a road trip out of cape town
Sir Lowry’s Pass
A circular journey that will take you through 4 wine producing regions in one day with changing scenery with each passing hour and a plethora of stopping points to accommodate any craving or any social setting? On main roads? Crossing 3 mountain passes? Let’s show you how: You already know that Cape Town is blessed to be surrounded by a collection of wine routes, each with unique landscapes. The thing is, we usually pinpoint one destination in advance, driving to it and back. New social distancing rules requires you to mostly be in the lap of known company. This makes your vehicle the capsule of safety and luckily, this capsule has wheels. We suggest you start driving on the N2, taking off to the R310 towards Stellenbosch. Pass the town and continue to Helshoogte Pass. You’ll cross between the Simonsberg Ridge and the Hottentots-Holland range, with open views all the way to Table Mountain. You than start descending towards the R45. After you pass the village of Pniel, you’ll exit the Stellenbosch Wine Route, and taking a right at the T-junction, begin your drive through the Franschhoek Wine Route.

l Hello Cape Town July 2020
Sir Lowry’s Pass
The entire road, from Allée Bleue Wine Estate at the bottom, to La Petite Ferme on top of the valley, is dotted with wineries, restaurants and delis. Continuing on this road, you’ll reach the Franschhoek Pass. The pass was once known as Olifantshoek (“Elephants Corner’), after the now mythical herds of elephant which roamed these valleys and mountains. This long, steep and dramatic pass, with its variety of scenery was South Africa’s first properly engineered road. On the other side of the pass, you’ll drive through Theewaters Nature Reserve, all the way to the big dam that is Cape Town’s main drinking water source. While this part of the road gives you vistas over the Overberg Wine Route and mountain range, you will take a right turn on the R321 towards Grabouw and into the Elgin Wine Route. This area, which grew mainly orchards in the past, now enjoys a reputation for producing cold climate, high altitude crisp wines. Once you reach Grabouw, you connect back to the N2, starting your drive back towards Cape Town. This part of the road will give you the most dramatic of the 3 mountain passes for the day: Sir Lowry’s Pass. It crosses the Hottentots-Holland mountain range between Elgin Valley Somerset West at the bottom, on the main national road between Cape Town and the Garden Route. A railway line also crosses the mountain range at this point.
Franschhoek Pass
The summit of the pass is at 920 m. There is a viewpoint at the summit and this point is also used as a paragliding launch point. Baboons are often seen in this area. Driving at a leisurely speed will allow you to finish the drive in 4.5-5 hours, therefor we suggest you plan most of your stops in advance, check opening hours and strongly consider pre-booking or ordering if you would like to visit a wine farm or a restaurant en route. It is also advisable that you allocate some time for unexpected surprises like farm stall shopping, village walks or an observation break, and there are plenty of opportunities for these along the road.

feeding our wildlife
One of the major fallouts of the South African lockdown and the tourism stand still, is the total stop of revenue earning by game reserves and wildlife sanctuaries all across our country. On the other hand, private safari owners still have to feed rhinos, elephants, giraffes, lions and springboks, cheetahs and hippos. We are not talking about zoos or national parks owned by the state. We are talking about all the 100’s of private initiatives that have made the preservation of African wildlife conservation their business and livelihood. Elephants eat between 149 and 169 kg (330-375 lb. or as much as 600 pounds) per day. In captivity, male lions can eat 10 kg of meat a feed, while females can eat 6–8 kg. We can go on and write the amount for each species but you’ve got the idea. Saving Private Rhino is training game rangers and security teams in pro and reactive anti-poaching tactics. They also offer a rapid rhino response team which includes veterinarians in case of an attack. Panthera Africa is an environmentally friendly sanctuary for any captive bred big cats, where they will be protected and prosper for the rest of their lives. They have incredible commitment and love for the big cats in their care. HERD Elephant Orphanage came to be as a result of increasing numbers of poaching of elephant mothers as well as man

