Meet the new us. An Absa inspired by Africa.

When the time came to re-imagine Absa, we looked to people and the African continent for inspiration. Our new colour palette is inspired by the rich and varied colours of this continent’s earth and skies. Our new logo is inspired by our sense of community, and our infinite possibilities. Driving it all, is the way we get things done. We call this Africanacity.

Quenti Alpaca Farm & Mill in the Wellington Wine Route started its current operation on 2009 with the first 12 alpaca arriving from Chile. The current herd size is 204 with 33 due to birth in September/October. The old restored Cape Dutch homestead dates around 1715 and neighbours the only customised industrial mill dedicated to Alpaca in SA. Mill machinery has come from all over Europe, carefully reconditioned and set just right for the extremely low micron fibers. All of this results in a farm that oversees the entire process from nurturing the animals to the end products. It includes colouring the in house manufactured yarn with natural pigments and knitting products by farm residents, employees and neighbouring communities. Personal wear and homeware products are available all year round through the online store. You can find beanies, socks, ponchos, snoods and scarves, throws, baby blankets and yarn, all in delicate earth tones and natural pastels. capealpacas.co.za for the online shop. For the second year, on 29 September, visitors are welcome to the Quenti Farm Festival. It is a celebration of natural fibers and all the creativity that it generates. The owners share their fascination for the many ways people create, using very simple tools – a crochet hook, a set of knitting needles, water and friction, natural pigments……………the list goes on. There are many people doing small unique things with little exposure, so the festival is a place where their work is showcased. The festival day offers a range of workshops – crochet, felting, hand spinning and yarn blending. The oldest guild in the country will be present – Cape Guild of Weavers. They will demonstrate some of their crafts and display the work of their members. Mill tours throughout the day will show visitors the amazing machines and processes used to transform raw fiber into fabulous, sleek worsted yarn. Celebrations will be complete with live music, fabulous food, local craft beer and wine, great coffee and cakes, all in a glorious setting under a huge wild fig tree, between ancient buildings in the shadow of the Hawaqua Mountains. Wellington is just an hour’s drive from central Cape Town, but it feels as if you are a thousand miles away from civilisation. Peaceful and beautiful with an enormous number of bird species can be seen every day. If you wish to visit Quenti Alpaca Farm & Mill on other days, you are welcome to do so by appointment. They offer personalized tours of the barn and mill concluding at the studio, where products are displayed, and people can browse and shop after the tour. Hello Cape Town September 2018 l

you call it barbeque We call it Braai

On Heritage Day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. In 2005, a media campaign sought to “re-brand” the holiday as National Braai Day, in recognition of the South African culinary tradition of holding informal backyard barbecues, or braais. On 5 September 2007, Archbishop Desmond Tutu celebrated his appointment as patron of South Africa’s Braai (Barbecue) Day, affirming it to be a unifying force in a divided country (by donning an apron and tucking into a boerewors sausage). At the end of 2007 National Braai Day changed its name to Braai4Heritage and the initiative received the endorsement of South Africa’s National Heritage Council (NHC). With Cape Town’s warm, welcoming hospitality you can join locals at any of these places:

THE VILLAGE IDIOT 32 LOOP STREET This restaurant is a celebration of the South African Braai tradition all year round. Expect premium meat cuts, traditional sausages like Droëwors & Boerewors, Biltong, Pap, traditional Curries and an overall farmhouse atmosphere.

A SPECTATOR VIEW One of the blessings left for Cape Town by the 2010 World Cup is the state of the art Stadium precinct which holds a series of surprising features invisible to the occasional urban spectator. This includes the Green Point Park, a conference facility, a number of venues in the park and the recently renovated and upgraded Green Point Athletics Stadium. The Cape Town Stadium conference center is a 2 storey complex called The Mixing Zone. The two storeys are connected by a large, spiral staircase that ads a touch of architectural elegance to the industrial space. While the upper floor is divided into 3 main rooms with exits to one of the stadium’s balconies, the bottom floor is a large open space that serves as a blank canvas to any event organizer. In addition, the stadium offers a large capacity business lounge, network lounges and a presidential suit.

l Hello Cape Town September 2018

These all offer a view onto the stadium’s pitch. Two more conference rooms are located at the north and south ends on the oval complex, furnished with boardroom chairs for maximum comfortability to attendees and all the must have plugins and connectivity options. The Green Point Park offers a series of open lawns that can be hired and modified for any desirable, private or corporate event, including the open air amphitheater. The last feature in the vicinity is the recently upgraded and totally refurbished Green Point Athletics Stadium. All facility structures are made accessible for the disabled and boast an abundance of free parking. Full details and application forms are available on www.capetown.gov.za/capetownstadium/home

