This bespoke art experience provides a rare opportunity to visit acclaimed artists in their studios to view and purchase their art straight off the easel. Art on offer ranges from highly collectable pricier originals to smaller, more affordable art works, prints, and offshoot items. ARTS TOWN EXPLAINED A colony of acclaimed artists have made the Riebeek Valley their home – no surprise with its breathtaking views and inspirational setting. This has given birth to Arts Tourism, a new form of “industry” in this predominantly agricultural area, which has subsequently breathed new life into the economy of this rural community. SOLO STUDIOS – Intimate Art Encounters is the showpiece art event hosted by the Riebeek Valley, which has been

named “ARTS TOWN” due to the proliferation of artists, art, and related art activities found in the Valley. “Besides Solo Studios, there are many other exhibitions, attractions and activities throughout the year, ranging from artist retreats and workshops, performances, street parties, festivals and the like”, says Astrid McLeod, owner and curator of The Gallery and RK Contemporary, the two permanent galleries in town. “We are truly blessed with the high density of creatives that call the valley home, which has validated us declaring ourselves “ARTS TOWN”!” Among the renowned contemporary artists who have made the Riebeek Valley their home, and who will be taking part in Solo Studios 2019, are Andre van Vuuren, Emma Willemse, Jenny Parsons, Tamlin Blake and Riaan van Zyl, to name but a handful. In addition, the valley is home to a myriad of crafters and artisans – jewellers, ceramicists, potters, leather crafters, sculptors, musicians, writers, poets, wine makers, craft brewers, dance troupes and community project participants. MORE ABOUT SOLO STUDIOS – Intimate Art Encounter The core of Solo Studios is the once a year opportunity to visit the artists in their personal workspaces. Here the buyer can engage with the artists
themselves, experience how their work is conceptualised and created, and buy art directly from the artist, “fresh off the easel” so to speak. For the 2019 event, 18 resident artists have been selected as participants. Besides the artists’ studios, one can expect a range of other activities and attractions, including 6 galleries or pop-up group exhibitions, engaging art related talks, guided walkabouts by renowned art aficionados, impromptu musical events and productions. Pre-booking is essential as access and accommodation is limited. Because the event takes place largely within the homes and studios of the artists, access needs to be limited and controlled, and visitors are therefore strongly advised to pre-book to avoid disappointment. And since it is hosted on a long weekend, accommodation is likely to be filled rather early. Visitors are encouraged to book their accommodation well in advance on www.roomsinriebeek.co.za. Tickets are sold through Webtickets, the link being through the website www.solostudios.co.za, and come in a variety of options. This ranges from the Premier Weekend Pass at R395.00 for the weekend, to day passes at R195.00 per day.

Located in the oldest wine producing vineyards in South Africa, Jonkershuis is a shining example to a restaurant that constantly holds its reputation in one of the most visited wine estates in the Cape. Frequently visited by locals and repeatedly fully booked on special calendric days, stands for the quality and value this eatery serves. Surrounded by ancient oak trees and overlooking the Cape Flats and False Bay, the restaurant is actually a complex of spaces and seating possibilities that allows it to operate all year round, 7 days a week. Including private dining grandeur, to intimate interior fire side dining; typical Italian village gatherings in the covered courtyard to family style lunches on their front lawns, where children can safely play amongst the old oak trees and two seaters along the white facade to sit back and watch the play of humans and nature in front of you. The daily breakfast menu is rich and versatile. You’ll find light or full options and a special healthy attention to children of all ages. The later menu pays homage to the rich cultural history of the estate through authentic Cape Malay inspired bistro style food. The tradition of showcasing the best produce the Cape has to offer continues through simple and accessible food, pointing to the fact that Cape Malay dishes are renowned for their fruity, mild & full-bodied flavours. It’s all about local spices & flavours, not about chilli. Should you only be in the mood to nibble while enjoying a bottle of wine, Jonkershuis offers patrons a Bakery Bread board, a Charcuterie or a Fromage board, all supporting organic, free-range & sustainable practices. The venue is able to accommodate up to 250 guest for a function and offers packages for different budgets. They will be dilated to host your special occasion and embed you to the historical fabric that creates the Groot Constantia legacy. The 333 years old Groot Constantia Wine Estate is accessible via the City Sightseeing Mini Peninsula Tour if you don’t have your own set of wheels.

