In the Winelands There are hundreds of wine estates in the Cape Winelands, offering event facilities with stunning locations and vineyard views. It requires an additional effort to combine it all and achieve the extraordinary. Vrede en Lust, on the border of Franschhoek and Paarl wine routes is one of such. The old Manor House and a line of historic cottages were delicately restored to perfection and glamour. They are joined by a collection of newly built accommodation and formal gardens, with the historic cellar restored to be the celebration venue.

Your Own Private Fairy Tale After taking over the Quoin Rock Wine Estate in Stellenbosch a few years ago, the new owners re-invented this property. The old Manor House with its adjacent buildings- stables and staff rooms, form a restored complex brought to a pristine colonial glamour. It is rented only as a whole and doesn’t come short of any luxury you could possibly imagine.

The newer front of the estate is a modern glass, double storey celling space, wrapped with landscapes and a sculpture garden to match. The innovative, fine dining restaurant compliments the entire offering.
Picture Perfect Lagoon Beach Hotel, a 10 minute drive out of the city, just across the bay, enjoys the perfect backdrop: the full panoramic view of Table Mountain and the city center. knysna oyster festival goes virtual
After the previous suspension announcement, festival organizers, Visit Knysna, found an innovative path to deliver the 2020 edition of Knysna Oyster Festival that will take place from 27 June until 4 July 2020. Despite the Management Committee’s initial announcement in April to postpone the festival until 2021, it was decided that there is nothing stopping the popular festival from re-convening online, allowing for a virtual festival to take place. “Planning is underway and we would like to encourage our local community to take this opportunity to be a part of this year’s first Virtual Knysna Oyster Festival. The main components of the programme will include sporting events and activities, all in virtual formats. The destination promotion of the greater Knysna area will form the backbone of the activation, focusing on sport, fitness, leisure, food, arts, the community and culture that we have to offer”, said Visit Knysna’s General Manager, Colleen Durant. The annual anchor events, which include the Knysna Cycle Tour and Knysna Forest Marathon, are currently planning the formats that they will roll out participation for the event, details will be published once confirmed. For more information, please visit www.KnysnaOysterFestival.co.za – the website is updated regularly with the latest information.

cape town marathon launches virtual race
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon race organisers are adding a virtual version of the iconic city marathon to its existing bouquet of events. The Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon will offer an interactive and immersive race experience for athletes across the globe by superimposing the race route on top of streets, open spaces and gardens, complete with live tracking, distance markers, and push messages with information about key landmarks as they are passed. The creation of this virtual race will allow athletes to compete in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on 18 October from anywhere in the world, starting at 06:30 local time, wherever they are. The race will be available through the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon app, an integrated digital platform that will launch in the coming weeks. “We are excited to introduce this digital offering. The app will track participants as if they are running the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon route - whether they find themselves in New York, Naples or Knysna - making this a virtual race like no other. I am certain that having a race on the horizon will give athletes a tangible goal to work towards, and the extra motivation needed to maintain their training within the parameters of the lockdown levels they may find themselves in,” said Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Chairman, Francois Pienaar. As it is still too early to predict whether the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will be staged in its original format on 18 October, the race organisers remain in close contact with Athletics South Africa and all relevant roleplayers as the months progress. “While this is a significant challenge, it’s also the perfect time to be innovative, which is why we have reached out to and gained the support from our sponsors, partners and stakeholders to bring the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon to our global marathon family, no matter where they are,” added Pienaar. Western Province Athletics President, Jakes Jacobs, has called the introduction of the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon an

