Friendships and relationships have changed. His friends are getting married and going to Stodels on the weekend while he’s figuring out that Tinder is not that beneficial when you’re staying at home with your parents. This 10 000 Ha, 5-star lodge is located two and a half hours’ drive from Cape Town, as you pass Worcester on the N2 and drive into the Karoo desert. From its humble beginnings as old farm houses, it was transformed into a beautiful guest house. The lodge grew to be a haven of comfort and luxury nestled deep in the desert. All rooms and buildings are surrounded by a beautiful, indigenous succulent garden, making sure that no matter the season or water conditions, the sustainable design is there to stay and welcome visitors. In addition to the Big Five Safari, you can expect to interact one on one with cheetahs, to see hippos, zebras, giraffes, red lechwe, various antelope species, their cousin the wildebeest, Africa’s largest antelope, the eland and the nation’s pride, the springbok.

l Hello Cape Town September 2017

A short walk from the lodge will get you to the ostrich zone. On overnight safaris, you will be treated not just once but twice, at both sunrise and sunset. Since the animals are much livelier at these times, you will witness the cheetah’s magnificent training runs, so it is well worth the stay. On beautiful days lunch is served outside under old Eucalyptuses, allowing you to enjoy a subtle breeze and interact with fellow guests. All meals are based on local South African cuisine, served generously and full of flavour. Special dietary requirements can be met by prior arrangement. The lodge also offers WIFI as well as two pools to keep everybody entertained and relaxed throughout their stay. +27 (0)214 220 013 / info@inverdoorn.com / www.inverdoorn.com

hiking table mountain ONE DAY WALKS South African National Parks

With Spring kicking in, the great outdoors give us a big call to come and explore. Table Mountain National Park is the only one in the world surrounded by a city, which gives us a huge number of access points and limitless opportunities to choose from. In addition to the seasons’ moderated weather, it is also the perfect timing to enjoy our unique indigenous flora, mainly the internationally known, our national flower, the Protea. South African National Parks (SANParks) marks 5 main routes along the park which can be experienced one short walk at a time or taken as daily and over-night tracks with existing accommodation camps in few points. Booking must be done. Although there are rangers along the paths, hiring a guide, especially if you are a visitor, is highly recommended. THE 5 MOST POPULAR HIKING ROUTES: Use one of the recommended routes to enjoy the wonders the park has to offer. Please be aware that more people die on Table Mountain than Mount Everest. Table Mountain is a mountain, not a hill! Please respect and enjoy our mountain.

LION’S HEAD Walk offers a great view at every turn. The easy spiral walk starts on Signal Hill Drive, below Lion’s Head. The view from its 669m summit offers a breathtaking 360-degree sweep taking in the city bowl; Devil’s Peak and the famous front face of Table Mountain; the majestic Twelve Apostles; the stunning scenery of the Atlantic seaboard from Oudekraal through Bakoven, Camps Bay and Clifton to Sea Point and Green Point; Table Bay, and of course, Robben Island. The short and relatively easy walk to the top of Lion’s Head is necessary for those wanting to enjoy the very best that the Park has to offer. WARNING: It is a Cape Town tradition to hike to the summit of Lion’s Head to toast the full moon as it rises over the distant Hottentots Holland mountains to the east. On these festive occasions, the summit can be very busy. If you decide to join in the fun, please remember alcohol, 10

darkness and the initial steep descent can be a very dangerous combination. Distance: about 2km one-way Time: 1hr - 1hr 30mins up Rating: easy with some minor rock scrambling Children: yes but may require help at the chains Dogs: Are not recommended. Water: none available along this route

THE PIPE TRACK WALK This walk starts at the junction of Tafelberg Road and Kloof Nek. The Pipe Track is precisely what it says: a path constructed to service a pipeline running below the series of peaks known as the Twelve Apostles. This pipeline was built to carry water from Disa Gorge in Table Mountain’s Back Table, via the Woodhead Tunnel through the mountain in Slangolie Ravine, to the Molteno Reservoir in Oranjezicht to help slake the thirst of the booming, late 19th century Cape Town. In several places the path is very stony, but it is an easily accessible and popular walk, with many locals making regular use of certain sections; it is part of the Atlantic seaboard way of life. WARNING: The Pipe Track is very exposed to the hot afternoon sun in summer; it is at its best early on summer mornings. Distance: about 6km one-way to Corridor Ravine Time: 4hrs - 4hr30mins return Rating: easy to Slangolie, moderate to Corridor Children: yes, but the full route is tough Dogs: yes Water: tap at the start; take lots in summer PLATTEKLIP GORGE Platteklip to Upper Cableway Station The “highway” to the top. Up - relentlessly up! That’s the only way to describe the path in Platteklip Gorge. It’s the most direct route to the

