New Year), in Cape Town, is a historical cultural celebration. As many as 13,000 minstrels take to the streets garbed in bright colours, either carrying colourful umbrellas or playing an array of musical instruments. The minstrels are self organised into klopse (“clubs” in Kaapse Afrikaans, but more accurately translates to troupes in English). Participants are typically from Afrikaans-speaking, working class “coloured” families who have preserved the custom since the mid-19th century. People consider the festival a rite of renewal that has been shaped by the Cape’s history. The events that are associated with Klopse in the festive season include competitions for the Christmas Choirs, Cape Malay Choirs and Cape minstrel choirs. The parade is held in the city center between District Six and Bo-Kaap, passing through the Grand Parade. Just follow the music, you won’t be able to miss it. SUMMER OF CHAMPIONS KENILWORTH RACECOURSE L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival 10 & 11 January The oldest horse racing event in South Africa bearing international significance. The winner of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Race gains automatic entry for America’s biggest raceday, the Breeder’s Cup. Both ladies and gentlemen are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion adhering to the dress code of blue and white. Outfits should be elegant. Best dressed for both men and women as well as best hat competitions are taking place on both days.

Cape Town Opera’s (CTO) special birthday next year promises to be much more than a coming-of-age event. This intrepid company, its loyal and supportive members and patrons, past and present, will celebrate its achievements and the outstanding manner in which it has grappled with change and transformation over the past two decades. Today, opera stands at the heart of cultural life in Cape Town and CTO is proudly representative of this country and its people. The 2020 Cape Town Opera Season will include five central repertoire masterpieces and one new commission, showcasing a wide range of South African operatic stars – many of whom are enjoying major international careers, and who will be making overdue returns to the opera stage of their home country. The season kicks off with Cape Town Opera Artistic Director Matthew Wild’s production of La Bohème, which premiered at the opera’s co-producing partners Konzert Theater Bern in Switzerland in 2018. An emotionally hard-hitting look at art, aging and the mistakes of youth, the production will showcase the Cape Town debut of Eva Marton, Competition -winning tenor, Galeano Salas, alongside returning South Africans, Sarah-Jane Brandon, William Berger and Thesele Kemane, and features unexpected contributions from much-loved Cape Town singers Aviva Pelham and Brad Liebl. In celebration of Beethoven250 and Human Rights Day, they will present Fidelio in Concert, with star soprano, Johanni van Oostrum, making her role debut as Leonore. Jeremy Silver conducts, Christine Crouse directs and the production will feature a newly commissioned linking narration by Standard

March will also bring a long overdue return to the Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series, for a Duet Endowment Trust Gala starring internationally celebrated soprano, Pumeza Matshikiza, supported by popular tenor, Sipho Fubesi, the CTO Young Artists and Chorus, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra – a not-be-to-missed once-off opportunity to hear great singing in one of Cape Town’s most spectacular settings. It will be a busy year for the opera Young Artists, including the much-admired soprano Brittany Smith and mezzo Ané Pretorius, who will feature strongly in principal roles in the three remaining productions of the year. With the University of Cape Town, opera will stage Benjamin Britten’s church parable, Curlew River, paired with a new chamber opera commission written by Sibusiso Njeza and Asanda Chuma Sopotela, as well as mounting a new Così fan tutte, reuniting the brilliant team responsible for 2019’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Steven Stead, Michael Mitchell, Kobus Rossouw and Jeremy Silver). Leading up to Christmas time, talented director Alessandro Talevi will return to South Africa to stage a wild and wonderful new Hänsel und Gretel, with Brittany Smith and Ané Pretorius as the eponymous siblings, and with mezzo Jenni Bank returning from the US to take on the double role of their mother and the wicked witch. As always, the award-winning CTO Chorus (under the expert direction of Marvin Kernelle) will be at the heart of activities in 2020 – including a richly varied international programme of new productions in prestigious houses in Europe and beyond.

