By re-imagining used oil barrels, Hamed Ouattara creates furniture pieces that radiate with an African soul.
Studio Hamed Ouattara, situated in the heart of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s energetic capital, is led by self-taught artist and designer Hamed Ouattara. Resulting from a reaction to his immediate African environment, where oil barrels in popping primary colours are discarded after use, his designs transgress continental borders, garnering praise by top international gallerists, with purchases by important collectors around the globe. These disused oil barrels – hammered, shaped and repurposed by hand – offer a distinct aesthetic to his work, which turns the salvaged metal to a functional, artistic homeware product, be it a collectibleedition dining table or a multi-use console. ‘Through recycling, I’m able to offer a truly local, innovative response to waste products made from scarce resources in our region,’ he explains. Hamed’s minimalist philosophy results in unique pieces that have each been nurtured by his craftsmanship. Working in a country where constant power outages are the norm, and equipment is difficult to procure, he uses

these challenges to his advantage. The hinges, nails and tools necessary for each piece are crafted in his studio, meaning that every detail is carefully considered and utterly bespoke. Hamed first exhibited in Brussels in 1998, and, since then, has shown his work across Europe and in the USA. As a key member of Design Network Africa since its inception, he has participated in its group exhibitions at Graphic Africa in London, and GUILD in Cape Town. In 2014, he completed a residency at the Museum of Modern Art of Algiers (MaMa), and was the recipient of an African Design Award. Represented by Cape Town’s Southern Guild Collectible Design Gallery, Hamed’s work was shown at Design Miami/Basel in 2015, a testament to the exceptional quality of his work, sealing his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary African design. ‘Art has a role to play in the development of Africa,’ he insists, ‘and my work reflects this conviction.’ Hamed’s designs pay homage to his cultural ties, re-interpreting
traditional patterning and highlighting Burkina Faso’s artisanal metal-working heritage, addressing a modern global audience through African innovation. Photographs by David Crookes for Design Network Africa.

ON STAGE DAVID KRAMER’S ORPHEUS IN AFRICA
LET’S MIX IT: THE BEST OF & MORE
Orpheus in Africa is based on the little known story of Orpheus McAdoo and the Virginia Jubilee Singers’ tour of Queen Victoria’s colonies in the last decade of the 19th Century.
Features the inimitable duo of Gary Naidoo and Chad Abrahams, with Abrahams playing the role of Hadji Fatgiyah Bardien, the chatty talk show “hostess” who broadcasts her talk show from the lounge of her Walmer Estate home.
Orpheus McAdoo was a free born son of a slave and a graduate from The Hampton Institute in Virginia. He was the first Black American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his group achieved unprecedented success. At the same time the musical charts the evolution of Black American music from spirituals (Jubilee songs) to jazz and includes several original songs by David Kramer. The Fugard Theatre, 22 Sept, Tickets R110 - R220 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi. BAD JEWS
This time she has four “interviewees” (all played by Naidoo) who are literally a mixed bag – from local ex-Miss Gay South Africa, Felicity Mybergh (who has delusions of hosting her own talk show one day) to larger-than- life former Zumo wrestler (the female version of Sumo wrestling),Sisanda Gugushe who is always willing to share her weight loss tips with audiences. Also in the line-up is pint-sized North Korean Masterchef, Pi-On-Mi who is here to promote his new dumpling balls. The show has some of the best moments of past shows as well as brand new material, like on-screen home-brewed adverts and a new character or two that Hadji Fatgiyah will be hosting on her show. Throw in funnyman Wayne Mckay and the stage is set for another laugh-a-minute romp. “Let’s Mix It: The Best of & More” is written by Rafiek Mammon& Gary Naidoo, and is directed by Mammon. Artscape Theatre, until 10 Oct, Tickets R100 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi. GROUNDED
After the death of their grandfather, Poppy, a family heirloom propels cousins Daphna and Liam into a domestic battle of honour, faith and heritage. The devoutly Jewish Daphna is at odds with her secular cousin Liam, an entitled young man detached from his cultural traditions. Caught in the middle are Jonah, Liam’s younger brother, and Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend Melody, who just wants everyone to get along. When the group is forced to spend the night in close quarters, hilarity and mayhem ensues. Earlier this year the production garnered a five star review from the Jewish Chronicle (UK). “There is something particularly remarkable about the way Harmon explores how post-Holocaust Jewish generations live with the legacy of the Shoah (Holocaust). Remarkable, because whereas most dramatists would address that territory with sombre respect, Harmon does it with irreverent wit.” John Nathan – The Jewish Chronicle (UK), January 2015. The Fugard Theatre, until end of Dec, Tickets R130 - R150 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

