ROLEX ARTS WEEKEND 8 & 9 FEBRUARY
THE PRODUCERS Based on the hilarious 1968 film, Mel Brooks’ The Producers is a laugh outloud, outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical-comedy that has been a smash hit since its 2001 debut. Fading Broadway producer Max Bialystok (played by Alan Committie) is desperate to get to the top of his profession again, and finds an unlikely ally in mousy accountant Leo Bloom (Richard White), who predicts that one could make far more money with a flop of a show than with a hit.
LA BOHÉME 14 - 22 FEBRUARY
Together, the two set out to produce the worst musical ever to hit Broadway. Unfortunately for them, their show is a huge hit! With no shortage of showstopping musical numbers, and Brooks’ signature humor keeping audiences in stitches, The Producers is definitely far from a flop. The third iteration of the SOLO section, will explore different representations of space including but not limited to the urban, domestic, architectural, and virtual, in a variety of media. Each edition of SOLO aims to present a more in-depth insight into the artistic practices of a varied selection of artists than is commonly found in the commercially-driven art fair setting.
In its third iteration, SOLO will focus on the notion of space and how it presents itself thematically in artworks; through an amalgamation of mediums and concepts that tie into each other, with themes ranging from the representation of the black body and its movement to issues of exile, migration, mythologies and leisure. Through this focus, SOLO aims to encourage Fair audiences to take note of the power relations that help to shape the boundaries of spaces and what is possible within them and who may enter, with which identities, discourses and interests. Past/Modern introduces a new guest-curated programme by Joao Ferriera (Curator, South Africa) featuring presentations by Modern masters. For the upcoming edition, the fair will present Southern Guild as a special project. Globally recognised for their leading African collectible design. Editions showcases leading print galleries and workshops that specialise in prints, multiples, and editions.

Dominating the N1 highway when it crosses through Paarl, the iconic Afrikaans Taalmonument (Afrikaans Language Monument) is a point of both physical and historical reference. It was created not only to remind, but also to carry on the youngest African language. Created verbally along the Western Cape’s west coast as a mean to enable trade between natives and seamen, it soon needed to be developed into writing for documentation purposes. That, in its turn started in Arab script and only later changed into the current Latin one. All those origins, mixed together and forced out of a new reality, soon emerged into a unique culture. A culture that embraces diversity, values community and finds the point of humour and laughter in harsh daily situations, where others will surrender to conflict.

The site, located on top of the Paarl mountain, comprises of a small museum which is dedicated to the preservers of the language, an outdoor gallery of poetry and poems, picnic grounds and an amphitheater, an exit point for hikers and mountain bikers to Paarl Rock, the 250° lookout of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Table Mountain and the architectural complex of the monument itself. The monument is a large scale physical expression of the language origins, current usage and aspirations. On-site guidance and explanations are offered and recommended. Since its inception, the site is also known to be a favourite venue for summer events. That includes live concerts and picnics, star gazing nights and full moon picnics. It is a great place to mingle with locals in a relaxed atmosphere and if you are not prepared for the occasion, the restaurant on-site will gladly assist with your needs.

sensing elements
As soon as the new owners of Quoin Rock Wine Estate took over the property in 2012, they embedded the ancient philosophy of the 5 Elements of Nature into the redesign and restructure. In a bold move to rebrand and modernise the old winery, they chose to dig deeper into the heritage of the land and the location, instead of importing foreign ideas that wouldn’t necessarily fit into place. Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth are all visible in one way or another when you visit the estate for the day or for a stay over. Separating the old part of the estate from the new results in creating two very distinct spaces. The old Manor House complex is fully revived to its old glory, modernised and gently restored. It is a 7 room complex with its own dining room, meeting room and pool, all surrounded by a lavish manicured garden. This luxurious heaven is to be booked as a whole. No separate room booking is available. On the other side of the hill, at the complex that is now the forefront of the winery, you enter a slick, specifically detailed, contemporary complex that includes the winery and wine cellar, Güte Restaurant at Quoin Rock and the Venue Hall. This part of the estate is surrounded by modern, to match design of landscape architecture, creating a coherent feeling when moving through the complex structure, in and out of it. The clean-line design corresponds with Far East elements of Feng Shui and Zen with a natural flow between the different parts of the building.Water, recognised by the owners as the source of the entire estate’s being, gets a variation of mentions around, providing a cool, earthy feeling on the hot day that we visited. From the old vine that is circulated by a gentle water fall in the foyer, through the use of other water features, all the way