vs. elephant land conflict. They built a dedicated elephant orphanage to provide a unique adoptive family structure for baby elephants in need. The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is located in the greater Barberton Nature Reserve which incorporates Mountainlands Game Reserve, situated in the beautiful heartland of Mpumalanga. They aim to secure a viable free ranging African White and Black Rhinoceros population in Barberton, the nucleus population for future generations of rhino. The Cheetah Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre wishes t o rehabilitate cheetahs while enabling these graceful creatures to live in their natural environment. The programmes involve pairing up unrelated cheetahs in an effort to retain the widest possible range of genes in the cheetah gene pool. World of Birds is the largest bird park in Africa and one of the few large bird parks in the world. Over 3 000 birds (and small animals) of 400 different species are uniquely presented in more than 100 spacious landscaped walkthrough aviaries. World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary offers this service for free to the greater Cape Town area and have been doing this for the past 40 years. Unfortunately they are no longer able to do this on their own and are appealing to the public for support. Any of the mentioned organisations (there are many more) will appreciate any once-off or standing order donations. They all look forward to welcoming visitors in the foreseeable future, share their love of wildlife and their conservation achievements. Hello Cape Town July 2020 l

8 free things to do in cape town There is a good chance you are visiting Cape Town to conduct business. Still, you are now in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Don’t let this opportunity to explore pass by you. Under current restrictions and regulations you can self-explore some of the city’s signature natural and architectural icons. It is strongly advised to do so as part of a couple or threesome. VIBRANT BO KAAP The Bo-Kaap is situated at the top end of the CBD at the foot of Signal Hill. See the colourful houses, smell the spices and hear a call to prayers of the local mosque. This part of Cape Town is a unique, real gem and you will totally fall in love with it.
SOUTH AFRICA OLDEST GARDEN Company’s Garden, an oasis right in the center of the city is a favourite for both locals and tourists. The site is important historically, and is a thriving urban space where buskers strum guitars while office workers sun themselves over lunch hour.
THE GOLDEN MILE Sea Point Promenade is where all walks of life meet. This is one of Cape Town’s most lively attractions, bringing together cyclists, dog-walkers, joggers, skaters, amblers, and everyone in between. The Prom, as locals call it, starts at Mouille Point near the Waterfront, and runs along the water’s edge through Sea Point.

HIKING TABLE MOUNTAIN: There are few experiences to beat walking on Table Mountain or elsewhere in the Table Mountain National Park. Use one of the recommended routes to enjoy the wonders the park has to offer. Look for The 5 most popular hiking routes on the South African National Parks (SANParks) website or join a local group like Sunday Sunset Hike.
STROLL AROUND THE V&A WATERFRONT This one of a kind harbour edge attraction is filled with eye catching charms. The Nobel Square, performing Buskers, Old Port Captain’s Building, Clock Tower, the Silo District or Battery Park to name a few. Just put on your walking shoes.
ENJOY A MAGNIFICENT SUNSET This everyday occurrence is never taken lightly by locals. We document it, we take pictures, we share on social and we try to catch as many as possible of this magical moment. And we get a different theme to this daily show as seasons pass. On sea level at the promenade or Camps Bay, on a few spots along Kloof or Victoria Roads, on the slop of Signal Hill or from your sea facing hotel room. Take this time to indulge.
TAKE THE CONSTANTIA ALPHEN TRAIL The trail winds along the Diep River to the Constantiaberg Mountain and in places allows one to walk on either side of the river, with a number of bridge crossings. It’s a beautiful walk filled with lush grass, trees, beautiful skies and the Le Sueur Meadow on the far end of the walk towards Hohenort. Take a selfie or the perfect Table Mountain postcard picture along Blouberg’s Otto du Plessis Drive (M14): Uninterrupted view of the iconic Table Mountain across the bay just waits for you to pose. It’s far enough to capture the full panorama and still only 15 minutes’ drive from the city center. You can get there using MyCiti bus with a 1 day pass. Hello Cape Town July 2020 l

