SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL PARKS WEEK This yearly treat to nature lovers all around South Africa will mark its 15th year. South African National Parks (SANParks), together with Total South Africa and FNB will be hosting the SA National Parks Week from 16 to 20 November 2020. SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni said, “SANParks has postponed the free access week which is traditionally held in September, to November due to the COVID-19 alert level 2 regulations which restrict the number of persons allowed within public spaces. Additionally, we have implemented extra visitor management procedures in the parks to manage visitor volumes in line with regulations to further mitigate the risk of the spread of coronavirus at this time.” SA National Parks Week is an annual campaign that gives all South African citizens the opportunity to enter most of the parks managed by SANParks for free, with the exclusion of Namaqua National Park and Boulders section at Table Mountain National Park. Free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities. Every year SANParks aims to increase the number of citizens that are granted free access to national parks during this time. Since the programme started in 2006, some 551 393 South Africans have been afforded the opportunity to enter national parks, and SANParks want to see these numbers grow. Mketeni said, “The week in partnership with Total South Africa and FNB is meant to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage and a deeper appreciation of biodiversity. It is important for South Africans to visit and know the importance of national parks.” Mketeni highlights the growing need for national parks to be relevant, particularly to young people and communities living adjacent to parks. “Through our Socio-Economic Transformation programmes and our Expanded Public Works Programme, we work closely with communities living adjacent to national parks in order to be more inclusive so we can tackle issues of wildlife crime with their help, afford them more access to parks for cultural use, inform young people about the different career options that parks have to offer and create job opportunities. SANParks hopes to strengthen and enable those communities to reap the benefits of the national parks.” Visit a national park this year for free during SA National Parks Week, to see what it has to offer and do your part by getting to know your national parks. SOUTH AFRICAN SUSTAINABILITY TOURISM PIONEER AND VISIONARY SCOOPS THE WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AWARD. The 2020 Skal International Sustainable Tourism Awards was presented at their annual general assembly on Saturday 17 October 2020. This year’s world congress assembly was held virtually after the intended Croatian event was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The virtual assembly, together with the presentation of its internationally acclaimed awards, gave a glimmer of hope while the tourism economy of the world is recovering from the COVID19 lockdown, and some regions going back into strict regulations. Having previously been awarded the most prestigious South African tourism awards: The 2014 National Lilizela Imvelo Award for best economic impact by a large tourism establishment in South Africa, and the 2015 National Lilizela Imvelo Award for sustainable development, Searl Derman, the owner of Aquila Private Game Reserve was proud to once again be honoured with the world’s most prestigious international sustainable tourism award: The 2020 Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award for a Major Tourist Attraction. The awards are geared towards enhancing the visibility and grant recognition to entities within the Travel and Tourism Industry. The awards are open annually to all public and private sector companies, educational institutions, NGOs, and government agencies. In its nineteen edition of the awards ceremony, 44 entities from 23 countries competed in the nine available categories.

Hello Cape Town November 2020
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said: “We send our congratulations to the team at Aquila Game Reserve for this international award, which comes at a time when we are working hard to promote our tourism sector both locally and internationally. Tourism is a major job creator in our province and making this sector more sustainable will help to create and preserve jobs in the long term.” Searl Derman, Aquila owner, noted that “it is a honour to receive global recognition for the sustainable tourism efforts we make in Cape Town – South Africa, and being the only South African recipient at the 2020 awards ceremony, we are proud to once again be able to shine the light on our ongoing projects and initiatives to enhance sustainable tourism, job creation, social upliftment, conservation and natural resource management efforts.“ Derman continued that “the 2020 awards are an extra special occasion, as we fought extra hard to support our teams, our business, social upliftment and conservation efforts during the pandemic. This international accolade inspires us to continue pushing hard and working day and night on our recovery efforts to ensure we have a business – and tourism sector – to welcome guests back to, in order for them to experience the dedication and heartfelt efforts of all our staff at our Big 5 Safari lodge just outside of Cape Town”. The local community of Touws River is extremely important to Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa. This former railway town is situated 12km from the Big 5 game reserve and was left in poverty when the former railway services closed down leaving approximately 97% of its 15 000 residents unemployed. Over the last 21 years, Aquila has empowered the local residents through employment and upskilling, while the business operation also enabled flourishing supporting small businesses. Three prominent and distinguished judges from internationally recognized entities have independently evaluated each entry based on leadership criteria in sustainability that encompass tangible, measurable benefits to the environment, enhance business, and the society and communities in which they operate. “We continue to lift the spirits of our teams as we work hard and put in every effort to uplift them socially and economically. Our social involvement programmes together with our conservation efforts, like Saving Private Rhino, is proud of the work we achieve. We do this work selflessly and we most certainly do not do them for the awards, but we appreciate the honour we have to stand on the world stage as we try every day, to make the world a better place through tourism.” Searl Derman concluded. SOUTH AFRICA Saving Lives. Creating Futures. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is a charity staffed by almost 1 000 volunteers who respond 24/7/365 to save lives on South African waters. Our goal is to prevent drowning: be it reactive, by rescuing any person or animal in need, or proactive through advocacy and teaching water safety wherever we go. Our rescue crew members are all unpaid volunteers and we do not charge for rescue services. Through our Drowning Prevention initiative we work together with
other services to lobby for effective signage at beaches and run public awareness campaigns around water safety issues. Our WaterWise Yazi Ngamanzi instructors visit schools to teach children about water safety, peer rescue, what to do in an emergency, who to call for help and how to do basic HandsOn CPR. The success of our organisation is largely determined by the generous financial support of sponsors and donors.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

proudly porterville annual art weekend The annual event will be taking place once again in the picturesque town of Porterville in the Swartland, north of Cape Town, from the 26th to the 29th of November. Now in its third year, the festival provides an opportunity for art lovers, foodies, families, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone looking for a city escape to get out and about, make memories, have fun and view and purchase a wide variety of art from acclaimed artists that have made Porterville their home. What to expect: Proudly Porterville offers art enthusiasts, collectors, investors and interior decorators alike a weekend not to be missed. Besides the more “serious” business of viewing and purchasing art, there are many other activities on offer to make a long weekend of it. The Porterville community has come together to produce an exciting and varied festival, and visitors can expect exhibitions showcasing art and handcrafted products in the form of paintings, jewellery, ceramics, bespoke tableware, woodwork, mosaics, crochet, quilting, beading and more. Local artists will also be facilitating ceramic and painting workshops over the course of the weekend. Well over ten group exhibitions will take place at various venues throughout the town showcasing the work of a myriad of artists. In addition to this many of the resident artists will be opening their homes and studios directly to the public for the weekend. Something for everyone: In addition to the arts, there is something at Proudly Porterville for foodies, families, outdoor enthusiasts, young and old alike. Stock up on fresh local produce, preserves and many other delicacies at the Farmers Market. Enjoy a delicious meal at one of several top restaurants in town. Take part in one of the workshops being hosted during the weekend. Go mountain biking or running on the beautiful local trails. Relax and savour small town life – the list goes on. Nearly all of the attractions are within walking distance from each other, so visitors can park and stroll through the town, enjoying the art exhibitions, stopping for a meal, buying local fare – all with a beautiful mountain backdrop as Porterville is nestled at the foot of the Olifants Mountains. Porterville is only 150 km from Cape Town and visitors are encouraged to stay over the entire weekend. There are many different accommodation options on offer from more remote farm-stays to B&B hospitality in the centre of town, camping, self-catering accommodation and more. Tickets are not required for the Proudly Porterville weekend as entry is free, but accommodation bookings, restaurant reservations and workshop bookings are recommended ahead of the time due to demand.
