schmooze without the booze No matter the reason for you avoiding alcohol, be it permanently or temporarily, what sometimes got you the odd look from the barman is now gone. What was once a special request is now embedded on the menus at various bars around the city. Orphanage Cocktail Emporium, in upper Bree Street, whose mixologists and bartenders achieved their fame and glory, includes the ‘For the Sober Minded’ section in their menu, with specially designed mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) and locally crafted, non-alcoholic beer.

Orphanage Cocktail Emporium

The Gin Bar on Wale Street tutors patrons about myriads of botanical flavours, and experiment with different mixers and garnishes. You will need to state your non-alcoholic preference and they are well accustomed to these requests. Strolla Restaurant & Bar in Sea Point, adjacent to the Peninsula Hotel, suggested mocktails options on the menu from day one. You’ll come across names like No-Jito, Cosmo Crush and Innocent Daiquiri added to a range of designer lemonades. The wine cellar and cocktail bar at the Century City Hotel holds permanent stock of non-alcoholic wines for their patrons.

The Gin Bar

The in-house sommelier, a graduate of the Cape Wine Academy, is there to guide and explain. In addition to this, one can get great off the shelf options. The Duchess Virgin Gin & Tonic is a range of non-alcoholic beverages, crafted using re-distilled juniper berries. The Duchess has the distinct gin and tonic taste, complimented by aromatic layers of locally produced botanicals.

Strolla Restaurant & Bar

It comprises three different tastes: botanical, floral and greenery. The Duchess is available in single serving sized bottles, or a larger champagne-like bottle. Holder Vineyards from Stellenbosch are the producers of Lautus De-Alcoholised Wines. Alcohol removal is done via spinning cone* technology at a low temperature under vacuum. Removal is done in two passes and results in a small, savvy range of white, red and soon to come Rosè. The range is available off the shelf at Woolworths with the full endorsement of the brand’s sommelier.

COMING UP 16 MARCH The Cape Town Carnival, held annually in March, is a year-long programme culminating in a street parade that showcases and celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa. For several hours on a late-summer evening, more than 50 energetic and talented community performance groups, spectacular floats, giant puppets and extravagant costumes bring the Green Point Fan Walk alive, while thousands of spectators from all over the world converge along the 1.2km parade route. Over 2 000 dazzling costumed performers and musicians will take to Cape Town’s Fan Walk, entertaining viewers with floats and vibrant dance routines. The parade will be followed by a family party, showcasing some of SA’s hottest musical talent. The Carnival brings people together from all over the metropole, creates a platform for participation and artistic expression, reclaims public space for the parade event, and encourages recognition of the many communities, motivated groups and talented individuals who strut their stuff in the annual spectacular. The Cape Town Carnival 2019 ‘VUKA UKHANYE Rise ’n Shine’ parade depicts a vivid journey of awakening, from sunrise and waking up in the morning to symbolically waking up to your own power, to our interconnectedness and the light within each of us when we open hearts, eyes and minds. DRESS UP & PARTICIPATE: Dress comfortably in your “dancing shoes” as the Fan Walk is 2 km long and there will be many things to explore. From 3 PM the Fan Walk turns into a pedestrian walkway filled with fun, food and folk enjoying the freedom of their city streets. 7 PM the PARADE BEGINS! Along the route there are going to be a few paid options to add and complete this awesome day: - A food court will be placed at the traffic department parking area on the corner of Ebenezer. - The party at the Carnival Village on the corner of York will start at 14:00 with live acts. - Bleacher-style terraced platforms will be placed along the north pavement. Seated tickets must be pre-purchased online. - City Sightseeing buses will be placed along the south pavement for the same purposes. Visit capetowncarnival.com for ticketing.

