aquila collection celebrates digitally during lockdown

While the country - and indeed the world - is fighting this global COVID19 pandemic, the Aquila Collection had reason to celebrate during these trying times with the birth of new wildlife and a digitally observed birth of a child of one of the dedicated Anti-Poaching Unit members. Following the announcement from the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, that in an effort to #FlattenTheCurve and to #StopTheSpread, we are in lockdown for a period of 35 days, Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa, and Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve - both just outside of Cape Town - temporarily closed its doors. With the Big 5 and other wildlife on both reserves, the Anti-Poaching Teams continue their dedicated service, while the conservation teams ensure that the health and wellbeing of the animals are top priority. While South Africa - and indeed the world - fights the #COVID19 pandemic, the Aquila Collection had a few light moments of celebration during the first 6 days of the South African lockdown. Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa, just under two hours from Cape Town, had confirmation from the Anti-Poaching Units that they observed the birth of a baby hippo at the property. Similarly, the conservation teams at Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve notified head office that they spotted a beautiful baby giraffe and new born buffalo. 6 days after we received the news from Aquila Collection, a baby Rhino was spotted in the early hours of the morning at Inverdoorn. Another blessed arrival. While this is most certainly news to celebrate during these trying times, Aquilaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remote teams furthermore had a surprise opportunity to celebrate the birth of a new human being. A dedicated member of the Anti-Poaching Unit tuned in digitally to witness the birth of his child while he was on duty out in the veld. The management and fellow staff congratulated him and his wife on the birth of their child and cannot thank him enough for his dedicated service to the wellbeing and safety of our endangered species. The conservation teams report that all wildlife are thriving and in good health. Management further notes that the teams in lockdown on the properties are healthy and in good spirits. While guests are prohibited from visiting the reserves just outside of Cape Town, the Aquila Collection marketing office encourages people to follow the social media pages of both Aquila and Inverdoorn to be notified of any further updates during lockdown. *FYI: all wildlife at Aquila Safaris are under electronic surveillance with special attention to rhinos and their horns.

So here’s the thing… The National Arts Festival 2020 won’t be cancelled, but it will be different. The team at the National Arts Festival have been worrying, thinking, worrying, arguing and thinking some more about what to do about the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe in relation to South Africa’s very special annual Festival. THIS OUR REALITY: Based on the ban on major events they can’t allow more than 100 people to congregate anywhere. Due to the travel ban and recommendations with regard to domestic travel and the use of public transport, artists and visitors can’t get to Makhanda and performances can’t get to them. The team doesn’t want to contribute to the spread of the virus and fully understand that this is a time for isolation.

That’s not what they do. They create experiences and celebrate the arts. So, after more thinking, listening, reading, arguing and talking, they’ve come up with a plan…. They’ve decided to do

something bold and something they have never done before. From 25 June to 5 July 2020, the National Arts Festival will be going completely virtual for the full 11 days of amazement. Going virtual will mean that the Festival can continue to support artists and the arts in 2020, by presenting work within a digital space. This way they can share some magic and hope with those who may still be confined to their homes. An opportunity to connect when we are being asked to distance ourselves from one another.

Artists depend on festivals like this to generate an income through selling tickets, getting their work seen and talked about locally and internationally and networking with their peers. Rather than cancel, they aim to create a new opportunity for artists and audiences alike to celebrate the arts, and to create an accessible platform for artists to share their work. Millions of people across South Africa and the world will be cut off from each other in completely unprecedented ways: unable to go pray, school or work, or socialise outside of their immediate family. This is absolutely the responsible thing to do to contain the uncontrolled spread of COVID-19, but as social beings, it is going to chip away a little bit of our souls every day that the bans are enforced. Why make the decision now and not wait? National Arts Festival leaders have just over 100 days to the opening day. The reality is that they can’t ask artists to prepare for a festival that may or may not go ahead; they can’t ask supporters to make their plans, book their accommodation and transport, without the certainty that it will happen; and they can’t ask service providers to stand at the ready if it may all come to nothing.

For Makhanda and the Eastern Cape, this is going to be a really hard year and management are fully aware of the enormous impact that COVID-19 will have on our economic stability. FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. This exhibition shows that music was integral to events such as the Sharpeville massacre and other turning points in our history. Through its focus on freedom songs the exhibition tells the story of the various organisations, events and people who were involved in the struggle for an end to apartheid.

Iziko Museums of South Africa celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with the online launch of The Adventures of Mbali – Iziko’s Super Explorer; a comic book strip featuring Mbali – a young explorer set on combatting climate change – and created by Karoo and Invertebrate Palaeontology interns at Iziko Museums: Louis Jonk, Devonne Kortje and Mogammad Hendricks. The comic book strip’s lead character, Mbali, tackles the environmental and climate issues facing us today, and educates us about the natural world.

Matereality presents a survey of emerging and established artists in the 21st century who use particular media in deliberate, surprising and innovative ways. While focused primarily on South African art, it also highlights some examples from the rest of the continent. Dr William Fehr (1892 – 1968) was a Cape Town based businessman with a passion for collecting historical art and objects. The collection went on public display at the Castle during the 1950s, and portrays aspects of South Africa’s painful colonial past – including maps, portraits, and depictions of historical events, animals and flowers.

The São José represents the first known shipwreck with enslaved Africans on board to be identified, studied and excavated. This exhibition, Unshackled History: the Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794, tells the story of the São José’s identification, the innumerable processes it took to retrieve her belongings from the ocean floor, and, most importantly, of her “human cargo” – the people who were violently uprooted from their homes in Mozambique. Sailing from Mozambique in December 1794 with a cargo of more than 400 enslaved persons, the São José was en route to Brazil when she encountered rough seas near Clifton and tragically wrecked.