top of the mountain and the most popular. However, it is not a route to be trifled with; the going can be tough. The walk starts on Tafelberg Road and ascends the main gorge that divides the front face (Africa face) of Table Mountain. The path is well constructed with stone steps and anti-erosion gabions, and is not difficult to negotiate at any point. However, it is steep, and the best way to tackle Platteklip is slowly - don’t try to rush it, and frequent stops will give you a chance to look back at the great view of Cape Town and Table Bay below. Allow sufficient time for walking down, even if your plan is to come down with the cableway. Rapid changes in weather conditions often cause the cableway to shut down unexpectedly, leaving hikers stranded in darkness at the upper cable station. WARNING: Don’t underestimate Platteklip Gorge, which can be extremely hot and/or very cold and windy. The temperature at the top can be much lower than on Tafelberg Road, with an icy wind blowing, even in January and February. Always take enough water, a hat, sun block and warm, windproof clothing with you - even on hot summer days! REMEMBER to get your one-way down ticket for the Cable Car at the bottom. There is no way to get a ticket once you reach the top. Distance: about 3km up! Time: between 1hr for the super fit to 3hrs for the slow Rating: moderate to tough, depending on fitness and weather Children: older children yes, but it is demanding Dogs: not recommended, and not on the cableway Water: always take plenty of your own, especially in summer

UPPER CABLEWAY STATION To Maclear’s Beacon Walk This walk is a must if you want to be able to say you’ve stood at the highest point on Table Mountain, even if at 1 088m it is only 21m above the Upper Cableway Station. From the Upper Cableway Station, choose the main path leading to the diagonally opposite corner of what is known as the Western Table – look for plaques as guide marks to make sure you’re on the right track. It will take you 10 to 15 minutes to walk across to the point where chains and poles have been provided to assist the short climb down the rocky steps at the edge: it is not difficult. Do not attempt to climb down at any other point! The path to Maclear’s Beacon is marked by painted yellow footprints. WARNING: Do not attempt this walk if there is low cloud or mist on the mountain. It is very easy to become disoriented and to lose your way. Distance: 5.5km overall Time: 45mins to an hour one-way to Maclear’s Beacon

Rating: easy Children: yes Dogs: not recommended Water: none available along this route

SKELETON GORGE To Maclear’s Beacon: The Smuts Track The Smuts Track is one of the most popular walks on Table Mountain, and especially in summer when the Afromontane forest offers shade almost all the way up skeleton Gorge, the toughest section. The climb is steep and unrelenting, although not difficult or requiring more than an ability to climb a wooden ladder and negotiate a few rocky steps. However, many people underestimate the effort required, particularly when they go all the way to Maclear’s Beacon. Be prepared; don’t make the same mistake. The walk starts in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, but the heart of this route begins at the intersection of Skeleton Gorge and the Contour Path. The first 40 to 75 minutes is spent in the forest climbing log and stone steps. About two-thirds of the way up a series of wooden ladders eases the way over steep rocks, which can be slippery when, wet. WARNING: Parts of Skeleton Gorge are slippery, even in summer; take special care after rain and in winter. Avoid this route during and immediately after heavy rain. Distance: +/-4km Time: from 2hrs for the super-fit to 4hrs for the less-than-fit (one-way) Rating: moderate, no shade in the second half Children: yes Dogs: not recommended Water: mountain streams usually flow, but it’s best to take your own The Table Mountain National Park is a World Heritage Site, and an ecologically sensitive area with plants and animals that occur nowhere else in the world - please treat it with respect and help Park’s staff conserve this globally unique and much-loved environment. • Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints. Don’t pick, break or trample any plants or flowers, or remove seeds, rocks or plants. • Don’t feed, touch or harm any of the animals or birds in the Park - dassies, baboons and even the African Penguin all have ferocious bites! • Wild fires can cause loss of life and property. Never light fires anywhere other than in designated braai (barbecue) areas. Do not throw cigarette butts anywhere. In our next issue we will share the long, overnight tracks. A NEW HEAD CHEF AT THE ONE & ONLY RAISES THE BAR Exciting and different are two words that barely begin to describe the new Spring-Summer menu at Reuben’s restaurant in the One & Only resort, Cape Town. After taking a professional detour around the Cape, Chef Jason Millar is back to collaborate with Chef Reuben Riffle to create an entirely new menu. It is a combination of sourcing top local ingredients that can be achieved only by working closely with producers over a long period of time and pouring in extensive knowledge in traditional high cuisine, diverse cooking methods and the impact they have on flavours. All of this resulted in tasty, aromatic and beautiful dishes. Designed and served as a small plates menu, it enables the opportunity to explore more than one dish of each section and soak in a variety of local flavours. Although focused on local ingredients, the menu is diverse enough to cater to different dietary requirements. Furthermore, the chefs went to extra lengths to create these versatile dishes up front so dinner will not be compromised over an improvised dish. Keep in mind that the One & Only resort offers the opportunity to enjoy a full evening experience, made possible by starting your visit at The Vista Lounge with its’ elegant setting and the unbeatable view of Table Mountain. Their new mixologist creates his own unique liquor extracts on-site and combines them with spirits from all over the globe, creating new twists to well-known cocktails.