Ends:

October 31, 2019

This exhibition at the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) is a showcase of new acquisitions made by the museum. The show, celebrating the gallery’s enduring commitment to championing the work of emerging and underrepresented artists, includes paintings, photography, video, drawings, prints and sculptures. We found it to be a balanced mixture of both beautiful fine art, full of details, artistic effort and interesting interpretations to African traditions and visuals, side-by-side to some thought provoking pieces that provides a brief pause to reflect about our habits and the perceptions of the current South African society that surrounds us. Filling In The Gaps features important historical acquisitions – addressing both neglected histories and contemporary works by notable cutting-edge artists concerned with current issues, such as: Lerato Shadi; Sethembile Msezane; Mongezi Ncaphayi and Steven Cohen. Recently acquired for the collection after considerable effort, are works by Ephraim Ngatane and Peter Clarke, which all assist in building a national collection that is inclusive and more representative of the overlooked and marginalised artists of the past. The underfunding of acquisitions at ISANG has long been a bone of contention. There is a sense of achievement engendered not only by a more generous acquisitions budget over the past two years, but also by the generosity of the Friends of the SANG and important private donors. This exhibition, highlighting the gallery’s new acquisitions, will provide an opportunity to assess the institution’s transformation around collecting policies. As the gallery edges towards its 150th anniversary in 2022, it seeks and acquires new works to expand not just its holdings, but our understanding and appreciation of the culture of the South African experience, along with global perspectives of life from around the world. Curated by Iziko curator, Andrea Lewis, Filling In The Gaps will be on show at the Iziko South African National Gallery from 16 February 2019. Hello Cape Town March 2019 l

made to be friendly

It is rare nowadays to walk into a contemporary designed space and not to feel humbled by its size and the sheer volume surrounding your presence. Yet, with a clever play with the heights of the ceilings and a choice of a warm tone woods repeated throughout the Leopards Leap visitors’ center, you get into what is actually a series of separate functioning spaces. This will let you comfortably change your mind or share experiences with a party in which each have different interests. Moreover, the different simultaneous happenings in the space will give you the feeling that all are welcome to share not only the great wines the estates produce, but also to engage

26

l Hello Cape Town March 2019

with your neighbour for the hour and exchange ideas over a glass or a cup. No one is excluded. On the one side of the entrance section is a comfortable seating lounge that welcomes you while waiting for the rest of your party to catch up. The other side is the location of the estate’s shop – a bit of an understatement in its title. While the shop stocks the estate wines and additional wine accessories, it also has a large range of crafted, fine homeware and souvenirs selected from across the winelands, as well as a range of indulgent body products produced under the name of the sister estate, La Motte.

The pride and joy of the shop is the Culinaria Collection book corner. Quite large, and more substantial then the common book corner you’ll find at other estates, it aligns with Leopards Leap’s ethos of spreading knowledge and education. Books are mostly related to food and wine, growing, making and enjoying. You are welcome to sit and browse or learn a little bit more from what you were just introduced to in the tasting area or in the open kitchen. The intermediate part of the space holds the 270° curved tasting bar that allows views of the interior or the outer winelands landscape, depending on your seat and the restaurant seating

right before the buffet and carvery. This is the popular rotisserie-style restaurant that is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 11:30 until 15:00. Different kinds and cuts of meat roll slowly from the early hours of the morning, while the kitchen is busy preparing an extensive selection of salads and side dishes using seasonal ingredients, the lot of them grown in the fruit orchards and veg garden right across, past the outside lawns. They are all placed on a two wings buffet, the Harvest Table, from which you serve yourself and billed by weight. A dessert buffet is located across the room with offerings that will entice you to get some. The length of the inner seating area is attached with a large balcony that includes traditional tables and chairs on the inner side and sofas on the outer. This welcomes an even more relaxed experience and interacts directly with the large, open meadow allowing young children to de-energise while the adults enjoy their meal. The overall design of the experience is a perfect setting for the Sunday Lunch shared table. Families, groups of friends or a mix of both are welcome to book for the Family Table in which you’ll be offered generous platters from the Harvest Table, succulent selection of meats from the rotisserie as well as an array of tempting desserts.

The South African Table is a starter platter followed by a three course meal in which the chefs give new interpretations and twists to the food they grew up with at home. A live TV screen broadcasts the entire process while the chefs share their modernised childhood memories on a plate and the wine ambassador matches and describes the perfect wine from the available selection. The Wine & Dine Pairing is the perfect end to a week in the winelands or as a start to the weekend. It starts at 12:00 on Fridays and is a series of small plates matched with wines from the Culinaria Collection and is joined and explained by both the chef and the wine ambassador. The wine need-to-know facts include the knowledge the Family Range is made for easy drinking with about 20 different wines each year and that the Culinaria Collection of complex wines is available mainly at the estate and are made to join complex flavours of food, so if you fall in love with one, you best get it while you are visiting. The curated experiences requires at least a 48 hours notice and pre-booking. For contact details and more information see page 33.

