HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD Southern Guild hightights six of its Cape Town designers under the age of 30 to keep an eye on this year.

Background image: Jasper Eales - Soul Arch Atang Tshikare Atang’s business, Zabalazaa Designs, sees this self-developed multidisciplinary artist combine geometric line drawing and street art and apply it to a multitude of surfaces. His latest piece for Southern Guild, Monna Pele, made from wood, copper and glass, is a pawn – the first soldier to go into battle. Monna Pele, meaning ‘man first’, depicts how, in the African culture, the man is the first to enter the house, ensuring it’s safe for the rest of the family. Ebrahim Assur Ebrahim is a graduate of Industrial Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and recipient of the Southern Guild Design Foundation 2013 Apprentice Award, which resulted in a year-long apprenticeship with stalwart furniture-maker Pierre Cronje. During this time, Ebrahim designed and produced the Delela Chair, which made its debut at Design Miami with Southern Guild in 2014. Produced from Stinkwood and riempie, it’s a contemporary take on traditional Cape Dutch furniture. Daniella Mooney Daniella’s sculptural work consists mostly of natural materials such as wood, stone, moss and crystals, which are either crafted as site-specific installations or separate pieces, exploring themes in alchemy, magic and

natural phenomena. Porcelain Catenary Arch, made from bronze and Rustenberg Granite, with Yogi De Beer, is inspired in part by the Gateway Arch in Missouri, USA. It deals with aspects of ritual, performance, celebration and an attempt to commune with the sacred within everyday life. Driaan Claassen Inspired to analyse and embody nature in an eternal object, Driaan’s work can be appreciated from both near and far. Exploring the entrancing patterns found in nature, he highlights these with the use of geometric and organic forms, while trying to balance the aesthetic of man and nature. His bronze vessels are a development of his observations in the natural world, be it a zoomed-in view of a drop of water, or the intricate detail on a leaf.
Laurie Wiid van Heerden Wiid Design combines simple materials with modern design and energy-saving technology. All of Laurie’s products incorporate handmade elements, which he oversees, with his cork designs having gained him much notoriety. The collectible, limited edition benches he produces for Southern Guild – often in collaboration with artists and surface designers – all have two distinctive characters: their feet are all similarly shaped, and their length is always equal, as seen in the Chiaroscuro and Apparition Benches.
Jasper Eales Jasper’s work focuses on the integrity of materials and designs where function dictates form. With an honest approach to each piece, the object’s usability and functional basics are his main concern, and his designs speak of easy living and longevity. The ocean, beach, and his outdoor lifestyle are natural forms of inspiration for the designer whose Soul Arch Table, made from locally sourced Kiaat and Ficus, takes its cue from his love of surfing.

