2020 has been a busy, short, long and confusing year all in one. With COVID putting most of the world into lockdown, we have all become used to staying at home. But what has kept a lot of us positive is the thought of travelling again! The question is where to travel, and is it safe? South Africa is a prime destination for Post COVID travels. With some outstanding hospitals and strict sanitation techniques. You cannot be safer. How to make your travel simpler and safer? With the new norms of travel, we all want to mitigate our risks as much as possible. Besides the standard regulations of mask-wearing and sanitising. Here are three ways in which you can reduce your risks:

but it is best to avoid closed spaces. How about hiking up Table Mountain rather than using the Cable Car? Stay at a place longer - we often move around during travel but by staying at a place longer, you can avoid the risks of moving between establishments. Is the Tourism Industry Ready for Tourists? YES! With months of lockdown and no travel, establishments have used this time to revamp, renovate and prepare for the long-awaited travel bans to be lifted. They have implemented extreme measures to ensure the safety of its staff and guests. We must realise that the way we travel has changed, but the memories are still there to be made.

Hire a car - Hiring a car and self-driving will help you keep your distance during travel. Avoid Ubers and other forms of transportation.

Now is the time to enjoy significantly discounted prices! With summer starting to show, don’t miss out on your South African experience.

Avoid big gatherings - this goes without saying,

Preparing for the new travel standards:

taking an incredible journey The forced suspension of this years’ carnival became a bridge of opportunities for a larger number of Cape Town communities, performers, artists and artisans from across the Northern and Western Cape took part. In preparation for the 2021 Cape Town Carnival, a monthly open, on-line workshop is being held, reaching out to historic communities and cultures and broadens the diversity that will be shown on our streets. Designed to keep participants in its year-long community-driven programme connected and inspired despite lockdown challenges, the first two-hour workshop - “In the Footsteps of the First Artists” - focused on reclaiming our identity as individuals, and as a nation, with specific exploration of South Africa’s First Peoples, with guest Chief John Jansen of the Cochoqua Khoisan tribe. Workshop participants were introduced to the origins of human creativity with a moving performance by recording artist, musician and facilitator Glen Arendse of Khoi Konnexion, who played a traditional mouthbow to awaken imagination, thoughts and feelings, inspired by ancestral memory. “The sound and vibration the bow produces, connects with a very ancient part of us, deep inside, beyond words,” says Arendse. “Part of its mystery is that it shows us how instinctively talented and gifted the San and Khoi-Khoi were and are.” Arendse, one of three musicians from the acclaimed Khoi Khonnexion group, uses a variety of indigenous and contemporary instruments including percussion, hand-drums, shakers, rattles, mbira, flutes, whistles, guitar and found material to perform deeply moving musical experiences. “Part of my mission is to bring attention to the rich heritage of our first nation,” says Arendse. “The mouthbow, for example, is a means of awakening the imagination, thoughts and feelings around the talent of the San and Khoi-Khoi.” Western Cape Khoisan Council leader Chief John Jansen of the Cochoqua Khoisan introduced two greetings from the KhoeKhoegowab language which prompted group activity pronouncing the words using African clicks and vowels. In conversation with artist, curator and social-cultural adviser Khanyisile Mbongwa, Chief Jansen emphasized the importance of reclaiming one’s identity, and Khoisan culture and heritage in particular, as part of healing our humanity. On the remarkable legacy of Southern African rock art, Jansen commented “The cultural insights we can gain from these visual legacies are tremendous. They are treasures to humanity. They change behaviour through awareness. They are the Khoisan’s title deeds.” Examples of artistic symbolism in rock art were shared, including the eland, exquisitely depicted in rock etchings and paintings and regarded as a spirit animal by the Khoi and San. Franco Pascoe, workshop coordinator at Cape Town Carnival, addressed participants from the Carnival’s workshop in Maitland, giving a behindthe-scenes preview of the giant eland sculpture in the making that was originally scheduled to appear in this year’s Carnival street parade in March, but will now appear at the next major Carnival event. The Cape Town Carnival is a big street parade and cultural party, bringing representatives of different communities to showcase their best colors and celebration traditions. African bits and an explosion of shades that shows the best of our Rainbow Nation, every year at mid-March. With our borders now open for travel, make it your business to get to Cape Town.

