when the going gets tough
There is nothing better than the half full of the part of the glass. Having the liquid of your choice in it is even better. The Wine Nerd, a San Francisco based Instagrammer and blogger, initiated #SupportOurWineries for some much needed relief, and to help keep wineries of all sizes reaching wine lovers all over the world. Although the platform first started in the US, out of love and solidarity, room was quickly made for South African wines. The Wine Nerd created #SupportOurWineries as a platform to collect the ways that consumers can help support the wines we love and the businesses that make them. Please consider supporting your favourite wineries and sharing this initiative using the #SupportOurWineries hashtag on social media. Wineries are welcome to keep joining and consumers are encouraged to make a purchase that will help this much loved industry to keep thriving. National and international deliveries will be made as soon as possible following the change in circumstances and global air traffic.

a diy spa day at home
Courtesy of Steenberg Spa, Steenberg Wine Estate, Constantia Valley
There is no reason to skip your monthly spa day while at home. While you cannot get to your favourite spa, you have plenty of time for some DIY. The spa therapists from Steenberg Hotel & Spa have created the perfect skincare regime that you can do at home with a handful of ingredients. FACIAL Cleanse as normal and then use this combination of ingredients to exfoliate after cleansing: Exfoliate: Soak oats in water with a little bit of honey. Apply the oats to your face and move in a circular motion with your fingertips for 2 – 3 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water. This process will remove excess dead skin cells and prime the skin for the next steps of your facial. Don’t have any oats in the pantry? No problem. Lemon juice is a fantastic natural fruit acid exfoliating agent. Apply lemon juice onto the skin and leave for 2 – 3 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water. This process will remove excess dead skin cells and lighten and brighten the skin. Mask: Mash a ripe avocado with a fork, apply to the skin and leave for 10 – 15 minutes. Remove with lukewarm water. This will hydrate and moisturise the skin. Only have an egg? No problem! Separate the egg white from the egg and apply the egg white on to the skin using a brush. Leave on for 10 – 15 minutes. The egg white has anti-ageing properties and will tone and tighten the skin. BODY SCRUB While your mask is activating on your face, use this combination of ingredients to create a wonderful body scrub to remove dead skin cells: Mix brown sugar with olive oil. Apply and scrub all over the body. Rinse off in the shower or in the bath. Moisturise afterwards with your favourite body lotion. And that’s it! Your easy DIY spa day at home. Pair this regime with a bubble bath and a glass of wine and you’ll be refreshed and revived. Always remember to test for sensitivity on a patch of skin before going ahead with the treatment. If you experience an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

celebratory drinks Quite a handful of high holidays, festive dates and public holidays ahead of us and with having some extra free time it is an opportunity to master your presentation skills. No matter the season, serving a cocktail using fresh, seasonal ingredients while using locally crafted spirits is always a good choice. KWV’s CRUXLAND Gin team shared with us a few innovative and detailed recipes. This particular Gin uses a unique South African component, found nowhere else in the world. The indigenous inhabitants of the Kalahari tell of secret treasures in the sand; sent down in crackling bursts of power from the skies. With knowledge passed down from generation to generation, the nomadic people of the desert would look to the heavens, watching thunderclouds and setting out when lightning struck, searching for delicate, X-shaped cracks in the arid earth. As it happens, these “treasures” are N’abbas; rare Kalahari Desert truffles that burst from the ground when rain and autumn moisture cause them to swell. Rare even in their natural soil, these delicacies grow far apart and are hard to find without the help of a skilled N’abbas hunter. KWV has revived these treasures of the earth, hand-crafting a small batch of premium gin from grape spirits infused with the exotic taste of the Kalahari truffle and 8 signature botanicals, unlocking unique characteristics resulting in an extra-smooth finish. A clear, fragrant liquid that is lightly tinted by the signature botanicals, Cruxland Gin boasts notes of fresh juniper and lemon, further enhanced by coriander and spices with an earthy character from the Kalahari truffles. Cheers to your health and happiness!
The patriotic facts: First gin in the world to be infused with Kalahari truffles (known as !N’abbas) Handcrafted in small batches. Super-premium double-distilled gin made from the highest quality, 100% pure grape spirits – smooth sipping gin. Infused with 8 signature botanicals indigenous to South Africa, including Rooibos and Honeybush uniquely infused with Kalahari truffles. Cruxland unlock unique, characterful flavours resulting in an award winning world-class gin. The rugged earthy packaging is attractive and intriguing. The leather neckstrap feature resembles the cracked earth of the Kalahari and the distinct bold spirit of the N’abba Hunters.