example of how race organisers can find creative solutions to the challenges they may face. “In this uncertain time, we believe the way forward is to be responsible and prioritise the safety of all participants and stakeholders. This is a great example of how races can step up to the next level.” The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, has hailed the race organisers for their responsiveness to change in the face of adversity. “Cape Town is a year-round favourite tourism and sporting destination, and we are keenly aware of the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has on these industries in 2020. I therefore commend the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon organisers for thinking outside the box. The world may not be able to come to the Mother City this year, but this Virtual Race has a unique opportunity to take Cape Town to the world!” While the 5km and 10km Peace Runs will also be presented in Virtual Race format on 17 and 18 October respectively, there will not be a Virtual Race option for the 2020 Trail Runs. Entries for the Virtual Race have opened via Webtickets. Athletes who have already entered the 2020 race will be able to transfer to the Virtual Race from June. Entrants will receive an official race number, and all finishers will receive a digital medal and certificate. “Extraordinary circumstances require extraordinary measures. The Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon will provide athletes the opportunity to train, remain competitive, and stay connected to the greater running community,” noted Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Race Director, Renée Jordaan. “What better way to illustrate our solidarity than by participating in a virtual race that brings Cape Town to your doorstep. This will truly be a race like no other.” The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was recently awarded the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label Status for the fourth consecutive year – the only marathon on the African continent and one of only a select group of marathons in the world to have this status. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that continues to sweep across the globe, and the postponement of the Olympic Games, all Gold Label Status races will retain their status for 2020 and 2021. With a new, mandatory accessory coming to our daily lives recently, South African designers are intrigued and inspired to use the facial protection mask to add a statement and lighten the obligatory. Many local designers took this turn just because it allowed them to re-open their local sewing workshop at an early stage and start generating income in a time of great uncertainty. But the outcomes? Oh boy, you can definitely recognise the trend setters. Whimsical Collection, headed by Desiree Smit, known for her fun, colourful and artistic drawings of wildlife. She uses a combination of realistic images and vivid colours to achieve an eye catching, fun statement on daily objects. You can now choose a matching print for your face mask, a laptop or a toiletries bag, bringing South African safari into every room you step in. Another fun item is the Wild Cupped Masks. A fun mask to lift your spirits. A true test of who can smile with their eyes. Find your inner hippo or leopard and other wild animals and share a smile with a stranger. Peppertree Bags, known for their quality fabric products, sell beautifully stitched face masks with geometric prints. If you like to set or follow a graphic theme with your overall apparel, check their offers. The face masks they make, for both men and women, match their range of daily hand and business bags.

‘Geo by George’ by South African designer, George Stander, which usually offers women stylish and elegant everyday wear, added a line of masks made with elegant fabrics to complement his current clothing line. Habits Fashion, a local favourite by Jenny le Roux, offer fabric masks manufactured locally by their factory, using fabric off-cuts that may otherwise end up in landfills. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of each mask will go to local NPO (Non-Profit Organisations), change makers who are making a difference to those in need. Ruff Tang designers Bridget Pickering and Ludwig Bausch, the local queen and king of everything bling, created a range of Sequins Masks. The fashion duo that empowers women of every size and curve in any of their collections, looked for a way to support their team by restarting their business with what was allowed. “Once the government started to allow our industry to open up with mask making, we had staff to pay, an incredible team of breadwinners who needed to support their families and boxes of sequins off cuts... so we ‘work shopped’ the idea, a term we use when brainstorming, designed as per the Department of Health spec and garnished the outer layer with sparkles” they told IOL.co.za. All face masks are available to purchase online.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome (the possibility of developing a deep vein thrombosis), international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tiptop condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller, to commerce, to international affairs, and to the public’s health. So, given there are some things we can’t change about air travel, there are things we can do to protect our health and ensure our comfort while flying as well as after the flight.

cape town pass points
Kloof Nek
Mountain Pass - a point of awe and a place of extreme beauty, set for far journeys, holidays and road trips. This is the reality for most urbanists and world population, with the exclusion of Capetonians. Going over a mountain pass or two is a daily experience for locals. This is because our city wraps the iconic Table Mountain and it is also one of the reasons that drives Cape Town to be considered as one of the most beautiful cities to live in, globally. Each one of the 3 passes in our metropole is more than just a passage. They are starting points to hikes and trails and form a 3-dimensional window to different scenery.
Kloof Nek Pass Constantia Nek Suikerbossie Ou Kaapse Weg Helshoogte Stellenbosch Franschhoek Pass Sir Lowrys Pass
Kloof Nek pass on the top of Kloof Nek Road, connects the city centre with Camps Bay through the obvious neck between Table Mountain and Lions Head. It was built in 1848 when Kloof Nek was used primarily as a lookout post for soldiers and the road was used as a supply route to Camps Bay.