we’ve been to h e T Sun r e d n U Taking up over a block in the heart of Cape Town central, the Tsogo Sun group aimed to create a well worth destination in the city. Situated on a visible spot on the corners of Buitengracht, Strand and Bree Street, they rebuilt almost the entire block, raised two adjoining hotels, the Sun Square and a Stay Easy and restored to its former glory, the traditional Victorian buildings on the corner of Buitengracht and Castle Street. This exposed, attention drawing location created the opportunity to go beyond the call of duty and Tsogo Sun rose up to the challenge by embedding two features that will cater for guests and day visitors alike. On the street level one will find the Vigour & Verve restaurant. An allday eatery headed by Chef Marlene Makinson. Chef Marlene, who grew up to her position from starting as a waitress in the tourism industry more than 20 years ago and carved her way up to the position of Executive Chef, brings her passion and love for food, people and Cape Town culinary heritage into the menus she designs. The all-day menu is an anthology of South African favourites from any house hold daily menu, designed to familiarize patrons to the Capetonian taste and local cuisine. You will come to meet braai broodjies – the South African version of toasties, hot prego rolls, boerie rolls - our version of hot dog but ohh… so different, burgers and pizzas, all with a South African interpretation. Lunch and dinner menus are going a step further. To put it in one sentence, it’s a deconstruction and reassembling of classic local dishes. You will find representatives to any major South African kitchen or way of cooking, all modified to a fine dining experience. Seafood, Braai, Shisa Nyama, Slaai, Pickled Fish, Cape Malay and slow roast Ouma’s way. For you not to miss any part of the experience, take a seat in front of the open kitchen and watch the orchestrated work that is made in its way to deliver your desire. With drawing it all from our diverse culture, you might even pick some new words along the way. The experience concludes with the Harvest Table- a generous dessert table, stocked throughout the day with both local and international favourites. The other feature is the 14 Stories Rooftop Bar. Situated above the buzzing city with views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill and the Cape Town Harbour, it is a charming location to enjoy a light menu of casual snacks and cocktails. Either watching a sunset or enjoying an evening breeze, it is an intimate, modern chic place to inhale the city. Vigour & Verve Breakfast: 06:30 to 10:30, Lunch: 12:30 – 15:00, Dinner: 18:30 – 22:00. Roof Top Bar open daily 12:00- 23:00 Sun Square, 79 Strand Street. www.tsogosun.com/sunsquare-cape-town-city-bowl Hello Cape Town September 2018 l

Not many recommendations could be more promising than those made by a knowledgeable sommelier that still needs to look you in the eye after he’s made a suggestion to match your food and taste request. With that in mind, 9 known and respected South African women and men of the trade put their names and make their judgments to create an annual consumer wine list, the closest one can get to a fail proof list of recommendations that will keep your wine drinking experience worth the effort.

THE 2018

SOMMELIERS SELECTION

The Sommeliers Selection is South Africa’s first wine competition judged solely by a panel of South Africa’s top sommeliers, in categories molded around those of a “wine list.” The South African Sommeliers on the panel all have extensive local and international judging and work experience. hello winelands 2018 NEDERBURG AUCTION

7 & 8 SEPTEMBER

An opportunity for wine enthusiasts from around the world to bid on and invest in an incredible collection of older South African fine, rare wines. Those fortunate enough to obtain a ticket to this exclusive event are treated to some of the finest foods and beverages, also synonymous with the Cape Winelands. Top celebrity chefs and baristas are on hand to treat guests to the unique evolution of their culinary and coffee creations, accompanied by live entertainment and world-class wines. To ensure wines are even more rare and exclusive to the Nederburg Auction, the entry criteria was changed in 2018. All red wines entered have to be six years and older, same for port and sweet wines. White wines and MCC were changed from 2 years to 3 years and older to be eligible for selection. All wines on auction should not have been available in the trade for at least a year prior to auction. The 2018 collection includes 108 wines from 64 producers including debut participants Bartinney, Beau Constantia, Le Lude and Sijnn. The wines on auction this year are fewer, even rarer than before and there’s something for every palate. What makes this collection so exciting is that no two years are the same. There are some seriously old wines with remarkable stories, new wines from very old vines and wines rated amongst the best in world.

what to see

A PIECE OF EDEN Known for authentically representing the different landscapes and climates of South Africa, at the same time with the Namaqualand desert, the Cederberg Mountains & the West Coast, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is being covered with a new blanket of colours for the season. The Namaqualand daisies and vygies carpet large areas of the garden, and the spring bulbs and many fynbos plants are in bloom at this time of the year. It is a feast for the eyes, a celebration of nature and an excellent opportunity to revisit one of Cape Town’s Big 7. Namaqualand daisies in all colours of the rainbow, dance in the breeze and follow the sun with open faces. You will see Ursinia (yellow, orange), Dimorphotheca (white, orange), Felicia (blue), Arctotis (orange, cream, red and

bronze), Senecio (purple, white) and Gazania (yellow, orange). Look closer to see many other annuals like the bokbaaivygies (Dorotheanthus bellidiformis) and the blue flax (Heliophila coronopifolia) in amongst the daisies.

www.samigration.com / www.sami.co.za South Africa awaits if you are considering immigrating and you will be pleased to know there are many opportunities for skilled immigrant workers, retirees and investors who will contribute to South Africa’s economic development. Vygies (pronounced fay-gh-ease) transform into a kaleidoscope of iridescent colour: brilliant pinks, purple, magenta, yellow and white – just about every colour but blue. You can’t miss the bright oranges and yellows of Lampranthus aureus, yellows and reds of Drosanthemum speciosum or the purples and pinks of Lampranthus roseus. Many bulbs flower in the spring. You are sure to see the cool elegant arum lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) and tall spikes of watsonias in the garden. To see the amazing variety and the beautiful shapes and colours of the Cape bulbs, including Moraea, Babiana, Sparaxis and Lachenalia, visit the Kay Bergh Bulb House in the Botanical Society Conservatory, where they are on display, safe from the ever hungry porcupines.

recommended wildlife must-dos CAPE FUR SEALS

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.

AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! SHARK CAGE DIVING Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great

White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!

CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined

The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

SAFARI

Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback).