choosing healthy

Nando’s reframes healthy takeaways and dining out. The winter months have ended and South Africans are feeling the rejuvenating spring freshness of October. For the restaurant industry, this new season brings with it new challenges as the economic and social consequences of COVID-19 redefine the meaning of ‘business as usual’. Health and hygiene have catapulted to the top of the global agenda and the restaurant industry has followed suit. The World Health Organisation says a healthy diet is very important to build resilience when fighting the current pandemic. What we eat and drink can affect our body’s ability to prevent, fight and recover from infections. As a business, Nando’s have always prided themselves in being a healthier eat-out choice without compromising on flavour or enjoyment. Food is locally sourced, chicken is fresh rather than frozen and it’s delivered speedily to the restaurants limiting the amount of time between farm and fork. South Africans rewarded for healthier choices with Discovery Vitality: This commitment to health goes beyond the pandemic, stating that Nando’s will continue to prioritise healthy eating. The longstanding partnership between Nando’s and Discovery Vitality, which offers Vitality members up to 25% back and 50% back for kids meals, when ordering healthier meals at Nando’s, is a testament to this commitment. This goes for dine-in, take-away and delivery meals. In July, Discovery Vitality funded a further 10% reward on the popular Nando’s ¼ Chicken with a healthier side of your choice, giving customers the chance to earn 35% of their meal back by selecting healthier side options such as roasted vegetables, spinach or salad to go with their flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken. Vitality members just need to look out for the Vitality ‘V’ next to Nando’s menu items to identify which qualify for Vitality rewards. All chicken and many sides options qualify, so there’s plenty to choose from. What’s more, as a Discovery Vitality member you can get rewarded with Nando’s and Vitality Active Rewards. When you achieve your exercise, drive or money goal, you’ll get rewarded with a play on the gameboard and a chance to earn Discovery Miles. Reconfiguring the restaurant environment: Increased hygiene precautions brought on by the advent of COVID-19 meant that Nando’s had to rethink the flow of guests and the movement of staff. With more than 270 restaurants and a few more still to open in the months ahead, Nando’s needed to quickly ensure social distancing was maintained by restaurant staff, guests and delivery drivers all while managing the changing levels of lockdown. In the restaurants themselves, this was quickly accomplished through the use of colour-coded floor decals and signage.

national botanical gardens celebrate spring

SANBI are calling on South Africans to visit their nearest Botanical Garden to celebrate the first ever Spring Festival. Many people might not realise that there are 13 Botanical and Zoological gardens across South Africa, all of which offer beautiful gardens, restaurants, tea gardens, picnic sites, nurseries and lots to do for young and old. Nothing short than great news for gardeners, fans of all things floral, nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, families looking for a wonderful day out, and everyone celebrating the arrival of warmer weather, is that the inaugural SANBI Spring Festival is currently taking place across South Africa. Running until the end of October, the SANBI Spring Festival has been launched to showcase, and draw visitors to, the network of exceptional National Botanical and Zoological Gardens that exist across the country, and which are managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). 13 GARDENS IN SA Many people may not realise that South Africa has 10 National Botanical Gardens and a National Zoological Garden - stretching across eight of the country’s provinces - which showcase and protect our richly diverse landscapes and biodiversity. In addition, SANBI also manages the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden and Mokopane Biodiversity Conservation Centre in the Limpopo Province. SANBI’s National Botanical and Zoological Garden – or “Conservation Gardens” – cover a vast array of ecosystems, including grasslands, fynbos, woodlands, marshlands, arid and semi-arid habitats, coastal vegetation and more – and feature natural landmarks ranging from craggy mountains to steep gorges, major rivers, vast plains and rocky koppies. Within these habitats the efforts of the SANBI teams sees a plethora of fauna and flora being nurtured and protected – efforts that have yielded untouched natural tracts of wilderness and floral splendour that everyone should see to believe. SANBI wish to draw South Africans from all walks of life into the Botanical Gardens to revel in, and celebrate, the beauty of our diverse landscapes and floral regions. Young and old alike will love a day out at a SANBI Botanical Garden – most of which are urban oases in the heart of suburban developments. And there truly is something to do for everyone; whether it is a gentle stroll through the gardens while the kids play on the lawns, followed by a delicious meal at the restaurants situated in many of the gardens, or perhaps it is a hike to the waterfalls and pools, a guided tour, bird watching and some eco-therapy – the list is seemingly endless as to what visitors can expect at the SANBI Botanical Gardens. And of course, there is the Pretoria Zoo - the one Zoological Garden managed by SANBI, which is not only the largest zoo in South Africa, but is also rated as one of the top zoos in the world. Most of the Botanical Gardens have curio shops for visitors to treat themselves to a souvenir, and many have a nursery outlet where indigenous plants can be purchased. Some of the gardens offer great braai facilities, alternatively pack a picnic and

