Hello Cape Town November 2019
South Africa’s biggest pop-up treasure trove of handcrafted creativity began in a few kamers (rooms) of a Stellenbosch house in 2003. From the start, KAMERS/Makers has been about sharing and supporting. With a historical focus on female SA entrepreneurs in an era where retail was a challenge for women, they’ve always valued sisterhood and family in our team and have worked tirelessly to offer support ‘as a family’ to all our suppliers. A KAMERS/Makers show is most certainly a GENTLE experience – a free-flowing celebration of things fresh and unique, of handmade artistry and face-to-face encounters with those who produce it. Fine food and music in stunning locations complete the magic.

galileo open air cinema season 8
A firm seasonal favourite in Cape Town, The Galileo Open Air Cinema, has opened its doors for its 8th consecutive season. This year, they have collaborated with the Zip Zap Circus. Depending on the availability of the dome, less favourable weather conditions will no longer be standing in the way of screenings as the collaboration between these two brands will provide an alternative, sheltered venue at the Zip Zap Dome in the City Centre. We also see the return of some popular food vendors such as 2 Kitchens (strictly Halaal), Butlers and the Stellenbosch Brewing Company, as well a couple to take care of your sweet tooth and movie snacks or to warm you up with a good cup of coffee. As always, you’re also welcome to bring along your own picnic from home, if you prefer. The season promises to be yet another exciting one offering a fantastic movie line-up, with centralised venues in both the southern and northern suburbs and Atlantic Seaboard. Weekend screenings take place in the Cape Winelands giving visitors an opportunity to take a leisurely drive and soak up the scenery and surrounds away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Tickets can be booked online through Webtickets.

a quiet spot
Laborie Wine Estate, in the heart of Paarl, is synonymous with peace and relaxation. While located just off Paarl Main Road, not long after you exit the N1, you are stepping into a bubble of tranquility once you pass its gate. A rolling series of open spaces unveils, influencing your lungs to try and inhale it in, all at once. From the lush green lawn to the low, elegant and brilliant white, Cape Dutch manor house and surrounding buildings, to the outer perimeter vineyards that weave up and down the adjacent slopes, between Main Road and the bottom of Paarl Rock. With big shading oaks in strategic points, one cannot avoid noticing that the overall layout of the estate is set to welcome and embrace visitors. The estate offers two restaurants for day visitors. The Pearl Rock Terrace and the one of three branches in the winelands of Cucina Di Giovanni. Pearl Rock Terrace’s offering is simple; seasonal tapas, pizza, salads and desserts paired with friendly service and the incredible scenery. They serve lazy afternoon lunches and dinners under the stars. Open Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 - 21:00 and Sunday 11:00 – 16:00.

Hello Cape Town November 2019
Cucina Di Giovanni serves Mediterranean inspired cuisine. The Italian food is combined with a wine list curated carefully from neighbouring farms. During winter months the fireplace is lit to allow a cosy, comfort dining experience. The restaurant is open Tuesday – Saturday: 12:00 – 21:00 and Sunday: 12:00 – 16:00. 4 star accommodation on the estate can be easily described as vineyard elegance. A set of seven luxury double rooms and 1 deluxe suite, all furnished in a Cape French style and the Jonkershuis cottage which offers self-catering accommodation for six guests. All guest rooms overlook the historic Manor House werf, beautiful vineyards and the majestic Drakenstein Mountains. Villa 28, the latest self-catering addition, for up to 12 people, is a beautiful 1920s thatched roof house, renovated to perfection with modern facilities and lots of old world charm. The property is adjacent to the beautiful Laborie Estate, with only a short walk through the vineyards to enjoy all of the facilities on offer at the estate. All overnight guests are welcome to enjoy breakfast at the old Manor House, seated around one communal, antique, long table. A perfect scene and setting to start your day in the Winelands. The estate is a favourite among hikers and mountain bikers as a launching point to exploring the area. The comfortable, friendly and relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a few nights stay which allows time to explore the region. The Manor House also houses the estate’s wine tasting facility. Either on the balcony overlooking the panoramic view, or in one of the inner rooms, visitors and small groups are welcome to sample the estate’s range, Taillefert Wines. Tasting is available Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00. Laborie Estate offers a boardroom -style conferencing venue as well as larger spaces for exhibitions and special events. an african tale
Setting a goal to be a world leader in passenger traffic to and from Cape Town is a very ambitious decision to begin with. Finding within your organisation the right people to carry the daily details of this task to a successful resolute adds the odd factor of luck. And yet, in just a few years, Ethiopian Airlines set themselves the goal to be a major player among world reputable air carriers and become one of the leading airlines to impact the growing number of travellers passing through Cape Town International Airport with currently 8 flights a week and with an increase scheduled to 10 flights per week starting from 1 December (till 1 April 2020). This was achieved, without a doubt, by choosing to position a knowledgeable company representative that knows the brand, its aims and potential to develop in the emerging market that we call home. Mekdes Abera Aboset is Ethiopian Airlines Southern African Traffic and Sales Manager, based in the Mother City of Cape Town. Mekdes boasts over a decade of experience in delivering a wide range of services to Ethiopian Airlines from the beginning of her fruitful career journey. Starting out as a junior ticketing agent in 2009, Mekdes has shown immaculate resilience in her career path - “I am a reliable manager who thrives in a high-volume and fast-paced environment, offering 10 years of my services to Ethiopian Airlines,” says Aboset. Self-motivated and passionate about her line of work, Mekdes is the key driver for the airline’s day to day marketing planning, new business development and account management - just to name a few responsibilities – and ensures that her vision aligns with the airline’s vision and growth for the future. Aboset is also an ambassador for the airline, constantly aware of her responsibility to keep the airline at the top of the minds of the public and adhering with the brand’s guidelines and regulations. A typical day in the office consists of liaising with travel agencies, evaluating sales performances and analysing performance areas which are crucial for the identity of the brand. “At times, the work I do does become a bit challenging, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love exceeding expectations and pushing boundaries; this gives me a chance to prove to myself that I am capable of doing more great work for the airline and beyond,” she says. Having completed her Master of Arts in Commerce in Kolkata in 2016 and her Bachelor of Arts in Business Management in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mekdes has proven to the world that she is the right lady to tackle this demanding position. On a personal note, Aboset enjoys running when she takes a break from her daily responsibilities. Since moving to Cape Town in 2018, Aboset’s favourite place of interest is Table Mountain. “I love it here; the people are friendly and it’s quite relaxing. My heart will always be in Addis Ababa, but this is what I currently call home for now,” concludes Aboset. To learn more about Ethiopian Airlines, visit: www.ethiopianairlines.com/AA/EN

