ICAPULETI E I MONTECCHI Drawing on the earliest versions of the Romeo and Juliet story (the source material for Shakespeare’s classic), Bellini chose to cast his star-crossed lovers as a soprano and mezzo-soprano; their sensuous duets, full of Bellini’s trademark long-breathed melodies, are highlights of this bel canto gem. PROOF The play concerns Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert`s death, his ex-graduate student, Hal, discovers a paradigm-shifting proof
about prime numbers in Robert`s office. The title refers both to that proof and to the play`s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof`s authorship? Along with demonstrating the proof`s authenticity, the daughter also finds herself in a relationship with 28-year-old Hal. Throughout, the play explores Catherine`s fear of following in her father`s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally and her desperate attempts to stay in control.

market as in agora
In recent years Cape Town has experienced a blossom of weekend markets. They function as a pantry stocking place for fresh products and local crafts from talented citizens and as a favourite social gathering for young urbanists and families. Having an abundance of food stalls that cater for any taste and diet, being freed from the time limitation in a restaurant, the secure environment and the long tables at almost every site, brings back the ancient concept in which friends and neighbours mingle with visitors from close and far, sharing a shaded seat and exchanging words for a few hours. These are venues for laid-back interaction. Places for authentic meetings with locals. NEIGHBOUR GOODS MARKET The inner city pioneer. Fresh vegetables and fruit, food stalls to cater for all food choices. Halaal, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten and Sugar-free, Lactose Intolerant, Raw and Organic food preferences are all represented, along with a range of local fashion designers. Address: The Old Biscuit Mill, Albert Road. The market is open from 9:00 to 15:00 every Saturday, rain or shine. Entry is free.

beautiful farm - more than beautiful
With respect to Mother Nature and the fruit she bares for the land owners in the area, the Bottelary Conservancy was established. It is estimated to be as small as 3%-5% of the total Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, totally surrounded by populated land, but it holds part of the Renosterveld - the Cape Floristic Region – a global hotspot. It is best visited during the flowering period from August to mid-November. The Bottelary Conservancy is a wonderful opportunity to explore these wonders by foot or on bicycle along an 80 kilometer MTB route. Mooiplaas is a starting point for both. Tielman Roos, the estate viticulturist, will guide you and share his knowledge when prior arrangements are made.
Bottelary Hills, the less travelled part of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, carries its three centuries of agricultural history in the name. Bottelary, Dutch for ‘pantry’, is the area settled by hard working farmers that supplied old Cape Town with fresh farm products. Situated on the cool side of Stellenbosch, enjoying the soft south-westerly wind and lovingly worked for generations, the area keeps producers signature fruits and wines. Mooiplaas Wine Estate & Nature Reserve (Afrikaans for ‘Beautiful Farm’) is situated in the heart of the area, the Bottelary Conservancy. A small turn off the M23 leads you through a long tree avenue, up the hill to a road that ends when you get to a heavenly garden. But we’ll get back to that later.