Leopard’s Leap
For years, local Capetonians called winter ‘The Secret Season’ for the perfect time it is to unveil the wonders of the Cape Winelands in a more relaxed manner, with even friendlier attention than during the season and opportunities for patrons to engage with owners and winemakers once the latest harvest is well tucked in the cellars for nature to take its course.
Dieu Donné Vineyards
Most of us, coming from urbanized surroundings, expect and prefer to see vineyards in their utmost glory- greenish with fruit ripening on the vines while the sun fondly storks our air-conditioned skin. On the other hand, people of the winelands appreciate winter for being the time of hibernation for the vines, maturation of the wines and rejuvenation of the soil. It is the time when magic happens. Out of men’s hands, invisible to the non-agriculture eye- all by the grace of nature. From special accommodation rates to hearty seasonal menus, specific events and small gatherings with wine professionals and stunning events deals, even more relaxed atmosphere in what are the busiest restaurants over the season and time of hospitality professionals to put their guards down and share in-depth knowledge about their venue without the stress of getting to the next visitor.
La Motte Wine Estate
We’ve handpicked a few examples to dazzle you with the opportunities: Dieu Donné Vineyards just of the center of Franschhoek is well positioned up the valley slopes providing a panoramic view from Roca restaurant and a few charming self-catering cottages that allows you to experience village life for a few days. Winter is the perfect season to enjoy Leopard’s Leaps’ South African Table. An indulgence like no other across our winelands. Sharing the diversity that is South African food, the Leopard’s Leap South African Table presents guests with the opportunity to taste authentic South African dishes and to learn more about the food heritage while sharing a meal.

A well-informed Wine Tasting Ambassador will join the meal to introduce guests to Leopard’s Leap wines and their unique South African attributes. Please take notice that the estate is closed to guests between 17 June to 11 July for the yearly break and that pre-booking for the South African Table is a must. La Motte is all geared up for winter with a decadent Winter Warmer lunchtime soups menu at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant, looking out over the picture perfect sculpture garden.

A day visit or an overnight stay at the modern luxury accommodation should be complemented by a bicycle ride through the vines- a stunning activity for a soft, sunny winter day.
Mooiplaas Wine Estate
At Lust Bistro & Bakery on the estate, headed by Chef Jean Pierre Smith, you will meet locals all through the year- a testimony to the ongoing quality. The restaurant is the sole caterer for the events at the estate and participates in the Mid ‘year-end’ Special for events booked in the estate or just at treat bush at the bistro itself. Dieu Donné Vineyards, Leopard’s Leap, La Motte and Vrede en Lust are also some of the stops along the different routes of the Franschhoek Wine Tram which all together makes it a pure romantic combination: an historic, re-purposed rail, dreamy two story cars and some of the best estates in the Cape Winelands.
Diemersfontain Wine Estate
Mooiplaas Wine Estate in private nature reserve – now, that the season is quiet you are welcome to spoil yourself and book a guided tour to their private nature reserve, part of the Bottelary Conservancy with Tielman Roos. One of the Mooiplaas owners, a third generation at the estate and a walking encyclopedia with both educational and perosnal experience knowledge about vines, soils, nature and the history of Stellenbosch. Either in the beautifully preserved vineyard cottages or in the modern accommodation villas, Diemersfontain Wine & Country Estate runs a not-tobe-missed winter special that includes a free wine tasting. Aan Tafel Kontrei Restaurant on the estate is an authentic winelands cuisine experience with a special edition of leisurely breakfast and lunch on Sundays. The tasting and the exquisite, multiple, award winning restaurant at De Grendel Wine Estate enjoys un-interrupted views of Table Mountain and the city that surrounds it.
De Grendel Wine Estate
This estate is simply a must visit to every wine and food lover and always, always book in advance. It is full, all year round so we don’t need to add any more text than that. For a few years now, Delheim Wine Estate brings back the live jazz and delicious fondue Sunday lunch as soon as winter kicks in. it is so popular that it became a seasonal tradition among many locals. Each week hosts a different ensemble making each visit one of a kind. Make sure to get your tickets online.

