ON STAGE BURN THE FLOOR: FIRE IN THE BALLROOM The show that revolutionised the image of dance, launching the many T.V. reality shows such as Dancing with the Stars. With its reputation as the world’s toughest dance show, the dancers are handpicked to embrace a new Latin American feel, including Johannes Radebe, recently runner-up with his celebrity partner Leigh-Anne Williams in Strictly Come Dancing SA. This gloriously sinful new edition of the show, Fire in The Ballroom, is still focused on its ballroom origins, but promises to blow the roof off the theatre, including music from Santana, Janis Joplin, Christine Aguilera and Led Zeppelin. Baxter Theatre, Till 5 June, Tickets R190 - R310 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi THE ECHO OF A NOISE
Now in his 70th year, Pieter-Dirk doesn`t glance back at the successes and failures that have strengthened his belief in a constant improvement of his work, but at those small signposts that throughout his life subconsciously pointed him in a right and original direction. Theatre on the Bay, Till 18 June, Tickets R100 - R160 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi CAPE CONSORT’S DIDO & AENEAS Fully-staged opera, a production of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (1688). The Consort has joined forces with renowned theatre-maker Mari Borstlap for an exciting new rendering of this classical love story under the musical leadership of Hans Huyssen, with the same attention to historically informed musical performance which the Consort has become celebrated for over the past five years. In this creative staging by Borstlap the story of a Carthaginian queen and her Trojan hero, an ancestor of Rome’s founders, is

transplanted to the present day. Dido is a mentally unstable young woman confined to the Carthage Asylum after the loss of her lover Aeneas, who has departed for Rome in pursuit of his career. Under the watchful eye of Belinda, matron of the asylum, Dido suffers terrible flashbacks of her lost love and horrible visions of the fateful forces that have overwhelmed her life. Distraught, Dido is pushed to the precipice, and her emotional turmoil culminates in the famous “Dido’s Lament”. The Fugard, 2 - 5 June, Tickets R150 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi. A VOICE I CANNOT SILENCE Alan Paton’s internationally recognised gifts for lyric verse, evocative prose, and vibrant story telling are combined to create a richly dramatic portrait and a moving and empathetic examination of the invaluable contribution made by the author of Cry, The Beloved Country, who was described by Douglas Livingstone as “a lighthouse in the South African twilight” during the dark decades leading up to the country’s constitutional democracy.
being confirmed as one of the acts for the acclaimed Cape Town International Jazz festival in 2016, the quintet is looking forward to premiering some new material. Artscape Theatre, 5 - 14 May, Tickets R40 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN Tim Plewman once again dons the Caveman’s skins and steps onto stage to add to the longest-running and most successful solo comedy in SA theatre history. By Rob Becker and described as the perfect date comedy, “Caveman” is so much more than a laugh a minute show, it’s a philosophy rapped in a tour de force performance.
The play - sometimes satirical, often wryly amusing, redolent with Paton’s profound love of nature and the devout Anglicanism that sustained him - reveals a complex man who was haunted by the injustices of South African society as much as by the complexities of his own nature and whose entire existence and work was dedicated to equality, alleviation of human suffering, and to what he called “the grand theories of freedom and responsibility.” The Fugard , 7 - 25 June, Tickets R120 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mob BENJAMIN JEPHTA QUINTET This core quintet plays music drawing on gospel and South African roots and features Benjamin Jephta (bassist and composer), Kyle Shepherd (2014 Standard Bank Young Artist) (piano), Marcus Wyatt (trumpet), Sisonke Xonti (sax) and Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums). The night will also feature other young artists. Benjamin has already made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s premier jazz double bass and electric bass players having performed with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, Hugh Masekela and Feya Faku. After releasing his debut album ‘Homecoming’ earlier this year and

