HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD INTO THE WILD

Designer Porky Hefer takes us to the heart of nature with furniture inspired by animal instincts It’s an oddity for someone to lists bird and spider nests and termite mounds among their favourite buildings in the world. But then designer Porky Hefer has never been one for conventional interpretations. And it’s such inspiration that has led him to create human-size birds’ nests as collectible pieces of furniture, which this year alone has been exhibited through Southern Guild at Grains of Paradise at R & Company in New York, Making Africa at Vitra Design Museum in Germany, and Design Miami/ Basel. October welcomes the opening of the first solo show of his work at the Southern Guild gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town. ‘Not many people are doing environmentally inspired pieces of this nature and especially at this scale,’ explains gallery co-founder Julian McGowan. ‘Porky’s work pushes boundaries and perceptions of what art and design are, and ultimately what furniture is and can be.’ The designer’s childhood dream to become a veterinarian may not have been realised, but the 2013 Southern Guild Design Foundation Icon Award winner has found a more revolutionary way to

connect with nature, using traditional craftspeople, techniques and natural materials to manifest his vision of building envorinments that people feel a personal, natural connection to. ‘The inspiration for my nests was the masked weaver - they are incredible architects,’ he explains. ‘I’ve studied their nest forms, techiniques and materials,’ he adds, talking about his interest in structures having a sense of place and a specific practicallity due to local knowledge and available materials.

Sponsored by Woodhead’s leather merchants, his monumental solo show will

Of these quirky animals, Porky says: ‘I try to get my work to connect with people on a very simple base note. One that is familiar but still personal.’

Having left a career in advertising, Porky has no formal training as a designer. ‘I tend to do things in a different way. I ask different questions and land up in a very different place to most. Much of the time what I try to do is impossible. After doing it, it’s obvious,’ he laughs about his organic process, which always starts off with a drawing, as opposed to a technical sketch, which he finds loses its humanity through its dismissal of the hand.

Get into spring at the

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW The Cape Town International Boat Show opens its doors at two iconic venues – the CTICC and V&A Waterfront – from 9 to 11 October and there’s something for everyone. The CTICC plays host to the ‘dryland’ part of the show and includes powerboats of all shapes and sizes – plus all the sporting gear that goes with them like skis and wakeboards, the Speaker Series covering topics as diverse as water safety, career opportunities on the waves and a presentation by Amazon explorer Davey du Plessis. In fact, Davey is about to embark on a solo paddle from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro, come and see the boat and hear his amazing story. For the more energetic show visitor there’s an amazing range of stand up paddle boards on show and you can even try one out on the canal at the CTICC. Down at the V&A Waterfront you can go on board some of the finest luxury cruisers available in sub-Saharan Africa. And what’s even more amazing is that many of these fantastic vessels are manufactured right here in Cape Town. If the sailing bug has tickled your fancy you can also try your hand while in the safe waters of the Victoria basin. There’s a rowing regatta on the Saturday, a rescue demonstration by the NSRI and for the adrenaline junkies you can try your hand at the Aquabat – a board powered by a jetski that allows you to rise several metres above the water and perform a variety of manoeuvres. Perhaps rather let the experts demo this rather – there are twice daily shows on Saturday and Sunday. Of particular interest is the sail training yacht Howard Davis that will be open for visitors at the V&A walk-on jetties. Launched in 1965 the yacht spent the next 25 years in service at the General Botha Academy in Grainger Bay where hundreds learned their sail and navigational skills. Entrance is R80 for adults and R20 for scholars and includes free transport aboard the red City Sightseeing buses between the CTICC and V&A Waterfront. If you’re looking to get even more value out of your trip to the Boat Show we’ve negotiated a 50% discount off entrance to the Springbok Experience and 10% off access to The Aquarium. Oh yes, and you can prepurchase your tickets online from www.computicket.co.za The Cape Town International Boat Show is about so much more than boats, for more information go to www.boatshow.co.za

