Hello Cape Town December 2019
When one of their husbands dies of leukaemia, the ladies decide to create a calendar to raise funds to buy a new settee for the hospital`s waiting room.
However, unlike previous calendars featuring bridges and landscapes, this one will feature the women discreetly posing nude and barely covered by strategically placed cakes, teapots, flowers, knitting and a piano. The calendar is a surprising success and quickly sells out. The resulting media attention and publicity eventually takes its toll and the Calendar Girls find themselves more exposed than they had ever planned. People continue to struggle with insecurities around race, sexism and spousal abuse, not just in South Africa, but all over the world. violence and more. Get ready for drama, thrills and unexpected twists and turns. This is Shakespeare like you’ve never seen it before. cape winelands on the top ten best Lonely Planet, a world leader in travel advice, recently published their recommendations for 2020 and placed South Africa’s Cape Winelands on the 8th place for the ‘Best in Travel 2020’ Best ValueThe best destinations, journeys & sustainable travel experiences for the year ahead. The explanation for including the Cape Winelands is as follows:
Eagles Nest Winery
‘South Africa is a regular fixture in lists of places that offer a friendly exchange rate for those looking for world-class safaris and other wildlife spotting, but there’s much more to the country than Kruger and other reserves. A short journey from the fabulous food city of Cape Town is the country’s wine region, centred on the historic towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The real action here is at the wineries and fabulous restaurants dotting the beautiful upland scenery. You won’t find elephants snuffling round the vineyards, but you will find inexpensive tasting tours followed by lazy lunches serving world-class food alongside delicious local wines. If you care to stretch your wallet a little further when staying the night you can sleep it all off in highend guesthouses and B&Bs that would cost a lot more elsewhere.’ Locally broadcasting to the world our Mother City and the Cape Winelands, we are glad to share some highlights picked out from the vast possibilities laid out for you. The Constantia Wine Valley is a small wine region consisting of 11 wine estates. It is also the first and oldest of our wine regions. Some of the farms are included on the City Sightseeing Mini Peninsula Tour.
De Grendel Wine Estate
Eagles’ Nest Winery, halfway between Constantia Village and Hout Bay is an award winning boutique winery with its wines being available either at the estate or at some of the best restaurants in SA. Your stop en-route is an opportunity to sample their exquisite range and indulge in their all year platters and winter soup offerings. On the other side, just north-east of the city there is the Durbanville Wine Valley cluster. This collection of wine estates houses many of the city’s favourite outdoor events including music, beer & wine festivals, vineyard runs, walks & mountain biking. It is also the home of De Grendel Wine Estate. The estate’s fine dining restaurant is constantly positioned among the best establishments this city has to offer. It also enjoys the one of a kind panoramic view of the entire bay and Table Mountain from both the tasting room and the restaurant.
Perdeberg Winery
With currently being in 3rd place on TripAdvisor, you’d better make a booking once you decided on your trip to Cape Town. And with that kind of reputation, we can assure you that they have a range of award-winning wines to match. De Grendel is an Uber drive away from town so no other special arrangements are needed other than to get there in time to enjoy the scenery. Further north, the Paarl Wine Valley, houses larger wine producers that each offer a unique twist for their visitors. The Perdeberg Winery is known for its Dry Land collection of wines. In the last two years they’ve added non-alcoholic wine options and their own craft beer, all products tightening the connection to the land that surrounds them and to the fruit it bears.
KWV Wine Emporium

