OVERNIGHT TRAILS

IN TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK The Cape of Good Hope Trail and Hoerikwaggo Trail are two overnight, long hiking trails that start in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and are only recommended for people with moderate levels of fitness. While they are not particularly technical, the distances covered are significant, and hikers must be prepared to cover up to 15 kilometres per day.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE TRAIL A two-day, one-night trail that follows a circular route through the reserve. The trail begins and ends at the Cape Point entrance, where there is secure parking available for your vehicle. The trail takes hikers through some of the most pristine wilderness of the reserve, cutting through vast plains of fynbos and over isolated beaches, populated only by the occasional ostrich or baboon. Wildlife, though skittish, is often seen on the route, and dynamic plant and birdlife abound. 10

l Hello Cape Town October 2017

The route is straightforward but covers an impressive 33.8 kilometres. As such, you’ll need to be reasonably fit and well-equipped in order to get maximum enjoyment out of the trail. The trail stops off at the beautiful Rooikrans cottages, where cutlery and crockery are provided. Wood for the braai facilities can be pre-ordered at the entrance gate and delivered to the cottage by the time of your arrival. There is also a two-plate gas stove, solar powered lighting and showers in the huts. You must bring your own bedding, however. Bookings are essential, and must be done via the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre on 021 780 9204 during office hours. The current price is R210 per person, which does not include entrance fees into the Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve. Please familiarise yourself with the Cape of Good Hope Hiking Trail rules before embarking on the trip. THE HOERIKWAGGO TRAIL The Hoerikwaggo Trail is one of the Cape’s hidden hiking gems. This legendary five day, four night hiking trail leads participants through the heart of the Table Mountain National Park, starting at the southern tip of the peninsula, and ending up just metres from the fringe of the Cape Town CBD. The trail is named after the Khoisan word for Table Mountain, “the mountain in the sea”, and in many respects it pays homage to the nomadic people that roamed the vast plains and dramatic mountainsides for many hundreds of years. As you wind your way through the spectacular scenery, it’s hard to believe that busy highways and a bustling city are, at times, just a few kilometres away. Apart from the occasional human encounter, much of the trail is in total solitude and isolation, and you will leave with a new appreciation for the vastness of the national park on our doorstep.

All campsites are immaculately appointed and offer beautiful surroundings in which to relax after the day’s long walk. They provide accommodation for up to 12 people, and you are required to provide their own bedding and towels. There are full cooking facilities at each site, including braai places, however all accommodation is selfcatering, and hikers must make plans to transport their own firelighters and matches – wood is available for purchase at the campsites. Each day brings with it unique sights and scenery, and for a full breakdown of distances and routes, visit the Hoerikwaggo page on the SANParks website. There is no charge for the hike itself, however entrance to Cape Point must be paid, and all accommodation must be booked with SANParks prior to departure. This can be done directly with the Hoerikwaggo Trail Bookings Office on 021 712 7471, or via the check availability tool on the SANParks website. It’s important to remember that the route is linear, and you will need to arrange for your own shuttle system between the starting (Cape Point Nature Reserve) and finishing (Platteklip Washhouses) points. There is secure parking located at both ends of the trail, however this must be pre-arranged and is at the owner’s risk. The trail is a spectacular one, and to complete it from start to finish is a true once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment. There’s a lot to know about the ins and outs of each day’s route and facilities, so we recommend taking a careful read through the SANParks website, and contacting the reservation centre on 021 712 7471 or hoerikwaggobookings@ sanparks.org with any queries.

The trail starts off in the tranquil wilderness of Cape Point, and makes its way north through four tented campsites: Smitswinkel, Silvermine, Slangkop, and Orangekloof, en-route to the Cape Town CBD. You’ll explore two sides of the peninsula, traverse vast ridges and encounter an array of plant, animal, bird and marine life. Tel: 021 712 0527 South African National Parks

A ROYAL TREAT There is a lot to be said about the changes in hospitality over the decades, the way design, timing and service transformed and shifted, but here in Cape Town we are also lucky to keep the old, colonial tradition of High Tea across the finest hotels in the city. This allows both, running around visitors and busy business travelers to complete the hectic day in a relaxed note and to soak in the last couple of hours of the day while enjoying our magnificent surrounds and the most decadent pastime. Most establishments provide this serving on a daily basis. Designated, in-house Chefs of Patisserie creates the most delicious and beautiful savory and sweet creations. They would serve it alongside traditional teas or accompany it with a fine bubbly, all to your liking. Alongside maintaining constant key menus, there will be different variations throughout the season and even in a course of the week. All in order to keep the daily serving matching with the freshest ingredients and the creativity of the different chefs. Although being a daily affair, we highly recommend pre booking, especially during high season. 12 APOSTLES HOTEL You can choose between a ‘Tea by The Sea’ 2 hours standard service or the High Tea daily buffet service. CAPE GRACE HOTEL Served at the hotels’ cosy library, this daily treat keeps bringing visitors back, time after time and is proudly maintained to level with the top Afternoon Tea services around the world. LA PRADA IN CONSTANTIA NEK Overlooking the magnificent Constantia Valley and the Cape Flats, than framed by the Stellenburg Mountains and the ocean, gets you the perfect setting to absorb both natural and men designed beauty. High tea is offered Monday – Saturday and must be pre booked. MOUNT NELSON HOTEL In this long standing establishment you would literally sit where royals sat before. The colonial flair presents itself in the structure and in the service. They serve morning, afternoon and evening tea and over the years developed their own unique blend. ONE & ONLY RESORT Situated at the Vista Bar & Lounge and overlooking our iconic Table Mountain, they serve daily afternoon tea and ads a serving of morning tea over the weekends.