the Tokyo World Song Festival; the Sarie Award-winning song ‘Who’s That Girl?’, and ‘Cry to Me’ from the film ‘Katrina’, which always gets a standing ovation before Derek has even finished singing! And there’ll be all those funny, silly, fall-over-laughing-‘cos-they’re-so-daftsongs that will cheer you up, like ‘The Lotto Song’, ‘My Nose Is Running Money and I’ll Blow It All On You’ and ‘I Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore’.
Theatre on the Bay, 20 - 25 June, Tickets R100 - R180 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL
Artscape Theatre, , 21 June - 16 July, Tickets R190 - R390 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi THE FIREBIRD The show is a contemporary puppet and dance performance set to Igor Stravinsky’s original score.
Featuring the drama of Bohemian Rhapsody; the swinging cool of I Get A Kick out Of You; the wicked wit of Don’t Put Your Daughter On the Stage Mrs Worthington; the romance of Ordinary People; the showbizz razzle-dazzle of Puttin’ On the Ritz; the groove and joy of Isn’t She Lovely; and the toe- tapping stride of Aint Misbehaving.
This extraordinary show, two years in the making, features giant puppets designed by a team of artists who worked in the War Horse puppet studio. The Firebird’s strength lies in the combination of music, dance and puppetry to bring to the stage a battle between forces that is both epic and highly personal. Evoking themes of fear and passion, inspiration and destruction, The Firebird holds strong resonance with South African society and with the task each one of us faces to find and embrace our own power. Ian takes 8 of the great – Stevie Wonder, Noël Coward, John Legend, Irving Berlin, Freddy Mercury, Fats Waller, Cole Porter and Billy Joel – an outstanding octave of pianistic power, and together with a driving percussionist and a sexy thrumming double bassist, shares his love for these iconic creators. WE’VE BEEN TO Shimmy Beach Club, South Africa’s leading venue, has announced its new mouthwatering and elegant a la carte menu winter menu! Old favourites, such as the lamb shank pot pie, Moodie burger and the infamous Shimmy seafood platter remain on the menu, bolstered by new items like the slow braised mutton curry roti, seared Indonesian marinated tuna steak, prawns Nacional and chimichurri marinated baby chicken. Executive Chef, Adrian Cook says patrons can expect the usual Italian and Mediterranean influences that Shimmy is known for. “The new menu is full of slow food from Umbria and includes warm, rich and hearty, countrystyle comfort food; meals that take you back to home and your childhood.” Chef Adrian already knows which dish will be the firm favourite. “Our guests are going to love the cider braised pork belly. It’s something I enjoy cooking and sharing with friends and family.”
SHIMMY BEACH CLUBS’ WINTER MENU
Restaurant clients can also look forward to more complex dishes with intricate flavours, such as the venison loin wrapped in pancetta. Those following a Banting diet, can order a sushi or pizza option. There are several surprises on the dessert list including key lime pie, Cape brandy pudding, homemade Granny Smith apple pie and a decadent Nutella pizza, with strawberries and mascarpone. To further indulge in their sumptuous menu, Shimmy Beach Club and Hennessy have joined forces to create a luxuriant afterdinner indulgence box, paired with either the Hennessy Privilège VSOP or Hennessy XO cognac. The decadent box consists of: • A chocolate cigar – a crisp chocolate tuile filled with smoked chocolate mousse served with shavings • Three chocolate truffles – decadent bite-sized truffles in white, dark and milk flavour. • A thick and rich Hennessy hot chocolate drink • A serve of Hennessy Cognac – choose from XO or VSOP.
Guests can finish a hearty winter meal the smoky, bitter and sweet flavours, and complex varying textures that Hennessy cognac is so famous for. The winter menu is available in the restaurant from 4 May to the end of August 2016. WE’VE SEEN The Rudimentals is a Reggae/Dancehall/Dub and fusion outfit, based here the creative hub of Cape Town. The Rudimentals frontline singers features 4 of the most highly skilled and electrifying performers in the local industry and their legendary status has been earned from over 15 years of positive contributions to the local music industry. Hello Cape Town had to chance to grab a cuppa with Whosane, Khaos & King Lasbash (and a call to Teboes) for a catch up – after many, many laughs, spilled teas and debates later, this is what they had to say: Where did ‘The Rudimentals’ come from? Teboes: The Rudimentals actually comes from the history of old Jamaican gangsters – they were called ‘Rude Boys’ or ‘Rudies’. They were literally musical gangsters. Smart guys, not violent. They played two-toned music in era where there was the beginning of the great mixture of black & white music. As you see with our members, the band is the same *laughs* With such a large band – who is responsible for the song writing process? Khaos: Kingston, Jamaica represent! All the vocalists & the producer is responsible for the process. The Producer write music plays the track for us, then we all sit down and write the lyrics collectively. We do sometimes have disagreements in terms of the direction & message, but end of the day what is important is the melody so we always compromise for what’s best for the music *chuckles* Describe your typical fan? Whosane, Brookyn: There is a clash of cultures: you have your die-hard rudies - Ska, hippy festival reggae, and then you have your urbanites who want your electro hard-hitting lyrics and dance-hall vibes with innovative high-energy lyrics. So we take the location of where we perform in consideration when we play. We have a range of fans to cater to! Who would you choose to work with and why? King Labash from Zimbabwe, representing to the fullest! Maybe Maroon 5? Definitely Woolf Mother, I’d love to feature in festivals with big bands like those. Its great through, next week we have tour to Swaziland for the Zakifo Musik Festival and then Durban for MTN Bushfire Music Festival, so I am looking forward to performing and ‘edutaining’educating the fans. By that I mean educating and entertaining. Khaos: Damian Marley, Baby Sham, Major Lazer - but don’t worry, we’ll get there one day. We are working on that *chuckles* Whosane: Africa is the future, so it would be dope to be on a tour with someone like Blitz the Ambassador and M.anifest from Ghana, Nneka from Nigeria from K’naan from Somalia etc. So like a dope world African progressive bum-shaking thought-provoking show *laughs* It’s been said that music industry has reached an all-time low with digital music on the rise, especially with the increase of online downloading platforms.
22
l Hello Cape Town June 2016
What are your views? Khaos: You can’t stop it, so make it free. At the end of the day it’s important to get your music out there and for people to hear the music - it’s the opportunity to get shows. Most musicians now days make their money off performances. It’s difficult for start-ups to get on the radios – either they don’t have the money or the stations aren’t interested. By sending it out, people start hearing it and it becomes what’s hot so stations have to play it! King Lasbash: There is a massive advantage in giving out free music in that people get to know the band and will want to watch us perform. The more that is downloaded and heard, the more we are played, the better it is. Whosane: There will still be the novelty in CDs like there are in books, people still want the crinkle of the page. Digitisation of music has become a business cards, so you might lose sales on CDs, but you’ll get money off performances. It’s like a grassroots positive incentive to give out music for free to gain licencing. I’m sure you guys must know about the ‘90% local music on radio’ initiative? Playing 90% local content will give musicians an opportunity to make a living creating music. What are your thoughts? How do think this will impact SA? Whosane: I’m not entirely convinced. Local music should just be played be organically, it shouldn’t be mandated. If it naturally occurres, it creates natural coolness, so it’s played more. Artists should aspire to play elsewhere in the world - you become more desirable as becoming that exotic factor! King Lasbash: I believe it’s good for the artist. We have many talented youths that cannot be heard - especially from the ghettos - because Rhianna ‘Work Work Work’ is playing *laughs*, they can’t afford to make it! *chuckles* It is to benefit locals first. It happened in Zim first and that’s why I am sitting here now. It’s a good move to have that platform and I believe the radio stations know good quality music and will select what is best. Khaos: I think 90% is too much, maybe 60-40%. I’m concerned about start-ups or people who think they can perform being taking advantage from people who claim to be ‘producers’ – anyone with a laptop and the right programme can go ahead and call themselves that, but they don’t know anything about music! Together you

