misunderstood creatures. Take things to the next level with a crocodile cage diving experience by sharing a pond with half a dozen adult Nile crocs. Facilitated by African Croc Dive, crocodile cage diving is a thrilling close encounter that includes a safety briefing and all diving equipment. It takes place in a sturdy and spacious steel cage that’s surrounded by water on all sides. You’ll spend around 20 minutes in the crocs’ watery habitat and will get to see them both feeding and resting. The crocodile cage diving experience is both underwater and at surface level. OSTRICH - THE BIG BIRD

Cape Town is one of the most spectacular places in the world to paraglide. SIGNAL HILL are the only sites that we fly from because of the location and the stunning views of Table Mountain and the Cape Town area.

Big ostrich flocks can be viewed and either at the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch along the R27, north of the city or at the Cape Town Ostrich Farm in the south,

The Tandem Flight Company aims to give you the ultimate tandem paragliding experience in Cape Town. A tandem paragliding flight with an instructor is the quickest and safest way for anyone to experience paragliding. It also happens to be one of the best and most unique ways to see Cape Town. While you sit comfortably in your harness enjoying the amazing view and perhaps taking a picture or two, your pilot makes sure that you have a safe flight. *No Experience Required, closed shoes are necessary!

all about whisky

Established in 1886, the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, produces the award winning Three Ships range and the Bain’s whiskies. Admired brands amongst locals. Last year, for the first time in its 130 year history, this iconic distillery opened its gates to the public for tours and pairings. They conduct 2 sessions per day, at 10:00 & 13:00 for a maximum of 10 guests per session and under the condition that booking is prearranged electronically via Webtickets. The tour I a full 3 hour plan that includes a welcome drink, whisky background explanation, a short video, a malting / milling demonstration in which you are participating, distillation (column + pot), maturation / blending and tasting. Tasting options include two crisp pairings, 3 savoury pairings and two sweet pairings. At the Micro Distillery you can create your own 50 ml blend using a scale replica of the James Sedgwick Distillery and the overall visit includes a meeting with the master distiller. Master Distiller, Andy Watts, is only the 6th manager at The James Sedgwick Distillery since it was established in 1886. His passion, skill and curiosity continues to set the bar for South African whiskies and innovation in the whisky industry. This promises a first-hand sharing of knowledge and love. The range of South African whiskies will be available to purchase at the end of the tour and tasting. Limited release whiskies, only available at the Distillery, will from time to time be offered for purchase to continue the extraordinary experience you had at home or to share the moment with someone special in the form of a gift. No bookings can be made at the distillery or on arrival. Hello Cape Town January 2019 l

let it go to your head

Holiday time. Summer time. This is the perfect time of the year to indulge yourself in the tasting, exploring and learning about South Africa’s exquisite range on Méthode Cap Classique (MCC). Our fine version of sparkling wines. Grown on a variety of terroirs and enjoying both a great selection of successful grape types and more than 350 years of agricultural knowledge, different wineries across our winelands manages to produce award winning bubbles, gaining international recognition and global supporters. In many cases, the finer ranges aligns with the best Champagnes & Proseccos, gracing the best wine lists in restaurants all over the world. Although a typical wine tasting experience is vertical and covers one of the estates’ ranges, take advantage of the beautiful long summer days and lie back on one of the grand verandas, share a bottle with your companion and let the blooming vines and maturing grapes leave their mark on your soul. PERDEBERG The Vineyard Collection Wines are made from specific vineyards, each with its unique character for its cultivar and terroir. For this reason, all wines in the range are of single cultivar. Wines are made in an elegant new world style and with subtle wood contact on the reds. White wines are unwooded. MCC range includes Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir. They can be enjoyed with one of the different cheese platters on offer or with the Tapas Picnic. DE GRENDEL Effervescent elegance in a glass – a beautifully balanced MCC, the winner of multiple trophies and awards through the years, consistently sells out before the anticipated release of the next vintage. The MCC is part of their flagship tasting or a full bottle can be ordered. To complete the treat to your pallet, their award winning restaurant supplies the tasting room with a 3 option gourmet selection - a feast of specially crafted tastes that uses the estate’s own grown berries and the Three Spades Cider as ingredients in the dishes created. DIEU DONNE Their MCC selection includes a Blanc de Blancs and a Brut Rosé. Roca is a Mediterranean restaurant with open indoor vistas and a large outdoor veranda, overlooking the Franschhoek Valley.