The story of Melvin van Niekerk, a constable dealing with the modern day pressures of being a South-African policeman. What was once his dream job is now a constant struggle, facing the harsh realities of being in the SAPS and the effect it has on his family. Age: 16 LV
Cape Town Opera, in collaboration with the UCT Opera School and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, presents an evening composed of four new homegrown operas. Four notable South African composers have teamed up with four acclaimed writers to create half hour works that are powerful and innovative, telling contemporary African stories in imaginative new ways. THE APPLICATION. Music by ROBERT FOKKENS; Libretto by LAURENCE ALLAN; Directed by GEOFFREY HYLAND: Mrs Makeleni needs a passport. Her grandson was born and raised in the UK after her son emigrated, and she has never met him – indeed, she has never left South Africa. Now she wants to travel to his wedding, and must apply to Home Affairs for her first ever passport – a process which proves rather more troublesome than expected. BLOOD OF MINE. BY WAME MOLEFHE; Music by SIBUSISO NJEZA; Libretto by JANICE HONEYMAN; Directed by MARCUS DESANDO: In a small village in Botswana, a devoted wife, Sethunya and her macho cattle farmer husband, Ntsimane, are unable to conceive. There is huge pressure on the couple to start a family. Sethunya is accused of not being able to bear children and is shunned by the community. She prays fervently to fall pregnant. ‘Miraculously’ she falls pregnant, and her prayers are finally answered - but years later it is revealed that Ntsimane is not the father of the child. In a male dominated world, and contrary to the community’s belief, it was in fact Ntsimane who was unable to have children and not Sethunya. So who is the father of this child? Blood of Mine is a poignant story of reality, tragedy, humour and pain. BESSIE: THE BLUE-EYED XHOSA. Music by ANGELIQUE MOUYIS; Libretto by MKHULULI MABIJA; Directed by MARCUS DESANDO: In the late 1730s, an unknown East Indiaman smashed to pieces on the reefs of Lambasi Bay on South Africa’s Wild Coast. The next morning the local inhabitants stumbled upon Bessie, a seven-
year-old English girl huddled beside a rock on the beach. She was not the first to be shipwrecked on these treacherous shores. Many before her had starved to death and some had walked hundreds of miles to trading posts. But these locals chose to take Bessie home and bring her up as one of their own. She grew to be a woman of legendary beauty and wisdom, eventually becoming the Great Wife of a prince. So began the enduring legacy of a dynasty that extends to many of today’s Xhosa royal families. ANTI-LAIUS. Music by ADRIAN MORE; Libretto by JOAN HAMBIDGE; Directed by GEOFFREY HYLAND: Anti-Laius reflects on violence in its different manifestations and the mythological story of King Oedipus is used to represent the strife between father and son; between creative person and opponent. French history and the recent Charlie Hebdo attack form the backdrop of the story narrated by a choir and two characters. The opera reflects on the death of Deon van der Walt, the famous South African tenor, who after his death is idealized as a pure operatic tragic character singing for a table in heaven. WE’VE BEEN TO The Launch of Ovation Thokozani Wines was born from Diemersfontein almost ten years ago. What started out as many would have said “just another BEE project” has turned into one of South Africa’s most sensational true life stories of a real breakthrough in the development of a BBBEE business. It is a story of generosity, hope, inspiration, dedication - and at the end of the day human development. Thokozani started from a 30% ownership to being officially the proud shareholders of 80% of the company, and with Diemersfontein Wines owning the remaining 20%. Thokozani also owns the conferencing business on Diemersfontein, and this also includes accommodation facilities. (4 Star) Thokozani is owned by the staff of Diemersfontein, and each and every person is not only involved as a staff member of this venture, but also as a family member in a massively passionate endeavour. Last week Tuesday, Thokozani proudly spread its wings when they launched their new wine label, Ovation - a collection of 3 wines, exclusively produced for Woolworths. At this celebration, held at home on Diemersfontein Wine Estate, Thokozani welcomed (amongst many dignitaries) the Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde, Me Joyene Isaacs, the Head of Department of Western Cape Agriculture, Mrs Grace Davies, wife of our Minister of Trade and Industry, Ivan Oertle, Woolworths Wine specialist, to mention but a few. The grand occasion was met with tremendous respect by their guests, who were delighted by the story of Thokozani, and enjoyed the marvellous arrange of dishes paired specially to the new wines. The wines include a Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and a Pinotage. Denise Stubbs (Director) spoke from the heart when she told the guests the phenomenal story of how Thokozani began, the obstacles and criticisms they overcame, and also how the people of Diemersfontein are the pillars of the
business. She shared with guests how the staff team within the business have been transformed and uplifted to become not only shareholders, but business owners in their own right. “The success story of standing here today, and launching this new and beautiful brand is evidence of the pride and passion our people have.” said Denise Stubbs. Special mention and thanks were given to David & Sue Sonnenberg (owners of Diemersfontein) who were the founders of this initiative and have invested not only their time and efforts in the creation of Thokozani, but continue to support the growth and development of their people therein. Woolworths South Africa is not only thrilled about their new acquisition to their wine range, but feel proud to be involved with such a dynamic team of people - those from the vineyards to the tasting room - the heart that beats in Thokozani. Stubbs says “We have gone through a rigorous selection process, and have finally picked the fruit (not only those from the vine, she jokes) but we were certainly not granted any special favours in this process, and thus we know that our wines have found a place upon a shelf - because it deserves to be there!” Ovation wines will be available in all national Woolworths stores as of 12 October 2015.
For more information please visit the Thokozani website at www.thokozani.co.za (will be active soon) Follow us on Twitter @Thokozani_SA and Thokozani page on Facebook.

