stage play with renowned theatre-maker, Barney Simon. It went on to become a world-wide phenomenon and a celebrated example of hard-hitting political satire, touring the world during the late 1970s & ‘80s.
Sainthood is a theatrical play that was made in 2017 at the University of Cape Town from a collection of true stories from interviews conducted by the director and playwright, Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni. The interviews were centred around the masculine culture cultivated in male dominated spaces such as unisex schools.

INTO THE WOODS A musical. Follow the trials and adventures of a collection of wellknown fairy-tale characters from Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Red Riding Hood as they all go into the deep, dark woods on separate quests, where their paths cross and intersect with sometimes amusing, sometimes alarming results.

Hello Cape Town February 2019
From there, the interviews and articles were amalgamated into a five person play called ‘ A Tragic Conversation on the Persistence of Sainthood’ that took these interviews and fictionalised them into the lives of five fictional adolescent boys at a fictional elite South African all-boys school as they come to terms with their identity, sexuality, race and academics within a brotherly culture that is not as saintly as it seems. At the
2018 National Arts Festival, Sainthood was awarded a 2018 Standard Bank Ovation Award. Baxter Theatre, 6 - 23 Feb, Tickets R50 - R100 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi KROTOA: EVA VAN DE KAAP The story of Krotoa Eva is very relevant in contemporary South Africa. It brings to the stage a neglected and contested aspect of shared history in a way that is innovative. The work sheds new light on an ancient story. Not so long ago few people knew who Krotoa was. The play contends that there has since been an awakening because story has not ended. The play connects the dots between what happened at a 17th Century Fort and what is still happening in the modern world. It is a compelling and engaging story that will help the audience understand their past, make sense of the present and be better prepared for the future. EDUCATING RITA
RMB STARLIGHT CLASSICS
This iconic Willy Russell play, set in Liverpool, England in 1980, follows the relationship between hairdresser Rita, and Frank, a middle-aged university lecturer, over the course of a year.
A spectacular evening of music, song and dance. This Afro-symphonic tribute to our beautiful country brings together a collection of diverse musical talent, conducted by Maestro Richard Cock and directed by Darren Hayward.
Dissatisfied with life, Rita seeks inner growth by signing up for a course in English Literature with Frank, a middleaged, alcoholic academic. The two have an immediate and profound effect on one another; Frank is impressed by Rita`s earnestness and is forced to re-examine his attitudes and position in life, while Rita finds Frank`s tutelage opens doors to a bohemian lifestyle and a new self-confidence. However, Frank`s bitterness and cynicism return as he notices Rita beginning to adopt the pretensions of the university culture he despises,

A4 ARTS Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the arts in southern Africa. A4 is focused towards practitioners and seeks to accommodate and share exploratory creative processes. The space is a peopled place — embedded and adaptable, grounded and fluid — and we see ourselves as a part of and participants within a complex ecosystem. A4 emerged from a desire to provide nuanced interaction with the arts in southern Africa - aiming to connect people, ideas, and practices at both a local and international level. Recognising and engaging the various economies that comprise cultural practice in southern Africa, we’re working towards new forms of exchange amongst practitioners, publics, intermediaries, and patrons.
David Goldblatt
The premises opened to the public in September 2017 and encompass a gallery or multimedia project space and an archive. A4 also offers private studio and workshop space. The building is designed to facilitate engagement with and within the arts, to support open education, experimentation, collaboration, and conversation. A4 Public Library. The library at A4 arts is open to the public throughout A4’s opening hours and is free to use. The library features a selection of publications that investigate visual, social, and spatial thematics with a special focus on Cape Town, southern Africa, and its global circulations. Recent A4 exhibits; PICTURE THEORY, explored the work of DAVID GOLDBLATT (1930 - 2018) through a showing of his photographic prints, the film GOLDBLATT (2017), a selection of texts, workshops, seminars, residencies, and a reading room. For more than 6 decades, Goldblatt (1930 - 2018) photographed the complexities of daily life in South Africa under the apartheid regime. A social-cartographer, Goldblatt’s life’s work spanned 60 years of vigilant looking, learning and sharing through photography. It emphasised his a longing for rootedness to the land, his quest to delineate the values that underly human connection, and an insatiable aspiration to marry the poetic and the political in a single image. Since the early 1990s Perjovschi’s work has developed into a prolific drawing practice, focusing in particular on the satire. Perjovschi’s wordplay & drawings have materialised around the world on windows, sidewalks and on the walls of iconic art museums including MoMA, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, Hamburger Kunsthalle,Germany; MOT Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 48th and 52nd Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden and the Tate, London, UK. COMING UP 16 MARCH The Cape Town Carnival, held annually in March, is a year-long programme culminating in a street parade that showcases and celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa. For several hours on a late-summer evening, more than 50 energetic and talented community performance groups, spectacular floats, giant puppets and extravagant costumes bring the Green Point Fan Walk alive, while thousands of spectators from all over the world converge along the 1.2km parade route. Over 2 000 dazzling costumed performers and musicians will take to Cape Town’s Fan Walk, entertaining viewers with floats and vibrant dance routines. The parade will be followed by a family party, showcasing some of SA’s hottest musical talent. The Carnival brings people together from all over the metropole, creates a platform for participation and artistic expression, reclaims public space for the parade event, and encourages recognition of the many communities, motivated groups and talented individuals who strut their stuff in the annual spectacular. The Cape Town Carnival 2019 ‘VUKA UKHANYE Rise ’n Shine’ parade depicts a vivid journey of awakening, from sunrise and waking up in the morning to symbolically waking up to your own power, to our interconnectedness and the light within each of us when we open hearts, eyes and minds. DRESS UP & PARTICIPATE: Dress comfortably in your “dancing shoes” as the Fan Walk is 2 km long and there will be many things to explore. From 3 PM the Fan Walk turns into a pedestrian walkway filled with fun, food and folk enjoying the freedom of their city streets. 7 PM the PARADE BEGINS! Along the route there are going to be a few paid options to add and complete this awesome day: - A food court will be placed at the traffic department parking area on the corner of Ebenezer. - The party at the Carnival Village on the corner of York will start at 14:00 with live acts. - Bleacher-style terraced platforms will be placed along the north pavement. Seated tickets must be pre-purchased online. - City Sightseeing buses will be placed along the south pavement for the same purposes. Visit capetowncarnival.com for ticketing.