Hello Cape Town December 2019
Perdeberg is a very family friendly winery. They include the young in
value destinations for 2020 the pairing options with juice and sweets pairings and the winery’s restaurant, Eat @ Perderberg serves authentic South African cuisine with suitable options for all ages. Paarl is also home to the largest wine cellar in the southern hemisphere. It houses the KWV co-op. KWV is routed in the history of South African wine making from its early days. They hold a versatile network of grape farmers in the best locations all over the Cape Winelands, allowing them to produce several award-winning brands of wine and spirits, including their world renowned brandy that knocked out some of the best known cognacs. Their visitors are welcome to explore the magnificent Wine Cathedral and enjoy the KWV Sensorium while sipping wine. The Sensorium houses some exquisite works by South African master artists. Inspired by the art of winemaking, this contemporary space celebrates art with works by Irma Stern, Gregoire Boonzaaier, Pierneef, Maggie Laubser and David Botha, amongst others.
Laborie Wine Estate
The KWV Wine Emporium offers sparkling wines, natural wines, fortified wines, liqueurs and brandies, a variety of tasting experiences and frequent cellar tours conducted in English and German. Tastings do include sophisticated, non-alcoholic options. An al-fresco, tranquil option is offered at Laborie Wine Estate, just off the main road. A set of Cape Dutch buildings, overlooking the rolling vineyards, houses an Italian restaurant and a bistro to choose between. Tasting is made in the old Manor House or outside, on its balcony with a panoramic view of the valley in front.
Dieu Donne Vineyards
The Franschhoek Wine Valley is just picture perfect from any angle or location. You can get there using the Cape Town City Sightseeing Wine Tram explorer. Three times a week, a City Sightseeing double decker, luxury, Wi-Fi included bus heads to the Franschhoek Wine Tram central station. From there you can choose a Wine Tram route to explore and be driven back to the city in the afternoon. Alternatively, the Wine Tram itself offers pick-up and drop-off services from town. The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a classic, double decker cart that uses the old railroads of the valley in coordination with specifically designed buses to get you to the most beautiful wine estates in a series of 8 different, hop-on, hop-off routes. A very difficult choice with so many magnificent estates! Just to point out a few options: you may want to consider Dieu Donne Vineyards for the view and the wines which you actually cannot purchase anywhere else in South Africa, Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards for their South African Table experience - a designed fair of plates and wines conducted by the estate chef and the sommelier to orchestrate a once in a lifetime memory.
La Motte Wine Estate
And since we’ve already begun with music analogies, La Motte Wine Estate is an exquisite classical symphony. It holds a historical, well preserved cellar that houses the tasting facility, a fine dining restaurant, Pierneef à La Motte which also serves a more casual, small plates menu in a less formal sitting. An open wine and craft beer bar for a more casual experience, a museum of South African art and a picnic option in the center of the complex. All the buildings are dotted in a sculpture garden that makes your visit feel part of all the happenings that surrounds you. Vrede en Lust Wine Estate, another favourite stop among the routes, is

all about the unstoppable connection between the vines that surround and your tasting glass. It is shown in the grand window of the tasting room, overlooking the source in any season you visit, the accommodation rooms that make sure to give each one a view of beyond, the conference and wedding venue that dominates the scenery, again, placing you as the lord of it all. A stunning choice for your winelands event.
In addition to great wines and a chance to stock up on some really old vintages, Delheim is known for their winter series of Wine and Fondue Sundays. On the other end of the scale one should pay attention to the ultra-modern Quoin Rock.
Lastly, Stellenbosch, our largest wine route with a vast selection of experiences from family to romantic, from popular to secluded.
While the old Cape Dutch Manor House and attached buildings are a tranquil escape with complete privacy, manicured gardens, a sauna and a swimming pool, the day visitors’ areas are still and glass.
Our pick off the beaten track is Delheim Wine Estate. It is located off the R44 at the end of a picturesque road, high on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, 50 km from Cape Town.
They include a wine lounge a double storey, high ceiling venue hall and Gåte Restaurant, all surrounded by a crisp landscape to match.
This family owned historical estate thrives on the symbiosis between agriculture and nature for many decades. They enjoy a fruitful soil that produces great wines and offers tastings that involve flavours from their surroundings.
Gåte Restaurant is a full theatrical affair. They serve a 6-course set menu for the daytime experience and a 7 or 14-course set menu for dinner. Each plate in both menus is a construction of flavours and elements that somewhat disguise their true nature, leading to an experience full of surprises.
The tasting room is in the authentic ancient cellar, the restaurant is positioned to enjoy a gap in the mountain pick, providing a view over Table Mountain on clear days and picnics are served under old oaks on the lawns that graze the thick forest up the slop. The restaurant serves South African cuisine that is based on local, seasonal ingredients.
Delheim Wine Estate
Whichever choice you make, on or off our list, we strongly recommend pre-booking even out of season since South Africans also enjoy some local picks over national holidays and long weekends.

