CLANWILLIAM WILDFLOWER SOCIETY SHOW 23 AUGUST - 1 SEPTEMBER The veld is awakening after a long, dry spell and a green sheen is already covering the landscape. This show is made possible by volunteers in the area that pick and preserve different flower species. The flowers are then arranged into a colourful living landscape in the Blommekerk in town for the thousands of visitors to enjoy.
THE CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL 31 AUGUST - 1 SEPTEMBER
It is basically impossible to view this vast array of unique and beautiful flowers without going to great lengths. The main aim of the show is to make sure that all flower fans can see virtually every wildflower species in one area. THE CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL 31 AUGUST - 1 SEPTEMBER THE WOODMILL IN STELLENBOSCH The festival will feature oodles of chocolates, macaroons, decadent chocolate brownies, indulgent doughnuts, ice creams, liquorice, marshmallows, candy floss and special handcrafted products from artisanal chocolatiers.

There’s a diverse range of events to choose from, with local and international authors talking about everything from politics, comics, gender and poetry to fun such as the popular Writer Sports and poetry and ice cream pairing. NATIONAL PARKS WEEK 8 - 15 SEPTEMBER This year SANParks is pleased to announce that it has extended SA National Parks Week to include weekends, heeding the request from South Africans who don’t have time to visit national parks during the week. The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. Free entry excludes Namaqua National Park and Boulders Penguin Colony and the Table Mountain Cableway in Table Mountain National Park. It should be noted that free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities. 20 - 22 SEPTEMBER Locals and visitors alike can expect the joyful sight of masses of brightly coloured flowers at the 2019 Darling Wildflower Show. Themed ‘A Carnival of Wildflowers’, the show takes place when most of the glorious wildflowers in the region are in bloom, lending an optimistic carnavalesque atmosphere to the town and its surrounds. Darling-based artist Nicolaas Maritz will act as show designer this year, and is tasked with reflecting the rainbow-coloured season in all its aspects. Maritz is an expert at creating interesting landscaping layouts, and has successfully designed and managed a number of local wildflower shows in the past. Tickets to the show include access to: • The Landscaped Hall depicting the flowers of the area in their natural habitat, • A Craft & Gourmet Food Market, • A Veteran Tractor/Car display • An entertainment tent featuring live music from local acts • A shuttle service from the show grounds to local attractions • Safe and secure parking for vehicles. THE AFROFEST 21- 24 SEPTEMBER An annual decentralized festival that collaborates with local businesses, organisations, activators, and creatives all over the city, to put up this amazing festival during heritage weekend, all in celebration and appreciation of African Culture and Heritage! Activities include live concerts, African food, art and craft exhibitions, film screenings, themed music parties, story-telling and poetry, amongst others. Written in 1972, ‘Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act’ is set in apartheid South Africa, where relationships across the colour bar were a criminal offence. Two lovers – a coloured man and white woman meet secretly in the library where the woman works, to make love and share their hopes and fears. A neighbour reports them to the police who secretly photograph them from the informant’s backyard and eventually break in and arrest the couple under the inhuman and universally pilloried Immorality Act. The play is a compelling and deeply moving love story in which the physically and emotionally naked lovers expose not only their bodies but also their deepest longings for personal and emotional freedom.