ARTSCAPE PRESENTS OTHELLO AT MAYNARDVILLE This summer, one of Cape Town’s most iconic and best loved theatres celebrates its diamond jubilee. For 60 years, since its inception in 1956, an annual Shakespeare play has been staged under the stars at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre which is now regarded as one of the most beautiful open-air theatres in the world. Maynardville’s 60th anniversary coincides with another very auspicious anniversary for the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon as 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Throughout 2016, theatre companies across the globe will pay tribute to William Shakespeare’s lasting legacy as the world’s pre-eminent playwright. Having staged Shakespeare for over a decade, Artscape has selected to revive their critically acclaimed 2015 production of Othello in partnership with the City of Cape Town. Hailed as “a triumph” by the local press, Othello drew such large audiences in 2015 that additional performances had to be added and the run extended. This will be the second time in Maynardville’s 60 year history that a play is revived by popular demand. The last play to hold this distinction was Ken Leach’s 1986 Asterix-inspired production of The Comedy of Errors, which returned to the Maynardville stage in 1987. Of all Shakespeare’s plays, Othello resonates most within a South African context with its themes of racism, jealousy, passion, obsession and betrayal. These themes powerfully combine in a devastating domestic tragedy that is as gripping today as it was when it was written over 400 years ago. The play is a major attraction for schools all over as it is currently being studied as a Grade 12 set work and is also open to the public. Artscape is also pleased to announce that internationally acclaimed Cape Town star, Pope Jerrod, has signed on to play the title role of Othello. Pope has proved to be one of South Africa’s most versatile actors having featured in numerous television and film productions locally and internationally such as “Safe House” alongside Denzel Washington, Taste of Rain, The Lost Future, Hansie Cronje as well as Stokvel and Isidingo amongst others. The supporting cast include Melissa Haiden as Desdemona, Marcel Meyer as Iago, Lee-Ann van Rooi as Emilia, Stephen Jubber as Cassio, Matthew Baldwin as Roderigo, Faniswa Yisa as Bianca, Robin Smith as Brabantio, Daniel Richards as Lodovico and Siya Sikawuti as Montano and The Duke of Venice. Award-winning duo, Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer return as the creative team for this production. Abrahamse & Meyer have achieved international recognition for their innovative Shakespeare productions which include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Maynardville 2013, Artscape and National Arts Festival 2012), Shakespeare’s R&J (National Arts Festival and The Fugard Theatre 2011), The Tragedy of Richard III (National Arts Festival 2010 and Artscape and the Market Theatre 2011) and their most recent production of The Tragedy of Hamlet which proved immensely popular with audiences and critics at the 2015 National Arts Festival, Grahamstown. Othello is directed by Fred Abrahamse [whose previous Maynardville productions include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2001 and 2013), Much Ado About Nothing (2005) and Romeo and Juliet (2007)] with set and costume designs by Marcel Meyer, lighting design by Faheem Bardien and original score by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder. The production runs from 26 January till 23 February 2016. Tickets at Artscape Box Office, Dial-a-Seat and Computicket Outlets ranging from R80 – R180. He was the first Black American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his group achieved unprecedented success. At the same time the musical charts the evolution of Black American music from spirituals (Jubilee songs) to jazz and includes several original songs by David Kramer.

Marvin Hamlisch was the man behind some of the most beautiful music of the twentieth century. From his humble beginnings as Barbra Streisand’s rehearsal pianist on FUNNY GIRL, to winning a record three Academy Awards on the same night at only 29, it was clear that he was destined for greatness. Not only was he the composer of famous hits like the ‘The Way We Were’, ‘Nobody Does it Better’ and ‘I Finally Found Someone’, he was also the composer of musicals such as A CHORUS LINE, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG, and THE GOODBYE GIRL. Hamlisch penned the scores for dozens of films, including THE STING, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, ICE CASTLES, SOPHIE’S CHOICE, ORDINARY PEOPLE, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS and THE INFORMANT. Locally and Internationally acclaimed South African band Freshlyground rocks SA and the world over! Weaving their magical and unquestionably groovy music to all! Kyla-Rose Smith, violinist and backing vocalist of the band fill us in on their past, present and future: Freshlyground is quite an eclectic collection of band members! How did it form and how on earth did the name Freshlyground come about? We formed in Cape Town in about 2002. It didn’t happen all at once, the original keyboard player Aron was studying at UCT and he wanted to start a band. At the time he was working in a bookstore with the former guitarist Justin and they decided to get together and start playing. Aron then met Simon in a bar in Observatory in which he found out he was a flute player and so he asked him if he would join - a drummer and a violinist shortly followed. So they were playing as an instrumental band when Aron saw Zolani singing in a play at UCT. She was studying Drama at the time and he asked her to come to a gig to hear them play. Zolani thought she was just going to watch a friend’s band when in the middle of the show he asked if she would come up and sing! Nonetheless she did and from that moment she became our singer. About 6 months later Josh the bass player and I joined so. The band kinda formed over a year or two in that way. The band had a few names; I think for every gig they had a different name! Then one gig at the Armchair Theatre in Obz, they asked the audience to vote on a selection of names that they had and the winner was Freshlyground. What a brilliant beginning! Looking into your music, it has been described as: Blues, Jazz, indie rock and afropop! How would you describe the band’s music and why did you decide to play the genre you do?
I think we are an afro-pop band on the whole. We play African pop music with a little bit of all that other stuff thrown in there. It wasn’t a choice; it was just something that naturally came together out of all of our independent solo musician’s musical tastes. We don’t restrict ourselves to a particular genre so it is just kinda what happens when all of us are playing together! So many individual tastes and feelings! Do you all have a musical albeit non-musical influences? As I say, we are 7 individuals and I think we are made up of the sum of those 7 musical interests which are quite varied. We all have a strong African influence by which we either come from Southern Africa or listen to a lot of African music, so that’s kinda the common thread between all of us. You have had quite a prolific 13 years! Internationally acclaimed and awarded – not to mention rubbing shoulders with international superstars? What is your outlook on the SA music industry now in 2016? I think we have a very rich culture of music in this country; we have a lot of prolific musicians that come from SA. Music is a very big part of SA life and I think that is a wonderful thing to live in a country where it is such an important part of our cultural expression. What is Freshlyground currently working on? What can we expect from you? We recently released a single ‘Don’t Leave Me’ and we’ve been working on some new songs. Also our collaboration we’ve done with Jack Parrow – our James Bond themed music video which was a lot of fun! So kind of little bits and pieces of things.
Any travel plans? We do travel internationally at least once a year. We were in American in June/July 2015 and hopefully we will be again this year. Looking forward to the future, what would you say is the band’s dream? Your ultimate goal? A tough question *laugh* I think Freshlyground has become somewhat of a household name in SA and it would be wonderful to export that worldwide, you know? To be able to reach the far corners of the world with our music. Everyone was a start up once, can you give any tips to smaller or local bands looking to get gig and airplay? *laughs* It’s tough. It’s a tough industry. I think you have to be true to yourself, you have to know who you are and I think it’s important to have a message – whatever that is. I think it’s essential to say something with your music, to be an individual and work hard. What is your message? Our message is one of love, humanity and that we recognise the humanity in everybody. We hope to spread that message to our audiences and for them to recognise one another and to appreciate one another for who they are. - TLR