have a non-musician with a fake producer pushing songs to the radio stations. It should happen naturally. What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune? Khaos: To travel world & play our music with the influence of Africa to everyone. King Lasbash: We are a man on a mission with a vision! –To reach every human in the world and ‘edutain’ them with our music. We are one people, no matter who you are, or what colour you are, we need to stand as one. H: To unite and do good. We are bringing afro-electric reggae, Pan-African music. Our music is relevant and no one is doing what we are doing. We want to influence and give back with conscious righteous lyrics. There is so much fragmentation which brings more despair. We want to highlight the good and focus on positivity, bring the universalities of love and togetherness. - TLR

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND Africa’s seven major vegetation zones. This reserve also incorporates the largest coastal dune field in the southern hemisphere. South Africa has a vast system of natural reserves to protect indigenous plants, animals, landscapes and cultural heritage. They range from the vast flagship Kruger National Park – larger than some countries – to the tiny Bontebok National Park in the Western Cape. These are managed by South Africa National Parks, established by the government in 1926 and one of the world’s leading conservation and scientific research bodies. • South African National Parks: www.sanparks.co.za National parks offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of adventure tourism opportunities including game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to cultural and historical experiences. Fifteen of South Africa’s 21 national parks offer park or camp-run accommodation. Most parks and rest-camps have retail facilities and restaurants.
AGULHAS NATIONAL PARK Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa, at 34° 49’ 58” south and 20° 00’ 12’’ east, a point marked with a cairn. Found in the Western Cape, the park captures the adventure of sailing around the tip of the continent, crossing from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean.
the fact that the Richtersveld has the world’s richest desert flora. Miniature rock gardens, perfectly designed by nature, cling precariously to cliff faces. Tiny succulents, mere pinpoints against a backdrop of surreal rock formations, revel in the moisture brought by the early morning fog rolling in from the cold Atlantic Ocean.
The Agulhas area contains representatives of unique vegetation such as limestone fynbos. Although most species bloom between May and September, there are flowers to be enjoyed in any season. Among the mysteries associated with this region is the legendary Cape of Storms, which wrecked many ships en route to the east via Cape Agulhas. Shipwrecks dot the coastline - of the Zoetendal, Birkenhead and Armiston - with key artefacts from the vessels on display at the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum.
ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK
Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep away inland from the Orange River give way to the vast mountain desert that is the |Ai- |Ais/Richtersveld National Park, an area managed jointly by the local Nama people and the South African National Parks. A staggering assortment of plant life, some species occurring nowhere else, is to be found here, with gnarled quiver trees, tall aloes and the tall “half-mens” plant keeping vigil over this inscrutable landscape. Animals to look out for are the rock hyrax, jackal buzzard and the Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. The park is only accessible by 4x4 vehicles or vehicles with high clearances. AUGRABIES FALLS NATIONAL PARK
Deep in the shadows of the dense bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant National Park. Originally proclaimed in 1931 with only 11 elephants, today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 450 of the animals - the densest elephant population on earth. Other wildlife includes the Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo. A unique combination of the Big Seven - elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, whales and great white sharks - makes the park a major attraction, as does its rich heritage of archaeological and historical sites. The park also contains five of South

