South Africa in Antarctica The SA Agulhas II is South Africa’s latest Antarctic research and supply flagship vessel. For South Africa, this represents a major investment and signals the Department of Environmental Affairs’ commitment and intent in contributing to the understanding of the Earth as a functioning, integrated unit. SA Agulhas II provides logistical support to research bases in Antarctica, Marion and Gough Islands. The studies done in are critical to enhancing the understanding of the entire Earth system. Research including: physics, chemistry, oceanography, engineering, biology and weather are crucial to understanding the southern Oceans, Antarctica and the Earth system. This all begins with contributing to the wellbeing, livelihoods and security of South Africans and our neighbours in the region. The Antarctic continent does not belong to any state or government. South Africa and 48 other member nations belong to the Antarctic Treaty. However, South Africa is one of the 12 countries that are the original signatories signed in 1959. Countries that sign this treaty undertake to ensure that the Antarctic region will only be used for peaceful and scientific purposes and to protect and preserve the environment. As an original signatory, much of the South African researchers’ work in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Islands region is aimed at protecting the fragile environment. The mission of the Department of Environmental Affairs is to increase our understanding of the natural environment and life in the area through appropriate research, science and technology. South Africa’s involvement in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean Islands dates back to the earliest voyages of discovery, due to the then Cape of Good Hope’s position as a stop-over for explorers, whalers and sealers. Antarctica is about 4 000km away from South Africa. It takes 10-15 days to travel there by ship, the time depending on how much ice there is along the way. It can only be reached between November/December and April/May. The SA Agulhas II transports people and cargo to its three bases. The most recent South African base, SANAE-IV, is located 170 km inland, built on a rocky outcrop peeping out of the white snow. The SA Agulhas II is dedicated to the memory of Miriam Makeba - in recognition of her role in the struggle towards democracy and dedicated her life to the upliftment and development of the oppressed especially with regards to education. 6

R120 - R300 The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET brings a timeless classic to the ARTSCAPE Opera House in a production which showcases the art of classical ballet at its best and epitomises the seamless integration of the beauty and grace of ballet with the athleticism required of today’s dancer. This version of Swan Lake is based on that of Vladimir Bourmeister and was first taught to the CAPAB Ballet Company by Frenchman, Attilio Labis, in 1971. Labis had danced as a guest in Russia in several different productions and it was from these that he chose the elements to make it one of the most eclectic in the world. This is the nineteenth time that this production has been mounted for this company, known for the past twenty years as the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET, having been the UCT Ballet Co from 1934 to

1963 and the CAPAB Ballet Co from 1963 to 1997. It showcases the depth of balletic talent in a truly South African company! At three performances, our Senior Principal ballerina, Laura Bosenberg, will be joined by Mariette Opperman, recently returned to the CTCB from Europe. Laura will appear as the White Swan, Odette, with Mariette as the Black Swan, Odile. They will be partnered, as Prince Siegfried, by South Africa’s top male dancer, Thomas Thorne. The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET welcomes back Kirstel Jensen in the role of Odile opposite Claire Spector as Odette, with Daniel Szybkowski as the Prince. The EARTHWALKER A new ballet, EARTHWALKER, created by Kirsten Isenberg and Robin van Wyk, will be seen in the ARTSCAPE Opera House from 9th to 11th June, 2017. The stage is shared for this production by the ZAMA Dance School and the CAPE JUNIOR BALLET, while the fourth ballet is that of Kirvan Fortuin, whose ballet, Silver and Gold (You & I), written on dancers of the CTCB, was been seen in Cape Town in 2016. The Earthwalker, also known as Taurus, is a young star who wonders the Earth, going from tribe to tribe and bewitching the young maidens with his devil may care attitude and charismatic charms. He falls head-over-heels in love with Virgo, daughter of the water king, Scorpio, and his beautiful queen, Pisces. Virgo is also promised to Leo, Prince of the Sagittarians…the fire stars. A fight ensues between Taurus and Leo – a fight to the death! The role of Taurus is shared by Thomas Thorne and Revil Yon, and that of Virgo by Laura Bosenberg and Cleo Ames. Daniel Szybkowski shares the role of Leo with Martin Milner, while Aquarius is danced by Ivan Boonzaaier or Marc Goldberg. The set for EARTHWALKER is created by Charles Petersen and the music is an eclectic mix of composers. I’m sketchy Bongo. I’m a music producer & DJ musician. I create art.

