CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET PRESENTS
Giselle The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET (CTCB) presents Giselle for 8 performances, from 6 to 15 July, 2018, at the ARTSCAPE Opera House, accompanied by Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET continues to build on its collaboration, fostered over several decades, with companies in the UK, Europe and the USA, with the appearance of one of Europe’s top ballerinas, Ksenia Ovsyanick, from the BERLIN State Ballet, at two performances. She will be partnered by the CTCB’s own Senior Principal Dancer, Daniel Szybkowski. Giselle is a ballet in two acts with a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Theophile Gautier. The music was composed by Adophe Adam, and the original choreography was created by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. The librettist took his inspiration from a poem by Heinrich Heine, and the ballet tells the story of a peasant girl named Giselle, whose ghost, after her premature death, protects her lover from the vengeance of a group of evil spirits called Wilis, female spirits who, jilted before their wedding day, rise from their graves at night and seek revenge upon men by dancing them to death. The ballet was first presented at the Paris Opéra’s Salle le Peletier on 28 June 1841 with Carlotta Grisi as Giselle, Lucien Petipa as Albrecht, and Jean Coralli as Hilarion. In South Africa, the first performance of the ballet was presented in 1947 by the South African National Ballet, previously Cecily Robinson’s Ballet Club, with Alexis Rassine & Olive James in the leading roles. In 1949, Anton Dolin produced the ballet for the South African National Ballet, who joined forces with the UCT Ballet Co for the occasion. Dolin partnered Alicia Markova, and they danced in Cape Town’s Alhambra Theatre. It was again produced by the UCT Ballet Co in 1955, featuring Alexis Rassine and Nadia Nerina,
Laura Bosenberg
Poole created his version of the ballet in 1972 in the Nico Malan Opera House, when the leading roles were danced by Phyllis Spira and Eduard Greyling, with Elizabeth Triegaardt as Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, and John Simons in the pivotal role of Hilarion. The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET has performed Poole’s version nine times since 1997, produced by Elizabeth Triegaardt, by kind permission of Owen Murray, who himself danced both Albrecht and Hilarion during his long career with the CAPAB Ballet Co. Giselle is an audience favourite and many will remember the other partnerships of Olga Twell with Keith Maidwell, Carol Kinsey with Johan Jooste, Nicolette Loxton with Philip Boyd, Tracy Li with Daniel Rajna, Marianne Bauer with Johnny Bovang and Keith Mackintosh with both Linda Smit and Clare Shepherd-Wilson. Giselle is being danced to full orchestral accompaniment for all but one performance.
Rosamund Ford as Queen of the Wilis
Performances are in the Artscape Opera House from 6 – 15 July, 2018. Ticket prices range between R150 and R500. Book at Computicket: www.computicket.com or ARTSCAPE Dial-A-Seat: 021-421 7695 Visit www.capetowncityballet.org.za or email admin@capetowncityballet.org.za. Hello Cape Town June 2018 l

Fathers’ Day is right upon us and we look to make it extra special but let’s fold the cards on the table and say it as it is: a gift would make him happy, still, the happiest thing you can give him is a day of good memories, relaxed fun for everyone and smiles that go onthroughout the entire day.
That would have been a tricky one to find but with having the Bay Harbour Market just a short drive away - a solution is served. With a choice between live music or the game on the big screen, entertainment is sorted for everyone and with more than 30 food and beverage stalls, refreshments are all in place. Food varieties from around the world and options for everyone from carnivores to vegetarian and vegans will keep every member of the group content. The fact is that with so many different traders, each focusing on one kind of food or kitchen, you are guaranteed to get high quality from each of them. Wine, beer on the tap, craft beers, health smoothies, fresh coffees are all available too.
And it’s a market. An abundance of locally manufactured, high quality products from small, home grown designers. Hand crafted, artisanal, goods and traditional handicraft being served in modern objects for daily use. It’s not only about the shopping, it’s about supporting local craftsmanship and communities. It’s about sharing your family with other families. Happy Fathers’ Day. Hello Cape Town June 2018 l