Right at the entrance to the open kitchen at the back of the building, there is a dedicated seating space for two of the most enticing experiences the estate offers: The South African Table and the Wine & Food Pairing.

DIEU DONNÉ VINEYARDS

“Dieu Donné” translates literally into “A gift from God”. The farm is situated high on the cool south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which tempers the sun, ensuring that our grapes ripen slowly. Thanks to our cool summer conditions & unique soils, this lends to the unique flavours and characters of the terroir in the grapes. Merlot being the flagship wine on the farm, we invite you to visit our tasting facility or enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace while soaking in the beautiful views.

MOOIPLAAS WINE ESTATE & PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve is situated among the majestic mountains and fertile valleys in the Stellenbosch Winelands, approximately 40km east of Cape Town. Mooiplaas is a historic and traditional working wine farm. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of ancient mineral-rich soils in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, overlooking Cape Town. There is a difference of approximately 235 m between the highest and the lowest areas on the estate. From the highest point of the estate (370 m above sea level) one has a panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right. Here Tielman and Louis Roos produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition and artisan techniques that make the most of the unique terroir. In 1995 Mooiplaas registered about 70ha of the farm as a nature reserve, conserving critically endangered fynbos species.

winelands aesthetics Dr JJ Huskisson Your age does not define you; you define your age. At Winelands Medical and Aesthetic Dr Joseph J. Huskisson (Aesthetic and General Practitioner, MB ChB Stell 1990) can make you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside. Dr Huskisson’s luxuriously upmarket practice in Stellenbosch Square has been making dreams come true since 2006. His professional, discreet team offer a relaxing atmosphere where individual attention is ensured and enjoyed by all. Dr Huskisson has established a strong client base through his thorough and personal approach to every patient. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr Huskisson went on to practice medicine in Somerset West and the Strand. It was after his relocation to the United Kingdom, where he became a member of the Joint Committee of General Practitioners; that he made his post-graduate transition from pure medicine to aesthetics. He has set a high standard in aesthetics and thus provides training to medical practitioners in Botox and Dermal Fillers. Dr Huskisson has been acknowledged as a front- runner in his field by being one of 13 specialist doctors from South Africa who gets invited to Monaco each year for an all expenses paid trip to the World Aesthetics and Medicines Congress.

Thread Lifts; Lifting / Contouring / Volumizing / Stimulates collagen production

In his spare time, Dr Huskisson enjoys painting and other forms of art. It is this creative edge that enables him to achieve such amazing results. These results can be seen when he provides a Liquid Facelift for a client; where more enduring fillers are used to lift and improve sagging of the face, contour profiles, create shadows and highlights, and delicately adjust the shape of the face. Dr Huskisson’s art can also be seen on the body when he sculpts the body using a revolutionary LipoLaser treatment that offers Laser-assisted Liposuction. This unique, non- aggressive procedure has been offered at Winelands since 2010. His services also include skincare treatments such as Medical micro-needling at a very special price, skin peels and IPL. Due to the fact that these treatments are minimally invasive it requires very little downtime and has wonderful results. Dr Huskisson is in such high demand that he travels to Hermanus, Knysna, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg once a month to treat his aesthetic clients. Picture Theory - An interaction with the work of the late David Goldblatt, the nternationally acclaimed South African photographer who focused on the complex realities of daily life under the apartheid regime. Exploring the work of David Goldblatt through an exhibition of his photographic prints, the film Goldblatt (directed by Daniel Zimbler, 2017), a selection of texts, workshops, seminars, residencies and a reading room. “I wasn’t on the scene at the riots and the focal points of political life and I gradually realized that events themselves were for me much less interesting than the conditions that lead to events. I was looking obliquely at things.” A4 ARTS FOUNDATION I www.a4arts.org 23 Buitenkant Street, District Six.
