Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block... the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he’s in desperate need of inspiration. That is until he finds his muse - Viola. The fifteen-year-old narrator of the story, Christopher John Francis Boone, discovers the slain body of his neighbour’s poodle, Wellington, on the neighbour’s front lawn one evening and sets out to uncover the murderer. His investigation is at times aided, and at other times hampered, by the mild form of autism he lives with. After Christopher hits a policeman in a misunderstanding at the scene of the crime, the police take Christopher into custody. They release Christopher with only a stern warning, under the condition that he promises to them and to his father not to look into the murder any further. Christopher chronicles his investigation in a book- the book we are reading- as part of a school assignment. Ignoring repeated warnings from his father, Christopher investigates the crime scene and conducts interviews with the residents of his block. He uncovers a more tangled plot than was first apparent.

good prevails Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) revives Veronica Paeper’s Cinderella incorporating digital design and new choreographic elements. Following the groundbreaking Mozart and Salieri, Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) will next present Cinderella at the Artscape Opera House from 5 to 21 October. The production, accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic at select performances, will incorporate new digital elements by design luminary Peter Cazalet who returns to once again work alongside Veronica Paeper, a creative coup by Acting Executive Director Tracy Li. Paeper, who will also direct this production, first choreographed Cinderella for CAPAB Ballet in 1975 and, like Cazalet, will re-work aspects of the charming, feel-good classic that has enchanted dance audiences around the world for decades. In a move that is sure to delight Cape Townian balletomanes. Paeper has cast former CAPAB and CTCB ballerina Janet Lindup into the deliciously over-the-top role of the Ugly Sister Daffodil opposite Johnny Bovang and Mervyn Williams as Violet. Both Ugly Sister roles are typically taken by males and there’s no doubt Lindup’s sense of humor will be a delightful addition to the stellar CTCB lineup.
The season runs at the Artscape Opera House with performances on Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm and Sundays at 3:00pm.
International guest artist Maxime Quiroga will return from France to dance the role of Prince Charming opposite Senior Principal Ballerina Laura Bosenberg. Quiroga, seen most recently in the title role in Marc Goldberg’s Mozart and Salieri, will alternate with Daniel Szybkowski and Conrad Nusser while the role of Cinderella will be shared between Bosenberg, Kirstel Paterson and Mariette Opperman.
Tickets cost from R120 to R350. A special performance aid of CTCB’s Outreach and Development programme takes place on Friday 19 October at 16:00 with tickets at R100 each.
The Fairy Godmother will be danced by Caitlin Smith, Leane Theunissen, Claire Spector and Hannah Ward. Buttons will be performed by Tusile Tenza, Craig Pedro and Stephen Underwood, all three of whom, together with Jordan Roelfze, will also share the role of the Jester. Craig Pedro and Stephen Underwood will be seen as the Dancing Master. Cinderella is presented in three acts and set to Prokofiev’s stirring score, with Brandon Phillips conducting Cape Town Philharmonic at certain performances.

a dream come true
Glen Carlou There can’t be any exceptions- when travelling to Cape Town a wine tour is a must! If not for the love of wine than for the scenery, the cultural, luxurious experience and the sheer beauty of our Winelands. But then you face the Designated Driver conundrum. Who is it going to be? No way! Why me? We are happy to inform you that this problem is no longer everlasting. With two key players in our tourism industry joining forces, a day of pure enjoyment is on the cards. The red buses of City Sightseeing will pick you up safely and reliably from various points along the Atlantic Seaboard and get you to and back from the Franschhoek Wine Tram 3 times a week. Depart from Cape Town in a luxury air-conditioned coach and head directly to the Franschhoek Valley to hop off at the Franschhoek Wine Tram for a day of wine tasting and beautiful sights. The City Sightseeing double deck buses are equipped with free WiFi and power docking stations. The Franschhoek Wine Tram offers two hop-on, hop-off lines, the Purple & the Orange, each visiting nine wine estates in the Franschhoek Valley using a combination of the tram and tram-buses. The tram or tram-buses pass each wine estate once an hour, so you can explore at your convenience, enjoy a leisurely lunch or move from one estate to the next. It is well advised, especially during the high season, to pre-book lunch or a picnic basket at your preferred estate. You should also bear in mind that if you plan to fully enjoy the day without rushing and stressing, you will probably get to visit about 3-4 estates. Plan your day ahead, pay attention to the time tables and while at it, plan your second visit. You will want to. Wine farms included in the Franschhoek Wine Tram route:
ALLÉE BLEUE Wine and olive oil in the tasting room, a bistro and some of the best picnic baskets our winelands has to offer. The estate is known for its’ farming and provides fresh herbs to the best local supermarkets. We mention that in order to boost your imagination and day dream about the flavours that they serve. BOSCHENDAL A tasting room, a farm to table restaurant that sources from both the gardens and their fruit orchards, picnic options and again- the gardens- a splendid example of thoughtfully landscaped local flora and fauna.