For the last 14 years, SANParks (South African National Parks) grants free entry to most of its parks during the second week of September. This year, SANParks has extended SA National Parks Week to include weekends, heeding the request from South Africans who don’t have time to visit national parks during the week. National parks focus week is a worldwide campaign which gives people free access to National Parks. This annual event gives all South African citizens the opportunity to visit one of the 21 national parks for free. This year, SANParks is even more excited to host SA National Parks Week as the country celebrates 25 years of democracy as a nation. Each year SANParks aims to increase the number of citizens that are granted free access to national parks during this time. Since starting the programme in 2006, some 438 000 South Africans have been afforded the opportunity to enter national parks, and SANParks want to see these numbers grow. “It’s important for South Africans to visit and know the importance of national parks. They act as spaces to practice sustainable conservation, as spaces that preserve and celebrate our culture and heritage, and we now see national parks playing the critical role of empowering communities living adjacent to parks through job creation and we continue to explore ways of creating business opportunities particularly for small business owners,” says SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni. Mketeni highlights the growing need for national parks to be relevant, particularly to young people and communities living adjacent to parks. “Through our Socio-Economic Transformation programmes and our Expanded Public Works Programme, we work closely with communities living adjacent to national parks with the aim of strengthening our relationships with them, in order to be more inclusive so we can tackle issues of wildlife crime with their help, afford them more access to parks for cultural use, inform young people about the different career options that parks have to offer and create job opportunities. SANParks hopes to strengthen and enable those communities to reap the benefits of the national parks.” Visit a national park this year for free during SA National Parks Week to see what it has to offer and do your part by getting to know your national parks, celebrate your rich heritage offering and experience first-hand the iconic beauty and plethora of natural flora and fauna. Participating Western Cape parks include: • Agulhas National Park (an open access park with no pay points), Bontebok National Park, Garden Route National Park, Karoo National Park and Tankwa Karoo National Park. • Namaqua National Park is excluded from SA National Parks Week. • Table Mountain National Park free entry excludes Boulders Penguin Colony and the Table Mountain Cableway. • West Coast National Park: gate quotas will be applicable during weekends: • Free entries at both gates will be 500 people per day (collectively) on Saturday and Sunday. While situated in the Franschhoek wine valley, Dieu Donné is located high on the south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains. It is one of the highest vineyards in the valley. That means the vines enjoy the valley’s fertile soil but also differentiate by adding the cool climate component giving the wines a distinct flavour and a unique depth in God Given Land (Dieu Donnè). Keeping the 30ha family vineyard under one hand for many years desolates with wines that gives firm, constant high quality level with all red wines matured in French and American Oak barrels and the Method Cap Classique (the South African Champaign) fermented, rotated and coming to fruition in a process that is given over 3 years.
The white wines produced on the estate are available both wooded and unwooded, offering an option for a large palate of tastes. Dieu Donné wines are available overseas or on the farm. They are not distributed in South Africa. Going back to its unprecedented location, Dieu Donné, facing west, overlooks the entire Franschhoek Valley and beyond. A carpet of farms and wine estates is interrupted only by the raising Hottentots-Holland and Simonsberg ranges. The position promises countless, stunning, orange and pink sunsets when the sun descends behind the Simonsberg mountains. The tasting room and its front lawn yard takes advantage of the panoramic view and offers a range of wine and cheese pairings to be slowly indulged while trying to spot some Cape Eagles.

You are welcome to linger longer with an offering of some of the wines by the glass and free Wi-Fi, or it can be only that. When spending a few days in the Cape Winelands and needing a spot to soak up the experience and reflect, Dieu Donné would be our place of choice. Roca restaurant on the farm shares the same magnificent position. A full open glass façade allows every table to enjoy the view and the lower deck balcony offers alfresco dining for summer and mild winter days. An open fireplace in the restaurant takes care of both temperature and atmosphere in winter. The balcony and its lawn are perfect for your welcoming drink or aperitif, and while you soak up the view and the beverage, a waiter will take your order for the rest of your meal. The restaurant has added other wines of note to the wine list from the area to fully match the fine dining South African menu. The menu includes vegetarian options in each category to accommodate every palate. Adding all these components together, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that this symbiosis resonates as one of the favourite wedding destinations in the area. TITANIC FORCES WITH THE CPO With Mahler and Tchaikovsky bronze medallist Daniel Kharitonov on the same programme, then Titanic Forces are at play! The CPO’s principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller will direct the annual Friends of Orchestral Music Benefit gala on September 5 at the Cape Town City Hall, featuring Kharitonov in the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov. The main work will be the Symphony No. 1 by Gustav Mahler, known as “Titan”. The concert will open with From the Apocalypse by Liadov. After his triumph at the 15th Tchaikovsky International Competition in 2015 when he was 16, Daniel Kharitonov continues to stun the world with his electrifying performances … from Gergiev’s Marinsky Orchestra to the CPO where he performed for the first time in 2017, also under the direction of Gueller. Born in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in the Russian Far East, Daniel Kharitonov made a successful debut with The Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in 2013, and became a regular with the orchestra. He has toured with them to China and Italy.
SUZANNE HOU RETURNS TO CAPE TOWN The final Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra concert this season ends on 12 September with the jubilant return of Chinese-Canadian violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou. Ms Hou will perform two pieces – Poème by Chausson and the Introduction and Rondo Capriccio by Saint-Saëns. Bernhard Gueller, the CPO’s principal guest conductor and Music Director Laureate of Symphony Nova Scotia, will conduct a ballet suite from Le Cid by Massenet, as well as the Fountains of Rome and the Pines of Rome, two spectacular tone poems by Ottorino Respighi. Ms Hou rose to fame when she won three prestigious international violin competitions in one year – the Long-Thibaud in France, the Lipizer in Italy and the Sarasate in Spain. Since then, she has made her mark around the world, always performing to critical and popular acclaim. The dress rehearsal for both concerts will be open to the public at 11 am with tickets available at the Longmarket Street door and the pre-concert talk is open to ticket-holders at 19:15.
TIM KLIPHUIS TRIO AND THE CPO Tim Kliphuis is returning to South Africa to launch the recording of his own violin concerto. Kliphuis found his home in the music of South Africa years ago and when he brought his trio to perform in Starlight Classics in 2018, they stayed to record their second CD with the CPO and Stellenbosch Camerata. The CPO will accompany the Tim Kliphuis Trio which includes Nigel Clark (guitar), and Roy Percy (bass) in the Brandenburg Concerto in the concert, and Kliphuis will conduct the CPO in his own Violin Concerto on 27 September. ikhono lasenatali Ikhono Lasenatali is a collaborative project with Sir Professor Muholi that brings together the work of twenty-five emerging talents from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in a celebration of youth, skill, possibility and the imaginary. The project is curated by Dr. Bajabulile La Dhlamini Sidzumo and Thobeka Bhengu, members of the Muholi team, and is the second instance of the initiative. The first iteration opened in KZN this May 2019.