Ancient people also left their mark on the landscape. Archaeological middens indicate a successful hunter-gathering culture in harmony with its natural environment, and a cultural heritage that dates back thousands of years to when the Khoi-Khoi people trapped fish using ingeniously constructed tidal traps. The remains of ancient stone fish traps can be seen to the east of the Cape Agulhas lighthouse, the second-oldest working lighthouse in southern Africa, which houses a unique lighthouse museum. |AI-|AIS / RICHTERSVELD TRANSFRONTIER NATIONAL PARK A desolate and forbidding landscape belies
Few sights are as breathtaking or a sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56m Augrabies waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood. The Khoi people called it “Aukoerebis”, or place of Great Noise, as this powerful flow of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings characterised by the 18km abyss of the Orange River gorge in the far
Northern Cape. Picturesque names such as Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner are descriptive of this rocky region. Klipspringer and kokerboom (quiver trees) stand in stark silhouette against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt ultimately survive. The park, which is on both the northern and southern sides of the Orange River, provides sanctuary to a diversity of species, from the smallest succulents, birds and reptiles to springbok, gemsbok and giraffe.
where erosion of the softer sedimentary beds has left dolerite pillars which rise to heights of 90m to 120m. GOLDEN GATE HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park’s sandstone cliffs.
BONTEBOK NATIONAL PARK
In the next months we will continue to introduce the other South African National Parks. This 11 633ha of unique environment is true highland habitat, providing home to a variety of mammals - black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell’s zebra - and birds, including the rare bearded vulture (lammergeier) and the equally rare bald ibis, which breed on the ledges in the sandstone cliffs.
The park boasts proud achievements in biodiversity conservation, from the endangered fynbos veld type, coastal renosterveld, to the namesake bontebok. Once these colourful antelope numbered a mere 17, now the population sits at around 3 000. The park also offers bird watchers over 200 bird species. CAMDEBOO NATIONAL PARK Formed hundreds of millions of years ago, the Karoo is one of the great natural wonders of the world. Camdeboo National Park provides the visitor with insights into the unique landscape and ecosystem, not to mention awesome scenic beauty. A unique feature of the park is its location, practically surrounding the historic town of Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. Most of the park lies up against the foothills of the Sneeuberg range, with the Nqweba Dam within the park. At some places, dolerites form jointed pillars - the best examples of which are found in the Valley of Desolation
Golden Gate, Mapungubwe and Marakele make up the northern cluster, which features savannah, thornveld or grasslands. Mountains are a feature of some. Mapungubwe is the location of another Unesco World Heritage Site. The full article about South Africa’s national Parks was compiled by Mary Alexander for www.southafrica.info (Updated December 2015)
The black stork and pygmy falcon are among the special birds in the park.
Bontebok National Park in the Western Cape is a place of beauty and peaceful charm, set against the majestic Langeberg Mountains. A part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site, the park always offers something in bloom.
The Garden Route cluster lies in the picturesque Garden Route on South Africa’s southern coast, and features a range of habitats including rocky shorelines, temperate forests, lakes, rivers, estuaries and fynbos. Tsitsikamma and Wilderness fall into this cluster, as does the Knysna Marine Protected Area.
IN AND AROUND CAPE TOWN
PARK CLUSTERS South Africa’s national parks are grouped in ecological clusters. The Kruger National Park is characterised by combinations of savannah, thornveld and woodland eco-zones. The arid cluster is characterised by arid climate, sparse vegetation and sandy soils, and consists of parks in the Northern Cape - Augrabies Falls, Namaqua, Kgalagadi Transfrontier, Mokala and |Ai-|Ais Richtersveld. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape is a Unesco World Heritage site. The Cape cluster parks are those within the south-western reaches of the Western Cape: the Bontebok, Table Mountain, Tankwa Karoo, Agulhas and West Coast national parks. Home to the endemic Cape Floral Region, also a World Heritage Site, these parks feature mountainous, coastal, riverine or estuarine habitats. Addo, Karoo, Camdeboo and Mountain Zebra National Parks fall into the frontier cluster, which is located in the Eastern Cape. They include a variety of habitats across the parks, ranging from Nama-Karoo, grassland, montane, forest, valley thicket, fynbos and coastline.
Table Mountain – also beloved as one of South Africa’s National Parks, is truly one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s unique eco-systems is rare in the sense that the park thrives and integrates with a pulsating and continuously developing city, Cape Town. The scenic views are breathtaking as it offers a sweeping view of Cape Town and Table Bay. Within the boundaries of Table Mountain National Park, you are able to visit the adorable Boulders Penguin Colony, or perhaps come across the mischievous Cape Peninsula Baboons on your way to the Cape of Good Hope! During Spring and Summer, you’ll have the opportunity so take-in the sights of one or more verities of the beautiful Western Cape national flower: The Protea. Surrounding the peninsula in the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Fur Seal colonies can be visited either from Hout Bay harbour, Simon’s Town, or a little bit down the shores of Gansbaai – and for those adventure seekers, the world’s best shark cage diving can be experienced in these waters!

