TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN THE CAPE WEST COAST 1. Go on South Africa’s road trip with the most twists: West Coast Way. The “twists” refer to six uniquely themed interlocking routes: Foodie, Culture, Wild, Tractor, Berg and Cape Way Routes. 2. Road tripping is hungry work! At Thali Thali Game Lodge on the Foodie Route, the enormous platters of Weskus cuisine attest to the region’s warm hospitality. Spend a happy hour or three browsing Bokkomlaan in Velddrif on the Berg Route. Visit artist Marina Clunie’s River Studio. Feast at Ek & Djy Vissery, and buy padkos at Pelican Post. the good vibe

There is a new player in the Cape Town hotel scene, Vīb Cape Town (pronounced ‘vibe’), offering an enhanced, trendy experience for the current sophisticated traveller. Vïb by Best Western is an international brand, aimed at the young urban traveller. It is brought to South Africa by Pan-African businessman and entrepreneur Muslim “Musi” Jaffer, who has been working with Best Western International since 2016 to introduce the Southern Hemisphere to the Vib concept. An environmentally conscious, 76 room hotel on Green Point Main Road. Overlooking the stadium and the park with the backdrop of the ocean on one end and signal hill slop on the other end. Entrance level starts with a minimal reception area with fully digitized check-in process and the seating area of the Eye Bar. Led by Culinary Operations Manager, Johann Breedt, who earned his bones under Raymond Blanc in London, the Eye Bar is open 7 days a week. Once morning service for hotel guests is completed, the Eye Bar is open for walk-ins with a few menus to choose from. The all-day menu is a South African and Eastern fusion with items like Daily Deli Sandwiches next to flavoursome Ramen (available from 12:00 to 22:00). The Small Plates menu (available from 11:00 to 23:00) is designed to be enjoyed next to your drink and is made of a selection of snacks, finger sandwiches, tapas, a mezze platter and some refined versions of favourite local sweets. Think Red Velvet and White Chocolate Fudge! For the busy, back-to-back appointments, business guests or out in town traveller, the bar is stocked with a selection of ‘grab and go’ beverage and food items, to keep you going throughout the day. In line with the

hotel brand requirements, all menus will include Vegan and Gluten Free options. We were invited to the first ever lunch service the hotel provided and can honestly testify to the fact that all plates returned empty to the kitchen. The Eye Bar is currently running a special for 12 Grilled Prawns and wine for R195, till the end of February 2021. Rooms are modern and minimalist, with each room’s WIFI having its own IP address to cater for secure business networks. Facilities even include a coffee machine in each room, making every room your temporary headquarters when in Cape Town. Another first in South Africa is Vīb Cape Town introducing a special, lower rate for local travellers throughout the year with no exemptions. All that is required is to provide your South African ID upon arrival. The roof allows 360° sights of the surrounding area and different seating arrangements. The plunge pool offers side right window to the ocean and downright windows to the bustling street below. Art works in the lobby, halls, corridors and rooms created by intuitive artist Shafina Jaffer, who also happens to be the owner of the Jaffer Modern art gallery on the penultimate floor of the hotel. Over the last few years she created a new series of paintings especially with Vïb Cape Town in mind. The art gallery occupies one of the hotels floors and is open to the public. Entitled ‘Gathering: A Community of Portraits’ the exhibition showcases the many faces of Africa with over 80 portraits. “This first exhibition aims to showcase a diverse outpouring of creativity,” says the show’s guest curator Margie Murgatroyd of Africa Nova. After seeking out artists from across the continent and looking beyond, to the African diaspora, Murgatroyd has selected works hailing from as far afield Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and right across South Africa, from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng. As a result, the new show makes for fascinating viewing. The works on the show are wide-ranging, but are linked by a central theme. According to gallery director Shafina Jaffer: “The theme refers to the deep human need to congregate and the desire to commune. It is about our diversity, cultures and common humanity.” Gathering opened to the public on 21 December 2020 and runs until 28 February 2021. Expect to see anything from painting to photography to sculpture. The artists featured include South African Masters such as Cecile Skotnes and Peter Clarke and contemporary artists such as Diane Victor, Colbert Mashile, Clare Menck, Koloki Nyamai, Ed Suter, Polly Alakija, Erise Silke and dozens more, including the gallery’s own director, who happens to be an artist herself. The architecture and interior design of the gallery is by well-known local architect, Robert Silke who designed the entire hotel. The spacious interior features globalstandard exhibition facilities that are combined with breathtaking sea views over Green Point towards Robben Island. With its emphasis on stand-out architecture and curatorial excellence, Jaffer Modern promises art collectors, artists and visitors alike a world-class gallery experience. The gallery is open 7 days a week, excluding public holidays. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00, and on Saturdays and Sundays, between 09:00 and 13:00. a real cape town gem attraction! An absolute must-do for people travelling in South Africa is to experience and explore the amazing range and diversity of our indigenous gemstones. One of the most popular and convenient places to discover this amazing beauty and variety is at the popular Scratch Patch outlets at the V&A Waterfront and Simon’s Town. These complexes collectively feature the Scratch Patch, Mineral World, Cave Golf, Rock Shop and the Topstones Factory. The Scratch Patch has become world-famous as a place where you can have loads of fun “scratching” for your favourite gemstones from hundreds of thousands of colourful tumble-polished stones that quite literally cover the floor. This is a truly original concept that has been copied in other parts of the world. According to how many gemstones you wish to take home, visitors have a choice from a small bag to a large cup container. At the Mineral World factory shops you can see an incredible range of gemstone items including stone carvings and other “art” pieces; high-quality “investment” gems (like Tanzanite and Diamonds); jewellery of all kinds; and lots of inexpensive gemstone items that make ideal take-home-gifts. The Cave Golf mini-golf courses are simply great! The V&A one is perennially popular and despite being relatively short and compact, the 18-hole layout is great to play and well-designed and challenging enough to be enjoyed even by regular golfers. The Simon’s Town 18-hole course is longer and it meanders down through a series of underground areas that feature rock walls, cave and mine obstacles, underground waterfalls, a UV light section, and fabulous mineral displays that are imbedded in the surrounding rock. At the Rock Shop you’ll discover a large range of beautiful mineral specimens, rough gemstone pieces and fossils that will bring out the geologist in you! The Topstones Factory is one of the world’s largest gemstone factories and here you can watch how gemstones are tumblepolished and crafted into many interesting and varied products. Both centres open Mon / Fri: 08h30 to 16:45. Weekends / Public Holidays: 09h00 to 17h30. www.scratchpatch.co.za.