diamond museum Turned eight
One of Cape Town’s most unique and enduring tourist attractions, the Cape Town Diamond Museum, celebrated its eighth anniversary on Saturday, 23 November 2019. It remains the only facility of its kind, showcasing the staggering effect that 3.3 billion-year-old diamonds have had on the world, the South African economy and the hearts of millions who have celebrated truly special occasions with the gift of the most sought-after gems. The Cape Town Diamond Museum pays homage to the extraordinary story of humankind’s fascination with diamonds in an insightful, sophisticated and stylish manner, which has made it a firm favourite with local and international visitors alike. At its opening in 2011, then-CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold, hailed the Cape Town Diamond Museum as “an exciting addition to Cape Town’s diversity of attractions, telling the stories of our city and country and the journeys that shaped our history” – something which remains at the heart of the museum’s mission. The Cullinan, The Hope, The Taylor-Burton… The names of some of the world’s most famous diamonds conjure images of incomparable beauty, fiery passion and deep mystery. While the world’s most famous, dazzling gems are often only part of private collections, it’s possible to see magnificent replicas of the best-known diamonds in the world at the Cape Town Diamond Museum. In a first for the country – The Desert Rose Ring, featuring 798 diamonds, was a showstopper at The Protagonist, an exhibition curated by Vogue Italia for the prestigious Salon Art + Design Fair in New York City this last November. Shimansky was selected to join a line-up of international fine jewellery design houses to celebrate the best in mindful and sustainable fine jewellery. This ring has been on display at Shimansky’s showroom on New York’s iconic 5th Avenue post the event and now, as part of the Cape Town Diamond Museum’s 8th birthday, Capetonians and visitors of the Mother City will be able to experience the beauty of the Desert Rose Ring too. Shimansky Jewellers Founder and CEO, Yair Shimansky, is proud that the Cape Town Diamond Museum continues to showcase the story of the world’s most beloved treasure, a diamond. “It’s our privilege to continue to share this journey from mine to finger with visitors from far and wide and continue to inspire and excite our guests with unique displays that offer true insight into these glittering gems”. The Cape Town Diamond Museum is situated on Level 1 of the Clock Tower at the Waterfront in Cape Town and is open 7 days a week, from 9am – 9pm. For more information, visit www.capetowndiamondmuseum.org. As part of their 8th birthday celebrations, one can book a complimentary tour on www.capetowndiamondmuseum.org/contact/booking-form/trade-partners/

la motte exhibition expands
Jacobus Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef (13 August 1886 Pretoria – 4 October 1957 Pretoria), was a South African landscape artist, generally considered to be one of the best of the old South African masters. His distinctive style is widely recognised and his work was greatly influenced by the South African landscape. Most of his landscapes were of the South African highveld, which provided a lifelong source of inspiration for him. Pierneef’s style was to reduce and simplify the landscape to geometric structures, using flat planes, lines and colour to present the harmony and order in nature. This resulted in formalised, ordered and often monumental view of the South African landscape, uninhabited and with dramatic light and colour. The La Motte heritage collection on JH Pierneef was acquired from his daughter Marita Pierneef-Bailey in 2009. The collection features 45 artworks dating between 1908 and 1955 as well as Pierneef memorabilia inclusive of documents, books, artefacts and his painting equipment.

l Hello Cape Town December 2019
The La Motte Wine Estate boasts its permanent heritage collection in the museum and a series of 128 linocut prints displayed in various visiting areas on the estate. And recently the significant SONOP COLLECTION added to LA MOTTE’S PIERNEEF exhibition ten artworks. Sonop is an established, private and independent men’s residence for fulltime students of the University of Pretoria. Initially founded by the Dutch Reformed Church Pretoria (Bosman Street) in 1916 and now owned by the Society of Sonop Old Boys, Sonop was the home of wellknown alumni of the University of Pretoria including Dr. Anton Rupert (of La Motte), Mr. Pik Botha, Prof. Murray Janson, Prof. Nico Smit, Prof. Willie Jonker and Dr. Uli Schmidt. The residence’s first housemaster, Prof. WP de Villiers (1916 – 1937), was a friend of Pierneef and it was on his suggestion that the Sonop Board invested in fourteen Pierneef artworks, acquired directly from the artist. The collection of fourteen works was initially exhibited in Sonop, but when four works were stolen in 1963, the remaining works were loaned to the then newly
open Pretoria Art Museum (1964) for exhibition and safekeeping. Since the nineties, the collection has been in the care of the University of Pretoria Art Collection under the supervision of curator Gerard de Kamper. With the wish of Sonop to share the collection with a wider audience and with Dr Rupert an old Sonop resident, these special works have now found a very fitting home as part of the Pierneef Heritage exhibition in the La Motte Museum. Each year, different prints of Pierneef are featured on the special wine collection at the estate. Pierneef Wine verities change every year and are bottled only with the finest of the harvest. The full year collection is available to purchase on the estate. The La Motte Museum is open Tuesday Sunday 09:00 - 17:00. Closed on Mondays and Christian Public Holidays. Free Access

