The bar houses a gorgeous oversized wine fridge to highlight a fine selection of local wines. Enjoy the peaceful beauty and commanding views of the rolling Constantiaberg mountain range from the wall-to-ceiling windows opening onto a herb garden which supplies the kitchen. The interior is impressive, boasting ornate pressed ceilings, an eclectic mix of chairs and lampshades and a golden bull’s head
Chef Martin Senekal offers the best, most authentic tapas in town. We indulged in the delicious beautiful menu and enjoy dishes which ranged from in his legendary Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna and Beef Shin Croquetas Sriracha aioli, to cooked pork neck, roasted sweet potatoes, char grilled zucchini with chimichurri. If that isn’t enough, we topped it off with an apple and walnut baked donut with a coconut macaron, butterscotch sauce, pistachio and milk chocolate ganache. The menu is outstanding and diverse – an absolute delight for the senses. We couldn’t recommend this establishment high enough. It is also the perfect venue for private function – be it small weddings to corporate gatherings as the establishment can seat 80 -100 people.

Justine Mahoney’s work represents an amalgamation of South African and Western references and timelines, where mass media meshes with our local culture, politics, stories and identities. For the artist, this experience is schizophrenic in nature due to her upbringing in this country during the 70s and 80s. Following her first series of characters, Innocence, Mahoney’s second series, Tainted, opens as a solo exhibition at Southern Guild this month. We sit down to discuss the ten bronze figures.
identified with that money-collection-box for disabled children – a figure of a girl holding her teddy with her leg in a brace. From this first miniature came “Girl with a Cast on Her Leg”, a 52cmtall bronze sculpture painted with enamel – my version of that supermarket money-collection girl. This girl in a red dress and pigtails brought forth the next nine pieces in rapid succession.
What does this series represent?
There was no break between Innocence and Tainted. There is a blur between them, a cross-pollination and inter-splicing of 70’s Joburg suburbia with retro science fiction, African initiation and the lifting of apartheid. It is a transition from one series to another, like the fears, dreams, nightmares and aspirations are bleeding out of that sugar coating and taking on forms of their own.
This show brings a feeling of transition from statements like “everything is fine, my dear” to “what on earth is going on?!”, moving from the comfortable to the uncomfortable, from utopia to dystopia, from innocence to awareness. The wool has been pulled from over the eyes of these characters, and these sentiments are revealed within this exhibition in the form of collages and sculptural pieces. Tell us a about your process before you start sculpting? I have a huge collection of imagery, which I have assembled over many years. These are cut and pasted into collages to form a character or entity or exquisite corpse (that drawing game that children play). The process takes forever as I form the perfect fragmentation of body parts. This operation, being mostly intuitive, then forms the disposition of each piece. At what point did you sit down and begin creating your first series, Innocence? There was no intention to create a series called Innocence. I began in 1999 to make a miniature bronze sculpture working through my first memory of having my leg in a cast at the age of three as I had a mysterious bone-degenerating condition. I spent that year in and out of hospital and forever after that I completely

I have to go through each series to get to the next one, and I believe 10 pieces exhaust the possibilities within each idea. For the next series, I feel like it’s pointing in the direction of mutilation, scarification, sexual awakening, personal power and self defense, all overlaid with a shameless amount of embellishment. What role do your children play in your creative process? They are part of it. I have two daughters, Ella and Biba, and I inhabit the same illusory domain as them as I watch them, listen to what they talk about, and see an inner world come alive through play. How do you name your figures? I think they whisper their names into my ear. Tainted will run from 14 October - 18 November 2016

we’ve seen What does being the ‘Blue Haired Betty’ entail? The Blue Haired Betty is not a persona; it is who I am on a day-to-day basis. Over the of years I have found it has been a signifying feature in my life - it is most certainly a conversation starter! *laughs* Naturally it was an easy pin up name. The Blue Haired Betty isn’t a game of dress up - it is my life and I like to continuously work on endorsing this way of living and growing this on a local & global scale. At his moment, in entirety, people are starting to engage in it and I feel it blossoming. It is important to really nurture it and educate other about the pin up and rockabilly lifestyle and promote it in the positive light it deserves. What does Gabbi do when she isn’t being Blue Haired Betty? *Laughs* You’ll hear this often: I’m a ‘Jill of All Trades’. I have 2 businesses which keeps me on my toes. I am the proud co-owner of AnonaMiss Beauty Emporium. We are the South African importers and distributors for the international brand Manic Panic. My brilliant partner Mischca does the day-to-day business whilst I do the marketing side of things. If that is not enough, I also managing my family restaurant: Catch 22 Beachside Grille & Bar. Most evenings you’ll find me here creating interesting new dishes and new cocktails. It’s a tough life! *giggle* In between I try have a social life and of course do as much as I can do in the pin up community. Talk to us about being a pin up? How did you get into it? I always find it an interesting topic to approach. ‘Pin up’ is seen as a thing to ‘become’, for me it was an evolution. If you can believe it, I used to be a full-on goth girl – black from head-to-toe in my younger years! My now fiancé has always been into rock music and also started getting into the rockabilly music. We had a 1972 Ford Fairlane which we used to take to the car shows which was always a blast. So you can say it kind of came as a gradual evolution as I came to discover this whole new world. Initially it really did start with the cars and the music. I’ve always been a dancer and I love true old school rock ‘n roll! Everything ‘pin up’ followed as I became immersed in the culture. I had finally found my place in the world. I have never been more comfortable and confident in my own skin. I can follow my traditional values and morals while still living in an alternative and unique lifestyle. It is the perfect amalgamation. I suppose one of the most defining moment I’d say was when I attending the Miss Viva Las Vegas Pageant in 2015. Internationally, it is the largest pageant that takes place and it still seems like a

It’s just and brilliant day of fun for the whole family. Who is your greatest inspiration? Wow! Apart from the 100’s of pin up girls whom I admire for their various attributes, I’d have to say my mom. What has been your greatest lesson learned in life? Dare to be different. This is incorporated in all aspects of my life, as Gabbi, as a business owner and as Blue haired Betty. Break the mould and stereotype! So yes, guess what? African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.
The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.
Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.
The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.
The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land
Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. Hiking up to Woodstock Cave
Have you seen the cave from De Waal Drive? It’s the Woodstock Cave and yes, you can get there by foot. This cave is one of the largest on Table Mountain. It’s formed by a long horizontal crack (50 metres wide by fifteen metres deep and three or four metres high at the entrance) halfway up Devil’s Peak that can clearly be seen from Woodstock and Salt River. If you’re up for an amazing panoramic Cape Town city, Lions Head and Table Bay view, this is it. Bring the kids (12+) and dogs! What to bring: Food & Water: Stuff your rucksack with delicious bits and bobs to enjoy a memorable picnic! Above all, it is important you keep yourself hydrated, so ensure you have plenty of water. Remember there are no dustbins, so keep it tidy and leave no trace. Hiking shoes, hats and sunblock: Naturally there will be a bit of climbing and a few wandering paths so you’ll need shoes with a strong ligature – you don’t have to necessarily buy hiking boots, but ensure those takkies have good grip! Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.

Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation.