l Hello Cape Town May 2019
The Mooiplaas Manor House is a national monument. A pristine example of Cape Dutch architecture, built at 1833 with many original artifacts, including a wood panel that tells the story of South Africa’s early decades. The self-catering unit with antique furniture, crisp white linen and towels is available to rent – a night in a fairytale. The tasting room and garden are open for day visitors 7 days a week most of the year. Closed on Sundays during the winter months (June, July and August). Bring your own picnic and choose your spot in one of the seating areas around the garden. Romantic cast iron furniture, old shading trees and leafy pergolas, rolling lawns and a
large variety of flora and fauna creates picture perfect scenery for a day out in the winelands. You might also notice some special wooden furniture around the garden. They are a re-birth of old wine barrels, handcrafted by a resident employee. Some pieces are on sale in the tasting room and specific orders can be placed too. Being one of the largest properties in the area, with a variety of vines and different direction facing slopes, translates to a large and interesting range of wines. The top range includes Rosalind, Latin for ‘most beautiful rose’ and an awardwinning Boudreaux blend.
Tabakland honours the father that planted tobacco in the old days. It is a cultivar Cabernet Sauvignon. Laatlan, the youngest in the family, is a noble late harvest. Each harvest has the potential to produce only one or two barrels of this wine and since the search is for a specific sweetness, this wine was bottled only twice since the Roos brothers are running the estate. Houmed, Afrikaans for keeping faith, is produced from an old bush vine, growing on dry land, planted in 1973. It is a Chenin vine and the wine is fermented in wood barrels. The range ends with the Dual MCC- a signatory Method Cap Classique bubbly.
There is also a collection of six, family friendly, easy drinking and modern style wines, each named after the flavour that comes across when drinking. Making it easy to pair with your food and mood. They are a reflection of the Langtafel- young wines to share, available too. The pleasant surprise we found on the packed shelves in the tasting room was the Baruzzo. A light, Chianti like, 9.5% alcohol wine that is meant to be drunk cold, preferably every day. Most of the Mooiplaas wines are also available at the The Bottelary Hills Wine Centre, Devon Place Corner of Koelenhof Road and Bottelary Road. Tutored local residents will guide you through the flavours of the region. At the center you can also get day and annual permits to visit and ride through the conservancy.

memories to last
THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINT NEW COLLECTABLE RANGE South Africa’s 25 young years as a constitutional democracy is the subject of the South African Mint Company’s (SA Mint) ‘SA25 – Celebrating South Africa’ coin series, which commemorates the rights and freedoms espoused by South Africa’s Constitution. On April 27th, 25 years ago, South Africans went to the polls in the country’s first democratic elections following the end of apartheid rule. To commemorate this milestone, the SA Mint has issued new collectable coins in base metal, sterling-silver and pure gold. South Africa’s Constitution has been hailed as a document worth emulating because it includes what constitutional scholars call ‘positive rights’. Harvard Law School scholar, Cass Sunstein, has called it ‘the most admirable Constitution in the history of the world’, while Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a United States Supreme Court justice, has praised it for dealing with modern challenges, calling it more contemporary than the US Constitution. On the new coin series, Tumi Tsehlo, Managing Director of the SA Mint, says, “It is our most democratic coin thematically. The design ideas come from those born in a free South Africa in response to what freedom meant to them. We worked with many young and talented artists to bring to life their vivid imagery of a constitutional democracy.” The highest court in South Africa, born of the country’s first democratic Constitution in 1994, features prominently on the reverse of the R500 pure-gold coin, which depicts the building that houses the Constitutional Court, including the detail of the beautiful door which has the 27 constitutional rights engraved in its wood, as well as the popular skyline of Johannesburg in the background. Designed by architect Shaun Gaylard, the coin’s reverse is inspired by the interaction between the building, its inhabitants and its visitors. This coin will be available during May 2019.
26
l Hello Cape Town May 2019
The reverse of the R50 sterling-silver collectable coin features the constitutional democracy in action, symbolised by a line of people queuing to vote as they did on 27 April 1994 in the first democratic elections in South Africa. It was the first time that all South Africans were allowed to vote. The snake-like qualities of the queue of people running into the distance was the primary motivation for the design by Lady Skollie (Laura Windvogel) who drew inspiration from khoisan rock paintings and the element of waiting for a better tomorrow (in a queue). ‘We the people of South Africa’ is the theme for the R50 bronze alloy coin, and these words feature prominently on the reverse of the coin by designer Peter Mammes. The line is the preamble of the Constitution of South Africa. The two joined hands symbolising togetherness also depict people, ethnicity and religion. The detail in the pattern of the crosses draws attention to the ‘mark’ that voters make on the ballot paper. Both the R50 sterling-silver and the R50 bronze alloy coins share a common obverse: the national coat of arms together with the date of issue, ‘2019’, and the words ‘South Africa’ written in all of the official languages. The obverse of the R500 gold coin features the national coat of arms together with the date of issue, ‘2019’, and the words ‘South Africa’. The bronze alloy and silver coins are now available and can be purchased at SA Mint’s retail store in Centurion or through the various mall activations that the SA Mint will host throughout the country. “The SA Mint is proud to continue in its long-standing tradition of crafting coins which South Africans can treasure. The new collectable coins demonstrate our roots in the past, and we are confident that they will serve to encourage all South Africans to work towards contributing to brighter chapters in our country’s history book,” says Tsehlo. “These collectable coins will serve as a tangible and visible reminder to all South Africans of our hard-fought freedom and our constitutional legacy.” Durban-based Garth Walker designed the font which appears on all the coins in the series. He combined all the documented lettering, redrawing it as a unicase family. The original letter forms, within reason, accurately reflect apartheid-era prisoner hand-lettering, graffiti, and prison authority signage. Over time, the font came to be referred to as ‘the face of a nation’. It was first used by the Constitutional Court on the outside of the actual building and subsequently across a wide variety of applications. The collectable coins (pure-gold R500, sterling-silver R50 and bronze R50) are available for purchase as individual coins or as part of a variety of coin sets. 25,000 pieces produced of the base metal coins. 10,000 of the silver and only 125 units of the gold. The base metal retails at R195, Silver at R895 and Gold at R27 900. These can also be bought in sets. As a set of 9 coins (including all the above and a proof set of the 6 circulations coins) for R29 595 and as a set of 8 coins (contains the base metal coin, silver and a proof set of the 6 circulations coins) for R 1 695. Only 225 9 coin sets are available and only 2250 8 coin sets will be made.