DIEMERSFONTEIN Oviation Spumante is the young addition from the estate. Tropical fruit on the nose and a semi-sweet taste with a light sparkle on the palate makes this wine fit for any occasion. The wine is available in both the tasting room and in the next door Seasons Restaurant, a Wellington Wine Route favourite that relies on fresh local products. They are located in the center of well-attended gardens, dotted with large scale, metal animal sculptures. LABORIE You are spoiled with a full range of Blanc De Blancs, Brut and Brut Rosé. The 3 options can be tasted at the KWV Emporium, paired with a selection of cheesecakes. On the actual estate you can enjoy the Taillefert Crémant De Taillefert Brut as part of the wine tastings on offer. On the food front you are spoiled with a choice between the Paarl brunch of the Italian Cucina Di Giovanni or the Pearl Rock Terrace which offers seasonal tapas, pizza, salads, desserts and incredible scenery. LA MOTTE La Motte Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) originates from Franschhoek and the Chardonnay as well as Pinot Noir grapes from which the wines are made, were produced at La Motte. Vineyards grow against a southern slope 200 metres above sea level. The wine is available as part of the tasting room offerings or at the special Wine & Food Tasting experience that occurs once a week. Presented from Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant, a well-informed Wine Ambassador guides guests through an educational and entertaining food and wine pairing. Food is presented as a modern interpretation of heritage cuisine and the restaurant team works closely with cellar master, Edmund Terblanche, in creating cuisine to beautifully complement the estate’s wines. A relaxed dining experience is available in the gardens with a special dedicated menu, less formal than the restaurant. LOEPARD’S LEAP The bubbly selection includes Culinaria Brut Méthode Cap Classique and Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir. They are both available in the tasting room as part of a vertical tasting. In addition, a special Wine and Food Pairing takes place on Fridays at 12:00. A chance to join Leopard’s Leap chef, Pieter de Jager and one of Leopard’s Leap’s knowledgeable and enthusiastic Wine Tasting Ambassadors. Inspired by the Leopard’s Leap Culinaria Collection that is based on traditional French blends and made with the specific focus of being exceptional partners to food, the pairings shows these wines with foods that illustrate the skill of food and wine pairing. Wines from the bigger Leopard’s Leap portfolio are also included to add interest and dimension to the tasting and to offer guests the opportunity to enjoy wellmatched combinations while getting to know the fundamentals behind making informed dinner table choices. The sessions are highly informative and, while being interactive and entertaining, provide very useful information regarding food and wine choices for future reference. The Rotisserie restaurant is very popular with locals and offers a South African Table and Family Table experience among others, designed for leisurely stays on long summer days. MOOIPLAAS WINE ESTATE & PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE The Duel MCC (NV) is suggested to be paired with charcuterie, oysters & seafood, roast poultry and grilled pork dishes. A picnic in their beautiful garden looking out over the vineyards is a perfect excuse to try the MCC. Gourmet picnic baskets are available from the estate. Hello Cape Town January 2018 l

MOOIPLAAS WINE ESTATE & PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve is situated among the majestic mountains and fertile valleys in the Stellenbosch Winelands, approximately 40km east of Cape Town. Mooiplaas is a historic and traditional working wine farm. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of ancient mineral-rich soils in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, overlooking Cape Town. There is a difference of approximately 235 m between the highest and the lowest areas on the estate. From the highest point of the estate (370 m above sea level) one has a panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right. Here Tielman and Louis Roos produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition and artisan techniques that make the most of the unique terroir. In 1995 Mooiplaas registered about 70ha of the farm as a nature reserve, conserving critically endangered fynbos species.