ON STAGE DAVID KRAMER’S ORPHEUS IN AFRICA Orpheus in Africa is based on the little known story of Orpheus McAdoo and the Virginia Jubilee Singers’ tour of Queen Victoria’s colonies in the last decade of the 19th Century. Orpheus McAdoo was a free born son of a slave and a graduate from The Hampton Institute in Virginia. He was the first Black American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his group achieved unprecedented success. At the same time the musical charts the evolution of Black American music from spirituals (Jubilee songs) to jazz and includes several original songs by David Kramer. THE WHITE MAN’S GUIDE TO SACRIFICE The White Man’s Guide to Sacrifice about two young men, Fork and Scholtz who have just been accepted into the Lamborghini Club. This has been their dream for as long as they can remember. With the club’s connections, they will be fast-tracked up the corporate ladder and welcomed into the arms of luxury. Booya! In three days the club is coming over for the party of a lifetime, and they must impress. But there is a problem. The two young, white South African men find a living, breathing, defecating cow in their new and expensive apartment. But how did the cow get there? This is something that only happens to taxi and bus people, not Lambourgini people. The club cannot / must never find out. As ancestors, business card wielding entrepreneurs, and powerful personal assistants become involved, the two friends are presented with a choice: sacrifice their place in the Lambourgini Club, or seal their position in the blood of an innocent animal.

l Hello Cape Town October 2015

WE’VE BEEN TO GREENHOUSE AT THE CELLARS-HOHENORT GOT A NEW LOOK What started as a need for some new chairs and tables ended in a complete facelift of the entire restaurant. The grand old Hohenort building now has a fresh and new looking interior.

The design team of Hot Cocoa Interiors & Design, who were involved in the original Greenhouse design, have returned to create this new and exciting space: Dark, naked tables, leather & wooden chairs, eclectic art pieces give the space a modern and uncluttered feeling where the food can take centre stage. New table accessories, interesting crockery and cutlery further highlight cuisine. Even the music has a new feel with the playlist being compiled by DJ Rene ‘The Frenchman’. This simple palette of charcoal & warm honey tones is richly offset with a selection of contemporary art drawn from plants, fruit and nature. Stunningly bold modern photographic work by Marc Stanes adds a softer feminine touch, yet remains boldly contemporary. Two canvasses by Judy Bumstead of plants on a Melkbos sand dune in rich burnt orange tones counter balances the modern photographic work and minimal feel of tables and chairs. A beautiful classic oil still life of figs in a bowl by Basil Friedlander contrasts and compliments the modern art and interior. The strong, bold lines and palette are wonderfully juxtaposed with generous bowls of rich purple flowers, which creates a romantic drama to the overall mood of the room.” The Fern Bar in the Hohenort building has also been given a new look to compliment Greenhouse. Comfortable sofas and banquettes make for a sociable gathering perfect place to have pre-dinner drinks or nightcap. The food by Peter Tempelhoff remains fun and edgy, yet recognizable. “Combining innovation without losing classical cooking fundamentals and combinations is our goal - as always’ says Peter Tempelhoff. Guests can expect an exploration of local ingredients, flavours and African food fables, Greenhouse stretches the boundaries of traditional South African cuisine, bringing conceptual creations from the garden, veld and sea to the plate as well as sharing local stories and culinary insights through the dining experience. Expect the unexpected...

Dishes include ‘4 degrees of cheese’; a dichotomy of South Africa’s most awarded indigenous cheese, Huguenot from Dalewood. This dish explores its diverse flavor profile through a range of temperatures from freezing & cold to room temperature & hot. An experience for all the senses. “Focus of the menu is Africa as always with a nod to my time spent in Japan” adds Peter. A highlight on the menu is an African Single Origin Coffee tasting. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and is the only country that celebrates coffee with a ceremony, Greenhouse pays homage to this region plus Rwanda, where civil war has decimated the area and coffee has been the community’s salvation. These two amazing coffees are served as single espressos and are served with traditional accompaniments to finish off the Greenhouse experience. “I absolutely love the new space we have created and feel that the food and décor work in complete harmony together giving our guests a totally modern, relaxed and unique dining experience” concludes Peter.