scent of love
It is the perfect time of the year to deliver a loved one a gift that combines sensuality and high end design. And not out of your reach. The recently curated Ethereal range of bath, body and home products it a versatile and elegant gift for any gender at every age. With fragrances grounded in nature yet inspired by the intangible. The new range is a natural extension of Carrol Boyes’ well-rounded portfolio of home designs and gifting lines. Intended to enhance and expand on the existing repertoire, Ethereal embodies Carrol Boyes’ signature balance of art and functionality. Our emotional connection to a provocative scent is stronger than our ability to recall a visual stimulus, and we believe that scent plays an important role in establishing an inviting and memorable interior. While the artwork on the packaging references the familiar Carrol Boyes motif of the human form, the scents themselves are inspired by nature. From conception to production only the highest quality imported oils were used to formulate a fragrance that would complement the Ethereal range’s artwork and design. The scent needed to incorporate elements of both light and dark while being simultaneously subtle and bold. Rich base notes of vanilla, musk and sandalwood were selected to be carefully balanced by lively top notes of jasmine, lavender and orange. The range comprises a variety of body, bath and room products, including hand wash, hand lotion, room spray, room diffuser, fragrance sachets (to scent your drawers, linen cupboards, car or suitcase) and a luxury soap bar. All the products are made locally and are not tested on animals. Ethereal is available online and in Carrol Boyes stores nationwide. The range include: 500ml Hand Wash, R299 | 500ml Hand Lotion, R299 | 200ml Room Spray, R289 | 200ml Room Diffuser, R599 100ml Luxury Fragrance Sachet, R99 | 200g Luxury Fragranced Soap Bar, R99

above and below sea level
A visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium became mandatory to every visitor to Cape Town many moons ago. Mainly because South Africa is fortunate to enjoy and explore sea life of two very different oceans- the Atlantic with its cold currents travelling up from Antarctica and the Indian Ocean’s warm waters. We are here to tell you a little bit more about the extra activities that the aquarium offers for all ages atop their magnificent exhibitions. Catch a feeding show: your chance to see the sharks, penguins and rays at their quirkiest and have all your questions answered. I&J OCEAN EXHIBIT DAILY AT 12:00 AND 14:00 The Aquarium’s talking scuba diver hand feeds the sea turtles, rays and guitarfish at noon, and the smaller fish enjoy a feeding frenzy every afternoon. Guides are there to take your questions and teach you about the I&J Ocean Exhibit’s inhabitants.
Phoptographs by Geoff Spiby
PENGUIN EXHIBIT Daily at 11:30 and 14:30 The African penguin colony is joined by the penguin keepers every day for their meals of fish and shrimp. Join the quirky penguins and learn about their habits, lifestyles and the risks they face in the wild. HAVE A PENGUIN EXPERIENCE Get up close and personal with the adorable Rockhopper penguins of the Two Oceans Aquarium. Learn about the feathered friends and watch them being fed. They also love sitting in people’s laps! A perfect selfie opportunity. Suitable for ages 8 - 80. PREDATOR EXHIBIT Sundays at 15:00. Every Sunday afternoon the team of scuba divers enters the Predator Exhibit to feed the ragged-tooth sharks.