You will come across the Family Reserved, the Black Label, a Premium Range that includes a special Late Harvest, Brandies, a Fortified range of Port-like wines and a kosher range.
Plaisir de Merle
The restaurant is a home style eatery serving fresh seasonal cooking and with the moderated weather through the year you will be most likely seated in the garden - the yard that any city resident dreams off. CELEBRATING A BENCHMARK Two of Tsogo Sun’s iconic Cape Town hotels – Southern Sun The Cullinan and Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town celebrated two decades of excellence this year in September, with events, special offers, commemorative food and beverage experiences and visits down memory lane. Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town opened as Holiday Inn Waterfront Cape Town in July 1998, and The Cullinan opened a few months later that year. John van Rooyen, Tsogo Sun Operations Director – Cape Region, says, “We’re celebrating both birthdays in September as it falls between the hotels’ actual opening months, but more importantly, it is Tourism month, and our hotels have always been an integral part of the city’s excellent tourism offering.” Tsogo Sun’s contributions to the local tourism industry include partnerships with major cycle tours, marathons, and cultural events such as the Cape Town Carnival, Cape Town Cycle Tour and Two Oceans Marathon. Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town has 537 rooms and Southern Sun The Cullinan, 394 rooms, representing a 14

significant proportion of Tsogo Sun’s total 2,000 rooms across its six hotels in Cape Town’s city centre, including the Southern Sun Cape Sun, SunSquare and StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl and SunSquare Cape Town Gardens. Both hotels boast magnificent views of Table Mountain and the harbour and have always provided a wide range of world-class amenities and facilities to meet the needs of business and leisure travellers, local and international, ensuring them a home away from home. Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town was newly built in 1998, while The Cullinan, named after the largest diamond ever found, was originally opened in 1998 and then acquired by Southern Sun from Liberty Group Limited in 1999 and relaunched as Southern Sun The Cullinan. Both hotels have undergone significant refurbishments over the years as part of Tsogo Sun’s philosophy of continuing investment in all its properties. Says Ravi Nadasen, Tsogo Sun’s COO of hotels, “The group has always maintained a vested interest in our hotels and is
committed to ensuring that they remain relevant, fresh and internationally competitive. The aesthetic appeal and the offerings at our hotels are key to our efforts to consistently deliver great experiences for our guests.” Food and beverage at both hotels has also always been of an exceptional standard. The original restaurant at Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town was a MacRib Family Restaurant and at Southern Sun The Cullinan, it was Kelseys Grill & Fish. Today the offerings have evolved to include Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town’s elegant Yizani restaurant, which has a menu to suit contemporary trends and tastes, featuring South African and international cuisine, and the Peach Tree Restaurant at Southern Sun The Cullinan, which offers an interactive dinner buffet with emphasis on Cape Malay fusion dishes. Both hotels’ restaurants also now serve a spectacular Sunday lunch which is a favourite for family and other special celebrations. Southern Sun Waterfront’s Pool Bar will also be offering a gin and sushi pairing experience every Wednesday from 5pm – 7pm, while Southern Sun The Cullinan’s Stella Café & Bar, which serves drinks and dishes from a tapas menu around the magnificent pool will be launching their Stella Sessions open wine concept every Friday from 5pm – 7pm. Through the decades, the hotels have been proud hosts of global sports stars, celebrities, musicians, business leaders, politicians, and even royalty, including the king and queen of Greece, King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie, UB40, Watershed, Prime Circle, Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther and Avengers fame, Idris Alba, The Script, and local leading lights such as Winnie Mandela, Mi Casa, Loyiso Bala, Johnny Clegg, and many others – many of whom are regular guests. The hotels’ evolving history has also seen them develop strong partnerships with leading South African sports groups, which include, amongst others, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka World Tour cycling team and SA Rugby – with the national Springbok team and SA Rugby hosted at Southern Sun The Cullinan, and the Sevens, Women’s, and Junior Springbok teams staying at Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town. Says van Rooyen, “The hotels are extremely proud of their ties to leading South African sports teams and always pull out all the stops to ensure their stays with us are excellent, which includes developing special menus and dishes according to their requirements.” Van Rooyen says, “Twenty years might be just a blip in the city’s overall history – but it is well worth celebrating, by looking back over our successes and achievements, our triumphs through tough times, and recommitting ourselves to even better performance in the years to come. Our celebration month is an absolute highlight for both hotels.” Tsogo Sun has a portfolio of over 100 hotels and 13 casino and entertainment destinations throughout South Africa, Africa and the Seychelles. #pizza4good Because Col’Cacchio is aiming to sell 60 000 pizzas in 3 months, from September to end of November 2018, to raise R1 000 000 for an ER at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, the only one in Africa. How can you help? Three South African celebrities joined the sub-Sharan food chain and created their own take to this all-time favorite. Our experience was full all flavors, tastefully rich and generous with the toppings. It is a win-win situation in which you get pizza like never before and all proceedings go towards benefiting children in an organization with proven record. The Red Cross Hospital takes care of around 250 000 patients each year, with a third of these patients younger than one years old.
Jack Parow: ‘Wors Tokolosh’
They also do high level medical training of medical professionals in South Africa and globally and their ground-breaking research into childhood illnesses has global influence. Internationally acclaimed Chef Siba Mtongana, an award winning gastronome, TV star, South African food specialist and mom of 4, created ‘Sibalicious’ - a flavorful sticky chicken gem. Jack Parow, an iconic Afrikaans hip hop artists brings to the table all his zest and charm. His ‘Wors Tokolosh’ is a meaty, braai inspired pizza. It is the South African barbeque innovation like you never seen it before.
Siba Mtongana: ‘The Sibalicious’
The Instagram and YouTube vlog phenomena, Nadia Jaftha, which shares life interactions and family relationships interpreted one of her moms’ recipe to fit a pizza base. ‘Jou Ma Sala’ is a spicy (hot) chicken Masala infused pizza. You might think we are exaggerating but check the numbers, we are totally understate and the taste explodes in your mouth in the same way she crosses any screen. And there are also prizes to be won- an all expanses paid, trip for 2 to Italy and bi-weekly cash prizes. In order to get your chance with these you have to do your deed first. All details will be available on your table at the restaurant.