the greatest of all time comes to
Roger Federer has the most grand slam, and ATP tournaments wins of all time. He is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer will play his first-ever match in Sub Saharan Africa on February 7 in Cape Town. Federer’s opponent will be 19-time Grand Slam Champion and rival Rafael Nadal. The match will be played to support children’s education in Africa. The match will be the 6th edition of this event and the first to be played in Africa. Hosted at the spectacular Cape Town Stadium in front of 48 000 fans, it is the perfect venue to attempt a new world record for most spectators to watch a tennis match. “This Match in Cape Town is a dream come true. I will play in my mother’s home country against my toughest rival and friend Rafa Nadal. We share not only the love for tennis but also for the good cause of giving children a better start in education and life. I feel privileged to have other leading philanthropists on board to entertain millions of people in the Cape Town Stadium and on TV. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime moment.” said Federer Nelson Mandela famously said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Roger Federer has taken Madiba’s words to heart and education is the driving force behind the goals of his foundation. Roger explains what his foundation’s goals are: “I want to empower children so that they can reach their full potential. One of the most effective approaches to do this is education, and in particular early childhood education. What a child misses to learn in the first seven years of life can hardly be caught up. Early learning is the foundation of all learning. But it needs a village to educate a child: all stakeholders around a child must accept their responsibility to offer children a good start into education.” said Federer.

africa By John Lloyd
What is the foundation’s proudest achievement to date? “By the end of 2018, we wanted to give one million children the chance to benefit from a better quality of education. Now that we have achieved our goal, I stand here, elated yet humble. I am filled with the laughter of children I have met on my travels, and nourished by the tremendous motivation of teachers. And I am deeply impressed by the communities’ enthusiasm and engagement to improve their children’s education. I remain modest, however, because today, 64 million children across the world still do not attend primary school. In low-income countries, a shocking 85% of children do not have access to early education; that is more than 200 million children. Achieving one goal means setting new ones.” writes Federer in the annual report of the Foundation. “We’re on our way to an attendance World Record with tickets sold out. We are overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reaction on our ticket sales for The Match in Africa 6. We thank South Africans for their overwhelming support. Lines were opened up by Computicket at 09:00, and within a record time of fewer than 10 minutes, more than 40 000 tickets were sold. The event will be televised for those who did not get tickets.” said Janine Händel, CEO of the Roger Federer Foundation. Visit: www.rogerfedererfoundation.org Hello Cape Town November 2019 l

a night out in the winelands
Warm, scented nights are upon us and there is nothing better for Capetonians than taking advantage of it. While we all still work over the season, it is the time when we relish in the world-renowned destination that we live in. We enjoy picnics under the stars, outdoor concerts, movies and full moon walks. We are lucky to have the best of it all and you are welcome to join the celebration. A night out in the winelands will always come with the sense of achievement that you’ve done something good for your soul, so don’t miss out on these opportunities and make a note for your coming visit in the next few months. TAALMONUMENT The iconic sculpture monument is situated on Paarl Mountain and is surrounded by an open garden and an amphitheater. Over summer they offer tutored stargazing picnics in conjunction with Orion Observation Group (OOG) members who like to share their knowledge and telescopes for free. This is a great way to explore and learn about the southern hemisphere firmament and the slightly remote location gives a good view of the sky. The picnics are very popular with locals and overseas visitors who especially enjoy the beautiful views of the valleys, mountains and peninsula. The theme is ‘Let’s wave goodbye to Saturn’ and the picnic begins at 18:00. The guided tour of the monument is at 18:30 and visitors can stare into the skies from 20:00 to 22:30.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