to the wine label design - water echoes and interacts with visitors’ senses. The event venue is a clean pallet space that overlooks the Simonsberg Mountains. A generous double storey venue with a cigar room attached to it on the second-floor level, with a masculine interior design and a dominating position over the panoramic view. The venue enjoys its own entrance and an additional outdoor space and platform for any kind of mixed uses required. The Wine Lounge and Gåte Restaurant shares the same, ultra-neat and comfortable space. The tasting experience is a selection of 5 Quoin Rock wines presented by a wine ambassador together with a peek into the Cellar. Charcuterie or Cheese platter to accompany the wine, Oysters & MCC (Méthode Cap Classique- South African sparkling wine) or dessert & MCC are all prepared by the restaurant’s kitchen, matching the high level of fine dining with surprising elements from their gourmet, molecular food approach. Gåte Restaurant at Quoin Rock takes you on a journey of flavours around the earth, in a theatrical and artistic voyage with each plate served. It is open for a Daytime Experience Wed – Sun, 12:00 – 14:00 and for Dinner: Thurs – Sat, 18:00 till late. All experiences are fixed menus that are perfectly matched with their wine range. Self-driving day visitors can be rest assured with a special pairing offer of specifically sourced teas to complement each course. For lunch they serve a 6 course affair, designed for a leisurely 2 hours excursion around the world. Dinner offers two options: a 7 course or a 14 course menu, carefully sourced and designed to wow you. Although the restaurant is a welcoming, informal space, each meal experience follows a schedule that will give visitors enough time to indulge every stop along the way. Quoin Rock is named after ‘Quoin Point’, the second southernmost point of the African continent and the location of their other vineyard in the Elim wine region. This cool climate vineyard the source for the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc grapes. All other grapes are grown on the fertile soil of the Stellenbosch estate, reaching a superb constant quality to the level that they supply grapes to some of the renowned and award winning wine producers in both Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, to be blended into their wines. The 3 level, newly built winery produces 2 wine ranges namely Quoin Rock wines and Namysto wines. They include a full range with everything from Méthode Cap Classique (sparkling) to Late Harvest wine and even a newly introduced spirit that is currently available only in the Tasting Lounge. Wines are matured solely in French Oak barrels, reassuring a full body, quality wine products and keeping the quality narrative continuing through the entire production line. Both red wines we enjoyed during our visit, the Red Blend and the Shiraz, are suitable for aging and with two awards each you are already promised an interesting wine investment. A more laidback experience is offered on the lower lawns- a newly introduced posh picnic around garden tables, under specially built gazebos, beneath shading trees. The setting is complimented with poofs, picnic blankets and cushions and even a jumping castle set-up for visitors with children. The menu itself is a series of specially curated interpretations of Gåte’s food ethos but while the dishes at the restaurant are very specific, the picnic offers Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and No-Pork options. All preferences should be mentioned while booking. To finish the story in the estate team’s own words, “a visit to Quoin Rock is a composition. An opera. A volume of inter-connected short stories”. SUNNY DOLAT CHALLENGES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN AFRICAN MAN
With his finger on the beating pulse of African fashion, Kenyan-born creative director, artist and curator Sunny Dolat is making waves by interrogating what African men can and can’t wear, what African fashion means, and what queer theory has to offer film and fashion. What: With The Nest Collective, he’s telling stories through film, fashion, music and the visual arts to create inclusivity. Why: He wants African fashion to encompass all 54 countries on the continent, not just work from the fashion capitals of Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos and Dakar. He challenges notions of masculinity in a gender-fluid world. Follow: @dolatsunny and @thisisthenest on Twitter, and @sunnydolat and @thisisthenest on Instagram. THE TRANSFORMATIONAL ART OF IBRAHIM MAHAMA One of the leading attractions at Ghana’s first-ever pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the young artist has a passion for interpreting Ghana’s complex past through striking, totalising artworks that comment on his country’s commercial legacy, migration, globalisation, labour and value.
Sunny Dolat
What: Whether covering monumental buildings with repurposed jute sacks or documenting forgotten history by collecting a range of objects for exhibition, this restlessly intellectual artist engages with both memory and hope.
Why: Ibrahim Mahama’s gargantuan installations are both spectacle and representations of the fabric of Ghanaian life. Bold postcolonial statement and visionary artistry combine in his work. NATSAI AUDREY CHIEZA’S EXTRAORDINARY BIODESIGN SOLUTIONS The Zimbabwean-born designer’s exploration of synthetic biology has led to a whole new take on sustainable design, from dyeing textiles with microbes rather than toxic chemicals to using algae as building material. What: Expect a robust debate on the ethics and aesthetics of biotech from the founder and director of Faber Futures.