return to the source

CAPE NATURE’S TOP 3 WATER EXPERIENCES FOR THIS SUMMER SA national parks & Cape Nature are inviting all nature-loving, water-conserving, eco-conscious fans to ‘Return to the Source’ with this summer. That’s right, we’re talking about water: the revitalising source of all life – carrying nutrients, feeding our bodies, keeping plants and animals alive. In the Western Cape, we’ve been faced with the harsh realities of a two-year drought. Thankfully, the dams are looking good and there should be enough to see us through our dry season (if we all keep up with our water saving routines). Which is cause for celebration indeed. The best way to do that? Visit the rivers, oceans – and everything water – that keep our Cape Nature reserves alive. From waves crashing onto rocky headlands at our Robberg reserve to luxury glamping and splash pools at Gamkaberg, there is no end of refreshing experiences to enjoy. It was so hard to choose, but we’ve put together a list of our Top 3 in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo regions: 1. TAKE A DIP UNDER A BLANKET OF STARS AT ANYSBERG The diverse region of the Klein Karoo is known to be dry, but guests that stay in Cape Nature cottages have access to a private pool, right on their doorstep. Perfect for star-gazing and midnight swims. If you’re planning a day visit, you can still rent a kayak and cruise down one of the Gouritz River system tributaries. This region is home to three biomes and is known as a global biodiversity hotspot – which is all supported by the rivers that flow (sometimes trickle) through the area.

2. DISCOVER GOUKAMMA’S MARINE SAFE HAVEN Think 16.5km of untouched coastline. Sandy shores, rocky outcrops and an abundant array of indigenous and endemic animal, bird and fish life (because this is a protected area). Heaven on earth for anyone who feels nourished by the ocean and all her bounty. And if you head inland, you’ll find the Groenvlei Lake, which is maintained by rain and springs – pure, fresh water.

It’s also one of the very few South African lakes where the largemouth bass live.

3. DRIFT DOWN KEURBOOMS Paddling down the Keurbooms River is like taking a step back in time.

It’s an ancient body of water that’s carved its way through to the ocean and back, for many centuries. The views are breathtaking. And if you paddle long enough (roughly four hours) you’ll find yourself at our Whisky Creek cabin in the Knysna Forest.

Pop in to recharge, splash around, dive in or just float by. The reserve conservation teams have been hard at work keeping the water pristine, just for you.

Huskisson (Aesthetic and General Practitioner, MB ChB Stell 1990) can make you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside. Dr Huskisson’s luxuriously upmarket practice in Stellenbosch Square has been making dreams come true since 2006. His professional, discreet team offer a relaxing atmosphere where individual attention is ensured and enjoyed by all. Dr Huskisson has established a strong client base through his thorough and personal approach to every patient. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr Huskisson went on to practice medicine in Somerset West and the Strand. It was after his relocation to the United Kingdom, where he became a member of the Joint Committee of General Practitioners; that he made his post-graduate transition from pure medicine to aesthetics. He has set a high standard in aesthetics and thus provides training to medical practitioners in Botox and Dermal Fillers. Dr Huskisson has been acknowledged as a front- runner in his field by being one of 13 specialist doctors from South Africa who gets invited to Monaco each year for an all expenses paid trip to the World Aesthetics and Medicines Congress.

Thread Lifts; Lifting / Contouring / Volumizing / Stimulates collagen production

In his spare time, Dr Huskisson enjoys painting and other forms of art. It is this creative edge that enables him to achieve such amazing results. These results can be seen when he provides a Liquid Facelift for a client; where more enduring fillers are used to lift and improve sagging of the face, contour profiles, create shadows and highlights, and delicately adjust the shape of the face. Dr Huskisson’s art can also be seen on the body when he sculpts the body using a revolutionary LipoLaser treatment that offers Laser-assisted Liposuction. This unique, non- aggressive procedure has been offered at Winelands since 2010. His services also include skincare treatments such as Medical micro-needling at a very special price, skin peels and IPL. Picture Theory - An interaction with the work of the late David Goldblatt, the nternationally acclaimed South African photographer who focused on the complex realities of daily life under the apartheid regime. Exploring the work of David Goldblatt through an exhibition of his photographic prints, the film Goldblatt (directed by Daniel Zimbler, 2017), a selection of texts, workshops, seminars, residencies and a reading room. “I wasn’t on the scene at the riots and the focal points of political life and I gradually realized that events themselves were for me much less interesting than the conditions that lead to events. I was looking obliquely at things.” A4 ARTS FOUNDATION I www.a4arts.org 23 Buitenkant Street, District Six.