summertime

THE GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA / KIRSTENBOSCH There is no better season to meet and mingle with Capetonians. Right after planning your sightseeing, booking and scheduling your stay, all that is left to do is to come and join us in what we love to combine most: a stunning outdoor venue, friends & family, good entertainment, a local bottle of wine or craft beer, a tasty treat to compliment and the sense of luck because we are able to enjoy it all. Whether it’s a concert, a movie under the stars or a ballet, our most valuable advice is to book in advance. These gatherings are so popular among locals that getting your tickets early will be a decision you won’t regret. All the events we mention offer online ticket purchasing and all that is left to do is to replace your digital confirmation with a ticket at the door. KIRSTENBOSCH SUMMER SUNSET CONCERTS Every Sunday afternoon, from mid-November to the beginning of April, the open amphitheater in our National Botanical Garden becomes a haven for lovers of music of all genres. The lineup offers the best South African bands, icons of African music, some international acts, Christmas Carols in mid-December and the ever popular, every year sold out concert of The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. THE GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA Between end October and end of April, Tuesday to Saturday, you can watch a classical movie under the stars screened in rotating popular venues around the city or at a wine estate. Although you can bring your own refreshments, the organisers also offer a folding seat, a blanket, along with various food and beverage stalls. During the school summer holiday, there are also screenings of children’s movies on Sunday afternoons. THE CAPE TOWN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA In addition to the Kirstenbosch concert, the CPO performs at Nederburg Wine Estate every New Years’ eve, at the Green Point Athletic Stadium in the second half of December and the Starlight Concert at one of the winelands best known wine estates in March. Ticket sales for these concerts start early and are usually sold out weeks before the events. MAYNARDVILLE OPEN-AIR THEATRE Between mid-January and end of February, the venue offers productions of well-known Shakespearean plays and popular ballets performed by Cape Town City Ballet. OUDE LIBERTAS This wine estate, located on the outskirts of Stellenbosch includes a Saturday Slow-Market, a gallery and an amphitheater. Between mid-November and mid-March, a concert is on offer a few times a week. The programme consists of both English and Afrikaans offers, contemporary, folk, cultural and classical music. AFRIKAANSE TAAL MONUMENT Situated on a hill, high above Paarl and committed to its’ duty to preserve the Afrikaans language, they present a series of concerts performed by known singers and bands on weekends. The special location of the monument, far enough from the big city and high above the Paarl valley is also being used for stargazing picnics. Supported by the Orion Observation Group, you will have a chance to watch, learn and explore the southern night sky. SUNDAY CONCERTS AT WINE ESTATES A few wine estates across our winelands offer shorter summer programmes, usually one weekend a month. You will be able to get information about these events on our pages later in the season. Traditionally, each wine estate will offer a picnic basket to be ordered with the ticket. It will include fresh treats being prepared by the estate’s own restaurant and one of their wines.

TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the

bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you

instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30. Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00,

11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagonmakers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. IDLADLA

Renowned ceramist artist Andile Dyalvane’s solo exhibition ‘ Idladla’ is currently available to view at Southern Guild at the newly launched Silo District at the V & A Waterfront. Dyalvane’s exhibition comprises of multiple sculptural pieces placed onto plinths comprised of bricks. The body of work provides spectators with an unprecedented view into the Artist’s exploration of scope, scale, traditional colour palettes and textures. Dyalvane’s work visibly draws inspiration from his Xhosa heritage and his contemporary urban life- an element in his work which brings his new solo body of work to the forefront of the International Design Market. The terracotta body of work reflects a strong architectural influence inspired by Dyalvane’s travels to New York City recently when the Artist presented a solo body of work at Friedman Benda in 2016, new experiences within the NY City Centre undoubtedly drew parallels between his hometown in Ngobozana Village in the Eastern Cape and the busy Westernized city districts he found himself immersed into- an element clearly evident in the Artist’s creative processing of ‘Idladla’ - visibly marked by precise incisions and mark making, hand imprints and motifs. Andile is the recipient of numerous awards including a recent Southern Guild Design Foundation Icon Award in recognition of outstanding achievement and innovation. The Artist states that the Guild group has given him guidance over the past 9 years when the creative relationship initiated- providing him with sound advice from leading Design experts in South Africa- also providing his Salt River based ceramics studio ‘ Imiso’ with means to expand and bringing ceramic sculpture to the forefront of the International Design market. Regarded as a highly successful export, Dyalvane’s impressive pieces can also be found in many prestigious local and international public and private collections and is represented by the Guild group at leading International Design fairs. Andile Dyalvane’s solo exhibition ‘Idladla’ is available to view at the newly developed Silo District untill 11 October 2017. recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.

AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great

White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!

CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined

The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

SAFARI

Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