the gifts of winter June marks the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere and while the drop of temperatures removes the delicate flowers from our scenery, it changes into other vibrant colours, crisp air, with better visibility and an overall sense of rejuvenation. Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, undoubtedly the most beautiful garden in South Africa, delivers a breath taking experience of the season’s glory. Un-interrupted location and continues support and care makes this garden flourish in every sense. Although we are definitely praying for a rainy winter, bear in mind the average shows 13 days of rain in June and slightly below that in July, leaving you with plenty of opportunities to visit the garden. Fynbos is at its best during winter. Many species are in bloom and the Fynbos Walk is alive with beds of colour and birds. You will see many Proteas, South Africa’s national flower, or Sugarbushes (Protea species), Pincushions (Leucospermum species), Conebushes (Leucadendron species) and some of the rarer Protea family shrubs, like the Spiderheads (Serruria species). You will also see Buchus flowering, (pronounced boo-gh-oo) and fynbos shrubs with strongly aromatic foliage that belong in the Citrus family. You can’t miss the famous Crane flower, also known as the ‘Bird of Paradise’, (Strelitzia Reginae) which flowers throughout the winter, starting in May and ending around October. That includes Kirstenbosch’s special yellow cultivar, ‘Mandela’s Gold’ named after former president, the late Nelson Mandela. A wide variety of aloes are in flower in the Mathews Rockery, as well as in the Conservatory, the Vygie Rockery, the Useful Plants Garden, and the Garden of Extinction. Take the not-to-be-missed walk up the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, a curved steel and timber bridge that winds and dips its way through and over the trees of the Arboretum. Inspired by a snake skeleton, and informally called ‘The Boomslang‘ (meaning tree snake), it is a low-maintenance, low-impact sculptural raised walkway. The Walkway takes the visitor from the forest floor into and through the trees and bursts out above the canopy, giving spectacular panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, Garden, Cape Flats and the whole of False Bay. This walkway is 130 metre long, narrow and slender, with a few wider viewpoint areas, and lightly snakes its way through the canopy, in a discreet, almost invisible way. The walkway is crescent-shaped and takes advantage of the sloping ground; it touches the forest floor in two places, and raises visitors to 12 metres above ground. Free, 90 minutes long, guided tours of the Garden leave from the Visitors’ Centre (Gate 1) at 10:00, 11:00 and 14:00, Monday to Friday and at 10:00 on Saturdays. Free guided tours also leave from the Garden Centre (Gate 2) at 10:45 Monday to Saturday. Tours are free but Garden entry fee applies. Each guide presents a unique tour taking in the highlights of the season, exploring most of the Garden while including the oldest and most famous features like the Dell.

In the run-up to the International Day of Monuments and Sites on 18 April 2019, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) joined creative forces with the independent journal LitNet to exhibit lesser-known poets’ work at the monument’s Green Gallery. This temporary exhibition places the spotlight on eleven poets whose work appeared in LitNet’s ‘new poems’ in 2018/2019. According to Michael Jonas, ATM director, the institution is a living monument where there is a continuous interaction between the structure, nature, visitors and language creators. “We like to give lesser-known writers, musicians and poets a chance to expose their work to a larger audience. Most visitors are not only very interested in the history of Afrikaans, but also curious about the language’s development and her latest creative incarnations as it offers new perspectives on the worlds of many Afrikaansspeaking Africans.” The theme of this year’s International Day of Monuments and Sites was ‘Rural Landscapes’, focused on the importance of rural areas and the impact their welfare has on the rest of a country. “Whilst the urban population rate is growing and has reached a global figure of 54.82% in 2017, the population of rural areas also continues to grow, despite its decline in terms of percentage share,” says the International Council on Monuments and Sites.