I’m really excited, it’s going to be a great opportunity. I’m going to be performing in front of 60 000 people in JHB, it’s going to be 65 or 70 000 in Cape Town. It’s the biggest crowed I’ve ever performed in front of! I’m mostly working with the Wolf Pack, Kyle Deutsh, Aewon Wolf, Shekhinah, etc. The whole concept just blows my mind!

It was a prop at a music video shoot. I took a liking to it and decided to keep it as my trademark. When I started out at Sketchy Bongo, I didn’t like people knowing who I was, but after time passed, it became infamous! It was a simply performance mechanism. I’d jump on stage and people would go crazy.

That’s difficult question. I think, something most memorable was getting my 1st song played on the radio – mind you that wasn’t very long ago. When I heard, I had an instant mix of shock and excitement, “So many people are listening to my music!” *chuckles* It makes you feel good.

AND THE NAME?

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SONGS?

Sketchy Bongo was actually marketing tool. I was searching for names that weren’t taken while trying to put words together that were creative. Being an artist as well as making music, I wanted to mix the two. So, the musical aspect is ‘Bongo’ and visual art aspect is ‘Sketchy’ – it also went well with the ski-mask, it makes me looks ‘sketchy’ *chuckles*

It comes from everywhere. This hotel we are currently sitting in is inspiring, the people of the country is inspiring, music that came before me and current artists inspire me. My music is very diverse, soulful music, music that is timeless. For example, ‘Back to The beach’, I’m pretty sure 20 years from now people will still be listing to it as one of the greats.

The unmasking was the result of more and more people recognising my face without the mask. In the beginning, I was religious about wearing the mask, but it became way too much effort to maintain. My main playgrounds are the night clubs, where the audience gets really excited and the heat that is created is insane. I’d perform, and as soon as I’m done I’d take it off because it is way too hot! Secondly, my album is called unmasked, so it fits the unveiling.

I’m touring all over SA and Africa. The people are awesome and so diverse. I will also be playing a few shows in Europe, NYC etc. By beside that, I’m working on new projects, finishing off Kyle’s & Shekhinah’s new album. Aewon Wolf & I have also started a new label call: ‘Wolf Pack X’ in which we are developing 2 epic new artists. My aim is to push the label and finish shooting my music videos my album. After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. Born and bred in Cape Town, with Polish ancestry, Agata Karolina has the rare talent of being both a highly creative individual and a remarkably astute, business-minded entrepreneur. Having attained a Masters in Contextual Design at the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, Agata moved between Europe, Asia and Africa working as a curator and project initiator before settling in Cape Town. Her career took her down a ‘garden’ path of memory, heritage, scent and perfumery, something that wasn’t planned but somehow seemed to be her destiny. Here she tells us about her bespoke range of perfumes developed and created here in Cape Town.

What is it about perfumery that attracted you? Perfumery found me far in advance of me finding it. I was brought into the world of distilling, tinctures and natural oils through my mother and grandmother, who taught me everything I know. As a child I was always hypersensitive to spaces, smells and sounds and how they worked together. I enjoyed scent throughout my life as a personal pleasure but for a very long time never considered it a career. As a designer I was always focused on story telling through object and installation and working in scent became a hobby, and with more time evolved into a medium for expression and hence my work as a creative. I’ve become greatly passionate about how perfumery works with the senses, how it encapsulates people in the space of memories, sets the first act for attraction and experience of another and the fact that it is connected to the olfactory centre. What inspired your inaugural range Confessions Volume 1? The concept of the Confessions Collection came from the question “What will the founding collection of my brand represent?” It was about setting the foundation for everything that was to follow. I wanted to create a collection, which I felt expressed something real and honest rather than creating stories that had no context to the wearer. To do this, I decided to tell my own confession as the perfumer behind the brand, choosing six people in my life that over the years had influenced the person I had become, together creating the whole. I believe we are all a multitude of personas at any given time, we are complex layered creatures, calling on the ones we need as the time and situation requires. What excites you about perfumery and more so about it being a very niche industry in Cape Town? We have an incredible amount of raw materials that are indigenous to this area, which very few people have experienced beyond hiking in the mountains and veld. Working with new and precious materials like this is like discovering a new world, it allows me to play on the land and to reflect the space in which I am most inspired, bringing new and unexpected scents to people, allowing them to take home their very own piece of Cape Town in a intimate and personal way. Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,

especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.
