WE’VE BEEN TO City Walk Saturdays Kick-Starts New Storytelling Route for Cape Town CBD Cape Town’s CBD was at play as the first ever City Walk Saturdays was launched by the Cape Town Partnership. The lively event featured Capoeira, tango and swing dance sessions, a tranquillity zone with meditation and yoga, jumping castles and kids storytelling time. Skateboarders whizzed through the space and curious squirrels watched as giant scrabble and pavement chalk unfolded. Onlookers were treated to special sound effects of the Sound Project and puppets entertained people along the route. Mime artists posed and a street studio by Here Be Dragons set the mood with sound. The City Walk is a new storytelling route that encompasses the Company’s Gardens, St George’s Mall and Fanwalk. It will be activated every third Saturday of the month with a City Walk Saturday – when events, installations, experimental ideas and art will create a buzz in the area. The next one take place on 20 June from 10am to 2pm. Says Cape Town Partnership’s, Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana; “The first City Walk Saturday was an indication of the potential to redefine public space in the Cape Town CBD as an inclusive space for all Capetonians. City Walk Saturdays is not an event created in isolation, but forms part of an evolving perspective shift of the way that Capetonians engage with each other and their city through public space.” The City Walk aims to surface elements like history, culture, public art and food as well as the formal and informal retail that are already on the walk but the Cape Town Partnership also hopes that citizens will come forward to give different perspectives along the walk. Says Makalima-Ngewana; “The City Walk must be a space in which people can see themselves and be part of creating and sharing their own stories. It’s about creating a space where conversations can happen and connections can be made between a diversity of people.” Locals and visitors will be able to access the City Walk area’s cultural, architectural and historical landmarks through the route map (available at outlets along the way and through Cape Town Tourism) and way-finding signs at all times (i.e not just limited to City Walk Saturdays). Local tour guides have also come on board to recognise the City Walk and it has been included into the Cape Town Big 6, which is now the Cape Town Big 7. This past weekend’s City Walk Saturday also encompassed an Instameet, with Instagrammers coming together to explore the Walk. The hashtag #walkcapetown trended at number one in South Africa on Saturday 18 April. For more information follow the Cape Town Partnership on Twitter @ctpartnership, on Facebook Cape Town Partnership, on Instagram as @CapeTownSoul or on www.capetownpartnership.co.za.

V TH EN E UE Nature’s Best! M O South African National Parks (SANParks) manages a system of parks which represents the N indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country. Of all the national TH parks, most have overnight tourist facilities, with an unrivalled variety of accommodation in arid, coastal, F

mountain and bushveld habitats.

National parks offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of adventure tourism opportunities including game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to cultural and historical experiences. Conferences can also be organised in many of the parks.

Conserving nature since 1926

Our Vision: A sustainable National Park System connecting society. Our Mission: To develop, expand, manage and promote a system of sustainable national parks that represents biodiversity and heritage assets, through innovation and best practice for the just and equitable benefit of current and future generations.

The national parks are: Groenkloof, Kruger, Table Mountain, Marakele, Golden Gate, Camdeboo, Mountain Zebra, Addo Elephant, Garden Route National Park (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, & Wilderness), Bontebok, Agulhas, West Coast, Karoo, Namaqua, Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld, Augrabies, Kgalagadi, Mapungubwe, Tankwa Karoo and Mokala. We’d love to welcome you to one of these parks and challenge you to go wild as you take a walk on the wild side of SANParks - SA’s natural heritage. AGULHAS The southernmost tip of Africa, official meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans, is a place of rugged beauty with rich cultural and natural heritage. Many national monuments are found in the area, such as the historic Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1849.

TABLE MOUNTAIN

AGULHAS NATIONAL PARK

BOULDERS PENGUIN COLONY Nestled in a sheltered cove between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, Boulders has become world famous for its thriving colony of African Penguins and magnificent wind sheltered, safe beaches.

BONTEBOK Bontebok National Park, just outside the historic town of Swellendam, lies at the foot of the majestic Langeberg Mountains and is bordered by the winding Breede River. The Park is home to over 200 Bontebok and many other animals including the Red Hartebees and Grey Rhebok. Although the smallest of SA’s 19 National Parks, it is by no means less diverse.