Joining South African jazz legend Jonathan Butler on stage is Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer. The Grammy-nominated Butler draws on a vast repertoire, while constantly exploring new genres. Dulfer has performed with musicians such as Dave Stewart, Prince, Van Morrison, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, among others. Kenyan-born Aaron Rimbui is a self-taught pianist, keyboardist, drummer, bandleader, producer, and composer. In 2017, Rimbui joined South African jazz icons Herbie Tsoaeli on bass and Ayanda Sikade on drums to create the Kwetu Trio. Jacob Collier has been dubbed as one of the most innovative musicians of his generation. A self-described autodidact, Jacob taught himself to play over a dozen instruments in his music room in London. In 2012, he began making YouTube videos which have achieved legendary status in the music world, attracting the praise of such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, David Crosby, Steve Vai, and Quincy Jones, who manages Jacob to this day. Jacob produced, performed and recorded his debut album “In My Room” entirely by himself. This went on to win two Grammys. In January 2018, Jacob began creating a quadruple album called “DJESSE”. MF Robots (Music For Robots) is a soulful project by the Brand New Heavies founder Jan Kincaid. The drummer, songwriter and producer has teamed up with vocalist and multiinstrumentalist Dawn Joseph. Grammy Award winner PJ Morton is the busiest man in R&B. Alongside performing with pop powerhouse Maroon 5 and collaborating with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Solange, and
Erykah Badu. His solo career has taken off as 2017’s “Gumbo” garnered two Grammy nominations and 2018’s “Gumbo Unplugged” received three Grammy nominations. 2018 saw Morton play NPR’s Tiny Desk and he released his orchestral live album “Gumbo Unplugged”. Joining these international acts in celebrating 21 years of the finest jazz is some of the best homegrown talent that South Africa has to offer. Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa’s most distinguished pianist and a world-respected master musician, has toured the world extensively for more than a quarter-century. An icon of the South African resistance movement, his song “Mannenberg – ‘Is where it’s happening’” became an unofficial national anthem for black South Africans under apartheid. Songstress Lira, whose music career spans 15 years and includes six studio albums and three live DVDs, has established herself as one of South Africa’s foremost female artists and a formidable presence on the global music scene. Port Elizabeth trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis blends traditional gospel with new age Afro-pop to create an awardwinning sound for jazz lovers. His album Somandla was nominated for Jazz Album of 2019 at the SAMAs. The Ndlovu Youth Choir, who won hearts across the globe when they appeared on America’s Got Talent, have been performing to sold out shows on their first international tour. Their infectious energy and toe-tapping, uniquely South African musical performance, combined with mesmerizing choreography, have made this Limpopo choir a household name. From their rendition of Toto’s “Africa” to more traditional melodies, the Ndlovu Youth Choir infuses the beauty and energy of Africa into every performance. The choir recently won at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for their video collaboration with Wouter Kellerman on a Zulu version of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”. KwaZulu-Natal jazz musician Nduduzo Makhathini was raised in a musical family, where his love for music began at an early age. He completed his Diploma in Jazz Piano in 2005, and a decade later was awarded the 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist Award. His music brings an invigorating sound that merges the notes from his childhood – from traditional Zulu music, to Indian, choral and gospel. He is known for tracks such as “Echoes of you”, “Shwele” and “King Fela”. Makhathini has toured extensively and recorded with jazz icons such as Zim Ngqawana, Busi Mhlongo, Feya Faku, Carlo Mombelli, Salim Washington and Herbie Tsaoeli, among others. “Since its inception, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival has been a platform to showcase emerging and established talent from the continent and further afield. A natural wonder wrapped around your finger: Shimansky unveils iconic Table Mountain ring. The Table Mountain Ring, paying homage to South Africa’s most iconic natural wonder, was launched by luxury jewellery design house Shimansky at the beginning of December. when the valley is your oyster Pearl Mountain wine and olive farm, nestled in the northern outskirts of the town of Paarl is a family jewel known mostly to locals. Located on the slopes of Paarl