a wait is over

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is back on track with an African feminine statement that echoes through generations and traditions. Presenting ‘Waiting for Gebane’, the first museum solo exhibition by artist Senzeni Marasela. The exhibition centres around Marasela’s fictional alter ego, Theodorah, whom the artist based on her mother. Marasela, who was born in Thokoza, South Africa, is an artist whose mediums include photography, video, prints, textiles and embroidery. Her work deals with history, memory, and personal narrative, and emphasises historical gaps and overlooked female figures. The exhibition background story starts with Theodorah’s husband, Gebane Hlongwane, which leaves her in the rural town of Mvenyane in the Eastern Cape to look for work in Johannesburg, he gives her an ishweshwe dress. In Xhosa culture, this garment signifies her married life. Theodorah holds onto this dress, wearing it every day to show her faithfulness to her husband. When he does not return after many years, Theodorah leaves home to search for him. The politics behind the dress fabric given to Theodorah by her husband is what the exhibitions is all about. It’s about women of the old traditions waiting under surveillance of their neighbours and newlywed family with no ability to proceed into the life they planned ahead. Being kept on hold for years, some for lifetimes, with obligations but without outcomes. The exhibitions is not about finally finding the men. It is to highlight and commemorate the wait. The salient wait and scarify of youth forced upon young women with the late Winnie Mandela, wife of Nelson Mandela RIP, being the most known of them all.

18

l Hello Cape Town January 2021

Working almost exclusively in red, Marasela traces this personal and collective experience of womanhood through Theodorah. She begins with her grandmother’s generation, documenting the period of ‘red dust’ from the early 1900s, when black daily life in South Africa was characterised by disruption and conflict. The red dust refers to a period of severe drought; kicked up by the movement of horses and people, in particular black men from the rural areas of South Africa, who were conscripted to fight in the Second World War or were sent to work in the gold mines of Johannesburg.

