app the bus
The official MyCiTi app, introduced to the public last year, have become a reliable source of commute planning and real time information for locals and travelers along Cape Towns’ Atlantic Seaboard. It is the perfect companion to the full, printed, MyCiTi map, available by Hello Cape Town on the Go. Once you figured out you destination and route number you can simply and quickly find the next bus due to arrive to the station near you. From Big Bay and Bloubergstrand all the way to Hout Bay, including all the routes in the inner city. From landing at the airport all the way to our wonderful Clifton and Camps Bay beaches, you can now top up your card and get everywhere safely and hustle free. MyCiTi app users make use of the personal planning tools to map out their journey; search for timetables and buses; calculate their trip fare; and, those with Android phones, are able to check their card balance. An aspect that has proved to be very helpful, especially to those who have time-sensitive schedules, are the live updates and notifications relating to timetables; routes or news alerts while they are travelling. When passengers view the bus timetables on the app, the location of buses are tracked and the scheduled times are updated with more reliable estimates of when each bus is due to arrive. Key Features Track your Bus: View timetables by route or stop with live updates so you know when your bus is due to arrive. Check your balance {for Android only} :Check your card balance so you always have enough value to travel. Find your closest stop: Find bus stops and departure times near you based on your phone’s GPS. Plan your journey: Plan your journey, including connections to other transport modes and with handy directions. Search using GPS, an address, a MyCiTi stop or point of interest. Save your favourite stops, routes or places: Personalise your dashboard by saving your favourite routes, stops and destinations for instant access. Receive service alerts: Keep up to date with the latest service alerts that affect you. Calculate your fare: Find out the distance-based fare for your next MyCiTi journey. spar believes the sa youth should be able to #livelimitless
From left to right: Shirnell Swartz, Zizipho Soldati, and Chantel Struwig. Johannesburg, 14 June 2021: The global pandemic has locked down our youth during a time of their lives where they are desperately looking to spread their wings. The past 18 months have tested the country’s resolve and demonstrated the incredible resilience of all sections of the South African society. While the South African youth’s wings have been clipped temporary, they have shown that they may be locked down, but they will not be held back. As part of the 2021 SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge’s campaign, we encourage South African women to #LiveLimitless and break down the barriers in their lives and redefine the limits that may exist. “What seemed impossible to us before has now become daily life—working from home and caring for our children at the same time? Impossible before, and now an average day,” said Alison Zweers, Managing Director of SPAR Western Cape. “Making deals and holding meetings online? A strange and unknown concept that we now take in our stride. What further proof could you need to show that limitations are purely mental and how living without limits is truly possible.” This year’s theme has a strong focus on the youth, and we will be supporting the Petals Projects, which advocates for a shamefree education for all young women. There is a stigma and shame attached to their menstrual cycle for many young girls in South Africa. Due to the lack of access
10

to simple hygiene products, they must make the difficult decision between embarrassment or education. Entry fees for this year’s Virtual Challenge will support SPAR’s Petals Project, which aims to donate packs of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls removing one of the limitations to their education. SPAR is also proud to partner with three young South African women who embody what it means to #LiveLimitless. Chantel Struwig, Zizipho Soldati and Shirnell Swartz are three exceptional young women that refused to allow the challenges and limitations they had to deal with from an early age to define them. Instead, they have broken these shackles turning their challenges into opportunities.
GENDER BASED VIOLENCE Gender Based Violence takes many Druk Myforms Niet Wine Estate
Struwig, born with a purplish-red mark covering most of her face, has become a vocal and virtual birthmark awareness advocate. Embracing her birthmark, the BCom Fashion student has overcome a negative selfimage and encourages others to do the same using her social media platforms. The 26-year-old Soldati is an award-winning filmmaker, content creator, social media influencer and aspiring model.
Physical Abuse
Soldati has not allowed a rare condition that causes very short limbs, called Phocomelia of the lower limbs, to put a limit on her dreams and ambitions. Swartz has excelled as a short speed skater representing South Africa at the Special Olympics, which has helped her discover her superb talent. She first got involved with Special Olympics South Africa when she was 13 years old at Casa De Sol School, where she found short speed skating.
Sexual Abuse
This year you will again be able to not only create your own race number online, but you can also create your own certificate of completion – check out sparvirtualchallenge.co.za and follow the few easy steps. Entrants residing outside South Africa will unfortunately not receive a virtual challenge pack due to postal restrictions and courier fees. Your entry fee will still contribute by donating a pack of sanitary products for a schoolgirl in need. After being named Africa’s leading tourist attraction by the World Travel Awards in 2020, Table Mountain has again been nominated in the same category this year. In addition, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has been nominated for the Responsible Tourism Award. The World Travel Awards has launched its #Together initiative to show appreciation and support for the global travel and tourism industry as a steppingstone on the road to recovery in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. #Together serves as an ongoing resource of information and insights from thought leaders and decision makers to unite the global industry, pool collective knowledge, and foster cooperation. “We are honored that the mountain has been nominated again – this time in two categories in which we have worked hard to excel. It has been a challenging year, but we continue to work behind the scenes to ensure that we remain true to our values. Being nominated and recognized serves as a huge motivation for our staff who are at the epicenter of the challenges that the industry faces,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC. This year, Table Mountain celebrates its 10th Anniversary of being named one of the New7Wonders of Nature, and will be competing against Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, Pyramids of Giza, Twiga Tours, Seas4Life and two fellow Cape Town Big Six attractions – Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront. The World Travel Awards celebrates excellence in the tourism and hospitality industries and the winners, who will be announced in November, are determined by a voting process. The team at TMACC are calling on all South Africans to cast their vote in support of the greater tourism industry in this year’s World Travel Awards. “Receiving an accolade of this magnitude would rejuvenate the country’s struggling tourism economy and restore hope in our sector,” says Parker. Voting for the World category closes at midnight on 9 August 2021. To vote for Table Mountain and the Cableway, visit www.worldtravelawards.com/vote. How can you cast your vote? • Register for an account to cast your vote at www.worldtravelawards.com/vote. • A verification email will be sent to your email account, and you will need to click the verification link to verify your email address before you can login to cast your vote • Remember, nominees are listed alphabetically within each award section. • Scroll down to the category for Africa’s leading tourist attraction to cast your vote for Table Mountain. • To vote for TMACC click on the Responsible Tourism Award category and select the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company.