Consumers benefit because they get to sample top quality seafood that is traceable – having travelled along a transparent and legal supply chain.
Abalobi works through technology – the fishers log their catch and vessel details on the online Abalobi marketplace where the restaurants can then purchase this fish directly from the source. Consumers who then order this seafood off the menu are able to scan the QR code provided by the restaurant which shows who caught the seafood/fish, where, when and how it was caught – making it a completely traceable, transparent and connected dining experience.
SAFARI
Abalobi sources seafood directly from over 200 registered small-scale fishers and connects these fishers to over 100 restaurants that then purchase this seafood. This empowers these smallscale fishers and allows them to make a sustainable living by being paid a fair price for what they catch. To date over R2 million has been paid directly from participating restaurants to the fishers.

“Dieu Donné” translates literally into “A gift from God”. The farm is situated high on the cool south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which tempers the sun, ensuring that our grapes ripen slowly. Thanks to our cool summer conditions & unique soils, this lends to the unique flavours and characters of the terroir in the grapes. Merlot being the flagship wine on the farm, we invite you to visit our tasting facility or enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace while soaking in the beautiful views.

MOOIPLAAS WINE ESTATE & PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE
Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve is situated among the majestic mountains and fertile valleys in the Stellenbosch Winelands, approximately 40km east of Cape Town. Mooiplaas is a historic and traditional working wine farm. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of ancient mineral-rich soils in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, overlooking Cape Town. There is a difference of approximately 235 m between the highest and the lowest areas on the estate. From the highest point of the estate (370 m above sea level) one has a panoramic view over the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right. Here Tielman and Louis Roos produce a range of environmentally friendly wines rooted in tradition and artisan techniques that make the most of the unique terroir. In 1995 Mooiplaas registered about 70ha of the farm as a nature reserve, conserving critically endangered fynbos species.