Many in the Cape Winelands put their creativity and food knowledge to keep the Winelands cuisine alive. You can now have food and wine delivered to your door. If it’s your home, office or hotel room, estates and restaurants in the Cape Winelands have reinvented themselves and packed their culinary abilities in packages to go.
Fine dining, tasty frozen meals delivered straight to your door from De Grendel Wine estate in Durbanville Wine Valley. Heat & Eat meals are also available for collection only. They also have a range of cakes available, as well as some of their artisan loaves, cold meats, preserves, cheese, flour, freshly brewed soft drinks and if you collect on a Thursday, you’ll also find a flower market.
Gåte at Quoin Rock in Stellenbosch was one of the first wine estates to offer their fine dining experience in a delivery box. The Gåte at Home menu changes weekly and is a 3-course experience, each with a unique international influence. Gåte delivers once a week, on a Friday, to Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and the Cape Town City Bowl. FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tiptop condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller, to commerce, to international affairs, and to the public’s health. So, given there are some things we can’t change about air travel, there are things we can do to protect our health and ensure our comfort while flying as well as after the flight.

new flying rules Cape Town International Airport is ready to welcome business travel. What should you know and bring. Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) management took all necessary measures to re-open the airport and ensure the safety of those working at the airport, as well as the business professionals travelling on the flights. With the move to Alert Level 3 on the 1 June 2020, which allows business travellers to take to the skies once more, it is important that everyone adheres to the critical safety measures to stop the spread of Covid-19 while travelling. CTIA General Manager, Deon Cloete, highlighted the important steps taken to ensure operational readiness. Particularly highlighting that security points are traditionally high touch points, and with this in mind, extra actions were taken to protect passengers and airport staff, there is a concerted drive to limit contact with the passenger. As a result, passengers are requested to: •
Scan their own boarding passes
•
Place all of their loose items in their hand luggage
•
Re-enter the queue should they trigger the metal detector
•
Only laptops will be allowed in trays
Deon Cloete said, “As part of the easing of restrictions, Cape Town International Airport will play an important role in rebuilding the travel and tourism economy. It will take a huge effort from everyone, on and off airport to get things going. We recognise the importance of regaining passenger trust by protecting their health and wellness, and that of our staff and all visitors to the airport. We are going to be relying on passengers to comply and to support the new rules.” While limited air travel will be permitted, with restrictions on the number of flights per day, the increase in economic activity in sectors that are permitted to resume operations is welcomed. At this stage, no scheduled international commercial flights will be processed, however we will continue to process international repatriation flights. While we do not anticipate large volumes at this stage, an easy start up allows us to test our new ways of working.” For those wanting to travel for business it is important that you have the necessary permission to travel, before even buying a ticket. Business travellers will need to carry a letter on a company letterhead, signed by a manager, as well as a completed employer permit form. Any traveller who fails to produce the required documents will not be permitted to fly. Travellers should also arrive at airports at least two hours in advance to familiarise themselves with the new safety procedures, for example, at some airports access points and terminal entrance points may be reduced. Health and safety measures such as temperature screening may also impact on check-in and boarding time. And of course, a mask must be worn at all times.

track cape town on your screen
Since air traffic is still limited we invite you to see our city through the lens of the best action thriller released at the end of 2019. M-Net’s local adaptation of Deon Meyer’s 2011 novel ‘Trackers’ became the channel’s biggest hit of the year. Trackers beat even the colossal likes of Game Of Thrones, Big Little Lies and the sensational nuclear meltdown drama Chernobyl. It had the local talent and the international funding to go all-out to create an action extravaganza that explodes onto the screen. Trackers is a hold-onto-your-pants thriller that pays off in spades for observant viewers. The show casts a wide net at the start of the season, then reels it in over five episodes, bringing everything together towards the end in a series of unexpected connections. That’s thanks to how author Deon Meyer wrote the book originally, when he found himself unable to choose between three different storylines. “With Trackers, I thought why not push the envelope in terms of structure; why not try tell all three stories and see if you can still hold the suspense and still keep the reader gripped,” says Deon. Trackers is available on Showmax and Netflix.