It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research. SHARK WHISPERER
with Supreme Sharks
On a trip with Supreme Sharks, a shark cage diving company working from Kleinbaai, clients have the unique opportunity to meet the free diving shark expert Andre Hartman on the trip or at the clubhouse. Andre is one of South Africa’s few self-taught shark experts and is respected as such throughout the world. He was one of the first to take the ‘cage’ out of shark cage diving and his pioneering work with the Great White attracted numerous film crews to Kleinbaai, the shark capital of the world. He has featured in many documentaries for Discovery, CNN and National Geographic to name but a few. Andre got the name shark whisperer when he accidentally discovered that touching the tip of its snout would cause a shark to lung up and back in a trance-like manner for a few seconds. After his 2nd stroke he struggles to walk but is getting stronger every day and dreams of going back into the water with these fierce creatures. He now shares his knowledge of the Great White and multitude of stories with the crew and our passengers. “I’m just mesmerized by how they move and what they do, and that fascinates me. They’re like an airplane - they fly in the water. Those wings flex with the weight of the body.” Andre Hartman, African Voices, CNN 24 December 2014

Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination. The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Boulders Visitor Centre: +27(0) 21 786 2329. Gate hours: Winter: April - September 08:00 - 17:00, Summer: December - January 07:00 - 19:30; February - March - 08:00 - 18:30; October - November - 08:00 - 18:30. CAPE FUR SEAL

In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has reintroduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they
do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/ December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old. They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. Drumbeat Charters from Hout Bay Harbour cruise to Duiker Island between 4-6 time a day and you can get there by using MyCiti bus or the City Sightseeing red, double decker busses of the mini peninsula tour. Reservation is no necessary but if you’d like to check the option off a private cruise or more details see: www.drumbeatcharters.co.za or call 021 - 791 4441 GREAT WHITE SHARK
For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September. SHARK CAGE DIVING: The funds raised from great white experiences and tours in Cape Town are helping scientist learn more about their behaviour and funding shark research in the Cape. Most shark experiences happen off the coast of Gansbaai or Kleinbaai, two hours outside of Cape Town. Book with one of our accredited tour partners to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time and get face-to-face with the ocean’s greatest predator. Hello Cape Town January 2016 l