For almost two decades, artist and activist Sir Professor Muholi has used the camera and a global network of art institutions to address the social ills associated with the politics of race, gender and sexuality faced by South Africans and others globally. For Ikhono LaseNatali, Muholi aims to use their platform to redirect the international attention they receive to the practice of others: twenty-five young artists from KwaZulu-Natal have been commissioned by Muholi to reinterpret an image from their photographic series Somnyama Ngonyama: “...using their own mediums, speaking their own truth, or sketching what they saw and thought was right.”

A4 is a free to public, not-for-profit laboratory for the arts. It collaborates with artists to develop ambitious projects, nurture exchange and dialogue, broaden access and work towards a sustainable inclusive arts ecosystem. Ikhono LaseNatali brings these forces together in an integrated initiative about community, visibility and self-determined artistic practice. In addition to the exhibition, the project entails a widereaching exchange with schools in the Western Cape to expose, engage and challenge youth to consider the tenets of inclusivity, creativity and collectivism.

Originally a ‘Born in Durban’, Muholi recently returned home to give back to their community, and share their skills, wealth and expertise to help develop a younger generation of aspiring artists, thinkers and activists. The IKHONO LASENATALI project also commemorates 25 Years of Democracy, with most of the commissioned artists from the ‘born free’ generation. The exhibition showcases the hidden or latent talent of these remarkable KwaZulu-Natal based artists who work in a variety of mediums and utilizing different techniques. These include wood-cut carving, beaded string, oil and acrylic on canvas and paper, pastel on paper and digital imaging, among many others. Known for their innovative Dry Land wines, Method Cap Classique (MCC), estate brewed beer and a series of festivals around the year, Perdeberg Winery in Agter-Suid Paarl, renewed themselves with an on premises South African style restaurant. It is Eat @ Perdeberg. Managed by Chef –owner Rob Hahn and wife Nicky Hahn at front of house, you are treated by a pair that are embedded in South African culinary history. From being chosen to join the team of 6 out of 80 nominated chefs country-wide to cook at the inauguration of the late president Nelson Mandela in Sun City in 1994, followed by cooking the intimate next morning breakfast for Mandela & President Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki two terms later, Chef Rob built himself a firm reputation in serving honest, local food that speaks the language of South Africa. The cuisine is an elevation of home cooked favourites from around the country. Generous, varied and colourful portions, designed and served in an appealing, fine dining manner. Wines are all sold at cellar door prices with no additional charge. While you are right to assume we were recognised as media when visiting, we are comfortable in assuring you that from our experience, in cases where the owner is also the chef onboard, a constant, similar level is kept down the line. It is the ongoing attendance to cooking and details that reputes a chef’s name for so many years. The menu offers all day breakfast which we left for another visit. We were served Bobotie springrolls - a take of the local samosa, filled with spicy, aromatic, brown lentils, served with a tomato, coriander and chilli jam. We added an order of Chicken livers ‘peri-peri’ that is served with a Ciabatta and a small, fresh salad. The Cape Malay Chicken Curry portion, one of our mains, was skinless, helping the flesh to absorb the spicy, mild sauce. Served under a canopy of fluffed crepé, next to our choice of rice and veggies.