a pool for your party A new SANParks Stokvels & Travel Clubs is taking the admin out of collecting and coordinating your next group travel in one of their amazing destinations. Whether you’re planning your next staycation or road tripping a bit further afield with family or friends, explore South Africa like never before with the latest travel initiative recently introduced by South African National Parks (SANParks). Stokvel: A traditionally South African savings pool where a group of individuals contribute an agreed-upon monthly sum. The group can make monthly pay-outs, or they could keep investing their savings and get a lump sum at the end of the year. The funds in the stokvel offer each member in the group an equal and fair benefit. Keeping with the stokvel theme, South African National Parks has launched an exciting new product for Stokvels & Travel Clubs. This service offers special payment terms and discounted rates at selected National Parks on particular dates throughout the year and across the country. Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing, Hapiloe Sello, said, “Stokvel & Travel Club membership boasts many different types of personalities and profiles, ranging from the ordinary grandmother to the high earning CEO’s of companies and large corporate and public sector institutions. There are over 800 000 registered Stokvels and even more formal and informal travel clubs/ groups in South Africa. Travel clubs that qualify include groups of people who have special interests such as hiking or biking but also just groups of friends and large families that enjoy group travel.” To qualify for the favourable payment terms, Stokvels and travel clubs have to register through the travel trade team in the Reservations department. Once registered with SANParks, the group will receive a client code that can be used whenever a booking is made. The client code will automatically qualify the group for favourable payment terms and special discounts. Sello says, “unlike the traditional group travel that allows a group of individuals travelling together, our new Stokvel & Travel Club product allows a group of ten or more people to contribute money towards a combined visit to our parks on a future date of their choice.”
SANParks is offering a 20% discount at the following destinations: Matyholweni Rest Camp in Addo Elephant National Park