Why: Chieza foresees a future in which we return to nature to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

The Cape Town Carnival, held annually in March, is a street parade that showcases and celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa. For several hours on a late-summer evening, more than 50 energetic and talented community performance groups, spectacular floats, giant puppets and extravagant costumed performers bring the Green Point Fan Walk alive, while thousands of spectators from all over the world converge along the 1.2km parade route. Celebrating ten years of bringing people together, igniting joy and unity through creativity and providing second-to-none entertainment, the Cape Town Carnival will take place this year on Human Rights Day, 21 March 2020, on the Fan Walk in Green Point. The free-to-watch public spectacle is preceded by a year-round communitydriven performance-group programme rolled out across the Cape metropole. Sitting tickets on tribunes along the route are available for sale. It is advisable to use MyCiti buses, Cape Town’s public transport from early hours of the day to get to and around the Carnival area. A special timetable for the day will allow visitors flexibility.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

an innovative giant
In 1918, the year Nelson Mandela was born, South African wine farmers founded KWV (Ko-operatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika). The aim was to stabilise a young, but promising, industry. 100 years later, KWV is physically the largest wine cellar in the Southern Hemisphere, it offers a portfolio of globally award winning wines and spirits, an array of sophisticated wine brands and the best Brandy in the world to date. A visit to the KWV cellars and Wine Emporium is a walkabout through this vibrant, young history that is in constant change and evolvement. The two most remarkable changes occurred to our liking in recent times are located on the unaccepted end of the spectrum from an industrial giant.
their grapes from vines and grapes of high quality in a specific year and are identified even before harvest by the viticulturist and later attended to in a dedicated section in the winery, by one of the head wine makers in a boutique style manner. The outcome, although being limited in quantity, is a great source of pride for the producer, repeatedly achieving some of the highest possible scores by wine evaluators from around the word. The other, recent change is the embrace of diversity among visitors and social drinkers. For designated drivers or non-alcoholic visitors for either health or religious causes, KWV wine emporium offers a specially designed Tea & Chocolate pairing to keep everyone part of the overall experience.
The one is The Mentors range of wines: born out of the experimental nature of the industry and KWV’s obligation to tutor and nurture young wine makers. What started as an inner secret to re-examine methods and abilities, has evolved into a creation of a limited addition of barrel fermented wine brand that offers a slightly different range every year.
For outside party goers, KWV Non-Alcoholic portfolio include drinks that are made without any alcohol and are the perfect accompaniment for Mocktails and zero-alcohol occasions. Their Pearly Bay range includes a sparkling grape juice and the Fruit Lagoon is a delicious non-alcoholic cocktail base. It is made from fresh fruit and is completely fat and lactose free, to name a few.
Relying on the diversity of farms and terroirs, the KWV source
