bloom fields

Flower season, usually at its peak in the months of August and September, is a feature at various South African national parks. A day drive or an overnight quickie out of Cape Town and you are transformed to places of extraordinary seasonal beauty, recognised as UNESCO heritage sites and national treasures. Namaqua National Park: During early August and September, seemingly overnight, the dusty valleys of Namaqualand are transformed into a wonderland, carpeted with wildflowers that draw visitors from around the country and from abroad. Tankwa Karoo National Park: The remarkable endemism and diversity of the Succulent Karoo flora, generally at its most spectacular from August to October, is one of the more prominent aspects of the park. The Lowland Succulent Karoo is described as very sparse shrub land and dwarf shrub land (< 0.3m). The Upland Succulent Karoo, which includes the Roggeveld and Elandsberg Mountains, is described as generally consisting of small to medium sized shrubs and succulents. West Coast National Park: Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay, and only 1.5 hour’s drive from Cape Town’s City Centre, one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park. Flower season in the West Coast National Park is at its peak from August to September annually. During these two months visitors to the park will see a wide variety of flowers on display, from daisies, to bulbs etc. Large areas of flowers can be seen in the Seeberg/Mooimaak and Postberg areas.

table mountain’s class in the clouds A programme that started almost 20 years ago on Table Mountain to teach learners about the outdoors, has now moved into the online space – welcome virtual Class in the Clouds. More than 4 million people live in Cape Town and its local suburbs, surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful mountains, beaches and scenery. Unfortunately, many local residents have yet to experience the New7Wonders of Nature on their doorstep - with a trip up Table Mountain in the cable car. As a way to provide greater access to the mountain, in 2001 the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) launched its Class in the Clouds programme. The programme gives learners and their teachers the opportunity of swapping their classrooms for a fun day of interactive learning at the top of the mountain. As the brainchild of John Harrison, the former Managing Director of TMACC from February 1993 until October 2006, the programme has seen more than 323 000 thousand learners experience the top of Table Mountain in all its beauty. “Our Class in the Clouds initiative offers young people a unique outdoor experience combining fresh air, breathtaking views across the Mother City, educational walks and fascinating facts about the biodiversity of Table Mountain,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director at TMACC. As part of the lockdown regulations, TMACC has been unable to open its operations to accommodate visitors. But this hasn’t stopped the organisation from finding new ways for students to access the mountain, including the development of a 360 virtual tour of the top of the mountain. “This brings a whole new dimension to our Class in the Clouds programme,” says Parker. “Learners and educators now have the chance to explore the mountain virtually. The experience allows students and teachers to traverse the pathways and experience our beautiful scenery online.” Parker explains that the tour is available on the TMACC website and there are further plans to incorporate storytelling and voice activated narration as part of the experience. RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS The programme includes a two hour informative guided walking tour along the summit of Africa’s Wonder of Nature. It also includes grade specific and curriculumaligned educational worksheets for primary and high school learners, incorporating life sciences and social sciences subjects. The educational packs include fun, interactive activities for learners such as word searches, quizzes, crosswords and group challenges. Facilitator notes equip teachers with a summary of the information contained in the packs, as well as mini assessments that they can set for their students. “The educational materials for our programme are all available online and can be downloaded from our website to provide teachers and educational assistants with unique resources for their students,” explains the Class in the Clouds programme manager, Fiona Magobiane. “As a leader in responsible tourism, social investment forms an important part of this – particularly through programmes like Class in the Clouds,” Parker concludes. south african terroir shines internationally

The Mentors winemaker Izele van Blerk

ESTEEMED FRENCH WINE JUDGES SHOWER FRESH ACCLAIM ON THE MENTORS BY KWV A trio of The Mentors by KWV wines have been singled out by the well-regarded judging panel of the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, highlighting once again the consistency of quality that this premier South African range continues to maintain. Gilbert & Gaillard annually taste and award more than 10 000 wines from the world’s best producers. Tastings are conducted quarterly by a panel of wine experts from France, epicentre of Old World wine excellence. Emerging among the most recent winners were The Mentors Petit Verdot 2017, scoring 92/100; and, The Mentors Orchestra 2017 and The Mentors Perold 2017, each scoring 93/100. The Mentors range was established to be the showcase of South Africa’s diverse terroir. They’re made by applying strict selection and the best viticultural and oenological know-how through to a dedicated cellar. This is about small batch wines and the truly refined art of winemaking, as highlighted by the most recent awards from Gilbert & Gaillard. A leading light - Mentors Petit Verdot 2017 It is uncommon to find Petit Verdot as a stand-alone wine because the classic Bordeaux variety commonly fails to reach optimum ripeness in that very cool region. In warmer New World regions, it can lack finesse if treated unkindly. “The quality of fruit and terroir at our disposal meant this variety offered the ideal opportunity to show what can be achieved,” says The Mentors winemaker Izele van Blerk.

