hello art ARCHETYPOCALYPSE TILL 3 JUNE STEVENSON ART GALLERY, BUCHANAN BUILDING, 160 SIR LOWRY ROAD, WOODSTOCK An exhibition of new work by Mawande Ka Zenzile. Ka Zenzile draws a link between politics and perception and explores how this affects the ways in which we understand art. The new body of work shifts deeper into non-representational imagery; here ideologies are sieved and converted into material for the works, and text takes on a greater prominence in the artist’s visual language. Ka Zenzile continues his rejection of visual schemas or literary conceptual frameworks as access points to his
ideas and creativity. He affirms his predominant use of cow dung as painting medium alongside oil paint. His subject matter derives from various sources, including but not limited to his own IsiXhosa modality, questions around ontology, popular imagery as well as socio-political and esoteric knowledge. He observes that our understanding of art, just like our perception of reality, is continuously dictated by materialist worldviews, dogmatic ideologies, and archetypes, which are circulated throughout western art history. From his disenchantment with dominant worldviews, Ka Zenzile seeks to destabilise the component parts of hegemonic systems of thought, opening the possibility for radical ways of thinking about the hegemonies of perception.

Charango Bar & Grill: A Non-Accidental Pairing Charango Peruvian Grill & Bar has introduced the ‘Wine Society’ series. These events are held on the last Tuesday of every month, where Charango partners with different wine estates and hosts a unique food and wine pairing dinner. This month, Charango Grill and Bar hosted Iona Wines from the Elgin region to take part in their new exclusive series. The challenge, arising from such an event is for the Executive chef of Charango, Kieran Whyte, together with each winemaker, to provide a full, indulgent experience of 6 different alcoholic drinks and 5 courses. Guests will taste the wines and enjoy the perfectly paired Peruvian inspired dishes, creating a unique five course dining experience. Beverages served ranged from a delicious welcoming cocktail, to a crisp Grappa to end the night. In between we were served with a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, the One Man Band White 2015, a 2015 Pinot Noir & the One Man Band Red 2011. All wines served were carefully double checked by Iona’s own Jacqui Henderson. Head Chef Kieran Whyte, known for his meticulous approach,
took a careful attention and re-evented his dishes and cooking to complement the wines served on the evening. He is doing so for every monthly pairing in a way that brings together his Peruvian cuisine to adjust with each wine estate the restaurant hosts. Our menu for the evening included Atún Nikkei (Seared Tuna Takai 2.0), New Style Ceviche, Pato Y Remolacha of sugar & beer smoked duck, Vientre De Credo consisting roast Pork belly, truffled Cancha, torcin and blackened tenderstem. The ‘After Dinner Coffee’ was made with Coffee panna cotta, coffee crumble & chocolate cake. The unique flavours blossomed with each portion and truly came to fruition when paired with the selected wines. Every last Wednesday of the month sees another well picked wine estate from the Western Cape that brings the best of their latest wines to create a one of a kind, inner urban experience that will leave you spellbound. The winemaker and chef will be present at the event to talk you through the flavour combinations and to answer any questions you may have about the food or wine being served. A true cape winelands tasting experience, right in the heart of Cape Town.

doing good AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE AND SPA ESTABLISHED A RHINO ORPHANAGE FOR THE WESTERN CAPE Nearly 16 months ago, Aquila Private Game Reserve was faced with the daunting task of raising and rehabilitating an orphaned rhino calf. Over the months that followed the team faced and overcame many obstacles and challenges that come with handrearing a wild animal. Searl Derman, owner of Aquila said, “It has been a thrill to watch this little rhino grow into the magnificent animal we now know as Osita.” The growing scourge of poaching countrywide means that more and more rhino calves are left abandoned to fend for themselves. Poaching nationally, and particularly in the Kruger Park area, has reached pandemic proportions and add to this the dense bush riddled with snares that kill animals indiscriminately. The Western Cape, on the other hand, has wide open spaces which gives little cover to the criminal with no snares or opportunistic poaching. Although organised crime poachers are active throughout South Africa the majority of the opportunist and subsistence bush meat poachers are concentrated up north. With the experience gained and the infrastructure set up for Osita, it seemed that the only natural progression would be for Aquila to open its doors to any rhinos needing assistance. They now have the facilities to raise orphaned rhinos in a safe and secure environment with highly experienced staff to give these orphans the best chance possible. Animal companionship for baby rhinos is imperative and the ideal companion would be another rhino. Armed with these facilities and knowledge Aquila started to put out feelers for any baby rhinos that might find themselves orphaned and in need of immediate help. Aquila has been approached to assist with 4 orphans to date, who are currently being stabilised prior to transportation.

The orphanage will not be open to the public, this is in the best interests of the rhino’s rehabilitation and security, it will be funded through the NGO “Saving Private Rhino” and Aquila, with the hope of further funding coming from Corporate and Private donations as well as an active volunteer program. Around the clock security as well as tons of lucerne and thousands of litres of equine milk formula is needed, add to this the strict hygiene practices make this a very rewarding albeit expensive project. In addition, “Saving Private Rhino” intends to rehabilitate and release rhinos who have suffered gruesome facial and respiratory injuries due to poaching incidences. This will require the services of our vets who will provide lifesaving reconstructive surgery to allow these traumatised animal to breathe and eat normally. For more information on the orphanage please facebook/ aquilasafari facebook/ARC

TOUCH POOL The staff and volunteers provide visitors with fascinating snippets of ocean information, thereby enhancing the quality of any visit substantially. Visit www.aquarium.co.za COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Visit www.cool-runnings.co.za for more. Visitors can spend time in the Reptile Bay where Madagascan reptiles (chameleons and plated lizards), tortoises, Australian skinks and bearded dragons and a couple of noisy parrots are housed. A large aviary hosts all kinds of ex-pet birds such as budgies, love birds, pigeons and doves, as well as guinea pigs with wild hair! The outdoor garden hosts a Meerkat enclosure and lots of free range ducks and chickens, waiting for children to feed them with packets of seeds bought from the gift shop.

Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.
Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.
After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. As the name suggests, and just like the character in the much-loved Lewis Carrol story, the White Rabbit evokes mystery, adventure, curiosity and whimsical play. For creative director of local jewellery brand, White Rabbit Days (WRD), Helen Andrews, it was these values that pre-empted its launch, during a stint in London a few years ago whilst living, working and travelling there. ‘I was compelled to hand cut leather into a shape and wear those shapes as earrings. These were the first official WRD designs and as I was working and living in London, myself and these freshly cut jewels experienced that big bold city together,’ she says. Helen started referring to her days missioning around London as ‘white rabbit days’ because she started to treat them as adventures that led to different discoveries and experiences not to mention feelings, states of being and ways of seeing the world. All the while her jewellery-making was igniting in ways she never thought it would thanks to this new attitude of adventure. ‘I call it “white rabbiting” and during my time in London it was a way that I learnt and experienced the world, which then led to the creative spark for new pieces which in turn go adventuring with their wearers,’ she says.

It’s a conceptual methodology that is the basis for the brand, but also one that Helen lives her life by. ‘I’d designate days to “white rabbiting” where I would pick a start point with no destination in mind, say a book store, café or viewpoint and let the day take me. I’d talk to strangers, get onto a bus in the “wrong” direction, amble through side streets and really just experience the day. I still do this as a means of garnering inspiration for my ranges’ she says.
She has a team of dedicated professionals all passionate about their role in the brand and who Helen believes each pass something onto the pieces that go through their hands. There is also a lot of emphasis put on play, tinkering and experimentation. ‘Our dagger shape was born when I cut a triangle out of a neckpiece and the remaining leather pieces were such interesting shapes as they framed the face in a new way. The shape of these daggers is now a part of our new logo – a reminder to walk through life with our eyes wide open.’ Working mainly with leather, brass and copper, WRD’s newest range is launching this month on 18th and 19th May and is Helen’s boldest collection yet. It’s a range inspired by Cape Town’s inner city architectural patina and geometric shapes therein. The ‘white-rabbiting’, in the run-up to its creation, was spending many days walking the city streets from her home in Greenpoint to her workspace in the inner city. ‘The great thing about Cape Town’s creative scene right now is that customers are becoming more conscious of what they buy and are supporting local makers. This is spurring an industry of creatives to keep pushing to develop world-class products with a definitively African spirit and aesthetic. And what an absolute pleasure to grow a brand in such good company.’ Visit whiterabbitdays.com for more.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Hello Cape Town May 2017 l

we’ve seen With the latest trend of wellness and health, Hello Cape Town decided to touch base with one of Cape Town’s most dynamic and highly successful business owners Allan Scott & Mareldia Jones of Lokkima. Lokkima has grown rapidly over the last few years based on consistently excellent patient results, with the most innovative cosmetic and beauty treatments, combined with the most up to date technology. So, we grabbed a cuppa and had a chat over society’s highly debated and most effective treatment: ‘Fat Freezing’
Who are you? I’m Allan Scott, I started the company in Cape Town. I was previously in the marketing & teaching sector and decided to move into the Health & Beauty industry. I am Mareldia Jones, I am the owner of the Durbanville branch. I worked in the corporate industry for most of my life, but I couldn’t felt I wasn’t making a difference in people’s lives. With Lokkima, I feel I can share a journey with each of my clients and I love seeing them reach their goals. Who or what is Lokkima? Lokkima is a company that was formed in the UK, it basically means ‘Wave’ in Estonian. As the Fat Freezing process is where the adipose - or fatty - tissue is cooled, the fat cells die and then are excreted through your lymphatic system. Essentially it is water in your system that washes away the fat. Hence, we thought Lokkima was appropriate. What is Fat Freezing? Started approximately 8 years ago in a small state in the USA called Pensacolo. Specialists discovered that the young children all had small dimples inside their cheeks, the origin of this phenomenon was from the frozen lollipops they would eat. The fat cells were being destroyed by the icy temperatures of the lollipops and so dimples were being formed. Therein, a company decided to re-create this type of ‘formula’ in a machine. This machine is
principally the same as liposuction, except it is non-invasive, non-surgical and with no side-effects. Cryolipolysis was introduced to the market. This revolutionary FDAapproved treatment has been around for around 8 years. After the treatment, the final results will show after about 40 days as the fatty tissues need time to make their way through your lymphatic system. Process and are there any dangers? We select and place our machine the area of interest, the machine sucks fat in the area, we drop the temperature between -2 & -8 and leave it on for 30 minutes. Many companies go higher for longer – the danger is the client could get frost bite. We are exceptionally cautious for time limit and temperature. There are no dangers whatsoever in this process, it is very safe. In South Africa, you need to be a therapist to do the treatment. However, Lokkima has a training programme and will train individuals to be certified to operate the machines. Do you offer other products? Yes, we offer Facelifts – this has been made popular by Oprah Winfrey & Dr. Oz. Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,
especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE
#MarineBig5
Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