A ROYAL TREAT There is a lot to be said about the changes in hospitality over the decades, the way design, timing and service transformed and shifted, but here in Cape Town we are also lucky to keep the old, colonial tradition of High Tea across the finest hotels in the city. This allows both, running around visitors and busy business travelers to complete the hectic day in a relaxed note and to soak in the last couple of hours of the day while enjoying our magnificent surrounds and the most decadent pastime. Most establishments provide this serving on a daily basis. Designated, in-house Chefs of Patisserie creates the most delicious and beautiful savory and sweet creations. They would serve it alongside traditional teas or accompany it with a fine bubbly, all to your liking. Alongside maintaining constant key menus, there will be different variations throughout the season and even in a course of the week. All in order to keep the daily serving matching with the freshest ingredients and the creativity of the different chefs. Although being a daily affair, we highly recommend pre booking, especially during high season. 12 APOSTLES HOTEL You can choose between a ‘Tea by The Sea’ 2 hours standard service or the High Tea daily buffet service. CAPE GRACE HOTEL Served at the hotels’ cosy library, this daily treat keeps bringing visitors back, time after time and is proudly maintained to level with the top Afternoon Tea services around the world. LA PRADA IN CONSTANTIA NEK Overlooking the magnificent Constantia Valley and the Cape Flats, than framed by the Stellenburg Mountains and the ocean, gets you the perfect setting to absorb both natural and men designed beauty. a whale of a time

They visit the shores of the Western Cape every year as spring kicks in. The town of Hermanus, located on the cliffs above Walker Bay, gives spectators uninterrupted vistas of both the interactions between mature whales and the playful encounters between their youngsters. The Hermanus Whale Festival, taking place this year from 29 September- 1 October, is the only enviroarts festival in South Africa. It celebrates seasonality and the circle of life on the water level and up on the grounds. It can be enjoyed as a long day trip from Cape Town or better yet as an overnight stay. The festival offers food experiences, a large range of crafters, sport events, kids’ entertainment, a Music stage with over 20 artists performing over the festival, Marine ECO Village and a Vintage Car show. The full programme is available on the events’ website: hermanuswhalefestival.co.za If you plan to be in Cape Town but still not certain you can make it to Hermanus in those specific dates, you can still view the magnificent creatures and although the celebrations won’t be in place locals will greet you with a smile. The local craft market is open every day and the town itself, located in the heart of the Overberg region is a comfortable base to explore wine estate that produces cool climate wines, defined more loosely as where the weather both limits grape ripening and offers the threat of serious damage to the vine in the winter. What this means is that the vine grower and winemaker have to be even savvier to produce the wonderfully elegant wines that are increasingly popular with consumers the world over. The Wine Village, one of the famous local wine shops in South Africa, located on the R320 just before you reach Hermanus, is a good and knowledgeable place to start (www.winevillage.co.za). 22

COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the

bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you

instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30. Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00,

11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagonmakers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. l Hello Cape Town September 2017

Located in the heart of Cape Town’s historic centre, on the corner of Loop and Church Streets, 99 Loop Gallery opened its’ doors just two years ago. This short span of time has seen Loop Street – once considered Bree’s ugly sister – develop into one of the creative and foodie hubs of the city. New eateries have been opening up every month, including the gallery’s own popular Solo restaurant, which provides respite from the city’s noise in its peaceful treed courtyard. Other galleries on the stretch include the African-focused Ebony and the brand new Gallery One11. 99 Loop’s classic 1800s façade conceals a warm, modern interior housing a revolving series of solo and group exhibitions of paintings, sculpture & photography. A new wing, designed by the team from Rennie Scurr Adendorff (who refurbished the Fugard Theatre in District Six), adds to the Gallery’s contemporary appeal, with over 100m2 of exhibition space. As an emerging gallery in a city with a burgeoning creative climate, 99 Loop uses its extensive double-storey space to showcase a range of up-and-coming artists from around the country, each selected for their distinctive voice. Heading into the busy summer season, 99 Loop will be showcasing a number of solo exhibitions by artists from around the country. September sees Port Elizabethbased sculptor Jonathan van der Walt (one of 2017’s Sasol New Signatures Top 100 Finalists) showing his latest collection of resin and bronze pieces. Exhibiting alongside him is Belgian-born surrealist painter Wim Legrand, the founder of the 50ty/50ty print collection. Capetonians Khaya Sineyile and Isabella Kuijers in October are followed by Gauteng natives Anastasia Pather (a finger painter) and Nina Torr, known for her finely detailed medieval inspired works. While 99 Loop might be one of the busiest spots on the city’s ever-popular First Thursdays, the rest of the month it’s a peaceful place where you can grab a cup of coffee from Solo and enjoy the endless creativity of our city has to offer. 99 Loop Street, Cape Town / 021 422 3766 / gallery@99loop.co.za / www.99loop.co.za

recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.

AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great

White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!

CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined

Aquila has an outdoor swimming pool, a pool bar, a cigar lounge and a large dining room where the chef presents a rich variety of authentic South African cuisine. Aquila newly opened African spa featuring; 2 large heated indoor pools, steam room, sauna, nail bar, 10 treatment rooms, a couples or group treatment room and an outdoor pool.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

SAFARI

Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