Historic cities uphold magnificent and unique indoor space that visitor often miss. Some are behind very well-known exteriors, often passed by, some have a more humble facade. Here are some of those worth to be delayed at: The Old City Hall concert space, which is called The Grand Hall, is the home of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The hall went through an expensive renovation and restoration process about two years ago which brought it back to its well-deserved architectural glory. The Old City Hall

Every aspect of the venue was rebuilt or attended to, including the Pipe Organ that dominates the back of the stage. If you would like to experience the space’s full potential, look out for the Philharmonic Dress rehearsals, usually a day before or the daytime of the scheduled concert. You can watch the rehearsal for a nominal fee. A virtual visit to the Old City Hall is available on the Cape Town Municipality website. The Center for the Book in Cape Town is an Edwardian style rotunda. The building is located across the Company’s Garden on Queen Victoria Street. The building belongs to national Libraries of SA and usually

hosts book related events. Another gem under the same subject is The Book Lounge. A privately owned book store on 71 Roeland Street, packed with books from floor to ceiling. The passionate staff will gladly help with any enquiry, advice and information about local literature. Not far, on 36 Buitenkant Street, the Truth Coffee Artisanal roastery, world-class café, steampunk inspired space is located. On the culinary side, Truth Coffee Roasting has specialised in selecting and roasting the world’s most exclusive coffees and has been voted the world’s best coffee shop by The Daily Telegraph for two years in a row. This is definitely the place to make your coffee break amazing.

The Book Lounge

For a late, into the night experience, with music, beautiful people and a local vibe try Harringtons Cocktail Lounge. Although a very humble entrance, a staircase will lead you into a second floor of old elegance with wooden floors, a looooong bar and velvety sitting niche. Harringtons, a classic cocktail lounge, restaurant and boutique bar, evokes a feeling of otherworldly opulence and style. Harry is home on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm and on Saturdays from 6pm until late. Along the beach you can’t miss the firm presence of the Green Point Lighthouse. It was first lit on 12 April 1824. It was the first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast and is the oldest operational lighthouse in the country. The lighthouse was designed by the German architect Herman Shutte. Building commenced in 1821 and was completed in 1823. In 1865 the building was extended to its present height. The Green point lighthouse is a national heritage site and is open to the public for a fee and is always a great first time experience for both young and old.

five glorious picnic spots in the cape winelands

Quoin Rock

Picnic outings are traditionally the add-ons to the extensive treats many wine estates as to offer. Yet, with the new ways of travel and leisure, requiring keeping yourself in a virtual capsule, picnics become the reasonable choice for many explorers. Since most offers are made by the estate’s chef or at the restaurant, venues are able to cater to different dietary requirements given a proper notice. In all cases, advanced booking is mandatory since space and availability is limited. The world renowned Nederburg Estate, in the Paarl wine region, producing award winning wines for centuries (we kid you not!), recently completed a massive renovation at the old manor house which now houses both the wine tasting section and a chef restaurant. A meal on the lawn, under the shade of age-old trees starts at 12:00 with generous picnic baskets, filled to the brim with a splendid selection of local cheeses and charcuterie, olives, pickles, nuts, hummus, and freshly baked bread for entrée. The main course is crispy roasted baby chicken with sautéed caramelised new potatoes. To finish, enjoy a deliciously

16 l

Hello Cape Town October 2020

decadent chocolate brownie served with cream. The picnic basket serves two and includes a bottle of your choice of wine from their ‘The Winemasters’ collection. Adult picnic baskets, serving two, cost R460, while kids’ picnic boxes (for those under the age of 12), serving one, goes for R100. You may also add additional soft drinks, waters, non-alcoholic ciders and hot beverages to your basket selection. These are offered at an additional cost. A picnic a Quoin Rock wine estate in Stellenbosch is a full day experience. Only 8 iron cast pergolas at the edge of the garden are available and you are seated on classic garden furniture, served a dedicated menu by a waitron that will accompany you throughout the day. Picnickers can relax in the garden after lunch, either on a picnic blanket or fat sac or alternatively enjoy the various lawn games provided, making this a truly leisurely excursion. A basket includes freshly baked French baguette with chef choice artisanal butters; basil and pesto cream dip; foie gras pâté; fresh snoek pâté, and a local cheese and charcuterie selection.