l Hello Cape Town June 2018 2019
“This has a twofold effect in rural areas and, while some areas are being abandoned, others are suffering from human pressure. Furthermore, we cannot ignore the ecological footprint that urban areas have on rural zones, and the changes in the rural landscapes that this footprint induces, as well as the consequences for both the environment and communities.”
The architect of the monument, Jan van Wijk, felt strongly about nature and therefore he is honoured by this open-air gallery where his ashes are embedded in a boulder, surrounded by indigenous olive trees and granite. Every few months an exhibit of various Afrikaans writers’ works is presented in the gallery’s display cases, made from recycled wood and glass, to focus on the cultural and ecological aspects of the monument. LitNet is a widelyacclaimed multi-lingual interactive journal on -line where writers can publish their stories, thoughts, columns, articles and opinions. The public can view the exhibition to the end of August 2019 in the Green Gallery. The monument, which is also the starting point of Paarl’s Tree Trail, is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Access is R40 for adults, R10 for SA students/pensioners and R5 for children (free for children under 6). Audio guides in various languages as well as free guided tours are available, and the monument also offers a playground for children, hiking trails and a restaurant. For inquiries about the monument or to find out more about the many popular events, visit www.taalmonument.co.za.
SAFARI
“The chosen poets live in cities, towns and farms - from the Cape Flats to the Waterberge to Henties Bay, so they represent a wide spectrum of residents, urban and rural, and their poetry is not just about nature but also human nature,” says Jonas. The 11 poets are Alwyn Roux, Anzé Bezuidenhout, Christo Meyer, Daniel Manchest, Elize Koch, Estelle Rubow, Franco Colin, Gideon C du Toit, Margaret Cordier, Marnus Kok and Shaun Warner who embody a wide range of interests, histories and writing styles.

sharing africa with the world
Earlier this year we’ve met with Hannah O’Leary, a Sotheby’s director and head of Modern and Contemporary African Art. She is based in London, yet frequently visits the African continent with South Africa enjoying a constant growing portion of her time and expertise. We’ve chatted about art treasures, supporting reputable talents and enabling the local and global art collectors a greater international exposure through Sotheby’s varied platforms and worldwide presence. Pioneering the secondary art sales for modern African art, Sotheby’s went from nonexisting to 20,000,000 USD (twenty million) turnover in one decade, creating this new category in the art world while confirming the confidence of sellers and buyers trusted in their ability to discover and identify value in lesser known markets at that time. The core service Sotheby’s offers in the secondary market are appraisals for private collectors - would it be insurance valuation and selling of current holdings on one hand and expert acquisitions and investment advisory on the other. With utmost confidentiality and knowledge, their travels translate into personal attention and careful treatment to meet a seller or collectors interest. Hannah and her team would gladly help investors looking to discover the African market. With their experience and proven record, a collector can be rest assured that acquisitions will enjoy both monitory and artistic value. International collectors, interested in discovering and learning more about African art are encouraged to visit exhibitions and browse, to get familiar with the visual languages and artistic movements originating from the continent and find their likes and loves, in order to create a base to grow their collection in a satisfactory manner. Sotheby’s is the only auction house to hold regular African and Oceanic auctions throughout the year in two of their principal selling locations; New York in May and November and Paris in June and December. Recent highlights include Tresors: Collection Frum, the first auction dedicated to Oceanic art which broke records with three works selling for more than 1,500,000 USD and the Senufo Female Figure by the Master of Sikasso from the Myron Kunin