BONTEBOK NATIONAL PARK

TABLE MOUNTAIN AERIAL CABLEWAY Situated at the junction of two of earth’s most contrasting water masses – the cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm Agulhas current on the East Coast – the Cape of Good Hope is popularly perceived as the meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Geographically, however, the Indian Ocean joins the Atlantic Ocean at Agulhas National Park.

TANKWA KAROO Nestled within the succulent Karoo Biome, Tankwa National Park is home to rare and endangered plant species, rich endemic birdlife and diverse landscapes that are bound to take your breath away. Tankwa’s tranquility is one that must be experienced first-hand, as words simply do not suffice.

TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

WEST COAST The unique and diverse habitats of the Langebaan Lagoon and its salt marshes and wetlands, the granitic islands of Saldanha Bay with its large breeding populations of seabirds, the varied rocky and sandy shores of the coastal strip, the parabolic coastal dune fields and the terrestrial lowland fynbos communities on calcareous soils form the current extent – some 32 000 ha – of the West Coast National Park.

BLOEMENDAL RESTAURANT MEDIEVAL NIGHTS Bloemendal Restaurant is positioned on top of one of the highest hills in the Northern Suburbs. With a panoramic view of 270° the Cape Peninsula, you are sure to experience the best sunset moments ever... On arrival to the Medieval Night experience guest will be helped by the cavaliers (waitrons) to a glass of sweet wine or juice and help them to get dressed in the proper medieval gear, they will no longer be known as guests but Lords and ladies. All the lords and ladies will then have a chance to get a drink, mingle before the proceedings starts. No glasses are allowed. The court Jester will brief the king and queen in advance before he enters the court and introduce himself to the “peasants” who are visiting the kingdom. In good faith they will obey and respect the chosen king and queen. Whilst explaining the rules the Jester will make a few jokes and throw the peasants (lords and ladies behaving badly or not listening) into the dungeon or stocks. When the rules are done starters will be served and the Jester will leave the venue until everyone has had starters. The jester will return after starters have been served and then proceed. If there are speeches it is preferred that it is to be done after starters to get all the formal proceedings done as the medieval party is about letting your hair down and enjoying your selves. After that the King and Queen will have a chance to throw peasants

into the dungeons, have them sing songs for them and congratulate Lords and Ladies who have impressed them so far by drowning them in a goblet of wine. We will then move on to main course and it is tradition that before main course is served the king and queen will be entertained by each table performing a song, the table who does this the best will receive main course first. The Jester will once again leave the court. Once main course is finished the Jester will return and over throw the kingdom so that the dance floor can be opened. WEEKEND SCENE GREAT GATHERINGS

The Treetop Canopy Walkway In celebration of its Centenary (1913- 2013), Kirstenbosch botanical gardens chose to add this spectacular project that would be a unique and permanent feature to the venue. This special walkway is a perfect means to mark the occasion. It was built purely from bequest money which has been left to Kirstenbosch by numerous donors, but predominantly Mary Mullins. It is also a fantastic opportunity to take people into the treetops, a place with a distinctive ecology that is generally inaccessible. From here people can experience the forest from high above the ground and also see birds and other animals that are generally elusive. One can experience an entirely new world of tree dynamics - how the treetops move in the wind and how the crowns of the trees interact with one another. The walkway then bursts through and above the canopy, giving you an impression of what it is like to be above the forest. At this point, the walkway provides spectacular 360 degree vistas comprising of Cape Town and the surrounding majestic mountain slopes. Adding to the exceptionality of this modern feature is the fact that the walkway is fully wheelchair accessible. The design of the walkway is envisaged as a sinuous, lightweight, non-intrusive steel structure, which supports a slatted timber deck, and snakes its way into, through and over the ever-changing tree canopy. The structure, comprising ribs and a structural spine, inspired by a snake’s, is supported on slender steel columns intertwined with creepers. On site, the pieces were bolted together and mounted on top of long columns much like a giant mechanic set. The walkway takes advantage of the sloping ground and starts and ends within the arboretum, so there is almost no visual impact from the lawns and walks in the garden. There are no mechanical or electrical aspects to the walk and the gentle gradients will easily raise visitors to over 11 meters above ground and is about a 130 meters long. There is no extra charge for this added feature. A normal garden entry ticket is all that is required.