It can also be linked to the red mine hills of industrialised cities like Johannesburg, which serve as proof of their labour. In Marasela’s work, red is a bold marker of black life during these times, which has been historically misrepresented, omitted, or censored. Marasela uses the historical materials of ishweshwe and ethnic linen[1], as well as the process of photomontage, to produce fictionalised stories of the red dust period. This creates an extended series of images which realise and represent daily black life. For sixteen years, beginning in 2003, Marasela moved through her mother’s dresses as Theodorah. The first was a yellow dress, which she began to wear exclusively every day, to the point where her performed and actual identities became indistinguishable. Responding to its symbolic weight and the fabric as a document of history, her performance embodies and centralises the micro-histories of women in her family and the experience of many others. Marasela channels the biographies of women like Sarah Baartman and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, as well as those of fictional and mythological women like Miss Havisham (Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, 1861) and Penelope (Homer’s Odyssey, c. eighth century BCE), to illustrate the social disregard and abandonment of these women. By repeating the image of Theodora as a leitmotif, Marasela’s seeming obsession highlights how Theodora’s exhaustion was a ubiquitous experience for many women who awaited their husband’s return. At the same time, the journey is central to Marasela’s portraits, highlighting a will and determination which resists the idea of waiting as a postponement of life, and the erasure or invisibility of women. Theodorah does not wait for justice or liberation. Through her performed hyper visibility, she reclaims the ‘unrecoverable’ years. [1] Marasela’s decision to retain the use of the derogatory, racist word is to hold onto links to the cloth’s racialized and cultural history. Given to prisoners in the form of blankets, it was also used in domestic environments for curtaining and is used to make dresses worn in Xhosa cultural rituals. The cloth is also linked to mythological stories of Xhosa Kings. ‘Waiting for Gebane’ will be on view until 2 May 2021.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public programmes.

netcare 911

Netcare 911 emergency helicopter service always on a lifesaving mission ‘Angels of Mercy’ complete 10 000 missions and 15 years of service. Well-known and respected emergency medical services provider, Netcare 911, recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of its lifesaving helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS). “Not only has Netcare 911 marked this milestone in its service to the community but also that the HEMS, which is popularly known as the ‘Angels of Mercy’, has now flown more than 10 000 missions,” says David Stanton, head of clinical and education of Netcare 911. “These achievements bring home to us, the many critically injured or ill patients whose lives we helped to save, highlighting the immense contribution the service has made within our country over this time.” According to Stanton, the person who was assisted in the milestone 10 000th HEMS flight was a seriously injured gunshot victim from the Pretoria region, who required urgent transfer to, and medical intervention at, a hospital with an appropriately equipped trauma centre where he could receive the highly specialised medical care necessitated by his injuries. This was done successfully and the patient is recovering well in a Johannesburg hospital. Netcare 911 currently operates 24-hour HEMS bases in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. Its aircraft fleet includes Bell 407, Bell 222 and Bell 430 helicopters, all of which are fully configured to enable ICU level of care to all patients. Fitted with the latest in diagnostic, ventilation and monitoring equipment, the emergency medical crews are able to continue providing care at an ICU level throughout the patient’s transfer to hospital.

Stanton says that with a dedicated team of experienced pilots and emergency care practitioners, the HEMS helicopters are deployed to reach the scene of an emergency in the shortest possible time to provide the highest level of pre-hospital emergency care to patients, thereby giving them the best possible chance at recovery. These may include patients who have been seriously injured in road or other accidents, or who have had a life-threatening medical emergency such as a stroke or heart attack. “Having HEMS as an integral part of our nationwide emergency medical service means that we can swiftly reach patients in metropolitan and outlying areas, including the most remote locations. In cities, for example, traffic is often gridlocked and a helicopter can reach a critically injured patient much quicker than a response car or an ambulance to commence life-saving treatment. Once patients are stabilised the helicopter can fly them to the most appropriate hospital very quickly for further specialised care,” explains Stanton. In addition to being on standby for medical emergencies, the HEMS air ambulances are also used to expedite the safe transfer of critically ill adults and infants between hospitals for specifically required treatment. With a strong focus on clinical excellence, the performance of teams is measured on multiple factors, including response and scene times and pain management. Cases are reviewed and discussed regularly to ensure that patients receive the best and safest care at all times. “The Netcare 911 HEMS, which has been operational since 2005, assists us to reach more South Africans in their time of greatest need and there is no doubt that it has saved many thousands of lives. Flying with experienced medical crews, the best medical equipment available, supported by Netcare 911’s world-class national emergency operations centre, and with oversight from a team of medical specialists, the service forms an integral part of Netcare 911’s vision of delivering the best and safest care to the people of South Africa,” he adds. Netcare’s general manager: emergency, trauma, transplant and CSI, Mande Toubkin, congratulated the Netcare 911 HEMS team on their 15th anniversary and achieving its “remarkable milestone” of 10 000 missions, and says it has been shown internationally, that taking severely injured patients to an appropriately accredited trauma centre, and doing so in the shortest possible time, improves medical outcomes. According to Toubkin, one of the benefits of having the Netcare 911 HEMS teams as part of the broader Netcare Group, is that it ensures that fully integrated, continuous care can be provided from the scene of an emergency to an appropriate hospital and emergency department. This supports Netcare’s vision of providing an inclusive multi-disciplinary emergency and trauma system across the Group’s pre-hospital emergency services, hospital emergency departments and hospitals that can provide each patient with the best and safest care aligned to their medical needs. “The Netcare Group’s resources and support are always available to the Netcare 911 HEMS service. This makes it possible for us to provide the highest levels of medical services to patients whether on the scene of the emergency, including on-site surgical interventions and complex inter-hospital transfers when required. The latter has included transfers with the ECMO [extracorporeal membrane oxygenation] life-support system, explains Toubkin.” “Netcare 911’s ’Angels of Mercy’ have proved to be a most valuable lifeline to patients in their time of greatest need over the past decade and a half. We look forward to being of service to South Africans for many more years to come,” concludes Stanton. Hello Cape Town January 2021 l