HELLO DOCTOR Health tips for travellers There’s not much that can spoil a holiday more than feeling off-colour, and very little that can dull the pleasure of your holiday memories more than being ill far from home. If you are visiting South Africa, there are a number of health issues you should be aware of, particularly if you’re from the northern hemisphere.

However, while there are risks anywhere you travel, South Africa has a relatively salubrious climate and our levels of hygiene, health care, and water treatment make it a pretty safe destination. Inoculations If you’re an adult, you won’t need any inoculations unless you’re travelling from a yellow-fever endemic area (the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America), in which case you will need certification to prove your inoculation status when you arrive in South Africa.

It is recommended that you have the required inoculations four to six weeks before you travel to South Africa. A yellow fever inoculation certificate only becomes valid 10 days after inoculation – after which it remains valid for 10 years. Pharmacies are well stocked, and equivalents to most international medicines are available. Pharmacists may not dispense Schedule 3 drugs and up without a prescription, so visitors on chronic medication should carry their own prescription. It is a good idea to take out comprehensive medical insurance before travelling to South Africa as private medical care can be expensive. The sun We have a warm sunny climate and pollution and ozone layer damage has led to extremely high UVA and UVB penetration over South Africa. Protecting yourself against the harsh sun with sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses is essential – especially between 10am and 4pm, and regardless

You can still get sunburned even if you have a dark complexion - especially if you are from a cooler climate and have not had much exposure to the sun. Use the highest possible UV protection It is the UVA rays (that don’t cause burning) that you are trying to block out. Ideally you should aim for an SPF of 30 or more to offer protection. Can I drink the water? High-quality tap (faucet) water is available in South Africa’s urban areas, but not all water in rural areas is safe to drink straight from the tap. In some areas, the water is mineral-rich, and you may experience a bit of gastric distress for a day or two until you get used to it. Bottled mineral water, both sparkling and still, is readily available in most places. Drinking water straight from rivers and streams could put you at risk of waterborne diseases – especially downstream of human settlements. The water in mountain streams, however, is usually pure and wonderful. In the Cape, particularly, the water contains humic acid, which stains it the colour of diluted Coca - Cola – this is absolutely harmless, and the water is wonderful. You may also find this colouring in tap water in some areas. It’s fine – it just looks a bit weird in the bath. The responsibility to provide clean water rests with local water services authorities, which regularly monitor the quality of drinking water. They are rated by the Department of Water Affairs according to the Blue Drop Certification System.
Named after cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Christiaan Barnard who performed the world’s first human heart transplant in Cape Town in 1967, Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital is conveniently located in the centre of Cape Town. The 244-bed hospital offers a full range of medical services, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and enjoys the support of dedicated healthcare practitioners.

Prevention Whether you take oral prophylaxis or not, avoid being outside at night as far as possible as the anopheles mosquito, which carries malaria, operates almost exclusively after dark. Always use mosquito repellent, wear light-coloured long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed shoes at night, and sleep under a mosquito net in endemic areas. Also use an insect repellent and electronic vaporising mats or burning insecticide coils are also helpful. It is advisable to avoid malarial areas if you are pregnant. Other health issues • Tuberculosis is an infectious disease, spread through the air when a person with untreated TB coughs or sneezes. But prolonged exposure to a person with untreated TB usually is necessary for infection to occur. • Bilharzia can be a problem in some of the eastflowing rivers, but it is easily detected and treated if it is caught early. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have a routine test a month or two after you get home – just to reassure yourself. • Ticks generally come out in the early spring and may carry tickbite fever, which is easily treated. Take precautions against being bitten. • You should also be aware of hepatitis, for which you can be inoculated.