Mountain, the farm overlooks the suture line between the Paarl and Wellington valleys, with vineyards and orchards running down and then climbing back up the Drakenstein Mountains across the valley. Owned and managed by the Retief family for 5 generations, a visit to the farm unveils a mix of developments and changes, made over the years that gives one a family welcome feeling. The plot was originally inhabited by a blacksmith in 1747, taking advantage of the water stream that crosses by. What is believed to be his original dwelling and workshop is today home to the wine tasting facility and the Blacksmith Restaurant respectively. The wine production of the farm’s yield started at 2004 and they provide both unwooded, easy drinking wines and wood barrel fermented premium wines. All the grapes are grown on the farm and all wines are created sourced from single block vineyards on the cool, east-facing slopes of the Paarl Mountain. They also cold press and bottle olive oil of which quantities vary every year, depending on the size of the crop. The tasting itself is a lovely alfresco experience. You will be seated on the open porch, beneath the old Oaks and savor the taste, smell and landscape all at once. The larger part of the old building is taken by the farm’s restaurant, The Blacksmith Kitchen. A cosy and relaxed bistro-style restaurant that serves a seasonal menu of local carnivore favourites and a great selection of vegetarian dishes too. The menu includes both personal dishes and platters to share and makes constant use of the large vegetable and herb garden at the back. The friendly staff and the eclectic furniture welcome a relaxed, long stay and the outdoor area is a great places for a party gatherings. The events and conference venue is located in the old packaging factory that received a very attentive transformation. The arrival outdoor lounge shares the same breathtaking views as the rest of the farm facilities while being secluded and enclosed with leafy walls on two sides. The venue building enjoys a high ceiling and is open to the panoramic view through its full length. It is a fusion of industrial and old farm charm with a great flow between in and out. The herb garden mentioned earlier, shares the slope shoulder with a beautiful, English style garden. Designer Crystal Birch partnered with Harry and Parisian Milliners in 2018 to bring the factory with her into the future. With her injection of energy, Crystal has brought a new outlook to Parisian Milliners in the context of a deflated local clothing and textile industry. Housed on the ground floor of a historic 19th century building on Bree Street, Alexandra Höjer Atelier is the home of Swedish clothing designer Alexandra Höjer’s eponymous clothing range. Alex produces limited edition womenswear that reflects her personal style – a little rock ‘n roll and a sense of modern nostalgia, mixed with grit and her innate femininity. Garments are locally manufactured with a focus on natural fibres and hand finished processes. The completion of CTICC2 has allowed the core team and the different service features they provide, to deepen and broaden their offerings to event planners in an instant. 16 years of experience in high profile hospitality like the exclusive back lounges of the world famous Cape Town International Jazz Festival are not out of your reach. On top of that, the longstanding commitment of the CTICC to sustainability was a pillar in the planning and building of its new extension, which led to solutions that maximizes and produces the full potential of the new development. With that said, CTICC launched and shared with the media, the new rooftop venue. This polished space enjoys an elevator connection from the ground floor entrance, a large surface of wooden deck and a high, clear glass banister to keep wind out but let the view in - the working harbour on one side and Table Mountain with its aerial cableway top station on the other. A large portion of the floor is covered by a pergola, diminishing the sun factor and allowing large conference organisers to consider including the space in their overall usage of the CTICC venues. In addition, the in-house abundance of equipment and props can turn the place into any kind of setting in your mind. FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. At the Iziko South African Museum. Matereality challenges traditional notions around what materials are suited to art-making. The exhibition highlights how contemporary artists from the African continent are using certain materials to explore different issues and ideas that give insight into their reality. Some artists employ industrial materials and methods, while others adopt craft skills, or put throwaway products of consumer society to new uses. The works on show provides a sense of some of the contemporary approaches explored.