table mountain is set up to welcome you safely

While celebrating the festive season might look a little different this year, there are still plenty of places for you to explore in South Africa. From parks to seaside towns and the unique cultural beat of our cities, celebrating everything local is the way to go. For those heading down to the Cape coast, make sure that you add a visit to the top of Table Mountain to your bucket list. Rated as the leading tourist attraction in Africa, this iconic landmark boasts the best views of the city’s skyline. With its rich biodiversity, nature enthusiasts and bird lovers (known as twitchers) can experience more than 23 000 different species of plants and over 900 types of birds alone in the Table Mountain area. For those with a spirit of adventure, visitors are able to abseil off its cliffs or hike up one of its many picturesque trails. “With the summer days and a greater focus on staying healthy, now is the perfect time for people to explore the outdoors. Not only does this have numerous health benefits, but it’s also a great way to spend time with family and friends, all while being able to maintain social distancing,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC). Famed for carrying visitors in a 360-degree rotating steel-and-glass bubble, the Table Mountain Cableway is the greatest way to get to the top of South Africa’s New7Wonder of Nature. One of the best ways to enjoy the breath-taking views with family and friends is with a glass of wine in hand and a slice of the famous milk tart on offer at the top station of the cableway. This year TMACC is going cashless, with tickets only available for purchase online via Webtickets. Visitors can connect to the

free Wi-Fi available at the lower station to buy their tickets on arrival to purchase tickets. But it is recommended to plan ahead by booking in advance. Top tips for your visit to the Table Mountain: • With unpredictable weather and high winds during December, visitors are encouraged to visit the TMACC website ahead of their visit to determine whether the cableway will be open on the day • The cableway will operate between 08:00 and 21:00 from Monday to Sunday from 16 December 2020 until 31 January 2021. • There is high demand for parking during peak season, so visitors are encouraged to use public transport, or the hop-on hop-off city sightseeing bus where possible. • Visitors wanting to learn more about Table Mountain can download free audio tours using their mobile. To download the app, visit https://bit.ly/3mDvsTR • Pack a small bag with essential items such as water to stay hydrated in the summer heat and sunscreen and a hat, as well as a jacket in case the weather turns. • For those wishing to enjoy one of the many hiking trails on offer, weather-related hazards such as the heat and wind can catch visitors off guard if they are unprepared, and uneven pathways and hiking trails could lead to people stumbling and falling. Not to mention that five of the most dangerous species of snakes are found in the vicinity. • Take extra care when exploring the mountain by planning your route, sticking to the designated paths and always walking with an experienced hiking guide. • To help protect visitors to the mountain, high-tech CCTV cameras are fixed at strategic locations across the park and on the trails to help cast a wider security net over Table Mountain. These are monitored by operators around the clock, while SANParks personnel will be deployed to respond to any incidents as required. Visitors are always encouraged to be vigilant and guard against any criminal behaviour. TMACC is taking all health and safety protocols seriously, which includes adhering to social distancing and all Covid-19 regulations. This will mean that a maximum of 40 people, including the cabin master, will be allowed in the cable car.