The nice and cosy days encourage the Big 5 animals to roam around, giving you a better look, more chances to engage and better photo opportunities. take a working holiday in knysna and #wfk
Do you want to get away with the family during the school holidays or just need a break, but have deadlines and meetings that can’t wait? Come #WFK (work from Knysna) during the Knysna Oyster Festival, 9 to 18 July. “There are many online hubs, coffee shops and restaurants and accommodation establishments with excellent Internet connections in Knysna,” said Festival Coordinator Andrew Finn. “So you can easily honour your work commitments in between enjoying the fun of the festival and everything else the greater Knysna area has on offer.” Great care has been taken to ensure that all COVID-19 prevention protocols are adhered to. “Businesses are still operating, restaurants are open and exciting activities are on offer even on Alert Level 2 of the national lockdown, and they will be should the country move up to Alert Level 3,” said Knysna Executive Mayor Elrick van Aswegen. “While I urge all residents and visitors to wear their masks, continue social distancing and sanitizing, Knysna is open, and there is so much to do.” At the heart of the Garden Route National Park, the area is full of trails to explore and natural marvels to experience. These out-of-doors adventures are the perfect decompressor after a long video meeting. Hiking trials wind through the forest, coastal fynbos and plantations, climb down gorges and follow valley edges. You’ll cross natural streams, visit rock pools and waterfalls and marvel at the massive indigenous trees that spurred Knysna’s historic timber industry. Well-maintained picnic sites are equipped with braai- and ablution facilities, with seating and fresh water available at various sites. If you prefer exploring the forest on your bike, take on any of the five circular Harkerville mountain bike routes, or the linear Petrus-se-brand trail that starts at the Diepwalle Forrest office and ends at the Garden of Eden. Join a guided walking tour of Knysna’s most iconic heritage buildings and sites or find where X marks the spot with the Knysna Treasure Trail – a self-drive discovery of some of the town’s most prized gems. Cultural afficionados may look forward to art exhibitions in Sedgefield and Knysna, from local arts associations to an Old Masters collection by the Southern Cape Association of Visual Artists (SCAVA). For a more immersive, interactive experience, join the local art world by touring the public interactive art pieces to take a couple of selfies, working studios and galleries, or even taking a lesson. seeing the invisible
Renowned as the most beautiful botanical garden in Africa – Kirstenbosch will become the backdrop to the most expansive exhibition to date of contemporary artworks created with augmented reality (AR) technology. The exhibition titled – Seeing the Invisible – will premiere at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in September 2021 as one of 12 participating gardens across six countries. Seeing the Invisible features works by thirteen international artists such as Ai Weiwei, Refik Anadol, Isaac Julien CBE, Mohammed Kazem, Sigalit Landau, Sarah Meyohas, Pamela Rosenkranz, and Timur Si-Qin—including several artists’ first work in AR. Among the artists is El Anatsui a Ghanaian sculptor who is one of themost highly acclaimed artists in African history and foremost contemporary artists in the world. Visitors will engage with Seeing the Invisible via an app designed for the exhibition downloadable to smartphones and tablets. Forging new links between botanical gardens located in diverse biomes around the globe, the exhibition fosters collaboration between institutions, artists, and audiences, highlighting the power of art to connect people around the world. The first exhibition of its kind to be developed as a collaboration among botanical gardens around the world, Seeing the Invisible was initiated by the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens and Outset Contemporary Art Fund, and is co-curated by Hadas Maor and Tal Michael Haring. Seeing the Invisible will simultaneously premiere at: ● Denver Botanic Gardens (Denver, Colorado, USA) ● Eden Project (Cornwall, England) ● Jerusalem Botanical Gardens (Jerusalem, Israel) ● Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Cape Town, South Africa) ● Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (Sarasota, Florida, USA) ● Massachusetts Horticultural Society (Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA) ● Royal Botanical Gardens (Ontario, Canada) ● Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (Edinburgh, Scotland) ● Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Cranbourne Gardens (Cranbourne, Australia) ● Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens (Melbourne, Australia) ● San Diego Botanic Garden (San Diego, California, USA) ● Tucson Botanical Gardens (Tucson, Arizona, USA) Seeing the Invisible will place the same exhibition of commissioned artworks in analogous sites in 12 outdoor garden settings located in different biomes all around the world, creating parallels and contrasts between them. For example, the same work might be set within the historical tree lane of the Kirstenbosch Camphor Avenue; a group of tall Saguaro cacti in Tucson and among a lush forest of giant redwoods in Edinburgh. The AR nature of the exhibition allows for the creation of expansive, immersive works that engage with existing features of the natural landscape beyond the limitations of what is possible with physical artworks. Many of the works created for the exhibition will address related themes around nature, environment,

Werner Voigt, Kirstenbosch Curator said, “it’s an honour for Kirstenbosch to be included in the Seeing the Invisible global exhibition, it will be a first of its kind in a SANBI National Botanical Garden. We’re also pleased that it is an environmentally friendly exhibition, it will require no artworks to be shipped; no electronic hardware or structures to be set up in the garden – resulting in no disruption to the garden and no wastage of materials.” “This exhibition allows artists who have not previously worked in AR to expand on ideas that are central to their practice in entirely new ways,” said Seeing the Invisible Co-Curator Hadas Maor. “In doing so, the exhibition engages a wide range of visitors with contemporary artworks, including a number that address critical issues around the environment, through this exciting new medium.” “Coming out of the pandemic when outdoor experiences and nature have taken on a new meaning and gravity in our lives, this exhibition represents a fresh way for people to engage with art and nature simultaneously,” added Seeing the Invisible CoCurator Tal Michael Haring. “The interplay of these augmented reality works in vibrant natural settings breaks down the binary between what is often considered ‘natural’ versus ‘digital’, and in this way provides an exhibition experience that is much more connected to the way we live today.”