The other main was a hearty Fish and Chips with a large piece of fish, perfectly cooked and served on a bed of grilled chips (our choice) and a side salad. We are sorry to say we didn’t have room left for dessert. This current operation gives the couple freedom to utilise and maximise the full potential of both their cuisine and the winery’s different facilities. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor, leafy, shaded seating with a menu that includes options for kids to have a healthy meal while running from one jungle gym to the other, a specially curated juice and candy pairing for the young ones to join in the family experience of wine tasting and a set for kids’ parties. Family gatherings and weddings are welcome and a plan of action is in place to accommodate any requirement. They are also responsible for the Braai picnic basket and other pairings served in the tasting room, perfectly suited for 2 people to share and made to order. Bookings are essential and deposits are required 48 hours in advance specifically for the Braai picnic. Corporate events have a great selection of options and combinations to choose from. While the vines start blooming at the different wine estates, and the slopes around the different wine valleys are getting back their bright green lush, numerous wine estates along the Franschhoek Wine Tram routes are also enjoying a burst of colour provided by the estate gardens. Either classic, central European designs or rolling English lawns and spaces, they all provide a fresh look and gentle, cooling shade to enjoy picnics, some must try wines and the glorious hospitality South Africans are known for. At ALLEÉ BLEUE, you’re literally eating the garden. While it is most widely known for its wine and fruit, the 200ha estate is also ranked among the top three herb growers in the province.
The herb production set-up consists of 33 hydroponic tunnels as well as a net house. From these structures more than 1.2 tons of herbs are harvested each week, suppling major South African retailers. But the most important market is the various dining outlets at the estate itself and where possible, their chef tries to incorporate these healthy and fragrant ingredients in the menus. Off the main visitor’s track, VREDE EN LUST holds a beautifully designed sectional classic garden with a fountain at the middle and a shaded pergola along one of the edges. On days that this area doesn’t hold a function, a nice request might get you to enjoy your wine at this part of the estate. Their one of a kind Prosecco would be our celebratory choice.

Over the last few years, whenever a visitor is looking for a stroll to wind down their winelands visit, every local mouth will speak the name of BABYLONSTOREN, and not in vein. The big garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town, which supplied sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company with fresh vegetables and fruit during the days when the Cape was a halfway station between Europe and Asia. It also links back to the mythological hanging gardens of Babylon. Those were thought to have been created by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC, for his wife, who longed for the mountains and valleys of her youth. Babylonstoren

It is a refined and purified contemporary approach to traditional winelands hospitality. On the other end of the scale you will find DIEU DONNÉ. The estate’s location, high on the steep south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, the estate offers a panoramic view over the entire valley. Choose between their wooded red wines or acclaimed Méthode Cap Classique (bubbly) to soak in both taste and view. Nothing matches.

If you wish to avoid driving and fully embrace your wine experience, City Sightseeing Cape Town offers the Franschhoek Wine Tram Explorer Tour. Leaving stop 1 at the V&A Waterfront on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.
Enjoy free Wifi on the bus whilst you listen to some wine commentary as you depart from Cape Town in the morning and head to Franschhoek. On arrival you will be afforded the opportunity to join the Orange or Purple tram routes. Each circular route covers 8 wine estates. whale watching season
It’s the spectacular annual visits from the southern right and humpback whales. Every year, southern right whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climates, reaching the South African Whale Coast in June and will stay till early December. These coastal waters will then teem with the giant mammals, mating, calving and rearing their young – and giving whale-watchers spectacular displays of raw power and elegant water acrobatics incredibly close to shore. The annual Hermanus Festival is a celebration to the return of the southern right whales to the coastal waters of Southern Africa. All events and activities during the festival are focused to create awareness on how to protect the whales and all our marine wildlife who share our coastal waters. The festival takes place between 27-29 September, which is the peak of whale activity in the region. Over a period of 3 days, this fishing village will once again bursts into life when thousands of visitors descend upon the town to join in the festivities of this popular event. Now in its 28th year the Hermanus Whale Festival, is the oldest and largest festival on the South African whale coast calendar and while the whales are predominantly the star performers at the festival, these gentle giants will be joined on land by entertainers and musicians, an array of food stalls, kiddies activities and events suitable for both the young and old. This year’s programme will include land & boat-based whale watching, arts and crafts, a Street Parade, an orchid show and the Whales and Wheels Classic Car Show. Expect to linger for hours inside the Live Music Marquee, and the Old Harbour Music Arena where various local artists will be performing over the three days of the festival. FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety.