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND ELEPHANT RIDES

CAPE FUR SEAL

Join the southern-most elephants in the world at Knysna Elephant Park. Where a resident family of African elephants and world-class guides will unravel the sad and mystical story of the Knysna forest elephants… The Park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, who live in a controlled, free-range environment in the heart of the famous Garden Route.

Situated only 8 nautical miles (about 16km) from Simon’s Town, Seal Island is home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting.

Their elephants are orphans rescued from culling operations. They play a vital role in closing the gap between man and animal, allowing us to better understand the plight of the African Elephant and that of their peers in the Knysna Forest. Visitors leave the park with a sense of awe for these magnificent animals – they’ve been ‘touched by an elephant.’ In order to cater for all preferences they have a range of inspiring elephant experiences: • Daily Tours provide for a shorter experience of meeting, feeding and interacting with the gentle giants. • Elephant Back Rides and Walks allow for longer and more personal interaction. • Exclusive Sunrise/Sunset Safaris and Sundowner Safaris are the private and intimate encounters. • Sleeping with the Elephants in the unique Elephant Lodge is the ultimate experience where you get to spend all day and all night soaking up all the sights, sounds and delights of the elephant world! Sharks are iconic and magnificent creatures. Experience a great white shark up close and personal with a shark diving or shark viewing tour (you don’t have to get in the cage!) and you do not need a scuba diving certificate to shark cage dive. Great White Shark, Cage Diving takes place from April to September in False Bay (departs from Simon’s Town) and all year round from Gansbaai (2 hours from Cape Town).

l Hello Cape Town June 2015

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations. The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island, out of Hout Bay Harbour, are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. BIG 5 SAFARI The phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. African Big Five Game Species: African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana): The African elephant is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears. There are two distinct species of African

elephant: African forest elephant (Loxodontacyclotis) and the African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana). Black rhinoceros (Dicerosbicornis):The black rhinoceros is a large, thick-skinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Rhinoceros may refer to either black or white rhinoceros. African cape buffalo (Synceruscaffer): The African or cape buffalo is a large horned bovid. Buffalo are sometimes reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal, although the same claim is also made of hippos and crocodiles. It is considered the most dangerous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers. Lion (Pantheraleo): The lion is a large carnivorous feline of Africa and northwest India, having a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. A lion may attack without provocation, and is considered by many to be the best of the Big Five. Lions habituate the savanna where tall grasses, shrubs and bushes obscure and provide them cover and camouflage. This thick undergrowth is commonly referred to as jess. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural cover to stalk close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey. Lions do not generally avoid confrontation, but will usually face the challenger. Lions are unpredictable and may charge when sufficiently annoyed or confronted by danger. Leopard (Pantherapardus): The leopard is a large, carnivorous feline having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. They are wary of humans and will take flight in the face of danger. The leopard is solitary by nature, and is most active between sunset and sunrise, although it may hunt during the day in some areas. Leopards can be found in

the savanna grasslands, brush land and forested areas in Africa. The male leopard is less than half the size of a male lion. The leopard is the smallest of the big cats, and rarely exceeds 200 lb (91 kg). A visit to a South African reserve will, most likely, allow seeing not only the big 5 but other habitants of the African bush. Although the stock will be different between various reserves you’ll be able to watch: Giraffes, Elands, Springbok, Hippopotamus and Zebras.

CAPE PENINSULA BABOONS The Baboon Matters Trust comprises a handful of dedicated volunteers who are at the forefront of baboon conservation in South Africa. The goals of the trust include raising awareness for the plight of baboons as well as education and training so that sustainable solutions can be found for areas of conflict between man and baboon. On a practical level the trust makes provision for the rescue and care of injured or sick baboons, and aims to support rehabilitation centres that focus their attention on baboons. Cape Species: The Chacma Baboon (Papioursinus), also known as the Cape Baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. With a body length of up to 115 cm and a weight from 15 to 31 kg, it is among the largest and heaviest baboon species. The Chacma is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck. Unlike the northern baboon species (the Guinea, Hamadryas, and Olive Baboons), Chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward sloping face. Males can have canine teeth as long as 2 inches (longer than a lion’s canine teeth). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, males being considerably larger than females. The Chacma Baboon is found in southern Africa, ranging from South Africa north to Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. Size and color vary within that range. Chacmas usually live in social groups composed of multiple adult males, adult females, and their offspring. Occasionally, however, very small groups form that include only a single adult male and several adult females. Chacma troops are characterized by a dominance hierarchy. Female ranking within the troop is inherited through the mother and remains quite fixed, while male ranking is tenuous and changes often. Chacmas are unusual among baboons in that neither males nor females form strong relationships with members of the same sex. Instead, the strongest social bonds are often between unrelated adult males and females. (Wikipedia) BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINS A visit to the famous Boulders Beach penguins should be part of every Cape Town itinerary. The penguins from this growing colony allow for close encounters with these famous sea birds - and most tourists fall helplessly in love with them. The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and these aquatic flightless birds are listed as endangered. The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy part of the penguins’ diet. Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town. It’s easily accessible by bus, car, taxi or train.

COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

SHOPPING PRECIOUS STONES Southern Africa is often considered the “gemstone capital of the world” as almost half of the world’s gemstones are found in this part of the world. While some may only think of gemstones as the fabulous and expensive varieties like Diamonds and Tanzanite, there are also many other beautiful and unusual gemstones that are associated with Southern Africa – like Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pietersite, Malachite, Verdite, Blue lace Agate, Sodalite, and many more. One of the most popular and convenient places to experience the amazing beauty and variety of gemstones that are found and crafted locally is right here in the V&A Waterfront at the popular Scratch Patch and Mineral World in Dock Road next to the parking garage, and just down from the Two Oceans Aquarium. The Scratch Patch has become worldfamous as a place where you can have loads of fun “scratching” for your favourite gemstones from hundreds of thousands of tumble-polished stones that quite literally cover the floor. This is a truly original concept that has been copied in other parts of the world. According to how many gemstones you wish to take home, visitors have a choice from a small bag to a large cup container. At the Mineral World factory shop you can see an incredible range of gemstone items including stone carvings and other “art” pieces; high-quality “investment” gems (like Tanzanite and Diamonds); jewellery of all kinds; and lots of inexpensive gemstone items that make ideal take-home-gifts. You will also discover a large range of mineral specimens, rough gemstone pieces, and fossils that will fascinate you and bring out the geologist in you! Besides the outlet at the V&A Waterfront, there are also Scratch Patch/Mineral World branches at Simon’s Town (Dido Valley Road, and also the site of the Topstones tumble-polishing and gem-crafting factory), and at the West Coast Ostrich Farm (Van Schoorsdrif Road, just off the N7). So, make sure that you discover the magic of gemstones! Scratch Patch & Mineral World, 1 Dock Road (next to the parking garage and near the Aquarium). Tel 021 419 9429.

OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive

production process making it costly as well as beautiful. Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in highend demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993. After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.

Always close, Always fresh, Always convenient.

That’s why I love my SPAR!

They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and elegancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted. They spent months looking for and visiting factories all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals. In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone. Ostrich leather and Mohair products can be found at Karoo Classics. See their ad in our Handmade Section. Hello Cape Town June 2015 l

These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against

the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit www.sanparks.org BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that

MORE INTERNATIONAL GLORY AS VAN RYN’S DISTILLERY CLAIMS YET ANOTHER AWARD The Best Distillery Tour in the world is on your doorstep at the Van Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch – this according to judges at the 2015 Distillery Experience Awards. Around the world, tourists visit distilleries while on holiday in search of unique cultural experiences, and with brandy’s long history in South Africa – it was brought here in the 1800s by Dutch sailors – there is much to tell, culminating in recent awards for Van Ryn’s such as Best Worldwide Brandy and International Brandy Producer of the Year. The Best Distillery Tour award celebrates the effectiveness of thoughtful distillery tours. Judges were in search of the most innovative tour that offers tourists an educational and memorable experience into the production and distillation of spirits. Judges commented that the Van Ryn’s team was clearly proud of their work. “They are obviously very focused on what they are doing and work hard to deliver it well. It is an impressive tour and great visitor numbers show that they offer visitors something quite different and interesting – such as the cooperage and the presentation on how barrels are put together. The tour also integrates well with other attractions on site. (Van Ryn’s)… offers informative and rich content delivered in an interesting way.” Van Ryn’s brand home manager Fre-Nay Brown said the award was fantastic news. “The team is extremely dedicated to creating a memorable and entertaining experience and we hope this award will encourage locals who have not yet visited us, to come and try our premium brandies, learn about the magic of distillation and discover for themselves why South African brandies are world-class.”