life is a picnic
Either for a romantic or a practical decision to suit a diverse party of people, choosing the picnic option while exploring the Cape Winelands can often provide you with a delightful culinary experience and a memorable day. Our past engagement in that activity proved that the wine estates don’t take this menu offer lightly in any way. Effort, creativity, presentation and well attended location are all taken into consideration. It’s actually a perfect example to the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Picnic grounds for a start, reflects the history, environmental ethos, landscaping traditions, respect to the neighbouring ecosystems of the estate and the desire to create a welcoming site that will make you feel spoiled for choice. With the same attention, the picnic basket content is a purification of the estates produce for both the wine and the culinary offerings. It is inevitable that you will be offered to pick a wine to suit the season and the food, to brighten your day and leave you light headed and content. The dishes and goods offer the same approach. When enjoying the estates’ chef’s culinary creation in small bundles of joy he doesn’t have the luxury to impress with beautiful plating, so it comes down to flavors. Lucky for us, we got to have some of the most appetizing dishes coming out of a freshly assembled jar. We have a few examples for you with what is coming for the 2018/19 season:
Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, Franschhoek Sourced out of their award winning French restaurant, their picnic basket gets reinvented each summer. The Grande Country Picnic baskets include free range chicken, estate made hummus, local cheeses and preserves, heirloom garden salad, smoked snoek pâté, olives, charcuterie and crusty farm baked bread. The decadent rocky road Valrhona chocolate bar will satisfy any sweet tooth. The picnic basket comes with a bottle of Grande Provence’s popular Angels Tears wine of your choice as well as still or sparkling water. Vegetarian baskets are available on request. The Grande Country Picnic is available at R650 for two people sharing or R325 for a single basket. To book, call The Restaurant at Grande Provence a day in advance on Tel: (021) 876 8600 or email restaurant@ grandeprovence.co.za. You are sure to see the cool elegant arum lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) and tall spikes of watsonias in the garden. To see the amazing variety and the beautiful shapes and colours of the Cape bulbs, including Moraea, Babiana, Sparaxis and Lachenalia, visit the Kay Bergh Bulb House in the Botanical Society Conservatory, where they are on display, safe from the ever hungry porcupines.

recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.
AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great
White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!
CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance
• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined
big 5 safaris
Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari? A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:
AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Aquila’s four-star cottages are built largely from rock, thatch and wood to blend with the environment and offer every comfort like roaring log fires, wooden viewing decks, air conditioning, crisp percale linen, rock bathrooms and, in some, alfresco rock showers. Aquila’s afro-chic Aquila Lodge comprises of 3 levels, accessible by a glass panelled lift with magnificent Karoo vistas. The Lodge offers both standard and premier lodge room. Aquila has an outdoor swimming pool, a pool bar, a cigar lounge and a large dining room where the chef presents a rich variety of authentic South African cuisine. Aquila newly opened African spa featuring; 2 large heated indoor pools, steam room, sauna, nail bar, 10 treatment rooms, a couples or group treatment room and an outdoor pool.
INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
SAFARI
Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