HAVE AN OCEAN EXPERIENCE Get a lot closer to the animals of the I&J Ocean Exhibit! Engage with the friendly rescue turtles in the secure environment, and get a privileged look (with mask and snorkel) at the beautiful short-tail stingrays, the man-faced black Musselcracker, giant Guitarfish and the nearly 200 other fish swimming around this large-scale exhibit. LOOK CLOSER, FEEL CLOSER
Cape Town is one of the most spectacular places in the world to paraglide. SIGNAL HILL are the only sites that we fly from because of the location and the stunning views of Table Mountain and the Cape Town area.
“Sea” life under the microscope! Check out the interactive exhibit that reveals the world of the very, very small. Also nearby is the Touch Pool, where you can pick up, touch and feel a variety of marine animals and plants.
The Tandem Flight Company aims to give you the ultimate tandem paragliding experience in Cape Town. A tandem paragliding flight with an instructor is the quickest and safest way for anyone to experience paragliding. It also happens to be one of the best and most unique ways to see Cape Town. While you sit comfortably in your harness enjoying the amazing view and perhaps taking a picture or two, your pilot makes sure that you have a safe flight. *No Experience Required, closed shoes are necessary!
TAKE A DIVE Diving in the Aquarium offers the unique opportunity to get close to shoals of large predators such as yellowfin tuna, striped bonito, dusky kob and black- and white musselcracker – as well as three turtles: a dive that you can’t experience in the natural environment. Feeding experiences are free- you just need to be there on time. Individual experiences are charged differently and can be booked directly on the Two Oceans Aquarium website.

MOOIPLAAS WINE ESTATE & PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE
Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve is situated among the majestic mountains and fertile valleys in the Stellenbosch Winelands, approximately 40km east of Cape Town. Mooiplaas is a historic and traditional working wine farm. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of ancient mineral-rich soils in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, overlooking Cape Town. There is a difference of approximately 235 m between the highest and the lowest areas on the estate. From the highest point of the estate (370 m above sea level) one has a panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right. Here Tielman and Louis Roos produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition and artisan techniques that make the most of the unique terroir. In 1995 Mooiplaas registered about 70ha of the farm as a nature reserve, conserving critically endangered fynbos species.

winelands aesthetics Dr JJ Huskisson Your age does not define you; you define your age. At Winelands Medical and Aesthetic Dr Joseph J. Huskisson (Aesthetic and General Practitioner, MB ChB Stell 1990) can make you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside. Dr Huskisson’s luxuriously upmarket practice in Stellenbosch Square has been making dreams come true since 2006. His professional, discreet team offer a relaxing atmosphere where individual attention is ensured and enjoyed by all. Dr Huskisson has established a strong client base through his thorough and personal approach to every patient. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr Huskisson went on to practice medicine in Somerset West and the Strand. It was after his relocation to the United Kingdom, where he became a member of the Joint Committee of General Practitioners; that he made his post-graduate transition from pure medicine to aesthetics. He has set a high standard in aesthetics and thus provides training to medical practitioners in Botox and Dermal Fillers. Dr Huskisson has been acknowledged as a front- runner in his field by being one of 13 specialist doctors from South Africa who gets invited to Monaco each year for an all expenses paid trip to the World Aesthetics and Medicines Congress.
Thread Lifts; Lifting / Contouring / Volumizing / Stimulates collagen production
In his spare time, Dr Huskisson enjoys painting and other forms of art. It is this creative edge that enables him to achieve such amazing results. These results can be seen when he provides a Liquid Facelift for a client; where more enduring fillers are used to lift and improve sagging of the face, contour profiles, create shadows and highlights, and delicately adjust the shape of the face. Dr Huskisson’s art can also be seen on the body when he sculpts the body using a revolutionary LipoLaser treatment that offers Laser-assisted Liposuction. This unique, non- aggressive procedure has been offered at Winelands since 2010. His services also include skincare treatments such as Medical micro-needling at a very special price, skin peels and IPL. Due to the fact that these treatments are minimally invasive it requires very little downtime and has wonderful results. Dr Huskisson is in such high demand that he travels to Hermanus, Knysna, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg once a month to treat his aesthetic clients. Picture Theory - An interaction with the work of the late David Goldblatt, the nternationally acclaimed South African photographer who focused on the complex realities of daily life under the apartheid regime. Exploring the work of David Goldblatt through an exhibition of his photographic prints, the film Goldblatt (directed by Daniel Zimbler, 2017), a selection of texts, workshops, seminars, residencies and a reading room. “I wasn’t on the scene at the riots and the focal points of political life and I gradually realized that events themselves were for me much less interesting than the conditions that lead to events. I was looking obliquely at things.” A4 ARTS FOUNDATION I www.a4arts.org 23 Buitenkant Street, District Six.