“Seeing the Invisible was born out of a collaboration during the pandemic with the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens that opened our eyes to the incredible opportunities for creating an entirely new kind of contemporary art experience within the setting of a botanical garden,” said Outset Contemporary Art Fund Co-Founder Candida Gertler OBE and Outset Contemporary Art Fund Israel Director Mirav Katri. “We are thrilled to be partnering with exceptional gardens from all across the world on this exhibition bridging the physical and digital worlds to create a new phygital model, bringing their expert knowledge of their field together with the most cuttingedge technology in contemporary art to develop a new exhibition format beyond the typical museum or gallery space.” “There is exceptional potential for botanical gardens, with their deep expertise in engaging diverse audiences in their complex work, to lead the way in creating new models for visitor experiences of contemporary art,” added Jerusalem Botanical Gardens Executive Director Hannah Rendell. “We are deeply gratified for the opportunity to forge new connections with partner gardens all across the globe, paving the way for what we hope will be many future collaborations.” Seeing the Invisible will be accessible via smartphone and tablet through the Seeing the Invisible app, which will be available for iPhone and Android in the App Store and Google Play. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks. This project has been made possible in partnership with The Jerusalem Foundation. Seeing the Invisible is co-curated by Hadas Maor and Tal Michael Haring, and organized by Jerusalem Botanical Gardens and Outset Contemporary Art Fund. family connect Netcare launches Family Connect Line to keep COVID-19 patients and their loved ones connected Dedicated personnel deployed to enhance communication between patients and families In mid-January 2021 Netcare launched a dedicated support line to keep next-of-kin informed on the status of their loved ones who have been hospitalised with COVID-19 and, where possible, to facilitate direct communication between patients and their families. This is in line with the healthcare group’s focus on placing each patient in hospital and their loved ones at the centre of the care provided to them. “The significant surge in people with COVID-19 infections requiring hospitalisation has forced us to focus our attention primarily on optimising our clinical resources to provide the best and safest care possible for all patients,” says Dr Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of Netcare. Unfortunately, as a result of the strain on our resources, communication with patients’ loved ones has at times been affected. “We understand that the hospitalisation of a loved one can be very stressful and anxiety provoking for the next-of-kin, especially during this time when, in order to mitigate the risk of the virus spreading in our hospitals, visitation has been suspended other than in exceptional cases. “As a result and in an effort to improve communication, we have set up the Netcare Family Connect Line. This makes it possible for families to engage with dedicated personnel, mainly social workers who we deployed for this purpose, for information on the status of their loved ones admitted with COVID-19 to any of our Netcare hospitals countrywide, whilst enabling us to maintain patient confidentiality,” Dr Friedland explained. “We understand how crucial it is for families to know how their loved ones in our care are doing, and this new service is dedicated to fulfilling this need,” Dr Friedland says. The number for the Netcare Family Connect Line is 0800 111 266. It will be operational weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 08:00 to 17:00. The Netcare Family Connect Line service enables patients’ next-of-kin to connect with one of our team of trained call centre professionals, who will facilitate the feedback process. A dedicated Netcare representative at the hospital where the patient is cared for will obtain information on the patient’s status, and will personally phone the family member to provide feedback. Messages to and from the family and patient will also be relayed where direct communication between the family and patient is not possible. Feedback will be provided within hours of the first enquiry and thereafter on a daily basis. Netcare has, since the start of the month, already recruited and deployed 30 social workers to support patients and their families in non-clinical patient liaison roles, which enables healthcare workers to focus solely on their clinical and nursing duties. Netcare hospitals are in the process of expanding the number of social workers to ensure that their services will continue over weekends too. “Already, we are seeing the profound value that the social workers’ efforts have brought for families through facilitating better communication in these unprecedented times, and we believe that this telephonic support service will enhance connection between patients and their loved ones even further.” How the Netcare Family Connect Line works To ensure that loved ones stay connected to patients admitted to Netcare hospitals with COVID-19, Netcare has established a national Family Connect Line, with dedicated Netcare personnel deployed as liaison between patients and their next-of-kin.
Here’s how to use the line: • Phone 0800 111 266 during the Netcare Family Connect Line’s operating hours: Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, 08:00 to 17:00. • Provide the call centre professional with the patient’s case number, which will enable them to immediately identify the patient and the hospital where he or she is being cared for, as well as with your name and surname. This case number is sent via sms to patients admitted to hospital as from Monday, 18 January 2021 as well as to those listed as their next-of-kin.

• Should you not have the patient’s case number, we will require the following information: - Patient’s name and surname - Patient’s ID number - Hospital where the patient is being cared for - Date of the patient’s admission - Your name and surname • The call centre professional will relay your enquiry to a dedicated Netcare representative – either a social worker or patient liaison officer – at the hospital where the patient is cared for, who will confirm with the patient that we may disclose information on their status to you. • The dedicated Netcare representative will contact you telephonically within hours, with information on your loved one’s status. In cases where the representative cannot facilitate direct contact between the patient and family, they will also relay any messages to and from the patient and family, and will continue to update you on the patient’s status on a daily basis during their hospital stay.

The farm is situated high on the cool south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which tempers the sun, ensuring that our grapes ripen slowly.
