The Knysna Oyster Festival is probably one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape. It is also something of a celebration of the good life and sport and has taken place every year since 1983, where it began as the Knysna Winter Festival - a combination of sport that drew people to Knysna during the quiet winter season. Marketed as the ‘Best 10 Days of Your Winter’, the Knysna Oyster festival is spread across two weekends that promise constant fun and activities for the whole family. The sport aspect of the Oyster Festival has evolved into two major sporting events - the Pick n Pay Cape Times Forest Marathon (half marathon), and the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Cycle Tour, now a two-day event that is the biggest of its kind in the country.

A young miner who lives in the heart of the Kalahari Desert feels trapped in his circumstances and wants to pursue his dream for a better life. He lives in poverty with his grandmother and mentally disabled sister, and at night speaks to the moon and shares his dreams with her. The moon, a mythical Khoisan inspired storyteller, guides him through his journey of self-discovery. The journey produces self-control, power of imagination, and a willingness to overcome obstacles.

BORN IN THE RSA

The docu-drama, which was devised by Barney and the cast, is directed by Thoko Ntshinga, who performed the role of Thenjiwe in the original production. With ‘’Born in the RSA’’, she brings together a dynamic young cast of seven actors to bring to life this remarkable production which salutes a legend of South African theatre history.

A dream galaxy, a neglected house, and an old mining company is where storyteller and listener dust the dirt blanket to discover the journey of a young miner earning his freedom. Inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Kalahari Swaan is a rough discovery of a struggle for a better life.

THE MIKADO

The Mikado remains the most successful, and funniest, Gilbert and Sullivan opera. Although set in Japan, which gives it a wonderful opportunity for spectacular sets and costumes, the follies and inconsistencies that Gilbert satirises are all universal, and the same can be said for Sullivan’s glorious and appropriate music. It includes such well-known show-stoppers as A Wand’ring Minstrel, I, I’ve Got a Little List, Three Little Maids from School, Brightly Dawns our Wedding Day and The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring. WE’VE BEEN TO THE INTERNATIONAL TUTANKHAMUN EXHIBITION Following its recent success to critical acclaim in Johannesburg, the international exhibition ‘TUTANKHAMUN – HIS TOMB AND HIS TREASURES’ opened at GrandWest and will run throughout the winter school holidays and until 27 September 2015. This captivating exhibition gives patrons the unique opportunity to experience the treasures of the tomb at their moment of discovery. This amazing adventure begins with a multimedia presentation illustrating the fascinating story behind the exploration and excavation by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, the history of Tutankhamun, and the culture of ancient Egypt. Seen by over five million people worldwide and by over 70,000 visitors in Johannesburg, the exhibition has faithfully reconstructed the tomb of Tutankhamun to scale. There are over 1,000 exquisitely reconstructed burial treasures produced by the finest Egyptian craftsmen under scientific supervision. These exact replicas coupled with state-of-the art technology and video material provide a vivid illustration of the culture and spiritual world of the ancient Egyptians. Visitors will also discover what these magnificent historical finds reveal about the religion, deities, dynasties, and mysterious hieroglyphics of the empire on the Nile. The fragile and valuable original artefacts cannot be transported, so this exhibition offers visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the (perfectly replicated) antiquities from King Tut’s tomb - all under one roof. Brought to South Africa through a partnership with producer SC Exhibitions (Germany), Great World Exhibitions and GrandWest, the exhibition brings the historic moment and the story of the burial treasure’s discovery to life in a unique way. Located in the new “SunExhibits” centre at GrandWest, previously known as the “Magic Castle”, exhibition goers are guided through the exploration “journey” with the help of an audio guide (included in the ticket price) that makes the fascinating experience more enjoyable and fulfilling. There is even a special children’s audio guide to maximise their experience too. Ticket prices range from R80 to R160 per person and there is a special discounted family package of four tickets. Children of five years and younger are admitted free of charge. Furthermore, for added convenience and ease of access to the exhibition, tickets are sold in dedicated half-hour time slots. Visitors may choose when to arrive within the time slot they have selected while booking online or at the exhibition. The Two Oceans Aquarium offers visitors the opportunity to discover the diverse marine life found off the southern African coast. Through displays ranging from the small and almost fantastical Knysna seahorses, to large ragged-tooth sharks, the Aquarium holds wondrous discoveries for young and old, around every corner. Meet the animals that call the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean their home – and the brightly coloured ones that live in the warm Indian Ocean. Be mesmerised by the swaying of the giant kelp in the aptly named Kelp Forest Exhibit- one of only three living kelp forest displays in the world. Or come face-to-face with giant spider grabs and have an adventurous tactile experience at the Touch Pool. The AfriSam Children’s Centre provides hours of fun for young children. Here they can take part in artsand-crafts, play on the modular climbing unit, watch a puppet show or just colour-in. They can also watch the antics of our rockhopper penguins as they dash through the water and enjoy their outside pool. The area is themed as “a Day at the Beach” and comes complete with a large sandpit for great sandcastle building. All of this while they learn about our oceans and the wonderful animals that live in them. The Aquarium offers qualified divers the opportunity to dive in the I&J Predator Exhibit with ragged-tooth sharks, turtles and shoals of other predatory fishes. For divers with an advanced qualification, diving in the Kelp Forest Exhibit, surrounded by a multitude of fish, is a “must-do” dive. The Treetop Canopy Walkway In celebration of its Centenary (1913- 2013), Kirstenbosch botanical gardens chose to add this spectacular project that would be a unique and permanent feature to the venue. This special walkway is a perfect means to mark the occasion. It was built purely from bequest money which has been left to Kirstenbosch by numerous donors, but predominantly Mary Mullins. It is also a fantastic opportunity to take people into the treetops, a place with a distinctive ecology that is generally inaccessible. From here people can experience the forest from high above the ground and also see birds and other animals that are generally elusive. One can experience an entirely new world of tree dynamics - how the treetops move in the wind and how the crowns of the trees interact with one another. The walkway then bursts through and above the canopy, giving you an impression of what it is like to be above the forest. At this point, the walkway provides spectacular 360 degree vistas comprising of Cape Town and the surrounding majestic mountain slopes. Adding to the exceptionality of this modern feature is the fact that the walkway is fully wheelchair accessible. The design of the walkway is envisaged as a sinuous, lightweight, non-intrusive steel structure, which supports a slatted timber deck, and snakes its way into, through and over the ever-changing tree canopy. The structure, comprising ribs and a structural spine, inspired by a snake’s, is supported on slender steel columns intertwined with creepers. On site, the pieces were bolted together and mounted on top of long columns much like a giant mechanic set. The walkway takes advantage of the sloping ground and starts and ends within the arboretum, so there is almost no visual impact from the lawns and walks in the garden. There are no mechanical or electrical aspects to the walk and the gentle gradients will easily raise visitors to over 11 meters above ground and is about a 130 meters long. There is no extra charge for this added feature. A normal garden entry ticket is all that is required.

tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination.

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old. They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that

The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

CHACMA BABOONS The Chacma baboons at Cape Point keep scientists intrigued, as they have adapted so well to their coastal habitat that they venture

out at low tide to eat mussels, rock lobsters, limpets and crabs. Seafood is widely considered brainfood, which would explain how these clever primates are able to help themselves to a picnic basket in your car. Remember to keep your car doors locked and keep a wide berth because they are wild animals. Chacma baboons are seen regularly along the Cape Point Route, and dassies (which look like over-sized guinea pigs but are, in fact, a distant relative of the elephant) and lizards can be found basking in the sun on mountainous rocks and crevices.

Keep your eyes peeled for small antelope such as the duiker and the steenbok when visiting sites such as the Rhodes Memorial, Cape Point and other nature reserves. The baboons are a common site when visiting Cape Point. GREAT WHITE SHARK

For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September.

How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). While some may only think of gemstones as the fabulous and expensive varieties like Diamonds and Tanzanite, there are also many other beautiful and unusual gemstones that are associated with Southern Africa – like Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pietersite, Malachite, Verdite, Blue lace Agate, Sodalite, and many more. OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive

production process making it costly as well as beautiful. Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in highend demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993. After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.

MORE INTERNATIONAL GLORY AS VAN RYN’S DISTILLERY CLAIMS YET ANOTHER AWARD The Best Distillery Tour in the world is on your doorstep at the Van Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch – this according to judges at the 2015 Distillery Experience Awards. Around the world, tourists visit distilleries while on holiday in search of unique cultural experiences, and with brandy’s long history in South Africa – it was brought here in the 1800s by Dutch sailors – there is much to tell, culminating in recent awards for Van Ryn’s such as Best Worldwide Brandy and International Brandy Producer of the Year. The Best Distillery Tour award celebrates the effectiveness of thoughtful distillery tours. Judges were in search of the most innovative tour that offers tourists an educational and memorable experience into the production and distillation of spirits. Judges commented that the Van Ryn’s team was clearly proud of their work. “They are obviously very focused on what they are doing and work hard to deliver it well. It is an impressive tour and great visitor numbers show that they offer visitors something quite different and interesting – such as the cooperage and the presentation on how barrels are put together. The tour also integrates well with other attractions on site. (Van Ryn’s)… offers informative and rich content delivered in an interesting way.” Van Ryn’s brand home manager Fre-Nay Brown said the award was fantastic news. “The team is extremely dedicated to creating a memorable and entertaining experience and we hope this award will encourage locals who have not yet visited us, to come and try our premium brandies, learn about the magic of distillation and discover for themselves why South African brandies are world-class.”