ST GEORGE’S CATHEDRAL
SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM
The City Sightseeing Free Walking Tours start here, look out for the tour guide in their red uniforms with their red umbrellas. TOP SPOTS TO VISIT ON THE HISTORIC CITY WALK ST GEORGE’S CATHEDRAL The oldest and one of the grandest cathedrals in Southern Africa and the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town. Affectionately known as “the People’s Cathedral” for its role in the struggle against apartheid, the church kept its doors open to people of all races throughout the apartheid era. Here, after Archbishop Desmond Tutu led a mass demonstration of 30 000 people in 1989, he coined the term the “rainbow nation” to describe South Africa’s diverse population. Learn more about the cathedral’s interesting history – for example, the foundation stone was laid in 1901 by the future King George V and can be seen from the bottom of Government Avenue leading into the Company’s Garden. SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM Step back into history and see more than 1.5-million items of cultural and scientific importance at the South African Museum. The museum houses a wide range – from specimens and fossils dating back over 700-million years to contemporary T-shirts. Also visit the Planetarium adjoining the museum to learn more about the planets and stars with a virtual exhibition. SOUTH AFRICAN JEWISH MUSEUM The South African Jewish Museum is a moving tribute to and detailed account of one of the great Jewish communities of the diaspora. The building offers visitors a poignant and moving experience with bold architectural design, interactive multimedia displays and engaging accounts of South African Jewish history. The late former President Nelson Mandela officially opened the museum in December 2000, and you can watch the award-winning documentary Nelson Mandela: A Righteous Man screened daily. The venue also has exhibitions, including works by celebrated South African artists such as Irma Stern and William Kentridge, and by Marc Chagall. DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM In 1966, the South African government of the time swooped on District Six as part of its efforts to enforce apartheid, forcibly removing its occupants and declaring the area a “whites-only” zone. Decades later, the District Six Museum is a reminder of these tragic events, but also a symbol of return and restitution to former residents and the people affected. See an impressive collection of historical photographs, paintings, artefacts, physical remains such as street signs, books and studies, as well as audio-visual recordings from District Six, most of which were donated by former residents. Either explore the museum by yourself, or choose to be guided by a former resident. We recommend the latter to enrich your experience at this heritage site. CASTLE OF GOOD HOPE The oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope is located in the heart of Cape Town, opposite the Grand Parade and near the magnificent City Hall. The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679 by Dutch administrator Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company, mainly as a defensive fort. In its long history, it has served as military stronghold, prison and now museum, heritage site and public gathering space. Wander the grounds on your own or join a guided tour to learn more about how the castle was built, its history and its former occupants.

Different accommodation options are laid around the magnificent gardens which is also home to horses, ducks, swans and a big series of large size sculptures of farm and wild animals. The old homestead, preserved to its’ original glory, houses the first set of rooms. The old farm cottages joins, and is completed with newer buildings that can each house a family or a company of friends and couples, all with en-suite rooms, communal lounges and a kitchen to share. This plays in favour to the fact that the estate is a preferred wedding venue, and also houses a conference facility in the old fruit shed- a charming building with thick walls and original details. The farms’ restaurant, Seasons, is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday and leisurely breakfast and lunch on Sundays. It is positioned to overlook the estate from every seat, inside or out and oversee selected parts of the large grounds. With traditions in mind, the chef enjoys creating dishes according to the weather, showcasing his flair and originality with local products. The estate offers Fynbos Horse Trails with full or half day options and Vineyard Beauty, the house spa, has a full treatment menu. ALL THE GOOD CARDS Located in the vibey, new business district of Century City (CC), the CC Hotel took an unusual step in the South African hotel scene. They opened their ground floor to the nearby square and integrated a few uncommon features to the Cape Town hotel scene. It results in rebranding the major part of the ground floor as ‘The Square Café & Wine Bar’. Drawn from the hotels joint CEO’s, Gary Koetser and Glyn Taylor’s, business tradition, they’ve taken their generous hospitality know how to a new level of flowing offerings. The sophisticated, relaxed dining experience for breakfast, opens up to the surrounding business professionals. What is usually an unclosed dining room in the rest of the day for other hotels transforms into a buzzing space every lunch time with setting the daily Harvest Table. The Harvest Table offers handmade seasonal dishes, salads and fresh cut fruit & veg that can be eaten at the café or be taken away. The offering is complimented with freshly made 20

sandwiches and wraps for those on the run. Throughout the day the café offers a gastropub menu that compliments the other features in the space- the large Gin Bar and the exposed glass Wine Cellar. While ticking all the necessary boxes on the beverage menu, the bar also stocks a well picked selection of locally crafted beers from around the Cape and an impressive selection of newly crafted Gins that speaks for this thriving niche industry in Cape Town. Innovation continues in the wine cellar and with the wine list. A specially imported preserving system, called ‘Le Verre de Vin’ was brought from France. ‘Le Verre de Vin’ is the only wine preservation system capable of effectively preserving an unlimited number of still, sparkling and fortified wines, for up to 3 weeks. That allows the Wine Sommelier to offer 60% of the selection to be tasted or drunk by the glass, from Champagne all the way to the finest red wines. With a locally developed new technology, guests no longer need to read from a wine list but
can make their selection from a new application on a tablet at the restaurant & wine bar. The app allows guests to peruse the wine list by either varietal, region or price and offers guests the opportunity to learn more about each region, from terroir to local attractions. Once the order is placed, the restaurant ensures the wine is ready to enjoy as guests arrive at their table. Alternatively, the in-house sommelier is on hand to enhance the dining experience and guests are welcomed into the private cellar to view the vast selection of wines for themselves and to taste some on offer before making their choice. The exposed glass cellar contains novel choices of cultivars sourced from a wide range of regions with a large selection of unusual blends such as Bukettraube, Carignan, Gewurstraminer, Grenache, Gruner Veltliner, Mourvedre, Nebbiolo and Rousanne and Halal certified wine, to name a few. There is a fine balance between established and new labels and the price range is what makes this wine list so appealing. Ranging from R125 to R700 (per bottle), the wines are clearly marked and easy to navigate. The sommelier will gladly walk you through some exciting wine & food pairings of different vertical tastings that allows guests to learn and compare the differences between wine routes, terroirs and wine verities. The Square Cafe & Wine Bar at the CC Hotel is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Private food & wine pairings must be booked in advance.