better done than said
For one morning the kitchen at the Cape Town Hotel School turned into an Iron Chef kitchen with 5 stations, headed by some of the best hotels chefs of the city and the winelands. It was exciting, it was quick, it was thrilling and the smells were heavenly for any foodaholic. But let’s start from the beginning. WWF/SASSI South Africa, the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) was established to drive change in the local seafood industry by working with suppliers and sellers of seafood, as well as informing and inspiring consumers to make sustainable seafood choices.
Since 2004 they try to maintain contact with every chef, restaurateur and fishing company. SASSI aims to promote sustainability of seafood in order to keep our ocean balanced and to do it all while giving a palate of possibilities and direction of how to enjoy the fruits of the sea. Their success is with every Capetonian in the food and tourism industry knowing the ‘Seafood Green – Orange – Red list’ and adhering to it. This year they’ve taken a new step in educating the tourism industry launching a cook-off competition to show and share with each other what some of the big names in the Cape Town gourmet scene are able to deliver. FEDHASA Cape, the local brunch of the national trade association for the hospitality industry that includes accommodation and catering sectors (est. 1949) was asked to help by showing example and enrolling the figures among our chefs.

Hello Cape Town May 2019
And they came. To show, to learn, to teach and to share their creativity and love for sustainability and fine dining. Showing us all what can be achieved. Five teams, headed by Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg from Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, Executive Chef Jocelyn Myers-Adams from the South African Chefs Association, Executive Chef Shane Louw from Monte Rochelle in Franschhoek, Executive Chef Judi Fourie from the Victoria and Alfred Hotel and Executive Chef Lindsay Venn from Tsogo Sun. They acted as team captains and gracefully managed to tutor learning chefs from the Mitchell’s Plain School of Skills, assigned to them, while promptly meeting the 45 minutes time frame. It was a well-orchestrated demonstration thanks to the prominent figures that formed each of the teams, showing both their abilities and their long standing experience being team players in the best kitchens around the Cape. This included Chef De Cuisine Dion Vengatass from Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, Chef Thierry Chenge Berquin Kapata from Cape Town Comedy Club, Chefs Ernest Ngaliphi and Roland Titus from Colosseum Luxury Hotel, Executive Chef Heinrich de Jongh from Helderberg Village, Executive Chef Wesli Jacobs from Spier wine farm, Executive head chef Farah Barry and Food & Beverage and Events Manager Sivuyile Sivu Radu from The Grand Daddy Hotel, Executive Sous chef Ziyaad Brown from The Silo Hotel, Chef Douglas from The Treehouse Boutique Hotel, Chef Nicolette from Villa Zest Boutique Hotel, Executive Chef Geoff West from Holiday Inn Cape Town, Executive Chef Juan Neethling from Tsogo Sun and Chef Stefan Bekker from Erinvale Estate Hotel and Spa. The big names doesn’t end yet. The 4 judges, each a South African caliber chef, took upon themselves the daunting task of sampling what we could only smell. Those were Chef Carl Van Rooyen, Chef Pete Goffe-Wood, Chef Jason Whitehead and Chef Nadine Pospech. We took the time to name them all since these chefs are committed to delivering sustainability on your plate while keeping high standards and the integrity required with fine dining and nothing short of it. All cookware for the competition was provided by Banks Kitchen shop and later donated to the Mitchell’s Plain School of Skills. Products supplied by Checkers.

wine of exile
A selection of historical, rare wine artifacts are on exhibit at Groot Constantia and visitors are being offered a rare chance to view these museum owned relics, which are on loan until 21 June. Items that will be on display, amongst others, include cut glass crystal wine goblets and glasses used by Napoleon whilst on St Helena; wine decanters; wine coolers; a ship decanter with outward sloping side and wide base for greater stability at sea; and the memoirs of Napoleons chamberlain that document details of Napoleons daily life on St Helena and his love for Constantia wyn (Constantia wine), specifically the Grand Constance which is being produced to this day. This unique exhibition, entitled “Wine of Exile: The wine of Napoleon on St Helena unveils the history of the wine that Napoleon drank while in exile on St Helena Island from 1815, until his death in 1821. Every month 30 bottles of Constantia wine were shipped to St Helena. The Wine of Exile exhibition is taking place in the historical Cloete Cellar at Groot Constantia, the original birthplace of the famous Constantia wyn (Constantia wine).