The pass is a six way junction. In addition to the two already mentioned, the pass is the getaway point to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Signal Hill lookout balcony over the city and harbour with its breathtaking sunsets, the point of reach to climbing Lion’s Head and starting point to hikes at The Glen - the forest above Camps Bay on the slope of Lion’s Head –
and toward the 12 Apostles, known as the Pipe Track. Driving through Camps Bay, at the bottom of 12 Apostles, just following the road along the shoreline, towards Hout Bay, will get you to Suikerbossie. Coming from the city side and getting to Suikerbossie pass with a car is a brief episode but when doing so, slow down a little and take a second look over this steep road that rolls into the quiet suburb. This road is a forceful climb for athletes from all over the world. It is the breaking and making point for the yearly riders of the 108 km Cape Town Cycle Tour. After leaving the city centre in the early hours of the morning, cyclists ride to the east side of Table Mountain, going south all the way to Simon’s Town and start the ride back to the city along Chapman’s Peak Drive, up comes Suikerbossie – an almost 3 km nonstop climb - the part of the race that everyone knows that when concurred, the 15km left is just a breeze.
Suikerbossie
Suikerbossie is also a starting point for 5 hiking routes. Constantia Nek is a fairly long suburban pass linking Hout Bay in the west with Constantia on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. It traverses some of the most beautiful woodlands in the Cape and passes many exclusive wine and equine estates. At the summit at Constantia Nek there are some historical buildings and a timeless restaurant considered to be the oldest restaurant in South Africa. The old Constantia Main Road was a wagon trail in the early days of Cape Town with overnight stopping and supply points. One of them is the current Eagles’ Nest boutique wine estate.
Constantia Nek
This estate used to be an orchard farm for fresh product stock and today is an award-winning winery, and part of the Constantia Wine Route. Rhodes Avenue, originating in the Nek is a picturesque drive that runs through the forest all the way to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Constantia Nek
The Nek area is a starting point for about 7 mountain trails that provides a panoramic view over the Cape Flats all the way to the Western slope of the Stellenbosch wine route. Visiting all 3 passes while in Cape Town is a given matter when you take the City Sightseeing Mini Peninsula tour. It gives a hop-on hop-off option that allows to explore both the city and its surrounds at your own pace and even if you’ve done one of the bus tours before, with 27 attractions and points of interest along the tour, there must be a good reason to take a second drive. l Hello Cape Town June 2020
“We’re concerned about the devastating impact the reduction of travel and tourism is having on the revenue generated for conservation agencies. This could result in job losses and more broadly the livelihoods of people working in and living around protected areas. It also impacts the operations in the wilderness areas”, says Carel Verhoef wildlife guide and host of the Serengeti Show Live. “It does however, provide an opportunity to showcase the animals in their natural habitat, undisturbed by vehicles and tourists, in what could be the most spectacular wildlife viewing season in recent years. As the only people in the Serengeti National Park, we have a unique chance to capture and share this extraordinary park to a wider audience and to remind you to return to Tanzania as soon as possible”. 17.2% of GDP in Tanzania is generated by tourism and the National Parks rely heavily on income generated from the tourism sector. Parks struggle to operate with reduced revenue and the wildlife economy is bound to be affected - including protecting biodiversity from illegal bushmeat harvesting which may rise as poverty increases and food becomes scarcer. For those dreaming of the world and its wonders during lockdown, the Serengeti Show Live team in conjunction with Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) has set out on a mission to bring positive news, beautiful views, natural spaces and the wildlife of Africa to screens across the world. Their mission is to entertain all wildlife and safari lovers during Covid-19. Stand-alone episodes with a narrative, take the viewer on a wildlife journey, teaching the audience about the natural world. TTB, in collaboration with Tanzania National Parks and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority have partnered with the Serengeti Show Live team to bring a highly visual wildlife episodes to the world to entertain and educate the viewers. The show features unique scenes from the Serengeti National Park, some emotional journeys and what takes place behind the scenes. Each show will feature game drives with wildlife sightings, great migration updates and interesting, facts about Tanzania and life in the bush. The Kids Corner is a fun and interactive segment to entertain the little ones, who stand to win a family holiday, and in doing so hopefully create a generation of naturalists and conservations to care for our planet. The Serengeti Show Live can be viewed on https:// serengetishowlive.com/ with 3 episodes broadcast on You Tube every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5pm East Africa Time (GMT +3 hours) in a 30 part series.