16 l

Hello Cape Town August 2020

The fruit that went into the making of The Mentors Petit Verdot 2017 comes from two vineyards in Stellenbosch. One known for fruit providing concentration and structure; the other, red-fruit character and finesse. “The making of this wine is truly about selecting the best-of-the-best,” says Izele. In glass, it reveals an intense, ruby-red colour. Aromas are concentrated, leading with cranberries, floral notes and sweet spice followed by black olives and aniseed. The palate is rich and juicy with prominent fruit sweetness. The grippy tannin structure is well integrated and delivers an intense, lasting finish. The Mentors Petit Verdot 2017 may be enjoyed right away but will cellar well for at least eight years. With food, it fares extremely well alongside hearty red meat dishes and aged cheese.

Unity is strength – The Mentors Orchestra 2017 This vintage of the Orchestra is extra special – it was the first time Carménère was included in the blend. Again pursuing “the best-of-the-best” philosophy, the wine comprises a blend of six varieties and involved a seven-stage selection process. Each wine was tasted individually to determine its own unique contribution. The largest portion of fruit in the blend hails from Stellenbosch, a region known for producing exceptional Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant, with the grapes coming from Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington. The remainder, Merlot (19%), Cabernet franc (11%), Malbec (10%), Petit Verdot (6%) and Carménère (4%) are all from Stellenbosch. “Working with grapes from different regions, gives us the opportunity to get the unique characteristics of each variety and region,” says Izele. The result is a wine that shows aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, plums and black pepper with nuances of pencil shavings and dried herbs. On the palate, the intense concentration is prompted by a firm tannin structure and layers of sweet fruit with a long follow-through. The wine can be opened now or cellared for up to eight years. It can be enjoyed on its own or paired with braised lamb shoulder or filet mignon.

A great tribute - The Mentors Perold 2017 This wine is a unique Cape Blend conceived in tribute to the work of Prof Abraham Perold and his legacy not only at KWV but throughout the South African wine industry. The 2017 vintage incorporates five varieties – Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec and Petite Sirah. “The goal has always been to produce a wine that over time will be recognized as South Africa’s ultra-premium benchmark,” says Izele. “Only the best varieties, regions and sites are therefore considered, and winemaking is firmly focused on balanced structure, concentration and finesse. “We utilize a combination of whole-berry fermentation and gentle pump-overs to ensure every bit of flavour is captured, with Pinotage taking priority.” For this wine, the bunches – from Swartland, Stellenbosch, Wellington, Darling and Banghoek - were handpicked and sorted. Following fermentation and vinification, the most promising wines of each cultivar were chosen to mature further in barrel. After 12 months, the best wines were singled out again and aged another six months. In glass, the wine is elegant and shows the aromatic fruit sweetness of plums, sour cherries and black pepper. It is characterised on the palate with intense mouthfeel and structure, attributes of great balance between fruit concentration and oak integration. The Mentors Perold 2017 can be enjoyed now or cellared for eight to ten years from vintage. Pair with hearty winter dishes such as oxtail and lamb shank. The wines are temporarily not for sale in South Africa due to legislated pandemic regulations.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

prestigious wine auction goes online

Participate in the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild yearly auction and enjoy wines made by upcoming star winemakers. Established in 1982, the Cape Winemakers Guild is a collective of some of South Africa’s greatest winemakers. These 42 winemakers have been recognised as excelling at their craft by their peers within the Guild. Membership of the Guild is by invitation only and is extended to winemakers who have been responsible for the production of outstanding wines for a minimum of five years and who show promise of not only consistently exceeding industry standards but also promoting the values of the Guild. The members are eligible to submit wines exclusively for the annual Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction. The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction goes live and online this year, offering wine enthusiasts and collectors the opportunity to bid on current CWG Auction Wines and exceedingly rare previous CWG Auction gems from members’ personal vinotheques. There will be two separate and distinct auctions in 2020 and both will be hosted by international auction house Bonhams. The CWG Vinotheque Auction hosted by Bonhams will feature small collections of past CWG Auction wines perfectly stored in the Guild members’ private cellars. All funds raised will be placed in a trust to help winemakers keep their businesses afloat in the aftermath of Covid-19 in order to continue employing those who depend on an income from the wine industry. Bidders will be able to place their bids on the Bonham’s website over a two-week period from Friday, 18 September 2020 until 16:00 (London time) on Saturday, 3 October 2020. The 2020 Nedbank CWG Auction hosted by Bonhams will be held live and online on Saturday, 3 October 2020 from 12:00 (London time). Wines on offer will be the current year Auction wines and wine lovers will be able to bid as the auction