This blue mystical gem has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is thought that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood and release them from poor habits or addictions. It is also believed, that tanzanite is able to restore spiritual balance and good fortune. WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND INVERDOORN
The
SHARK WHISPERER
with Supreme Sharks
On a trip with Supreme Sharks, a shark cage diving company working from Kleinbaai, clients have the unique opportunity to meet the free diving shark expert Andre Hartman on the trip or at the clubhouse. Andre is one of South Africa’s few self-taught shark experts and is respected as such throughout the world. He was one of the first to take the ‘cage’ out of shark cage diving and his pioneering work with the Great White attracted numerous film crews to Kleinbaai, the shark capital of the world. He has featured in many documentaries for Discovery, CNN and National Geographic to name but a few. Andre got the name shark whisperer when he accidentally discovered that touching the tip of its snout would cause a shark to lung up and back in a trance-like manner for a few seconds. After his 2nd stroke he struggles to walk but is getting stronger every day and dreams of going back into the water with these fierce creatures. He now shares his knowledge of the Great White and multitude of stories with the crew and our passengers. “I’m just mesmerized by how they move and what they do, and that fascinates me. They’re like an airplane - they fly in the water. Those wings flex with the weight of the body.” Andre Hartman, African Voices, CNN 24 December 2014

Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination. The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Boulders Visitor Centre: +27(0) 21 786 2329. Gate hours: Winter: April - September 08:00 - 17:00, Summer: December - January 07:00 - 19:30; February - March - 08:00 - 18:30; October - November - 08:00 - 18:30. CAPE FUR SEAL
At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has reintroduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they
do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/ December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old.
Est. 1999
They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. Drumbeat Charters from Hout Bay Harbour cruise to Duiker Island between 4-6 time a day and you can get there by using MyCiti bus or the City Sightseeing red, double decker busses of the mini peninsula tour. Reservation is no necessary but if you’d like to check the option off a private cruise or more details see: www.drumbeatcharters.co.za or call 021 - 791 4441 GREAT WHITE SHARK
For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ART IN THE GARDEN AT KIRSTENBOSCH NBG Extinction! Dinosaurs, and Cycads? is a new exhibition in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research. The exhibition will run until June 2017. Visit www.sanbi.org for more information.

WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit www.sanparks.org BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that