To add to the delight, a basket also features a butternut, baby mix leaves and feta salad; beetroot, baby mix leaves and goat cheese; a fresh poke bowl; smoked salmon wrap; delicious roasted lamb on Moroccan couscous; as well as Pina Colada and coconut panna cotta; and unlimited still and sparkling water. A children’s basket includes rootstock crisps; a chocolate or strawberry milkshake; a handmade cookie and seasonal berries. Children also have the option of selecting a ham and cheese baguette, a cheese baguette, or a mac and cheese. Note that chefs at Gåte are also able to create a delectable vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free version of the menu, with prior notice. Picnics are priced at R400 per person, and R180 per children’s basket. They are available from Thursday to Sunday, from 1 October 2020 to 30 April 2021.

Nederburg

Nothing beats the picture perfect location of De Grendel Wine Estate in the Durbanville Valley. Across the bay from Table Mountain and Cape Town, they could have settled with that, but being owned by a line of Baronet for the 4th generation, aspiring to quality is in the genes. You won’t find a picnic per se but rather an extended wine tasting option in the form of mezze platter. That, when combined with the setting and wonderful weather, is perfect for a prolonged experience. Eagles Nest wine estate, a small boutique winery in the Constantia Valley, producing small quantities of superb wine, nowhere else to be found in South Africa because most bottles are exported, is a must on-site visit.

De Grendel

With 3 generations living on the property as well as some of the staff members, it is not only beautiful but also family oriented. Four types of casual sitting, 1 indoors and 3 out, under the shade of the pergolas or the Corallodendrons, next to the big, naturally bordered lawns, where children can run around, is where you can have your tasting of their full range. Complement the tasting with one of the platters that are designed to be shared and you get a perfect, relaxed winelands experience. An ‘out in the nature’ experience will easily be achieved at Delheim wine estate in Stellenbosch. The estate borders with The Greater Simonsberg Conservancy. A private initiative and collaboration that protect the natural catchment area and the diversity of the plants on this side of the Simonsburg Mountain range.

Eagles Nest

The riverside picnic is great for spreading cotton blankets under the towering oaks or sitting at one of the picnic tables. Your hand-woven basket will greet you in a serene spot on the lush lawns, brimming with homemade goodies. This is made to be enjoyed to the sounds of the flowing Klip River and abundant bird life. The picnic baskets serve two people and there are various options which cater for both vegetarians and meat-lovers. Of course there is also something for the kids and they can indulge in a delicious kiddie basket. Wines can be purchased separately to take down to the picnic area and enjoy with your basket.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

to suit a variety of requirements and budgets. THE HISTORY OF WELLINGTON Wellington lies in a beautiful and fertile valley surrounded by mountains – with Groenberg to the North-East and beyond Limietberg, the Hawequas and the two Sneeukoppe. Many thousands of years ago, the valley was inhabited by indigenous people, the San and Khoi-Khoi and relics of their implements are still found in the area. In 1677, the first European settlers came to the valley known as Limietvallei. In 1699 Willem Adriaan van der Stel allocated 15 farms to the French Huguenots. The first pioneers established a wagon maker’s industry and the valley became known as Wagenmakersvallei (Val du Charron) – the valley of the wagon makers.

Dutch Reformed Mother Church & Andrew Murray Statue

It was in 1840 that the Dutch Reformed Church was established, simultaneously with the proclamation of Wellington as a town on 26 March 1840. On the recommendation of the then British Governor at the Cape, Sir George Napier, Wellington was named after the Duke of Wellington 25 years after the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The founder of Wellington was Dr John Addey. Thirteen years later, this quiet rustic village became a hub of activity. The roads were improved and on the 13 September 1853 the first bridge was opened across the Berg River and a day later, on 14 September, the Bains Kloof Pass was opened, thus the opening up of a route to the North. Andrew Geddes Bain was a brilliant Scot who had no formal training as engineering training but cut a pass through the mountains with dynamite and convict labour. We have travelled this pass. It is magnificent and very delicate on the impact it made to the landscape.

Petit Ecole

Ten years later, on the 4th November 1863, the Cape Town to Wellington railway line was opened by Governor Sir Phillip Wodehouse. Wellington was now a pulsating terminus of trains, stage coaches and wagons. A new era broke in 1871 with the arrival of the Reverend Dr Andrew Murray. Dr Andrew Murray was the inspiration behind the building of the Huguenot Seminary, and establishment for the Christian Education of girls and young ladies. Wellington became known as the birthplace of education for ladies in South Africa. Many of the beautiful buildings on the Heritage Trail are the legacy of Dr Andrew Murray.