Cascade Country Manor, in the Paarl Wine Valley is known for being a luxurious accommodation jewel, tacked on the slope of the Hawekwa Mountains. The Manor House and the joined buildings are surrounded by an olive grove and the calming sound of flowing water from the nearby cascades are the background soundtrack that accompanies the overall stay. The secluded location and the generous public spaces, combined with an on-site spa and loads of relaxing activities, makes a leisurely, relaxed getaway. The recent addition to the features offered by the hotel is the Riverside Massage and Picnic Boma area. It adds an outdoor experience like no other to their wellness focused spa. The Cascade Manor House Boma is structured on both sides of a live water stream and include a massage gazebo for two, a picnic table and a lounge area, all gently laid between exciting vegetation, connected by small wooden bridges and defined with a series of low wood and stone fences. The booking and use of this part of the hotel culminates in an exclusive 2 hour private experience for two. It includes a full, one hour head and back massage and the serving of a picnic delight thereafter. Cascade Manor house is well positioned to be a base for a few days’ excursion to explore the Cape Winelands. They offer a variety of accommodation options for either a romantic or a family holiday, classic and deluxe rooms, some with a direct exit to the English garden that dress the gentle slopes of the hotel. The hotel’s restaurant serves a continental breakfast buffet and a daily lunch between 11am- 6pm. Day visitors to the spa are welcome to add a meal to their visit. South Africa’s struggle for liberation was fought over three centuries of colonial domination and four decades of apartheid rule. In 1994 freedom was won and the world celebrated our new democracy with us. Today, the National Heritage Project Company, brings you the iconic leaders of this epic journey, from the first chiefs to the last activists, in The Long March to Freedom – a ground-breaking public attraction which recently relocated from the Cradle of Human Kind in Johannesburg to the grounds of Century City campus in Cape Town. The Long March to Freedom is a collection of 100 life-sized figures that will grow into a procession of over 400 bronze statues over time. Visitors can walk through the loosely spaced procession, beginning in the 1700s with rebel chiefs and renegade missionaries, along generations of freedom fighters, until they meet Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela at the dawn of South Africa’s democracy. The Long March to Freedom has been on exhibition at Maropeng, official Visitor Centre of the Cradle of Humankind, since January 2019, where it has enjoyed much positive public acclaim. The move to Cape Town is part of the project’s commitment to exposing as many South Africans as possible to this unique exhibition which presents the diverse history of their country through the lives of specific individuals. A oneof-a-kind concept, it is also the largest exhibition of representative bronze artworks anywhere in the world. Over the past 8 years, the Long March to Freedom has enriched the lives of many 1000’s of people, from the artists, foundries and trainees who worked on bronzes, to the school children who have never before had the opportunity to fully experience their own history and heritage, and the domestic and foreign tourists. Tickets for the exhibition are available online at Computicket for R50 - R75.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

zapiro receives france’s top cultural award
On November 13th, Cape Town born and bred, world renowned cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro, aka Zapiro, became the latest addition to a very short and prestigious list of South Africans to receive the French honour, Chevalier Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters). The award was presented by Ambassador of France to South Africa, H.E. Mr. Aurélien Lechevallier, on behalf of the French President. Initially enrolled at the University of Cape Town to study architecture, Zapiro disliked the course and decided to study graphic design at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. It was during his course change that he was conscripted into the South African army for two years in 1982. Although best known for his humourous, cutting edge and controversial cartoons, he was also a political activist during South Africa’s Apartheid regime and an active member of anti-apartheid movement, the United Democratic Front (UDF) that was formed in 1983. His then political alignment saw him being detained under the Illegal Gatherings Act in 1988, just prior to leaving South Africa to hone his skill at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The Order of Arts and Letters was established in 1957 by the then French Minister of Culture, for significant contributions to art and literature in France as well as abroad and is the highest cultural honour bestowed by the French government. Said Ambassador Lechevallier: “In Jonathan Shapiro, France wants to give recognition to an artist, a friend, but also a freedom fighter who shares the values of the French Republic.” Zapiro, who is currently the editorial cartoonist for well-known publication, Daily Maverick, is only the fifth South African to date to be decorated with this award and has joined the ranks of Johnny Clegg, William Kentridge, Gregory Maqoma and Zanele Muholi. A well-deserved award for a true South African hero. Très Bien, Zapiro! Images supplied by Daily Maverick - Photographer: Nicole Williamson