progresses, either by watching and bidding live and online via the Bonhams website or by telephone; or by placing proxy or commission bids with Bonhams in advance. “We live in unprecedented times and as leaders of the industry, the Guild has taken a pragmatic yet positive approach to the challenges we are faced with, ensuring that we can continue to support our communities, our customers, and our members.” says Andrea Mullineux, CWG Chair. Registrations for both Auctions will open on the Bonham’s website (www.bonhams.com) from Friday, 14 August 2020. “Bonhams is delighted to be supporting not only the Nedbank CWG Auction – for the second year running – but also the special CWG Vinotheque Auction to raise funds for vineyards, and the people who work there, hit by the economic effect of Covid-19.” says Global Director of Fine Wine, Master of Wine Richard Harvey. Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to declare a National State of Disaster, all indicators show that the regulations which prohibit all social gatherings will continue to remain in force for some time to come. As the health of those around us is our number one priority, the CWG has cancelled all local public events for the remainder of 2020. The Guild looks forward to hosting its public events again in 2021.

the ‘new retail’ for the new normal

If there is only one shop you are going to visit this month…. The Covid-19 enforced prohibition on all live events presented SA’s best-loved artisan market platform with a tough challenge…. With their entire business landscape effectively wiped out in one swoop, KAMERS/Makers could either give up, close doors and walk away from the hundreds of SME (small & medium enterprises) artisans who have come to depend on this national platform for a significant chunk of their livelihoods… KamersVol chose to fight back with every ounce of entrepreneurial energy they could summon. The amazing team chose to work without pay, taking the March Cape Town event and the late April Jozi event online, upgrading and innovating their online shopping platform in order to cope with the tens of thousands of new visitors. But with courier deliveries still on hold this could only provide limited relief, so they needed to find other ways for Makers to trade. They could not simply wait for Level 1 (probably the earliest that live shows will once again be permitted). They needed to find ways to leverage the transformed business landscape of level 3. Looking carefully at where opportunity might hide within the problems swamping our country… Retail has been battered everywhere, especially in malls and larger shopping hubs. Vacant shops and other spaces have been popping up in most major centres around the country. And now… so will KAMERS/Makers! RE-ENVISIONING RETAIL The ‘new retail normal’ dictates that the less flexible, long-term – and more conservative – models of the past be radically re-envisioned. KAMERS/Makers SPACE is a fast and fluid collective of SA’s finest Makers – carefully curated to pop-up (and down!) in any empty retail space, in just a few days.

l Hello Cape Town August 2020

It offers shoppers a brave new hybrid of the convenience of an everyday, local outlet in the ‘old retail’ mode, but now combined with the vibrant, eclectic mix of amazing products that only KAMERS/Makers can offer. Essentially, they have reinterpreted the two key pillars of their success… Live shows would concentrate a huge variety of Makers (180+) in a vast venue for a very limited period (5 days only), drawing the crowds that made the platform so successful. And which are an absolute no-no under current pandemic conditions. Now they offer a smaller number of ‘best of the best’ Makers (about 50) – in residence for a much longer period… from 1- 3 months, with the Maker mix constantly changing week on week. It’s the best of both worlds for KAMERS/Makers devotees! Plenty of time to shop at their convenience over weeks and months, and the constantly changing, vibrant variety that has made KAMERS/Makers so immensely popular over two decades.

THE NITTY GRITTY KAMERS/Makers SPACEs will pop up in a number of key locations in popular venues around the country. Every SPACE will be Covid-19 screened and certified – with rigorous controls in place to regulate entry and ensure the safety of all. A cashless system will be in operation, with a single central pay-point for shopper convenience. The KAMERS/Makers full online portal will be in situ – so shoppers can instantly order any of the 7000+ products that may not be on the shelves, for subsequent collection or delivery. So welcome to the new retail – vital, vibrant, innovative and proudly local – the sooner we as South Africans begin rebuilding our SME economy, the sooner the African sun will break through the clouds of Covid-19! The pop-up shops offer a beautifully curated shopping experience, featuring over 6000 unique Maker wares – winter fashion, handcrafted decor, tasty deli goods, post-lockdown specials and more – all in one amazing space.