WE’VE BEEN TO American Express ® Platinum Fine Dining Awards Programme reaches new heights The number and diversity of new restaurants entering the programme has significantly increased over recent years. At American Express® they strive for consistency, excellence and relevance in everything done. The annual American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards Programme, now in its 17th year, is the epicurean expression of this corporate philosophy. Convenor of the American Express culinary judging panel, Tamsin Snyman, explains that the awards ‘recognise the enormous artistic, social and business contribution that our finest chefs and restaurants make to South African life. The hospitality industry plays a key role in our economy and our collective emotional wellbeing. It is a pleasure and a privilege to be part of something that recognises this role.’ The programme’s rigorous judging methodology reflects the serious nature of the task at hand. Restaurant standards are annually reevaluated by the judges and their panel of experienced ghost reviewers. Awards are not renewed automatically and consistent quality is a must. Fellow judge Anna Trapido observes that ‘it is no good just rubber-stamping restaurants year after year or flattering chefs. We would never do that. American Express Card members seek to spend hard-earned money on quality experiences, which is why strict, educated, annual assessments are essential.’ Tamsin says that the panel is ‘particularly proud that we are at the forefront of redefining notions of fine dining in a modern, international context. For many years’ fine dining meant silver service and French food, but excellence can - and indeed does - exist across a wide spectrum of styles, ethnicities and ambiences. South Africa is a multicultural and dynamic country. Our food industry professionals are well travelled and internationally relevant, but also rooted in a national and regional culinary identity. The good news is that our best restaurants reflect this diversity, sense of place and modernity. They reveal so much about who we are and where we are going as a nation.’ Two delicious demonstrations of who we are and where we are going took place at the Jubilee Hall at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on 7 September and Katy’s Palace Bar in Johannesburg on 14 September as American Express revealed the Platinum Fine Dining Programme results for 2016. This year 100 restaurants were honoured for consistent, superb standards. Eight of these also received the prestigious 10-year award. Four restaurants were reinstated on the programme after having failed to meet the required standard in 2015. The American Express judging panel is increasingly committed to seeking out previously unknown gastronomic gems - as is evidenced by the fact that the number of new restaurants entering the programme has more than doubled since last year. ‘We are delighted to see that our iconic chefs are being joined by an exciting cadre of young chefs rising through the ranks,’ said Pamela White, Head of Corporate Card for American Express. ‘As the exclusive issuer and merchant acquirer of American Express Cards in South Africa, the Nedbank Make Things Happen ethos is demonstrated daily in our country’s kitchens and on our restaurant plates. Discerning American Express clients expect distinctive client experiences. They recognise the skill and class inherent in fine dining, and value its creativity and care. The chefs and restaurateurs recognised in our programme have shown innovation, expertise and tireless dedication to their industry. Every day they reflect local needs and global trends. That is what our brand is all about.’ Nedbank is the exclusive issuer and merchant acquirer of American Express-branded cards in South Africa, delivering a choice of distinctive client experiences and channels.

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND INVERDOORN

The

SHARK WHISPERER

with Supreme Sharks

On a trip with Supreme Sharks, a shark cage diving company working from Kleinbaai, clients have the unique opportunity to meet the free diving shark expert Andre Hartman on the trip or at the clubhouse. Andre is one of South Africa’s few self-taught shark experts and is respected as such throughout the world. He was one of the first to take the ‘cage’ out of shark cage diving and his pioneering work with the Great White attracted numerous film crews to Kleinbaai, the shark capital of the world. He has featured in many documentaries for Discovery, CNN and National Geographic to name but a few. Andre got the name shark whisperer when he accidentally discovered that touching the tip of its snout would cause a shark to lung up and back in a trance-like manner for a few seconds. After his 2nd stroke he struggles to walk but is getting stronger every day and dreams of going back into the water with these fierce creatures. He now shares his knowledge of the Great White and multitude of stories with the crew and our passengers. “I’m just mesmerized by how they move and what they do, and that fascinates me. They’re like an airplane - they fly in the water. Those wings flex with the weight of the body.” Andre Hartman, African Voices, CNN 24 December 2014

Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination. The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Boulders Visitor Centre: +27(0) 21 786 2329. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has reintroduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they

do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/ December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old.

Est. 1999

They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. Drumbeat Charters from Hout Bay Harbour cruise to Duiker Island between 4-6 time a day and you can get there by using MyCiti bus or the City Sightseeing red, double decker busses of the mini peninsula tour. Reservation is no necessary but if you’d like to check the option off a private cruise or more details see: www.drumbeatcharters.co.za or call 021 - 791 4441 GREAT WHITE SHARK

For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ART IN THE GARDEN AT KIRSTENBOSCH NBG Extinction! Dinosaurs, and Cycads? is a new exhibition in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research. The exhibition will run until June 2017. Visit www.sanbi.org for more information.