EXTREME WINE PAIRING Run by two masters in their fields and backed up by a line of tough professionals in the hospitality business, the 1on19 evening at The Westin Cape Town is a once off performance of culinary delight, occurring one evening a month but with a different theme, season appropriate.
On the cultivar side, moreover than pairing with Shiraz (also referred to as Syrah), we were taken into an in-depth exploration over the different notes this grape has to offer and the significant influence of the terroir in which it grows as per the diverse wine regions of the Western Cape.
2014 winner of ‘Ultimate Braai Master’ (not an easy title to achieve), Chef Stephen Mandes took over the kitchen of On19. Together with the theatrical Niall Bruyns, the hotel’s food and beverage manager, they orchestrate a celebratory evening of local ingredients and flavours.
In addition to the 1 ingredient- 1 cultivar evenings, the On19 daily menu received a total revamp and serves A La Carte menus for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant itself is located on the top floor (19!) of The Westin hotel. It dominates the main entrance to Cape Town and boasts a 270° panorama of the harbour, the V&A Waterfront and the CBD, all laying beneath Lion’s Head and Table Mountain.
Our April experience of Fynbos & Shiraz included 5 courses and 6 wines. The tasty dishes where a sophisticated interpretation with a remote resemblance to South African classics in the cases of the palate cleanser, the main course and the dessert, while the starter was an innovative dish of sour fig salami, a surprising pleasure.

IF PIG’S COULD FLY… at Bay Harbour Market
If pigs could fly and frog princes needed digs for the weekend, you would find them all at Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay. Shoppers at this popular destination are going bonkers for the new hive of activity at the Restorey stall – all because their novel range of animals have arrived. Designed to make you smile, but also to add love and colour to your home, the Pomme-pidou range is made-up of a collection of quirky animal characters that are all individualised with their own names and unique patterns. “There is no one creator of the range,” says Restorey representative, Ce’Nedra Anderson. “It’s a collaboration of many – the whole team chooses the characters and the designs, and then we have so much fun naming each character as well.” The top-sellers are the deer (Nelson) and rhino (Lola) heads, which are made from resin and are hand dipped. They come in various sizes and are perfect for any wall in the home that needs a splash of life.

A great vision, professional executing and management and a superb standard of service drives the team behind the Wine Tram to keep offering alluring ways and combinations to create the best day out. With currently offering 6 different routes that holds treasures for both foodies and wine lovers, we will lay out for you 2 routes at a time. All routes are based on a hop-on hop-off system that follows a time table and are complimented with specially designed, old charming open buses to get you from the tracks to the cellar door. The Purple Line departs on the tram first and showcases the western region of the picturesque Franschhoek Valley stopping at the following wine estates: Solms-Delta, Allee Bleue, Plaisir de Merle, Vrede en Lust, Noble Hill, Babylonstoren, Backsberg and Glen Carlou. Solms-Delta has the Fyndraai Food & Wine Pairing on their menu. 6 courses of locally sourced and traditionally inspired menu with 6 wines to match. It requires a minimum of 6 people and pre-booking is advised. Allee Bleue, one of the best-known herb growers in the region in addition of being a wine estate, offers an array of experiences. The wine tasting will give you a quick impression while the bistro offers a more relaxed dining setting. If you are a noise party or just being a master of your time, the picnic option is a basket of surprises that will compliment a leisurely time on the big lawns. ALLEE BLEUE

Vrede en Lust’s majestic tasting room offers a selection of wine tasting with sweet or savory pairing options and platters for those who wish to indulge longer. The Lust Bistro & Bakery is a relaxed and sophisticated dining option with many local fans. KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. FREE GARDEN WALKS AT KIRSTENBOSCH The Botanical Society’s volunteer Garden guides, who are brimming with amazing knowledge and insights into the Garden, lead FREE guided walks around the Garden. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00, Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00. Visit capepoint.co.za for more.
BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30. Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.
AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great
White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!
CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance
• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined
big 5 safaris

Aquila newly opened African spa featuring; 2 large heated indoor pools, steam room, sauna, nail bar, 10 treatment rooms, a couples or group treatment room and an outdoor pool.
INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
SAFARI

Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