SOUTH AFRICAN DESIGN Skinny laMinx
is a design company in Cape Town that’s all about midcentury style, scandi-inspired, japanese-crazed pattern & colour, with a dose of African chic thrown in for good measure. boom, brise soleil screens had become a defining stylistic feature of largescale Modernist edifaces, and they also became incorporated into suburban homes in the California Modern look.
Emma de Crespigny of The New Modernist selected Apeture in concrete, for the energy in the design that suited her sectional 50’s reproduction sofa.
For years, Skinny laMinx designer Heather Moore has been taking photos of perforated brick, concrete and steel brise soleil structures on her travels in Tokyo, in Jaipur, in Los Angeles, and all over South Africa too. OPTIMISM IN ARCHITECTURE Mid-century style has become very much in vogue these days, possibly because we long for more optimistic times, before we noticed that our planet is hotting up. Perhaps it’s time to stop building glass-clad airconditioned edifaces, and rather to use humble brick and concrete blocks that provide shade, security, ventilation, privacy and beautiful pattern too. These thoughts have inspired Moore to create three textile designs in a new fabric collection called BRISE SOLEIL.
Dan Saks of Saks Corner creates furniture based on Scandi designs from the mid-century, and selected the Breeze design in moonbeam for his Clarke Sofa.
THE COLLECTION There are three designs in the collection, each in three colourways:
With these designs, in cool shades of grey, rich tropical blues and fresh pale greens, she hopes to communicate a sense of much-needed mid-century optimism, evoking cool protection, dappled light, and the simple pleasure of a repeating pattern.
Weft – in concrete, petrol and sunray
INSPIRATION FOR THE LATEST COLLECTION IS MODERNISM AND BRISE SOLEIL WALLS
To work with these new prints, two old Skinny laMinx favourites have been released in a new colourway:
In tropical climates, perforated screens have always been used to create privacy and security, to block the sun and to allow air movement through a building. In the early 20th century, as le Corbusier travelled to Brazil, India and West Africa, his architecture began incorporating these aestheticised sun-control devices often made of perforated brick and cast concrete - developing a ‘tropicalization’ of Modernist architecture. By the time of the mid-century housing
Apeture – in concrete, teal and moonbeam Breeze – in concrete, petrol and moonbeam
Woodpile – in teal; Brancusi Stripe – in shell; COLLABORATION For the BRISE SOLEIL Lookbook, Moore approached four furniture manufacturers in Cape Town, with the idea of introducing the new fabrics, showcased on a signature furniture piece. Pauline Mutlow of LIM chose the strong Weft design in concrete, for the clean, Modernist lines of her steel daybed.
Carla Erasmus & Christa Botha of Bofred chose the Breeze design in petrol for their Harold single seater.

I decided to study Naturopathy - little did I know my whole life would change in an instant when I discovered the most amazing performance of healing bodywork. This was my turning point: Hawaiian temple massage. For the next 25 years I pursued this path and began to work internationally, writing 4 books in the process.
I returned home to Cape Town in 2008, the wild passion & beauty of this country sparked my artistic career to new heights. At the young age of 60 I am living my dream. I have my own gallery that showcases my works. It is also a venue for private dance classes in which I collaborate with a master Kizomba dancer, Braulio Faria, and as he dances with his students I paint the action. “To surrender to the music, to the dance, and to feel that passion flow through you is what the dance art experience is about Tel: 0740517433 www.leeorahhursky.com Gallery 301. WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

Tel: 021 418 3823 www.aquarium.co.za CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.

This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins.
